I had a long lunch break so decided to take a walk, and this park is right down the street from where I work. Lots of parking, and access to pretty much nearly anything you need, just keep following the roadways. A few playgrounds, a lot of baseball fields, some derelict tennis courts that were probably great during their heyday, and huge fields perfect for family outings playing frisbee or soccer or riding bikes or just stretching out for a picnic. On the north side of the property, you can relax under numerous shady eucalyptus trees or conifers. It appears that during baseball games, there is a concession stand and the public restrooms were available while I was there, though it was a little worrying that the stall doors lacked a latch. However, they were clean, much like the rest of the park, which surprised me in that not once did I need to dodge a pile of dog poo. Either the park or its patrons are great at cleaning up after canines, and that's a rarity! I also glimpsed a pool when I left, and I'm not sure if it's open to the public, another rarity in Tucson public parks these days. But if so, it looks like it'd be a nice place for the family to have a pool day.

The worst part is that a majority of the old tall trees are all dead from lack of water. What a shame and what a disservice to our community. To top it all off the contractor doing the work is from Phoenix. Wonder how many local contractors could have done the work and stayed on schedule?? here is the news report last year. https://www.kold.com/2024/08/28/palo-verde-park-closed-renovations/

There are bird's nesting in the baseball field lights. Maybe this is true of all baseball fields, but I've noticed these. This year it's a pair of ravens, but last year hawks were living there. There are two dog enclosures, one for small dogs. I don't have a dog, but it makes for distracting dog/owner-watching as you walk the track. It is bounded on two sides by an enormous Oleander hedge, and on a third side by an open lot that dips to a wash with a lovely bridge linking it to the neighborhood and further, to a cross-walk on Kolb. Vermilion Flycatchers hang out here, which are pretty entertaining to watch as they catch insects on the fly and return to their perch http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vermilion_Flycatcher It's a great place for a picnic.

Or if you prefer, you can walk/run/bike along the wild side on the packed sand next to the paved trail weaving your way through the mesa verde trees and mesquite. Bring your dogs too, they'll also enjoy it. Most of the year, the river bed is dry and filled with scrub brush common in the Sonoran desert, but occasionally in the spring when the snow melts in the mountains, or during the summer monsoon season, the river will completely fill and the water will rage. Some have even been known to try riding a raft when the water reaches the banks. (FYI, don't do this! It isn't safe.) There are several city parks like Brandi Fenton where you can park and start your journey. Best to look at maps online to find the closest entry point and parking location convenient to you; as the park does cross over a lot of streets. In the distance, you will be able to enjoy the view of Mt. Lemmon and the rest of the Santa Catalina mountain range as it turns different hues of pink, red, orange, brown depending on the time of day you come. Sunrise in the summer months and sunset in the winter are great times to go in order to stay comfortable temperature wise. The trail was an almost daily staple in our lives when we lived here and walked the dogs along the trail or cycled and ran with friends. Even returning, while driving through town, we couldn't help but stop and take a stroll down memory lane by revisiting this lovely gem in Tucson.
