My neighbor spoke quite highly of the quality of his work, and I contacted him. Before hiring David I found him quite communicative on any question I asked him. His pricing was very competitive, and I proceeded to hire him to install a complete gutter system on my house. David continued to communicate with me on all aspects of the job. His workmen were superb, and he monitored their work quite closely. The job was finished in one day. David is/was quite easy to contact by telephone as he answers his phone quickly, and if he is busy will return the phone call promptly when he is free, usually within minutes. I just contacted David again to do some additional drainage work, and he was just as easy to reach. He seems to be very sensitive to making sure that his customers are pleased with the quality of his work. We hired him two months ago to do a variety of things to our 100-yr old home in Cow Hollow: -rebuild front steps & entryway, including installing a new front door -install crown moulding on our main floor -rebuild deck in backyard -repair and replace dry rot at various locations on exterior of the house -a variety of smaller projects throughout the house As you can tell, it was a variety of interior/exterior projects, and Rich absolutely hit it out of the park. In the three years that we've owned our home, I'd been through more than 5 contractors before we found Rich. I can't recommend him highly enough. Let me tell you specifically why: 1. Attention to detail & quality of work -The finish work that Rich does is as good as I've ever seen. Every night we would come home and there would be no evidence that Rich had been there that day - no dust, no specks of paint, no tools left behind. Just the evidence of progress made on the job. Awesome. 2. Trustworthiness -We left Rich with a key to our house, not only while we were gone at work every day, but while we were away in Europe for two weeks 3. Guarantees -One of the boards that Rich installed on our front steps began to warp days after being installed. Not at all a problem with Rich's work, but a faulty piece of lumber. Regardless, Rich tore up the board and replaced it the next day, all at no additional cost and with no questions asked. 4. Customer-oriented & professional -All of Rich's quotes were sent to me as PDF's in email and clearly outlined in detail the proposed work. Following the job, he sent me an invoice. All very professional and customer-oriented. 5. Price -We sought out three bids for the work that we wanted done, and Rich was very competitively priced. Incredible value for money. In short, we can't say enough good things about him. We'd highly recommend him for home remodel / improvement projects. In the beginning, Joe was personable, responsive, and the initial meetings gave us confidence that we had found the right contractor for a major home renovation. Unfortunately, things changed once we started making payments. As the project progressed, the estimated square footage of our remodel seemed to shrink while the overall price continued to increase. We continued making payments because we believed we were close to having finalized plans, but there always seemed to be another delay or another step before everything would be complete. Joe did provide us with a nearly complete set of architectural plans, but the kitchen design process was outsourced to someone in another country. Coordinating meetings across time zones was difficult, and we were asked to make our final payment before we had even completed our final kitchen design consultation or reviewed the finished plans. Looking back, that was our mistake, and I take responsibility for that. As interest rates rose and construction costs continued increasing, we decided to put the project on hold. Rather than walk away entirely, we asked if the approximately $20,000 we had already paid could be applied toward a smaller renovation project in the $40,000-$50,000 range. Joe declined, explaining that our deposit had already covered the time and work invested in developing the plans. After further discussion, he agreed to apply only $1,000 toward a future project. I understand that design work has value and that contractors deserve to be paid for their time. My frustration isn't that I expected everything back. It's that throughout the process I often felt pressured to continue making payments with the promise that we were almost at the finish line, only for another delay or another reason to come up. By the end, I no longer felt like we were dealing with someone who was looking out for us as clients. Everyone's experience may be different, but if you're considering Meridian DesignBuild, I would strongly recommend making sure every phase of the design process is complete, all plans are finalized, and you fully understand how your deposits can be used before making additional payments.
