Bed bugs... I was bit all over my head and arm within 2 hours. We turned the light on to see they were everywhere.
Katie S.

We checked in and sat in our room for 2 hours before discovering bed bugs. They had no extra rooms available and told us to find a new hotel. I had to pay almost 3x the price at 230 in the morning. Had to fight to get my money back on top of being double charged. The manager refused to do anything to compensate me for having to pack up and leave at 230am on top of the outrageous price I had to pay at the only hotel still open for reservations. When I asked to speak to someone above her she told me they refused to speak to me. I told her I would be contacting the health department where she snarky replied "that's fine, they get called often they just ask us for our pest control records". Apparently them having bed bugs is a normal issue. I would stay far away from this place! Between the doubling billing, fiasco to get refunded and the scare of bringing bugs home with me... I'm exhausted.

It's not bad - front desk is really nice. Coffee close by, grocery stores, gas, right off the highway, and welcome pets.

And the hot breakfast was pretty good: they were serving sliced maple sausage links, scrambled eggs, and western potatoes the first morning, and then sausage patties, western omelets, and potatoes the 2nd morning. Aside from that, they had a waffle maker, Quaker oatmeal packets, cereal, plain bagels/white bread to toast, bananas, Yoplait yogurt, 1% milk, a juice machine, and then a coffee station in the lobby. The lady refilling the food stations was very friendly and did her job well. However, my friend and I noticed many poor design choices in the room (211) that was supposed to be newly renovated (at least I was told that the renovations in the rooms were all done): strange faucet placement in the corner so that your hand bumps the sink when you're washing; bathtub walls sloped inward so you have to do a balancing act while showering; no hooks in bathroom to hang towels or clothes; bathroom fan was very noisy and didn't seem to do much; bathroom door lock didn't work; room deadbolt was finnicky and I had to push/pull the door to the perfect configuration to lock it; no drawers or closet to put any belongings; fitted bed sheets were way too shallow for the mattress and kept popping off; and TV wouldn't let my Amazon fire stick connect to the internet. The lounge chair also looked like it was in rough shape, so I didn't use it (sat on the ottoman instead). I had read bad reviews for this place that made me nervous, but thankfully we didn't run into any major problems! My understanding is that management changed sometime last year, so evidently, that made a real difference. All in all a suitable stay, but might need another renovation in the rooms!

The pool was refreshing after a hard workout... perfectly warm. The comfy bed was like a festering womb for my feverish dreams. All too often, I have waking nightmares of paper jams and copy machines that won't stop spewing paper. The heaps of discarded scraps grow larger around me until I can't see or breathe. I succumb to choking in a despair of fiber and ink, and I know... in my heart... that one day, this is how I will die. I rate the Portage, Indiana Hampton Inn five stars.

My review is based largely upon an inflammatory sign posted in the lobby. I am a very big supporter…read moreof businesses having the freedom to post whatever they like inside their establishments, but on the same token I'm a big supporter of private citizens choosing to use another business because of said postings. I also support businesses requiring it's patrons to wear a mask on the property if they deem it necessary. What I do not support is offensive, divisive signage to get the point across. A simple "mark required" sign or something with clever humor is sufficient--not the rude, tacky sign that was posted at this hotel that clearly singled out folk of a certain demographic. In a world so full of hate and unkindness, this sign only adds to be negativity. As a tired, road weary traveler seeking nothing more than a little rest and respite from the road, this "greeting sign" caused me to promptly turn around, walk out the door and head to the Best Western across the street. I recommend you do the same and do not support a business that is so crass and low class.

There is a restaurant blocking the hotel from the road that looks like it's been closed for years. After pass that you see the hotel. The grounds immediately surrounding the building and the building itself looked fairly well maintained. On top of the entry there is a dish either being held in place by cinder block or being stabilized with them. The interior is super dated and really could use modernisation. We checked in and were told there was a 10$ pet fee. 10$ is low and I had no issues paying it but there was no mention of it on the hotel web page. I would have paid it at booking. No place on the web site during booking is there a place to say you are bringing a pet. Floor in the lobby was nice and clean and shiny. We went up to our room. The room was nice and spacious and also needed a good update and carpets need a super deep cleaned. NOTE TO HOTEL: stop using the dated bedspreads. A nice crisp clean white sheet is all that is needed. Bedspreads always get taken off and thrown aside. Room smelled clean and our sheets were clean and white. The blanket needs retired. It had holes in it. All night long people came and went thru the stairway door that is in need of a soft close spring. We skipped breakfast and went to McDonald's. Over all it worked for a place to sleep and shower that allowed the dog but not our normal standard of hotel.

I stayed here over Thanksgiving weekend to check out the Indiana Dunes. I stayed in a spa room,…read morewhich was amazing! Staff was friendly and helpful with any questions. Breakfast had waffles, bagels, cereal, and I believe eggs. The waffles were always good. I enjoyed the pool several times. I absolutely loved relaxing in the room spa tub after long days of hiking in the chilly air. Each room also had a small balcony on the floor I was on. The only downside is the walls are quite thin. I was privy to an entire argument (while I was trying to nap) as well as the ensuing "make up". Needless to say, my nap ended pretty quick and I headed back out to explore more of the area. Overall, the hotel was lovely and I would stay here again.

Breakfast had the usual hotel breakfast options (with better eggs) but ran out of milk and hot water wasn't working for the instant oatmeal. The halls and common areas were comfortable but our room was very humid and smelled wet despite the a/c running and fan on. Fairly outdated and furniture and fixtures are pretty beat up. Beds were comfortable but pillows were lumpy. Pool and sauna were standard hotel experience. It's fairly charming despite the negatives. This place kind of has a monopoly on places to stay near the dunes so the price is high - definitely not comparable with the experience but options are limited. Would probably still stay here again.
