I stayed here over Thanksgiving weekend to check out the Indiana Dunes. I stayed in a spa room, which was amazing! Staff was friendly and helpful with any questions. Breakfast had waffles, bagels, cereal, and I believe eggs. The waffles were always good. I enjoyed the pool several times. I absolutely loved relaxing in the room spa tub after long days of hiking in the chilly air. Each room also had a small balcony on the floor I was on. The only downside is the walls are quite thin. I was privy to an entire argument (while I was trying to nap) as well as the ensuing "make up". Needless to say, my nap ended pretty quick and I headed back out to explore more of the area. Overall, the hotel was lovely and I would stay here again. read more

I adore this charming inn. It is dated, but clean. I like the setting in the woods, and every room I. The main building has a balcony overlooking a wooded area. It is no frills, but I find small touches like trees with lights at night and the fire pit area more honey than a chain hotel. It kind of stirs my wanderlust. Only warning: I don't know hallways it does smell a little bit musty. If you are sensitive to smells, you may not love it. read more

A hotel that at one point must've been a jewel, truly what it calls itself: "a woodsy retreat.", is today in desperate need of renovation. By the decor, the hotel must've been built in the '50s or '60s and hasn't had much done to it since. You can clearly see where the paint was redone because it was done poorly and everything else is out-of-style and somewhat dilapidated. And at the around $150/night that I paid, certainly a regrettable stay. It does have charm and it is tranquil and quiet. If that's what you're looking for, you may be satisfied. But I was told that they're remodeling so, personally, I would wait. read more

This past weekend I had the pleasure of staying at this quaint inn! The picturesque setting with the woods and the homey lodge gave "White Christmas" vibes! The staff was extremely helpful and kind! There is a sun room off the end of the building that was perfect for a a bottle of wine and fabulous conversation! The breakfast in the morning was a great bonus! We also ate at the Village tavern which has an amazing burger and the drinks were great! Had dinner at Wagner's where we had enough for left overs of melt in your mouth pork sandwhiches! Quiet nostalgic location. Spacious rooms. However, the carpets are old and the rooms are not well cleaned. Very dusty. The AC unit filters were well caked. Cleaning them didn't help, and the whole room is need of airing out and dusting. I was very congested and had trouble breathing. I ended up opening both balcony doors, and inflating my camping mattress on the floor to sleep with my head near fresh air. If you or your kids a sensitive to dust, or have any respatory challenges... STAY WELL CLEAR of this lodging. read more

This is a hidden gem for a nice getaway, the beach is nearby, casino, shopping, restaurants, etc! Very nice clean rooms. Be sure to book a room facing the woods and the rooms have nice balcony's. Swimming pool is great. The desk staff was very friendly and helpful. The breakfast is better than most hotels. We have been staying at the Springhouse Inn since the late 90's early 2000's. It's a halfway point for us and our travels to Chicago and South Bend. We have always loved the woodsy setting and the country comfort feel of the place. Not to mention delicious dinners at Wagners around the corner!! This trip in mid October 2021 was our first trip back since 2012. When we left in 2012 we weren't sure if this place was going to survive due to the deteriorating condition it was in plus the lack of friendly staff. Well we were more than pleasantly surprised. Everything seems to be fresh - there is still work to be done but overall the Springhouse Inn is back!!! And we couldn't be happier. We had our favorite room with a gorgeous view of the woods and stream. It's so quiet too. We thought we were the only ones staying over the weekend it was so quiet but we weren't as noticed at breakfast! Kudos to the new owners for putting some love into the Springhouse Inn. Bad: Carpet in our room was damp and smelled musty. Free breakfast was awful. They also have weird signs in the bathroom threatening to charge you if you take things or break things. Been here multiple times. Nice hotel for under $100 but this last visit was disappointing. Just noticed there was no attention to detail. Pool is very dangerous. There is blue dye of some sort in the water and when the kids dive down you can't see them. It is especially difficult because the light reflects of water additionally making them hard to see. The pool is not a gradual decent from 3' to 5' so a 3' kid is going to be over their head quickly. Make sure you are watching your kids VERY closely and do not let them swim alone. You can see this in my photo as my daughter is in the center of the pool with black bathing suit and all you can see is her foot just sticking out of the water. read more

I've made it my life's work to bring this abomination of a "hotel" to an end. I would have been better off taking the family to a local truck stop to sleep in an unkept bathroom stall. First was the front desk clerk. Who was also our hotel neighbor while we stayed. Her male partner and two offspring made it their mission to create as much noise and commotion as possible while we stayed. Which is fine - but the constant yelling had the negative effect of loosing the carefully placed mold and dust on the walls that separated us. Which brings us to the room itself. Never in my life have I seen such an outdated, wore down, and semen stained bedroom in all my life. That's fine that you don't want to keep the rooms clean but some of us have children we care about and love - could you maybe advise us to leave them in the car while we sleep in our cum dumpster room? And another thing - I've been tracking/stalking this place for months now. You people that give them 5 stars, we know your game. You are either family of the owners or they have your dog and are threatening it's life unless you write a positive review. I had a reservation for 2 nights: a single woman traveling 7 hours arriving at 10pm with my dog. At the front desk I was asked for a cash only deposit of $100. (told on the phone it could be cash or credit). I did not have the cash and was SENT AWAY in a strange town, alone, in the cold and dark. I stood at the front desk and sobbed. They ignored me. Came back the next day with the cash for the second night and they had cancelled my reservation and told me there were no rooms available. I have never been treated with such disrespect and unkindness! They found a room for me and then charged me a $25 cleaning fee for my non shedding perfectly behaved dog. This is NOT a pet friendly hotel. It is not PEOPLE friendly either. Really a shame because it is a beautiful spot. I had looked forward to my stay for many weeks. Completely shocked and disappointed! We loved our stay here! The location was great. Literally 5 to 10 minutes away from the beach front or several restaurant options. It's been recently renovated so a lot of new things going on. You are just too cute Spring House Inn. I want to stick you in my pocket and take you with me everywhere. Your slogan of "Country charm in the heart of the Dunes" fits you well. For $59 (May) at the entrance of Indiana Sand Dunes State Park this little gem is a steal. A few lovely surprises we encountered during our stay: very spacious rooms with woodland view decks, indoor pool, sauna, feather pillows and a hot breakfast. Oh, and how could I forget the built-in bottle cap remover on the bathroom counter (borderline tacky, yet handy for parties on the spacious woodland view deck?). I have this special place in my heart for state park (near state park) accomodations. They have this no frills approach that always ends up being effortlessly quaint and charming all at the same time. Spring House Inn's charm can be found on the weeklong breakfast menu board in the foyer and the cozy pine furniture in the bedrooms. My only complaint would be that they still offer smoking rooms and the smell is quite present in the hallways. Fortunately, once you are in the room you can't smell it. For future reference: The front desk attendant shared that the rates only go up $10 during high season. Yep, still a steal, we'll be back for sure. Maybe next time we'll have a reason to use that nifty bottle cap opener in the bathroom. read more

First time staying here, everything was excellent. Very clean facility, it's under renovation and I can't wait to see the improvements next month. The rooms are large, comfy beds, a 4cup coffee pot, and has a small fridge & microwave. They have fresh coffee and lemon water available in the lobby. The location in the woods and cottage-y feel make this a great family spot, especially if you're looking to explore the Dunes and beach, a super close 10 minute drive. The waffle bar and pool were a big hit with the kids. We had a room that faced the woods, which was very cool, especially for that morning coffee. The absolute worst hotel experience ever! I've stayed in hotels in over 30 states and 17 countries. This is by far the worst. When I tried to check-in, nobody was found at the reception desk. After waiting for over 30 minutes I tried calling and nobody answered the call. When I finally found a worker after an hour of searching, she argued with me that she just assumed it was teenagers at the hotel prank calling her. Then went on to tell me I should've been more patient because she's the only one working. The place needs some major updates - from the leaking toilet and sink to the broken hairdryer and the wallpaper stuck in the 1970's. The walls are paper thin. If hearing what everyone in the rooms next to and above you are talking about is your thing, then this is the place for you. The included breakfast has a great selection of rotting fruit or vending machine junk food. The bugs on the walls were a nice touch and really added that special nature feeling. This place has a lot of potential...it was previously owned by Al Capone but it has certainly gone down hill since he owned the property. He would be disappointed. read more

We have stayed here five times now and it is a good place to get away to. I travel a lot for business in this is a good, comfortable, inexpensive, and isolated place to kickup and relax. I don't know why someone would make it their life's ambition to discredit this property but we found it very nice and suitable for getaways. The Spring House Inn and I go way back. This was always my family's go-to hotel for the local Wizard of Oz Festival in Chesterton. It was also a clear choice for us anytime we wanted to visit Chicago. The Dune Park Train Station is just a few minutes away, which makes it easy to hop over to the city and back without the headaches of traffic and parking. Honestly, I've lost track of how many times I stayed here between family vacations as a kid, trips to Chicago with my college friends, birthday getaways, etc. However, the last time I stayed at the Spring House in May of 2017, I was greatly surprised to find the place in great disrepair and filled with rude and inhospitable staff. The rooms were dusty, everything in the pool/sauna was broken, and breakfast was virtually nonexistent. That being said, I wasn't quite ready to give up on such a fond childhood memory yet. This brings us to my most recent last week. A group of friends and I planned a trip up to Chicago for a concert. None of us wanted to bother with city traffic or the insane cost of hotels. So, I took a chance and recommended we all stay here so we could take advantage of low rates and the nearby train. Upon arrival, I was very glad to see a crew hard at work on renovations and updates to the hotel. The lobby was bright and clean again, as were the rooms. Granted there was some apparent age to the furnishings in the room, but as we walked down the hall, we could see rooms being actively updated with new furniture, linens, and flat panel TVs. I can't wait for our next stay so we can see how all the updates turned out. I was also very happy to see the breakfast return to its former glory with decent, hot foods and a waffle maker and toppings. On my way into the hotel, I twisted my ankle and the staff was very accommodating. They quickly got my ankle wrapped up (one of the desk attendants was a former RN) and got me an ice pack. Anytime I was in the lobby or passed a staff member in the halls, they made sure to ask how my ankle was and if there was anything they could do to make my stay more comfortable. Speaking of which, I was glad to see the pool and sauna refurbished and working! The alternation of hot (sauna) and cool (pool) really helped to ease the pain and swelling of my ankle. Last but not least, I need to mention price. I don't think the rates here have been increased by more than $5-10 since the early-to-mid 2000s. How many places do you know of that haven't raised their rates in 20 years? Of course, I suspect the rates might go up due to the rehab of the property, but I wouldn't mind that too much. I'm very glad to see this place making a comeback and can't wait to see the final results! read more

We have been coming here for years, it has always been a charming setting but under the new ownership (a few years ago) it gets even better with every visit. The property is well maintained, the staff is very friendly and helpful and there are common areas inside and out to enjoy where you can watch tv, sit and visit, read or just relax. The entire setting has come alive again with the "Speakeasy at the Spa" a short walk down the sidewalk where you can have a drink, eat and listen to live music. This is a good romantic get way spot or equally as comfortable for a family gathering. We will returning as soon as time allows. read more

The Spring House is a work in progress. A good deal for the price. Charming is the word to describe this place. Woodsy, lodges like, lots of potential. The long hallways will give you a Stephen King The Shining feeling but other than that, the place is a nice stay. I'd like to come back and see the front grounds weeded and the trees pruned. The parking lot needs repaving and the front door doesn't open all the way due to an inadequate closers. The sauna is under renovation. But the pool is nice, the rooms are clean, the beds are comfy. WiFi and the satellite TV leaves room for improvement. Like I said previously, the place holds a great deal of potential. read more

Wow. Talk about just phoning it in. Staff here puts exactly zero effort into their job. They seem to mostly stand around gossiping in the halls. The place is completely run down. The furniture in the lobby is worn out, ripped and torn. As you walk in, look up and behold they layers of filth on the ceiling fan. There was an odd, smoky smell throughout. The continental breakfast was a joke. Styrofoam plates, cold sausage that you have to microwave, hard boiled eggs that are the texture of rubber balls. The waffle iron is there...why don't they just throw some batter together? It's not hard, not expensive, and it would make a difference, especially when the rest of the breakfast is so pathetic. Oh...the room...wow. We walked in and there and there was this gigantic jacuzzi tub in the middle of the room...broken. The hatch for the controls was taped in place, the jets didn't work, and it was dirty. They told us they didn't charge for it, which is fine, but why put a guest in a room with broken stuff? We hadn't even requested a jacuzzi room. Also broken - the coffee maker, the towel rack, the door to the balcony (wouldn't latch) and the regular tub drain didn't work, so there was no way to take a bath at all. The front door had a big crack in it. Did I mention dirty? There were dribbles of shampoo in the tub from the previous residents, the coffee make was never cleaned (once we got it working), the ice bucket was full of water. There was dust and dead moths everywhere. There's a big for sale sign on the property as you drive in. My best guess is that the owners have lost money and are trying to dump the place and have just given up. When that happens, the staff follows suit. They just don't care. That's just a guess, but so many of these things would be so easy to resolve with just a little effort and very little money. Just throw out the busted furniture in the dining room and lobby. Clean the rooms - they may be dated, but if they're spotless, I can overlook it. I don't need or expect the Ritz for these prices, I just want clean and friendly. On the plus side, the bed was comfortable, the AC worked, and the location was very good. read more

This is actually a ZERO star review....unfortunately the lowest rating you can give a facility is one star. Sadly, that is being way to generous for this nightmare of a facility. My fiancee and her best friend decided just last week to take a trip up north, get some beach time in and a quick shopping excursion to Chicago. After looking over the various lodging options, based upon the pictures and information provided by Spring House, they decided to book a week there. From the moment they drove into the parking lot, the red flags began to drop. Upon entering the facility a very unpleasant moldy smell was predominate throughout the interior common areas. They booked a room with a ceiling fan and fridge. At check in, there was no working luggage cart and no baggage clerk to help them with their baggage. Upon entering their room, there was no fridge. After haggling with the desk person (the ONLY employee in the entire facility), they were moved to a different room on a different floor. When I say moved, they were forced to move on their own with no staff assistance. Upon entering the "new" room, there was no ceiling fan. At this point they were tired of the nonsense and decided just to stay in this room. My financees friend was bitten twice by spiders. The furniture was extremely filthy. The patio furniture was missing. TV had only ONE channel. At breakfast the next morning, the eating area was filthy, the toaster did not work. The muffins were so stale, they actually crumbled in your hands. At this point, both ladies were fed up, went to the desk and notified them they were checking out early. Upon questioning of the desk clerk, they were told that the only way to get an adjustment on their bill was to talk to the owners....who...conveniently....were not there. They were told that the owners would call and discuss their experience with them. It's been 4 days and no call. I doubt very seriously if they will call and given the performance of this facility, I doubt very seriously if there will be any honest attempt to do the right thing for these ladies. I don't know about the reviews giving this facility more than one star. It is inconceivable they would rate this facility so high. Their standards must be extremely low. The photographs the facility provides to prospective visitors are extremely misleading and do NOT provide an accurate portrayal of the actual condition of this facility. It borders on criminal to mislead a consumer in this manner. For those you contemplating a trip to this area, be forewarned. You are better off pitching a tent or sleeping in your car. Very secluded and charming, but showing wear. The second floor smells of cigarettes. They are understaffed, and it shows in the details-bugs in bathroom lights, no towels at the pool, poor breakfast, garbage strewn parking lot. The staff that WAS there was friendly and accommodating. I would try it again if only they'd clean it up. The bright spot in my weekend stay was the speakeasy next door. It was like stepping back in time-well kept and staff was amazing. My partner and I stayed here one night while driving cross-country and it was such a welcome break from roadside motels and chains! Beautiful view of the woods from our room, a sweet little deck, clean spacious rooms, comfortable bed, super kind staff, and all kinds of personal touches (loved perusing the yearbook from 1930 in the hallway). The first room we were given unfortunately had a broken sink faucet in the bathroom, but the staff quickly and kindly switched us to the room next door. I could have done without the television playing during breakfast (felt counter to the peacefulness of the rest of the environment) and would love to see a move away from styrofoam/plastic to dishes/utensils that are more eco-friendly... but all in all, a wonderful gem. Also seems super convenient for anyone visiting the lake/dunes. We'll be back! read more

I would have rated this place higher but the attitude of the general manager Danielle caused this low rating. All of the other staff were great. I stayed in room 217 and woke at 1:45am to a bug on my forehead. A bedbug. Just one but it still creeped me out and I thought if I could verify no other bugs on bed I'd be OK, so I stripped the bed. The bed literally had a cut across the mattress going into the springs so I had no idea if there were more in there or not. I went to the front desk and told Sue what happened. She was very apologetic and set me up with room 203 and asked me to check it first. I went in and without even touching the sheets I could see evidence that the bed at least at one time had had bugs (black along the seem of the mattress where the housekeeping hadn't covered it). So I told and showed Sue this, she then gave me room 215. I stripped the sheets and saw no evidence of bugs, put the sheets back on and moved everything. Afterward I brought her the old keys and she told me to see Danielle in the morning and again apologized. I went to sleep, no bites, new room was good. In the morning (this last Sunday) right before we were going to Church I thought I'd go down as Sue asked me to. Wow, HUGE MISTAKE! I asked if she was Danielle and told her Sue told me to come see her. She said that "she had heard of all of the trouble I caused the night before" (like I really wanted to waste 1 hr checking rooms and moving stuff and sleeping children). She then proceeded to tell me that "no way was it a bedbug because you can't see them as they are see through" it didn't matter that I showed her pictures of them to prove they aren't see through she insisted she was right and said that she wasn't gong to believe it was a bedbug. I told her that it was only one and that I was freaked out because of the mattress being cut since they hide in mattresses and showed her the pic of the cut and the bug I smooshed. I let her know that it could have been from whoever stayed in the room before us, I didn't know, but the fact that the mattress was cut open was why I came to the desk. She said they had replaced 80% of the mattresses and that they apparently missed that one and that they can't possibly have any bedbugs because they spray once a month. I tried to let her know that spraying doesn't stop new bugs because they don't use stuff like ddt anymore (banned by epa) but you know, she was the expert on see through bedbugs that never come back know after spraying lol. I told her I wasn't going to argue as she was calling me a liar then she insisted I go get my credit card and be back at the desk by noon even though I had already paid for two nights she said she didn't want us there and was going to check us out. I explained that being memorial day there were no other hotels to go to and that 215 was fine. I then gave her some simple advice- to put a bedbug cover over the cut mattress in 217 and she told me of that she cleaned it up and redid the sheets to give it to someone else that morning and said eventually they would change out the mattress. Based on conversationsome with other staff apparently the owner is like Danielle. Moral of the story (and hopefully Danielle and the owner will read this) - if someone brings to your attention a possible bedbug issue or any issue (no matter how big or small) don't treat them with utter disrespect. Instead you can still not admit by apologizing, and not pointing it all on the customer. While the majority of the staff (everyone else I saw other than Danielle) had great customer service skills, Danielle is severely lacking in them and really has no business whatsoever dealing with customers. I started my visit (as the staff will say) by taking pictures of the place and sending them off to others who will be traveling in the area and recommending this place. Even the one bedbug didn't have me against this place and I was still recommending it as I know the person before us could have dropped a straggler off on their visit.but the crazy reaction of the general manager..yep deal broke. read more

This place is an odd duck, in many ways it is very nice (nice views, pretty hallways, nice logo etc. but in other ways it leaves something to be desired... smoky smells in our first room and in the hallway though our 2nd room (upgraded for free for our trouble) was better. The pool and sauna were closed when we were there (which was THE reason we chose this place near the dunes) due to "renovations" though the pool merely appeared empty of water. In the morning the "deluxe continental breakfast" was skimped down to just cereal and milk (though an entire room was clearly intended for the spread. We left a day early. Oh ya, and the truckers. I swear I was the only female aside from staff... truckers in the lobby nearly 24-7. Huh. read more
