Absolutely Disgusting. The room smells of harsh cleaning chemicals, but the real reason for 1 star was the living worms that would rise out of the sink when you turned the water on. Additionally, the sink was broken so not all the water went down the drain, but would leak out the back and onto the counter... WORMS and all!!! There were also quite a few flies that kept finding a way inside despite killing them all and not opening the door... I attempted to stay here a single night after watching a concert at The Greek, but it was so disgusting we opted to just drive home. Currently in disputes to get a refund for the night we didn't even stay, but they are fighting that despite it being a health concern. Hopefully the money they don't give back with actually go to repairing this terrible property. TLDR; Would absolutely not recommend this place. Stay anywhere else but here. read more

If I could leave zero stars I would. This was genuinely one of the worst hotels I've stayed at. It was so bad that after being in the room for less than 30 minutes we'd reached out to Expedia, obtained a full refund and were on our way to a different hotel couple blocks away at 8:30 at night. They'd lended out to the room to 4 adults. When we brought up the concern that the room was way too tiny to accommodate 4 grown adults, let alone their luggage they were quick to say that the room was ideally only for 2 adults or adults with small children and agreed that it'd be a tight fit for 4 adults. Okay, why'd you list it as appropriate to accommodate 4 adults then??? The room didn't look clean at all. The sheets were yellowed, the faucet was practically loose and wobbling. Upon inspection of the rest of the sink setup, the plumbing was completely wrong, and continued usage of the sink would've resulted in the sink cabinet flooding. The complementary napkin dispenser was completely empty. The wiring for the blowdryer was completely broken and just out in the open. How are you gonna say the room can accommodate small children when it's so unsafe? Looking at the rest of the terrible reviews I'm starting to think our experience wasn't that bad since we left pretty quickly and were able to find accommodations somewhere else. We msg to let them know we were checking in late. We get there, parking is small... Had to wait outside for someone to come to the check in window to check us in and to tell us where to park (on the street) Oh and don't forget to move your car by 9am, or 8 am can't remember what she said. We went into room... it smelled like humidity and there was a febreze bottle but it was empty! Okay... The bed sheets had dark stains.. we stayed on night as we drove 8 hours .... That night... was hot and humid in the room. We turned on the AC! Nope bad decisions as that thing made noise and did not let us sleep! As it still did not cool the room but the fan kinda worked so we left it on... sleep like 4hrs or so... if that! We msg them Saturday morning if we can cancel and get refund. Person said yes! It is absolutely disgusting and I am amazed they can stay in business. So I had gotten into town a bit earlier then I had anticipated. I called the receptionist to see if they had a room ready, he said no (this was at 1145am when I called). I kind of figured that they wouldn't have a room ready at that time since check out is roughly around 11 AM. The gentleman that helped me though, told me to come in an hour and they would have my room ready and sure enough they did. The room is absolutely more then what i had expected! TV is huge, bed is well made and super clean sheets/blanket/pillows. everything is clean & it smells like bleach so I definitely know they cleaned :) which is a PLUS PLUS for me especially during these COVID times! Also, shout out to the cleaners (Maria especially)! They are awesome & they work super hard and deserve to be treated with respect!! They make sure to check on you every morning (if you're staying multiple nights) and ask if you want new bed sheets, blankets etc.. this place has been great to me!! *This is more like a 3 star hotel, definitely not a 2 Star. read more

I've stayed here 4 times in the last 4 years. The rooms are small but clean. They are in the middle of a renovation so the place is a little torn up but i didn't have any issues with it. I've seen complaints which seem trivial. If you have a problem with the room price, become a Choice Hotels member where you can save $. Quality Inn is a mid level hotel. Comfort Suites is more of a business class so maybe spend the money if your concerned about size and quality and the same goes for the complementary breakfast. read more

Not sure why a lot of reviews complain about cleanliness and the rooms smelling terribly, but we had a surprisingly pleasant stay at Quality Inn University. It was among the cheapest hotels we could find in the Berkeley area and we were reading all these negative reviews, so we did have low expectations. The neighborhood may be a bit sketchy but we felt safe overall. From our perspective, the hotel looked newly renovated. At least we think the paint looks new. The entire complex is well-lighted during the evenings. It is located on University Ave and is a good mile away from UC Berkeley. Very close to Trader Joe's. Parking lot is pretty small. Room is good-sized. Massive mirror with some really bright lights. No bed bugs (at least in our room). Will definitely stay here again. read more

Quality Inn is OK. It's right off the freeway on University Ave, so it's easy to find if you're coming from out of town. Reasonable rates for the Bay Area, clean atmosphere, small rooms (made even smaller with a king size bed) with satellite TV and a good sized bathroom. They offer a complimentary continental breakfast which is pretty decent. Two things kept me from giving a better rating. First, the parking lot isn't large enough to accomodate all guests (I'd estimate maybe half the guests can park there) and the lot was full when we arrived, so we had to find street parking. Univesity isn't that bad of a street but the area around the hotel was kinda sketch. We had to walk a couple blocks through transients and weed-smoking loiterers, in cold windy rainy weather. Blech. Second, at around 9am the housekeeping staff came through. I know this because we were woken up by a maid opening our door- which in a small square room with no hallway, she opened it up to see us in bed- saying "Whoops!", then closing the door. I realize we forgot to put the 'Do Not Disturb' sign out, but the door was locked and what happened to knocking and announcing "housekeeping" BEFORE entering? Geez. read more

Absolutely horrible! To begin with, the rooms are small, the parking is insufficient, the refrigerator didn't work, the keys kept malfunctioning, there is no safe to secure valuables, our window faced a cement wall, the floors are dirty (I wiped some spilled water in the cramped bathroom/sink area and was disgusted with the grime), and the walls are paper thin. The bonus? Our room (107) was adjacent to the housekeeping closet! Each morning we were awaken to loud talking by the maids beginning at about 7:00 am. It gets better - around 4:00 pm we were getting out of the shower, not yet clothed when a housekeeper opened the door without warning (the room had already been cleaned). Wrong room? Looking for valuables? But yes, she got the birthday suit surprise! Upon checkout we tried expressing our displeasure with the front desk with no resolve. On the way to Oregon my husband and I stopped in Berkeley. We'd planned to camp at Lake Chabot but given the 10 pm curfew decided to buck up and find a cheap hotel instead. Driving down University to find another hotel, we saw the Vista Inn & Suites and decided to Google it on the ever helpful iPhone. It looked newer and nicer than most of the cheap sleeps, and indeed, after calling found that it was $99 a night including tax, parking and breakfast. We were sold. We stayed in room 107, which was tucked back in a corner. For the price, I'd expected a Motel 6 type place, but was pleasantly surprised! The room (as well at the hotel) had just been remodeled, and looked like a cute (albeit inexpensive) boutique hotel room. In Santa Barbara,this place would go for $250 + a night. Our room had an awesome king size bed, a plasma tv, and a great bathtub (which I enjoyed since I don't have a tub at home.) It was close enough to campus, as well as a bunch of fabulous restaurants. And I slept wonderfully. No noise, nice mattress, awesome black out curtains! The breakfast was a normal continental, cereal, bagels, danishes, yogurt, coffee etc. Nothing special, but appreciated none the less. Vista, Inn & Suites, we'll see you next time! read more

The Pros: Is that you get a flat screen w/HD cable TV,Coffee Maker,small closet, wide sink,bath,yadi,yada,yada,yada....whatever its complete here. The Cons: Weak cell phone signals here, going 4G is a pain, use their free WiFi it helps a little bit. Rooms are decent but having a king sized bed inside takes up a lot of room. Ouch! how many times must my knee hits the corner of the bed? My other gripe is that the pillows are too small, you can't even use them for pillow fights but just throw them at people. The Dream: I just had a moment of two hot Berkeley chicks in Victoria Secret lingerie pillow fighting on that comfy king size... feathers flying everywhere... sigh... bummer. The location for this hotel is great! Walking distance from U.C. Berkeley, with tons of eating options nearby. Cleanliness was a bit of an issue. On our way out I realized that sheets had a small blood stain on them. The breakfast was a joke. It was picked clean in short amount of time. Another guest told us he got a cup of coffee only one of his six days. what was left of breakfast at 9am was bruised, nasty apples, a bagel and a half, an old sausage patty, some cereal, and some milk that may have been left out too long. I went looking for a plastic knife for my bagel, and looked in the back room of the breakfast area. What I found was a bathroom/food prep area (incidentally, the toilet seat was left up). Caveat emptor. It's tough finding a good but inexpensive place in the area near/east of San Fran. After staying here, I believe it just might be impossible. Most of the reviews seemed okay, but a garden of yellow flags started blooming when I got to the parking lot and there was no space. How did the hotel have so laughably few spaces? A few were taken for construction but a few rooms were getting renoed so it should have evened out. I ended up parking back to back with the manager's fortunately small car, since I would be leaving before the car needed to move, and it left enough space to use the driveway. Still had to worry about someone scraping up against me. I asked about parking on the street since the meters wouldn't be active all night, and the desk clerk said he would recommend against it. "Oh, the streets are safe... but I would park in this lot." So the streets are not safe. Whoops, thought this part of Berkeley would be okay. Caveat emptor. Room itself? A minus on cleanliness, got an abandoned wrapper in front of the microwave and just general dinge in the bathroom area. Not sure they ever clean the toilet with more than a rag on a stick. I felt icky just using the remote to watch TV. The Dish remote was useless. Otherwise adequately sized, neither dated nor modern, bed reasonably comfortable but I certainly gave the sheets a once-over before tucking in. I actually slept relatively well, except for the loud conversation outside at 1 AM that completely ruined my sleep for the rest of the night. I guess that's not "relatively well". At least it was just one interruption and they stayed quiet thereafter. The clearly stoned/drunk guy in the room next to me was also friendly about turning down his music. But you can see the type of people who stay here. Caveat emptor. If you value the guest experience, you'll have to pay more to stay in this area. I can't believe I have to say this about a place I spent over $100 on, but you get what you pay for. Since I did actually end up with a mostly quiet stay without getting bedbugs, I won't pull back all the stars, but I'm not exactly glowing and raving about it. read more

On a positive note, if you're looking to buy hard drugs without a reference, or if you're shopping for a stolen laptop - both were offered to me on University Ave - this place is for you. The staff doesn't replenish the coffee in the breakfast room very often, but to be fair to the desk clerk, it's not easy to monitor the coffee while standing in the parking lot talking on the phone and smoking cigarettes. 15 parking spaces for 30 rooms (4 of the spaces occupied by hotel staff) means to snag a spot, you'll need to be lucky. Or you can fight, like the two guests who wanted the same spot did the night I stayed. Street parking is metered and limited to 2 hours. Quality Inn has no control at all over the drugs, panhandlers, theft, and general filth of the neighborhood, but Bay Area schmay area, a run-down room in a sketchy 'hood without parking shouldn't ever go for over $100. read more

Let me start by saying that I've stayed in my fair share of weird motels/hotels/hostels across the country and I have a high threshold for funky. This dump was by far the dirtiest place I've ever stayed. Nothing says hospitality like a concierge wearing a hospital face mask, yet being flu season I tried to looked the other way. Walking into the room my nose was met with the funk of after-sex combined with shame. My husband and I went so far to put on extra clothes to go to bed in fear we'd get scabies. Couldn't even open the fridge because it was so close to the bed, the counters were sticky, toothpaste all over the wall and mirror around sink, hooker's underwear in the dresser, and a line of blow left on the carpet. The only good thing about this place is we didn't get robbed or murdered. The kind of hotel out of a Quentin Tarantino murder scene. Good luck, folks. read more

Old motel on busy, noisy street in a bit of sketchy neighborhood. Rooms were clean but tiny. Way too expensive but may be due to reasonable proximity to Cal-Berkeley campus. Breakfast was limited and unpalatable. Breakfast room was tiny and no food allowed outside. We booked this room for 2 adults and 2 children for a 3 night stay, it was extremely small with no place to put luggage. The manager took over 30 minutes to check us in as his system was slow. We went to the room and 10 minutes later checked out. I was refunded for 2 days (hopefully) it has credited my card yet, and paid $180 for a room i want going to use. I told the manager that since I paid for the room I was going to find a homeless person to take a shower and get in our of the rain for the night. The manger said I had better not even think of bringing 'those people' in because it would take him weeks to get the stink out. He also mentioned what a hard economic time it is for small businesses, I believe in Karma, i hope he doesn't become one of 'those people' read more

I've always had good luck here. Yes, my key often doesn't work until they come to the room, try it, and it works (Stupid Flanders), but the staff is great, and the rooms have always been very clean. It's also relatively quiet, except for anytime there is a Berkeley game, and then fans of either team prove how much spirit they have by the number of drinks and decibels they can maintain until 2am. But, I went to the University of Minnesota, and games seemed to bring out everyone's inner pyro, so that was tame. It is a few blocks from Trader Joe's, Downtown Berkeley, and a 15 minute walk to campus, and no stay in Berkeley would be complete without popping into a Dispensary, 3 within 10-15 walk. I appreciate its simplicity. Free parking. A comfortable bed with comfortable pillows, easy check-in, and privacy. (I've stayed in other hotels in Oakland where the people who check you in act like you are imposing on them, and give you that look. I once checked in a place after a friend called, and invited him over since he was nearby and it had been a while. When I called down to ask for the password, the woman said, "There are 3 people in your room!" I said, "They are two friends who just stopped by to say hi. She said, "But you only have 1 person listed for the room! When ate they planning to leave? It is already 9pm!" I said, "It's 9pm on a Friday, and when a friend stops over, I don't ask, 'When are you planning to leave?' But they aren't staying here." ) So, I really appreciate not being treated like I'm 16 and told to leave my door open, but just given the privacy and some space I usually would expect. read more

Stayed in the hotel for one week while finishing a class at Berkeley. The rooms are approx 20x12ft, very small or much smaller than I'm used to. Breakfast was freezer cold most mornings and they provided the same exact meal everyday. I stayed because I didn't want to take on the task of finding a new hotel while I was busy with school. I've stayed in other Quality Inns but this one was by far the worst. They even checked me out a day early and called me while I was in San Fran to inform me that my stuff was still in the room. Overall, I felt safe and the bed was nice but will never stay here again. Will try a bed and breakfast next time. If you're used to the suburbs, try something outside of downtown Berkeley. read more

The bedding looks dirty too. The desk and chair are old and not in good condition. They did provide breakfast in a tiny room with three small tables only. The open access of the hotel make me insecure. The front desk staff name started with R was friendly though. But the overall facilities are far below the price they charged. Almost went to this Quality Inn in Berkeley for a 90-something dollar stay with Priceline. The reservation was pay at the hotel. Upon arrival, there was a proud "best price guaranteed" poster opposite the front desk. The clerk mentioned the reservation was through Booking, but in fact it was Priceline, and he explained there would be two necessary card charges if I were to stay, the second being a $100 incidental with a 5 to 7 day hold on that amount before it would go back onto my card. Aware of the time-value of money, I explained nowhere did the incidental amount display on Priceline. I opted to stay down the street at Howard Johnson's on principle. read more

This is a great place if you're visiting the Berkeley campus. The staff is laid back and very nice. On the day I had to check out, I had to attend an event that would span the entire day; they let me leave the car there for the entire day (parking turns out to be a pain). Room was tiny with no extra room whatsoever. the walkway between the bed and dresser to get to bathroom was probably only 18inches. the fridge doesnt fit right in the cupboard so the door on cupboard doesn't close so it sticks out into the already small walkway. Bed sheets had pee stains right in the middle of the fitted sheet. Floor was soaked underneath sink from housekeeping and reeked of bleach so I'm thinking it was a spill that didn't get cleaned up. No soap in bathroom either. Very limited parking as well also no hot water. I've worked at 4 different hotels so I know what is acceptable and what isn't. Worst place I've ever stayed at..we first got there and this high school teacher was talking to the manager as we just check in and saying. There was a lot of illegal activity going on in the parking lot, next to people's hotel bottom rooms....and wanted to be moved upstairs. So we requested to move upstairs it's ok looking hotel room but the hygiene is not there.. If you're looking to stay in a brothel/prison/homeless camp then this is your destination. Blood on the bed sheets and 30+ hairs in the bed. Steve and the boys must've had a great time humping. If you used a black light you could see the amount of cum all over the walls. STDs were a free complimentary service if you slept in the beds. Looking to score some drugs? Just head outside and ask literally anyone and you'll score something. The hotel room didn't have towels in it. The fridge doesn't open because of how close it is to the bed. The room keys are fantastic because it only takes 57 attempts until it will open the door, really cool! I speak Spanish and could hear the maids talking shit about us, they had lovely things to say. The girls working there repeatedly were flipping off the guys in the front ( probably family) but it came off awkward as were just getting there and seeing this. There's a breakfast room the size of my grandmas jewelry box and during breakfast the couple in the room above the breakfast room we're going TO TOWN. Sounded like a great time. The owners of this hotel are very accommodating. I have taken students here for the past few years for Model United Nations Conference and the hotel has always been so kind and efficient. The rooms are comfy, a bit small, but fit the bill. I like the sinks, they are very modern. There is a small refrigerator inside the room. There is a heater/air conditioner. It's a small hotel. It's a double story. Wifi and continental breakfast that consists of Activia yogurt, danishes, fruit, coffee, orange juice etc....They have cereal too. I wouldn't say that it is in the safest area of Berkeley, but it still works out very well. It's close to Shattuck Street and University so there are a lot of restaurants on the way up to Berkeley. I would say its about a 20 minute walk up to Berkeley. There is a Trader Joes right by the hotel which is very convenient. We have stayed her every year because of the hotel staff.
