There is a library on the bottom level and classes for people to learn the teaching of Buddha, Thai language and culture. The upper level is where the temple is located. There wasn't anyone there when we visited since it was a weekday morning, and I'm sure covid had something to do with it too. My friend and I were looking for a comfortable place to meditate and find inner peace while the external reality of this year continues to tarnish. It was hot because there was no air condition but it didn't matter to us, we were grateful for the temple to be open and for providing us with a safe place to practice. Thank you.

Couple rules as a lady monk you cannot touch them, one meal a day, meditate most of the day, do some cleaning around the temple. (A request from a friend to write more so this is going to be off topic, so skip to recap for a low down of Wat Suddhavasa) We started the meditation with four monks. Don't understand what they're saying but into it you feel centered. You should allowed your mind to wonder and allowed it to come back again. Your eyes are closed, your hands together in a praying positions, you're sitting on the floor. I'm not flexible so I just lean against a sofa. Somewhere you started to reflect... "I miss you, papa" It's nice to be at a Temple it's serene, monks are pleasant and I get to practice my Thai. My sisters and mom look beautiful. After the prayer, a monk gave a little speech... had to call mom on this one it didn't really stick hahaha. He(monk) said, and I'm paraphrasing, people give back to monks and temple, to buddhism and they often wonder of all the donation and giving why is it I'm still stuck in a rut. I thought that by giving I will get something in return... perhaps find peace and money would start rolling in? Monk said, it's not enough to just give and expect something in return. There are three things that you should considered: one, your actions. Are your actions withing the realm of buddhism? There are five principles: don't steal, don't cheat, ... dang I don't know the other three. It's been a long time since I'd gone to Buddha school. Two, your donations does not necessary going to show return in this life. Perhaps you are suffering through Karma. In that you are repaying for your past sin. Third, you should have good intention in your action. This is similar to Wayne Dryer teaching, "The power of Intention" I don't remembered the details but in my world I do good with the intention to make others happy. I tried not to hurt other people. Perhaps there are some goodness that comes from buddha teaching that I'm practicing on a day-to-day basis. But it's hard. So again, it comes back to intention. If you mean well, hopefully the other party sees that and if the result happened to be bad. Well, hopefully she/he understands. Then we pray again this time we "Quad Nam", this is a tradition way to focus on your wishes and making wishes. You'd place your index finger in this golden cup and while the monks are saying their prayers you slowly pour "prayer" water from this little golden vase over your finger, your family can join in and if it's too crowded you can receive that goodness for touching the person who's fingers are being blessed from the "prayer" water. All the while you are saying your wishes. Then we go outside and, "Thum Boud" basically each person gets a bowl of rice and we spoon a little of rice for each monk. Naturally you don't want to run out because then the few last monks wont get any rice. So you'll need to know how many monks are coming and portion it properly. You should take off your shoes while doing so and avoid wearing black to temple. White and tan color and consider earthy and grounded so wear them color. Then we passed entrees to the monks and they spoon a little of each in their "bowl" if they don't want it they'll just touch the plate and you hand it off to the next guy who happened to be in front of another monk and he'll hand it to the monk in front of him. Only guys allowed to do this. It's actually kinda fun. I like handing stuff so what! LOL After monks get their food they move to their room. Finally, we go outside and enjoy a home cooking Thai food. Each person bring food to the Temple and after the prayer it's buffet time. And with Thai food you can expect spicy stuff. Love mom's cooking. Usually it's not something you'll find in Thai restaurant. There weren't a lot of people attending since it's in Riverside but plenty of food. I had my mom's spicy fried string beans (not haricot vert, the chinese kind) with pork shoulders so you get a little fat. Very spicy, very tasty! Then I had pan fried minced pork with basil and chilis. And of course, top my jasmine rice with Thai curry, yellow I think. There were coconut milk, button mushroom, young bamboo shoots. Yuummm! Yes, I went back for second. The plastic plate they were handing out were small, yeah that's it hahaha. Nothing fancy about dessert, just cuts of watermelon. Thai desserts are awesome. It's beautifully decorated and usually has coconut milk with plum sugar and sticky rice. And they're in "petit fours" size. You can find them in Thai Town Holloywood area. If you love sweets and coconut you'll love Thai dessert. And if I decided to ask you out, remember to ask me to take you there. This is a little private Vietnamese Buddhist temple tucked away in the hills. We stopped by a few…read moremonths ago during Lunar New Year and were shocked by how picturesque it is once you're here. They are not open to the public during the week (members only and all the chants are done in Vietnamese) but on Saturdays, they are open to the public for worship. This is mostly run by volunteers and a few monks (they call them masters) and everyone is very friendly and nice. Though we do not speak Vietnamese they were very welcoming to us. I would highly recommend if you're Vietnamese and looking for a Buddhist temple to visit or be a part of.

This is a Theravada monastery that primarily serves the Vietnamese community in Riverside County…read more I sat two ten-day silent meditation retreats there. [The last time I was there was four months ago - reposting an earlier google maps review is a tad overdue.] The emphasis is on insight practice (AKA mindfulness, or vipassana "clear seeing"). At this particular retreat the head teacher, the Ven. Khippapanno, offered instruction in anapanasati breathing (as a concentration practice) then moved on to the body sweeping technique taught by Sayadagyi U Ba Khin, and popularized by SN Goenka. We ended the retreat with some Metta practice. If you're used to western meditation centers, sitting a retreat here will be an interesting change of pace. While retreatants will spend 90% of their time in the meditation hall (there are three of them here), their (shared) dorm rooms or the dining hall; the grounds feature a large shrines, a stupha, quite a few interesting statues, and what looks like a large library/guest lounge. Some of buildings are quite impressive, and the shrine is beautiful. When you practice walking meditation, it feels as though you're walking through a small Buddhist city. Please note: Most of the instruction is given in Vietnamese. While the monks and nuns in residence do their best to provide translations of the instructions and talks in a timely manner; it's helpful to have some prior retreat experience, before going on retreat here. I imagine the experience is akin to that of the Europeans and Americans who travel to study at convents, monasteries and meditation centers abroad in the fifties, sixties and seventies, when those places didn't necessarily go out of their way to cater to the needs or whims of Western students. You were expected to make the effort to keep up with them, not the other way around. That said, the people are very, very nice (as one would expect in a monastic environment), the practice traditional and quite rigorous, the food is good and simple and the accommodations spartan but comfortable enough. If I had to compare, going on retreat here isn't as fancy or comfortable as sitting retreats at the Spirit Rock or Big Bear Retreat Centers (which are very nice, but pricey). In some ways, it's akin to the retreats sponsored by Against the Stream, which are held at summer camps that had been re-purposed in the off-season. I'm very glad to have sat retreat here.

He's 95 years old this year and still very sharp. The compassion that he has for all beings really shows during the retreat. He worked really hard day in and day out answering all of our questions. Helping us with the meditation. All of the monks and nuns here are also very helpful. They're very kind with so much wisdom. I recommend this temple for anyone who want to learn meditation and Theravada Buddhism. Beautiful temple, very clean and peaceful here. I cannot wait to attend the next meditation class if they ever have another one this year.

(Tashi delek) is what I heard upon entering this temple, with kindness emanating from the Tibetan monks as well as the Chinese speaking docent of the temple. Services are often conducted in Tibetan, Mandarin, and English, and visitors such as myself are welcome to participate in the Buddhist religious practices, such as the mantra chanting. Buddhists of all ethnic backgrounds come here to be in community with their faith. On this occasion, Tibetans gathered to celebrate their New Year and generously allowed us to celebrate with them.

Instead of the familiar explanatory and full immersion approaches which American schools usually employ, Land of Compassion Buddha's monks pretty much use the most primitive way to teach a new language-recitation, memorization and repeated practices-in class! I basically don't do any revision at home, as I'm busy with other things; and they go over the new things like 30 or 50 times in class with us to make sure we do the work even if after class we don't study ourselves. I'm wondering if it's a monastic way of language learning as self-study may not take up as much time of a student's, at least when they are on elementary level. Just my guess. Venerable Thupten Jangchu is pretty awesome. I honestly don't remember learning like this after graduating from the kindergarten at six. He guarantees everyone in the whole class "gets it" before he moves on to something new so it becomes not only about learning but also practicing patience, which is sometimes even more important to a student. My class becomes something I look forward to through the week. Nothing is better than learning a new thing in a tranquil place filled with beautiful dharma (the teachings of the Buddha) tools and nice people. The accent/dialect Venerable Jangchu teaches is Khampa which is spoken in Eastern Tibet. If you need to learn another accent/dialect, you should ask in advance when you sign up. I think I paid about $200 for a boot camp lasting 1.5 months. The text book costs $15. A steal, right? Oh, no shoes in the center. There's tea for students. Just make sure you clean up after yourself. Volunteer to put the study trays and sitting cushion back to the storage after class. There are no chairs; we sit on the floor so I find pants more convenient than dresses or skirts. As for lunch, the mall with eateries, Starbucks, Westfield and Ikea is 5 minutes away.
