Whenever something old can be repurposed for the general public's use, it's usually considered a win-win. The granite quarry, in use for mining from the 1920's to 1970's, is one example. The park boasts ample parking, a climbing tower, play areas, and restrooms. You'll find paths leading to the Waghton Connector greenway which then connects to the Peachtree Greenway and nearby tennis courts. But the most outstanding feature is the bridge overlooking the quarry, high above the water. The views are pretty and on a clear day, you can see the Winston-Salem skyline above the trees in the distance. Found this hidden gem very close to Winston-Salem downtown and loved every but of it! We headed there on a chilly Sunday morning (would have been nicer ifnit was a bit warmer though) and were very impressed with what this place had to offer. They had ample amount of parking space, from there it was a short walk to the kids play area, the giant man made cliff at the edge of the quarry and what seemed to be vast hiking trails. The kids park was supposed to be closed for renovations, but people were enjoying it nonetheless with the sign thrown to the side. The cliff was really nice too, you get a glimpse of the downtown skyline, the clean water filled in the quarry alongwith the giant flower (curious to know the purpose of that)! We walked around a bit and it was great place to fly a drone as well if you have it. Its a great place spend your weekend morning or evening and hangout. read more

Few things scare me, but heights and deep water definitely do. My wife and I had experienced most of Winston Salem, so I decided to stop by here because it looked cool. I'm very glad we did. It's absolutely beautiful and even though it's a deep water lake, and has a terrifyingly high observation deck, the views were stunning, especially with the tall buildings of Winston-Salem in the background. Although I had to walk out to the end, touching the railing the entire time, it was well worth it. I highly recommend this place, and will definitely return. There is a super cool playground area for children, and walking trails for adults. Definitely worth checking out if you're in the area. read more

While in a restaurant, my sister learned about this park. She got the details and set up a plan. We met for a picnic and a stroll. It was a Monday and 63 degrees. The picnic tables are in full sun, so it's great when the weather is a little cool and sunny but I think you'd fry in the summer. It wasn't crowded but the people that were there, were very friendly. The grounds are well maintained and there are nice paved paths. I took away one star because the paths aren't marked. As we walked around the quarry, we didn't know if it would circle back around or if we were on one of the connector greenways. Since we didn't know, we turned around. I took away another star because they don't seem to have any park employees on site. We witnessed something sketchy by someone on a moped. He was not in a park uniform and he was stopped and doing something at the quarry fence, toward the back side. We waved and passed by. When we turned around from our walk, he was getting back on his moped and he left the park. I don't know if there are cameras but I would feel safer if they had maintenance crews or security going around on foot or golf carts. read more

Great park for kids ages 7+. Perhaps not the best place for little ones, but a nice place. Great picnic area under the pavilion. They say it's the best sunset in the city, not sure but will go back to see it in the future. read more

What a unique place to visit and so picturesque. The only issue was they were doing construction so it took away a bit from it. The overlook was cool and people put locks on the fencing like the Pont des Arts bridge in Paris. The area that surrounded the park we full of trees changing colors and you could see the city skyline in the distance. Definitely come here if you visit. read more

I went on New Year's Day for the first time. It was a unseasonably warm day and I enjoyed walking around and seeing the quarry with my dogs. There is a lot of construction being done currently so it wasn't the easiest to navigate. We started down a paved path but wasn't sure how far or where all it went so we didn't go far. I went mostly for the quarry view and it was really nice. It's a shame that graffiti is in various places and there was broken glass upon entering the walkway for the overlook. The locks people put on the railings are really tacky. None of this is the parks fault, hopefully more security and maintenance will happen once construction is done. read more

We were looking for something to do on a Monday in Winston-Salem when a lot of other places were closed. I had read about the quarry so we drove over to take a look. It's definitely unique, with great geological samples and even a view of downtown. We hiked on some of the trails around part of the lake and checked out some features like their butterfly garden. It was pretty empty on the day we visited (just a few other visitors) and I wonder if this place is as known as it should be. Definitely a unique attraction. read more

What an incredible park! I visited for the first time last night and was so impressed with how gorgeous this setting is. If you're looking for a place to spread out a blanket and picnic with the family, toss around a frisbee or fly a kite, they have that space in abundance. You can teach your kids to ride a bike on all of the wide concrete paths. If you want to walk on wooded trails, you can do that too. Feeling romantic and want to take in incredible views? The observation pier is perfect for watching the sun set over the quarry. Seriously, this place is so cool and I can't wait to return. read more

They are doing some construction to add a water feature, but there are picnic tables, a beautiful view of the quarry along with some information about quarries in North Carolina and of course the bridge overlook that shows the entire skyline!! A nice little in-town get away that doesn't require a lot of driving. Anyone with an interest in geology (commercial) and rock hounding would probably find this an especially interesting site. Be forewarned though there's not a lot of shade and this could make it a bit uncomfortable in the heat of the day on the warmest days in summer. All in all though a most unique use of land and near the heart of a city. read more

I really hate that park officials are allowing the locks to be placed on the fencing. It looks so tacky and cheap and ruins the views. This isn't Europe, and I hate that people are trying to carry on that tradition here. And, the surroundings and general area where the park is located is really sketchy. so definitely don't feel safe going alone. I think visiting once was enough for me. Won't be back. read more

The first few times I came here it was pretty neat. Took some pictures of downtown, walked around. That was a few years ago. I visited again recently and nothing has changed. Maybe an extended walkway, but that's it. I hope they manage to make this more of a park because there's nothing for kids to do and after you've seen it once or twice, there's really no point seeing it again. read more

On our trip to NC we looked for gems like this - parks with excellent landscaping, some nice paths to walk, and a little character and history (the park used to be a functional quarry). So yesterday afternoon, my son and I found this gem. It was absolutely breathtaking to me! The feeling when you are walking around it and in the area.... I promise was like sooooo fang soothing and peaceful! * * They have what you call "Rocking the Park" there sometimes... a Band and people bring lawn chairs and just enjoy the music and scenery. I loved it! Had I've known... We would have made sand inches and had a picnic here! Great setting to simply breathe and unwind!!!! * * So, the park's focal point is the overlook pier that extends over the eastern side of the quarry, you will see views of the deep blue waters of the old 'quarry' that gives the park its name. You see the city skyline in the distance. * Why is the park there? Well, the quarry was operated as Piedmont Quarry from the mid-1920s, until the early 1970s. When work stopped the quarry slowly filled with water, though high cliffs still remained. Vulcan Materials donated the land to the city in 1998. * If you traveling by foot/bike; you can also access getting to the park on the Waughtown Connector greenway, which runs to the Waughtown area on one end and the Peachtree Greenway on the other. * Like I said, it's absolutely PEACEFUL and BEAUUUUUUTIFUL! * The sound of small children running and playing, rolling down hills... The soft wind brushing against your face, and pure positive energy surrounding the tucked back gem.
