Our families stayed in the health center, lodge, and electrified cabins, while our friends embraced the adventure of summer cabins and tents. The venue offers so many stunning spaces, from the spacious dining hall for meals to the stage/amphitheater with fire pits--perfect for s'mores and late-night stories. We exchanged vows at the top of a hill near the outdoor pavilion, with a gorgeous backdrop of pine trees and a view of Big Bear Lake in the distance. We were able to offer our guests camp activities like archery and a pool day, as well as had room to setup other activities like craft tables and lawn games. The biggest perk was the complete freedom to choose our own vendors, allowing us to create a truly personalized experience (huge shoutout to Scratch Kitchen for catering--our guests still rave about the food). We spent a year making signs, collecting décor, buying solar lights, and crafting to transform this Girl Scout camp into a full-blown wedding festival. I arrived in Quartzsite on Thursday Jan 22nd. Friday was spent buying minerals and polished spheres…read moreat Tyson Wells, Gem World and other places. When I woke up on Saturday I was excited because I was heading to the Quartzsite QIA Gem & Mineral Pow-Wow to buy mineral specimens for our mineral collection for our geology department at Caltech. I arrived about 10 am and found a good parking spot on the street. One of our Caltech grad students told me about the Pow-Pow so I was hopeful I would find some good samples. With my dog Frankie in tow we ventured into the show. I spent a little over 2 hours walking around the whole show. There was fossils, brand new lapidary machines, opals, cool fossilized Megalodon teeth, hand made knives with blades that were made out of obsidian, turquoise, jade and gold for sale. While I was their I found a great mineral dealer where I bought 12 minerals for our collection. Most of the Yelp Pow-Wow reviews are talking about what they bought at Quartzsite in general not at the Pow-Pow. This years Pow-Wow was only for 5 days Jan 21-25 and next years will be Jan 20 thru 24, 2027. I look forward to coming to next years show.
