Apparently dentists don't like to accept medical insurance - only dental insurance. And when I pulled into Dr. Ruderman's office parking lot, I inwardly groaned. It's just not an attractive building, there's a dumpster in front of the building, and the concrete in the parking lot of cracked. The interior also looks like it hasn't been decorated in decades. BUT...! Dr. Ruderman was such a good doctor/dentist that I now understand the amazing reviews despite the dreary décor. It sounds silly writing this, but he actually read my medical chart, and asked me questions about it. We actually had rapport. Noticing my discomfort with the procedure, he joked around about my employer in the news and the terrible taste of the anesthesia. And when my medical results came in, Dr. Ruderman personally called me to inform me of the results (they were good) and explain what they meant. What a novel concept - I'm used to having to dial in myself and then listen to a prerecorded message. My only pang of sadness is that I live so far from Dr. Ruderman. If I lived closer, I would come to Dr. Ruderman for all my dental needs!

My only two gripes are the following: 1) I believe I filled out all the forms online before arriving, but those were somehow lost and I had to use their iPad to fill them out again. It took maybe 20 mins in total, and there's a lot of info to provide on your first visit. Maybe check on the online process to see what broke and why my info didn't come through? 2) I think someone may have called out sick that day on their staff, as it appeared that they were double booked throughout the AM. After being seated in the back, I had to wait 20-30 mins for a dental assistant to come back and do my cleaning. It was worth the wait as she did one of the best and most in-depth cleanings of my life, so please give her a raise! That being said, had I known ya'll were double booked in the AM, I might have come in a bit later than scheduled if I knew that morning of the pending delay. That being said, I'd say this place is most definitely where I'm going now that I live in the area. Hands down one of the best dentist offices I've ever been to!

They do not do well at supporting patients with sensory issues or dental anxiety, or conditions like TMJ that make dental visits difficult. With new patients they are kinder, but with every visit I have made they have become less supportive and less accommodating. My last cleaning was extremely unpleasant and I was shamed into not taking breaks over the course of multiple procedures and fittings even though holding my jaw open causes my TMJ to flare. Then there's the high-pressure upselling. For several years, the dentists and hygienists at this practice have been trying to get me to buy a dental-grade night guard out of pocket, even though I had an over-the-counter one I had been happy with. I finally agreed because they told me it would help my gums and that I would face severe consequences if I did not "make the investment." I had to pay $750 (!!!) out of pocket. When the night guard arrived, it was so bulky and uncomfortable that I could not get a good night's sleep in it and I woke in the morning with severe jaw pain on both sides of my jaw. I went back to have it adjusted and suddenly I was being told that having a night guard means sleeping with your mouth open and accepting dry mouth, that jaw pain often gets worse at first, and that I would have to accept some bad sleep in order to become accustomed to the night guard. I cannot stress enough that this was NOT disclosed to me prior to when I made the purchase. Since the practice knew about my sensory and dental anxiety issues, I feel strongly that they should have talked to me about what the night guard would be like before pushing me to buy it. When I explained the above, the practice offered me only a partial refund, which would mean that I spent hundreds of dollars on nothing. I feel my trust was taken advantage of and I would encourage others to look for a different practice.

I don't *think* I asked for my tooth, but it was really nice to wake up from the procedure to find it in a little package in my hands. Not everyone wants their teeth back, but I'm DEFINITELY the kind of person who does, so that was meaningful. Also, the office staff are very helpful and things run efficiently. Don't forget to take a check or use an alternative form of payment besides a credit card, as this helps them keep costs low.

Of course, there is always lingering pain with multiple tooth extractions, but they prescribed the appropriate antibiotics and high-dose Motrin to deal with it. Again, no one wants to get their wisdom teeth removed, but if you have to, this group of professionals are the ones to see.

My experience with this clinic made me seriously question the integrity of some medical providers. I grew up in a family full of medical providers, so I've always had a lot of respect for them. But being told they "can't read" my scan files and that I needed to pay $450 for another CBCT scan was shocking. I had already taken the scan at another oral surgery clinic that turned out to be out-of-network. That's why I looked for an in-network doctor and ended up here. Before my first appointment, they asked me to bring the scan files. I even asked if there was a specific format they needed because I work with image files and know compatibility can matter. They brushed it off and told me to just bring them. I arrived with the USB and waited almost an hour, only to be told they couldn't read files from USB and needed them on a CD. Sorry, but are we in 2005? They "kindly" offered to take a new scan for $250. I had taken the scan only a week earlier, so I refused. I had to reschedule and even bought a CD burner on Amazon because the original clinic didn't have one. Before my second appointment, I called again to ask about file formats and told them the other clinic had also emailed the files. I even asked if they could call the other clinic since both clinics use the same medical imaging software, which I found very odd. THEY NEVER CALLED THE OTHER CLINIC AND APPARENTLY NEVER CHECKED THE EMAIL. They just kept saying it should work if it's on a CD. So I returned with the CD. After all that effort, they STILL said they couldn't read the files. And now the price for a new scan was suddenly $450. When I got home, I downloaded a free medical imaging viewer and opened the files immediately with no issue. Yes, I -- someone with no experience opening this type of medical imaging format -- was able to open them. I ended up booking another oral surgeon down the street who simply allowed me to upload my existing scans. I still can't understand why this clinic handled things this way. It felt like they cared more about charging for another scan than actually helping patients. Also, thanks for delaying my treatment for weeks and for trying to make me take another X-ray only a few weeks after the first one.

She then asked to speak to the surgeon to see how it went and was told she was "too busy" to speak to her. Over the next couple days my wife had severe bruising on her neck and jaw and extreme pain. We have no idea what happened during the surgery to illicit this kind of bruising. She also developed bruising on her wrist, again no doctor would explain what happened during the procedure so no idea what happened there. Over all was a terrible experience and honestly scary.

He also went over the different options I had to choose from. I had a panoramic mouth X-ray while I was there and his staff is top notch too. The office is bright and comfortable. Well alas, the time arrived when these suckers needed to get evicted. While I've had sensations of gum tenderness from time to time over the years, it wasn't until last week when one shifted in such a way that made it difficult to eat or even open my mouth fully. Because I wasn't sure how quickly my condition could worsen, I hopped on Yelp to find a top rated oral surgeon (even if not within my insurance network.) Since my family is in Montgomery County and would be helping me with pick up and recooperation after surgery, I was also looking for somewhere not too far from them. After reading BCC Oral Surgery's reviews, I followed up with quick phone call where I peppered the receptionist with a ton of questions. Both times I called, the person that picked up phone was pleasant, patient and knowledgable. Plus, they had availability to perform the surgery the following week, where as the place my dentist referred was likely not to have an appointment for at least a month. So instead of giving myself too much time for me to build up my anxiety further, on Friday I booked for wisdom teeth removal surgery for that following Monday. The office sent me a new patient form to fill out online and was given instructions on how to best prep for my surgery in advance. On Monday morning, we gave ourselves plenty of time to get there with traffic and parking in mind. (There is a garage in the building but it fills up rather quickly.)Another bonus: There is a pharmacy in the building as well, so that is also something very helpful to know since that's where we ended up picking my prescriptions up from. Upon arriving, they had to take some additional x-rays since Dr. Patel was a bit concerned with how close one of my wisdom teeth was to a nerve. When he came in to meet with me, he was cool, calm, direct and explained to me any concerns and risks. He was confident without being arrogant or without bedside manner and quite frankly, his whole team also reflected that. The techs that took x-rays and administered the laughing gas were all so professional, sweet, funny and re-assuring. I was joking and laughing with them before the gas even hit me. Once I had a little laughing gas in my system, they then administered the general anesthesia and within seconds I was out like a light. ( I remember the doctor walking in and I said "What's up doc? Respectfully." Then I gave him he peace sign and I was a goner.) When I woke up, I was sitting comfortably in the recovery room. I had very little discomfort, aside from some grogginess and a mouth full of gauze. But I was very present and aware despite it all, and I believe from start to finish it all took between 45-60 minutes. After coordinating with my mom, they wheeled me down to where my mom would be pulling up with my car and I was on my way. Dr. Patel said that if I did feel pain, it would likely not be until later in the evening once the general anesthesia wore off, so I was ready to potentially experience some excruciating pain. But lucky for me, aside from swelling and some light bleeding the overall pain was minimal. I'm now 48 hours post surgery and I've been able to to keep any pain at bay with over the counter painkillers (and of course, prescribed antibiotics.) But aside from the swelling, this has been the most unexpectedly pleasant experience after getting four teeth pulled, two of which were impacted. Overall, I couldn't sing the praises of Dr. Patel and his team any further and am so glad that I found a total rockstar of a surgeon and team to make my wisdom teeth removal a top tier experience overall, with very minimal discomfort.
