This review reflects the perspective of a swing dancer. Swing dance happens at Queen Bee's on Tuesday evenings and consists of a lesson with a small dance party afterwards. The fee for the lesson and party is $15, for party only - $10. The announcement (https://www.queenbeessd.com/swign-dance) places the lesson at 6:30-7:30PM, the dance with DJ music is supposed to start at 7:30PM. On the day of my visit, the times were shifted by half an hour, so if you want to just dance, 8PM is the good time. The dance lesson by Mercedes Moore (yes, the great San Diego singer!) is excellent, most of the 20+ dancers appeared to be regulars and thus had accumulated significant amount of skill, yet due to small size of group, a true beginner should feel OK. Unlike most places in San Diego, this one has noticeably more leads (traditionally men) than follows (women), so this venue might be great for a true beginner follower. During the social party few more dancers appeared, but the group remained pretty small, and by 9PM it became hard to find a dance partner (the music was still going on). Some logistics: the free (street) parking is very limited. The best paid parking is across the street in a well-lit parking lot ($5 for two hours). The wooden floor is of OK quality, the seating is adequate for the small crowd. As always for small gatherings, bringing one's own dance partner is recommended, although on the day I have visited, it was easy for follows to find a lead. Overall: a true beginner follow should definitely check out this venue. An intermediate lead that wants just to dance, should consider bringing his own follower. read more

Queen Bee's definitely has character... and by character, I mean you can tell this place has been around for a minute. Came here for a wrestling event and the place was PACKED. No AC, shoulder-to-shoulder with everyone, and moving around felt like being in a battle royal before the matches even started. Parking...Well, it's North Park, so you already know that's part of the adventure. Expect to do a few laps and maybe say a quick prayer. That said, we made it happen and had a great time. I do not enjoy writing bad reviews, but when "Alma" a live representative of Queen Bee said I could be refunded within the 7 days time frame and perimeters, emails confirm, and the ticket program also confirmed- ONLY to find no refund, no help, no phone answer, and arguing with my bank, I must write a review. *I was so excited to attend the Beatle Fair, March 13 purchased a weekend motel and tickets for the event a few weeks prior. Only a week later March 18th, I called Queen Bee as I could no longer attend the whole weekend. Alma instructed me on how to submit for the refund which I did while she was on the phone with me. I waited, no refund. I called, emailed, called and emailed some more with screen shots of the EventBright refund request confirmation. **Still nothing. After a few more weeks, I called my bank for a formal dispute. I provide my bank the screenshots of emails to Queen Bee and EventBright confirmations. The bank initially refunded me. Yesteday, June 10th, I get a letter from my bank that notes they reversed the refund because Queen Bee said there is no reason for a refund (almost $300!) Queen Bee refuses to acknowledge the situation, still no phone answer and no reply to email. I did not attend and now I am out $300 because of their poor business practice. SHAME!!!! Nice venue that holds a lot of events. Came here for the first time for the 2025 san diego all women poetry slam and it was amazing. It's pretty spacious but depending on the type of event, it may fill up quickly. They also hold dance classes such as salsa, swing and country line dancing. Looks like a lot of fun and hope to check those out soon! Street parking available. read more

Throwing an event here is nearly impossible. I have attended/worked events here several times. One occasion, the owner day of went MIA leaving the staff of the event to fend for themselves. Provided non of the things promised. Other events Ive worked, there was little to no promotion on behalf on the venue to push sales, leaving for the venue to not pay their performers. Overall, a complete nightmare of a venue. Do not host events here, because you might not get paid. They should sell this place because the current state it's in is going to burry itself into the ground. read more

I'm writing this review for the Poets Underground Open Mic, where audience members and also those who perform on stage pay an entrance fee currently a $5 cover. Its mostly poets and some musicians like myself. The nice thing about the open mic is its not like a bar or food hall open mic where the audience is chatting and may or may not even listen, but at Queen Bees there an audience with chairs setup so everyone watches and listens and pays attention, then the hosts make positive commentary on each performance that really support those in front of the mic. What I don't like is that commentary can be long, and there are also headliners whose time in front of the mic can be long, which is all fine, however some artists who come to tell their stories or read their poetry or perform their music pay the entrance fee but don't get to perform. I think that's disrespectful to those who don't get to be in front of the microphone because hosts and headliners do not allow enough time for all performers. Please be aware its really difficult to get parking too, so if you drive there to perform and can eventually find a parking spot (could take well over an hour driving around) you're not guaranteed to perform - they take yoru money, you sign up and get a slot on the list, then at the end "i'm sorry we have a hard cutoff at 10pm". I've never received a reply to any email I sent to Queen Bees, but if you call you may get through. The hosts should allow anyone who signed up for the mic and paid and waited until the end to perform onstage again that's just common courtesy but cutting off those on the list is disrespectful. read more

Came here for a poetry slam, and had such a great evening! It had been a while since I had heard poetry, yet alone such honest...real..emotional words. The host was engaging, and funny and assisted with making the night enjoyable. The poets all were great. Since it was a competition only 1 would be crowned winner and get a chance to compete for the grand prize in March. the owner of this venue doesn't want to pay out the 50% ticketing split that was listed in our event contract and is continuing to ignore my messages and calls over a one month time span, perhaps I will finally hear from her after leaving this review. do not leave the venue without being paid!! I booked a concert at this venue on a short tour for indie musicians. I was told by the venue employee that Alma handles all the payouts from their eventbrite sales and to reach out to her after our show and she would handle it. I did so and never heard back so I started reaching out to this employee Seven who was responsive, they said they could set up a time for me to speak with Alma which never happened and I was also told several times she would be reaching out to me which has yet to happen and it's been a month of me trying to get in contact. Seven says she doesn't want to pay bc we didn't sell 50 tickets (we sold 46 $18 tickets) and I made a $250 deposit to secure the date. the 50 ticket minimum was never mentioned in the contract. Additionally, their eventbrite page did not work to purchase tickets on the day of show and did not get fixed after I brought that up which likely lead to less ticket sales. I also asked if they could sign me up for daily ticket sales emails via eventbrite and they refused, saying that they don't provide access to their eventbrite account (that's not at all what I was asking, I was asking for a simple automated email) they seemed to not understand my simple request and I was told no promoter had ever asked for that before. The sound person for our show showed up at doors time, which lead to us having to push doors 30 minutes while we had a line of people waiting outside. The venue itself was nice, had a large stage and large greenroom and the employee Seven that was working that day was very nice and helpful. The venue owes me at least $414 (from our ticket sales that went into their eventbrite account). I hope to get this resolved and be able to update this review with a positive resolution. read more

I was stood up by the owner/manager not once but twice. First time 30 minutes late I had to hear from a 3rd party they she (Alma) was in a Drs appointment that ran longer then she expected. Ok no worries. Second time she made a promise that it wouldn't happen again and low and behold she stood me up a second time and didn't even bother with a follow up call or anything. So called business people like this don't deserve our patronage. Icing on the cake I was trying to spend money with her!!! Don't do it! Service: The service is terrible here the owner is unethical and misleading. We booked this place for our baby shower because we were told a great price we couldn't pass up. I told them I was only part time and my boyfriend was a Marine so anyway we can save is beneficial to our family. However this place is a rip off make sure you keep copies of your initial contracts they will fork the price up on you like they did to us typical bait and switch move! I tried to ask her for a copy of the original receipt and contract I had she some how couldn't find it. They make you pay cash so they could report less to the IRS so typical of a shady business. I wish now that I read the "reviews not currently recommended" then it would have saved me the headache. I had my baby shower here in June 2017 and when I first met with them was told a stellar price for the front main ball room it was even written on the contract. The week of the event I get a call from Alma she says that the main room is no longer available and that I would need to move my party to the back room. Now mind you I already paid in full now for the price I was quoted and had already planned my entire decorations around it as well. I was beyond upset and stressed out, like come on I'm already pregnant now they wanted to tell me I lost the front room. I wanted to cancel the shower but people were coming from Texas, Vegas, LA, and the Bay Area so I couldn't also all the invites were sent out. I literally cried, she then called me back and said I could have the front room for $300 more. At that point I was literally yelling at her how is it that I would need to pay more she said she double booked an event that's why we lost the room so I would need to pay that so she can then pay the other parties cancellation fee. At that point I just wanted the main room so I paid it and decided I'd take legal action. I will be bringing this to small claims court I have been so busy with a new born we contacted BBB(Better Business Bureau) but they have not received a call back from them. Apparently they have had many complaints sent to BBB before but they can never get a hold of the owner. I'll will be reaching out to the local news at some point too so this won't happen to another person again. The Venue: It's somewhat "hipster" and eclectic, I lived in North Park it was down the street from my house in central location of the city. I would love to use this even space again but after being ripped off I can't go back. They had tables on site and since Alma the owner forced me to pay more she tried to compensate me with "free linens". The main room was literally a sweat box I feel terrible because all my guest were sweating and complaining of the heat. I told the manager to turn the ac up he said he did but it felt the even worst as the day progressed. read more

Pretty cool private venue located in the heart of North Park. You can rent out the entire space to hold your event. It has an art gallery feel. It's a large open room with a stage at the front- perfect for a DJ. There are a few restrooms on the side. Besides private events, I hear that this space also gets used for small concerts, shows, etc. read more

We went for an event on a Friday evening. Parking is a bit crazy in the area, we asked where the best place to park was and were told to park in the lot next to the venue since we were attending the event. We were also warned not to park in the restaurant/lot to the left because they charge $5/hour for parking. Sort of bummed when we came out to our car after the event and found a ticket on our window. Maybe street parking if available is the best however being a Friday night parking was sparce. Queen Bee's itself is an event space that has live music, salsa dancing and event holds private events like parties and weddings. We went to see some live music and the sound was pretty good. Queen Bee's has a nice sized stage for the bands and plenty of open space to dance (or in our case grab a chair and sit in the back and listen). Back of the venue was separated out that evening for another event so the total space is fairly large. There is no food or beverage sold onsite so make sure you bring your own water or soda. Have not seen how the space is set-up for a party or a wedding but it is a great space for some live music. read more

A fun place to dance salsa, bachata and zouk on Sundays. I have been to the other lessons but I'm sure they're awesome! Sometimes they will have performances for different dance teams. Maybe it was personal experience, but the salsa instructor in the classes we took was using super misogynistic language and made all the women in our group uncomfortable, not to mention the weird, borderline pervy men you were meant to dance with if you swapped around the circle. I give Quien Bees 0 Stars. I had booked Queen Bees for my daughter's sweet 16 and my son's graduation party. They double booked and ended up moving my son's date which was one week apart from my daughter's so I told them I would just combine the parties. I contracted the Hall, photo booth and DJ. We were also told to send a play list & on the day, the DJ would be on the stage. It was also documented that the Hall would be ready and tables all set up for decorations by noon on the day of event. Well, I swear, they did not read their own contract they drew up. I got there at 1, Doors were locked, and I had to call. By 1:20, doors were unlocked, NOTHING was set up. Then they set up the tables but now had to pick up the linens. This pushed me back setting up. By the time I was done, it was time to pick up food. Guests were to arrive at 6, I got there 6:05- NO DJ... I asked Where's the DJ, she said I did not request one. I told her it's in the contract. She got one by 6:30 playing music not on play list- a lot of explicit songs. When I referred to playlist, she said there were no clean versions- she lied. Some songs were 90's, and they all had clean versions- and NO DJ on stage.... just her family in the back of the room NO PHOTO BOOTH. She said she would reimburse 1/2 the amount, and have someone take pictures and email them that coming Monday. I had to not only beg for the money, but also the pictures. The pictures we finally got over 2 weeks later, and the money I had to write several emails for. BAD BUSINESS PRACTICES!!!! DOES NOT READ THEIR OWN CONTRACTS... My daughter has been wanting to take dance lessons and we happen to have walked by and decided to peek in. The lady inside told me that they just started to offer dance lessons for kids ages 4-12 on Mondays and Wednesdays at 6p. It's Zumba based but they concentrate on movement, coordination and exercise and the instructor, Isabel, is really good with kids. Classes are $7 each or if you pay monthly, it drops to $5 per class...and I would get a discount if I wanted to join the adult Zumba class going on at the same time in the bigger ballroom. My daughter tried it on Monday and had a blast. Since she was the only student in class that day, she basically had private lessons from Isabel and her first class was FREE. Isabel says Wednesdays are more popular because 6p seems to be a better time for parents to bring their kids than the 530p class on Monday...she's going to change it to 6p for both days. We came again on Wednesday and the adult Zumba class was definitely popping but there was only 2 kids for my daughter's class. I guess they still need to get the word out about the Kids Zumba classes. Well, I think we'll stick with it for a little while...Isabel is really nice and great with my daughter. The studio is close to home, worth the $5 a class, and most importantly, my daughter's having fun! read more

I wish I could snap but I can definitely clap! I came here on Monday for their once a month Poetry Slam (held on the 2nd Monday of each month). I was scared because I arrived at 750p & the line was crazy long! Surprisingly, I believe they let everyone inside because all of the chairs were filled, people were standing, & they allowed people to sit on the stage. Lol, it was definitely a fire hazard but for a fun night, who cares! Dress light because with all those bodies in a single room... you will be sweating up a storm! There is a paid parking lot nearby for $5. Entrance is $5. The show is from 8p-11p. There is 2 sacrificial poets to get the evening going. 5 random judges to score each poet, the audience can either applaud or boo the scores. Then 2 brackets of 7 poets each. We were treated to an amazing guest poet, Ikon, who blew the audience away with several amazing pieces! All of the poets were phenomenal, speaking about their lives, current events that affected them, & giving us all an insight on who they are. Beautiful. read more

This was a really awesome place to plan a private party! I planned a Speakeasy Surprise birthday party for my super husband Steve T. I rented the back room which comes with a large outdoor patio area. It was reasonably priced and easy to decorate, as the back entrance allows you to unload your car right there. The back room looks really beautiful and has a huge mural of New York! When we decked it out, it looked simply amazing! My favorite things about Queen Bee's are the super friendly staff and the laissez-faire attitude...not anal at all and let you throw your party the way you want it. A couple of the guys were there during the day and helped us out with the unloading and decorations, despite the fact that was not part of their job. The reasons I leave my review at four stars is because I had booked the room four months in advance and some of the details that I had discussed with the director were forgotten or seemed to change over time, and depending who I spoke to....but everything worked out in the end. Also, there is no kitchen, so it is important to do either very simple food, or have the caterers do everything (I chose the latter). Prior to my private party, I had been to Queen Bee's for an amazing Yelp Elite party, a comedy open mic night, and a Mental Health Week event...all of which were great! read more

My guests enjoyed how spacious the venue is and that it is centrally located. It was a very reasonable cost for a venue for our fundraiser and I didn't have to worry about tables and chairs! Last Friday night I went to attend the Bits and Pieces show, the benefit children with disabilities. I don't think of any other venue when you can have reunited many of the best graffiti artists of San Diego under the same roof! Very original concept of painting in canvases the full paint, and then selling those canvases in units, so each person will get a piece of the 'wall'. The vibe you get is alternative, artistic and creative. Snobs don't have a place at vibrant Queen Bee. Difficult to park as is many centric places of North Park. read more

This is a sweet spot. Get it? Honey is sweet and bees make it. Corny joke I know. I came here for the Cosplay Circus, it wasn't that big of an event. It's really cool that this place is bigger than it looks. The sound system is pretty good. At the Coldplay Circus which was also a concert, Velveteen Band (Which the singer is a puppet, also known as a ventriloquist) and Lolita Dark played (which is a Jpop band, maybe closer to a Jrock band). The coolest costume was the chewbacca costume (That one wasn't in the contest, because the owner wore it). The DJ was cool, they played some video game techno music. read more

A special event starring Pete Best the pre Ringo, drummer of the Beatles and his brother Roag Best. The Queen Bee's has annually hosted a Beatles Fest event and this year we made sure that we attended. Many of the local bands perform their musical renderings and vendors of Beatles memorabilia want you to add trinkets and shirts to your collection. The Queen Bee's location in North Park area of San Diego is easy to find, but the parking could definitely be challenging for events that draw a big attendance. The Queen Bee has been transformed into a clean and fun Cultural Center from earlier days, and the theatre area was pleasant and adequate and orderly seating. We liked the artsy decor that fit this event and were in awe of Pete Best drumming styles. He was bestowed a special honor by the San Diego city council and we know that many people must receive credit for this. Carmen for being a huge Beatles fan and Alma Rodriguez for founding the new Queen Bee venue. It's now a very nice place for all sorts of events, find their website for currently scheduled art and music happenings. Could not miss this opportunity to go to this annual grass roots Beatle fair in San Diego. 2 day event with live bands, panel discussions, plenty of vendors selling so much Beatle memorabilia. My son even met the original Beatle Pete Best and got his autograph. The venue was small and intimate, but it was a packed house. Next year they'll need a bigger venue with seating for everyone. I rented this venue for my daughter's graduation party on Saturday, June 16, 2018. It was somewhat of a delight and my guests did enjoy themselves for the most part. However, there were a multitude of concerns that I had expressed to the owner, Alma: My event was scheduled to be from 5:00pm - 11:30pm. Once she left the studio for whatever reason she needed to, her employees disappeared shortly thereafter, and did not finish setting up the tables and chairs. My family and I had to complete the task ourselves. The food did not arrive until 6:27pm and was not available to be served until 6:49pm! I asked multiple employees on 4 different occasions about the time the food would be ready to serve, was told "they went to pick it up now," "I'm not sure." I then followed up stating my event was supposed to start at 5:00pm and was responded with "I did not get those details." At one point I was told, "I'm just here to monitor the buffet line." Okay so WHERE IS THE FOOD?! With the food delivery & set up being delayed 2 hours, it screwed up the agenda and timeline of my event tremendously! Not to mention, having my guests wait 2 hours after my event was supposed to have started to eat is unacceptable! On another note, it did not seem as if there was enough food catered for 200 people. There were approximately a maximum of 120 guests that showed up to my event, but the food did not last past the first wave of guests. When I was coming up to the buffet station at around 7:30pm, the buffet line was already gone and cleaned up. Not good! Also, one of my guests provided 3 bowls of guacamole. Only 2 bowls made it to the table! Where did the 3rd bowl go? She told us she handed it to one of her employees, but I promise you that bowl never made it to the buffet table! Employees did not willingly supply a trash bin. I had to request for one and was given attitude about it and was told "they are in the back." About 30 minutes later, I asked another employee for a trash bin and received attitude as well, as if him having to go look for one to provide was an inconvenience. About an hour later, the security guard (really nice guy) finally provided a small one on his own accord. The photo booth was not operational until 7pm. I would've assumed that it should've been up and running since the start of the event. That may have allowed people to kill time while waiting for the food to arrive rather than just sitting at the tables being bored and hungry. (Some of my guests went next door to buy deli sandwiches to hold themselves over. That is extremely embarrassing for me!) I was told by Alma that, included in the event package I paid for, there would be a parking lot attendant. This was non-existent. No one ever showed up to attend to the parking lot. My cousin (who traveled from Texas to attend my event) was the person who stayed outside to tend to it by way of moving cones to direct guests into the parking lot. Approximately 10:15pm, the employees started cleaning up, throwing away my guests' plates of food and drinks in the trash, and moving personal belongings to breakdown the tables and chairs. (We were still in party mode during this time as my event was scheduled to end at 11:30pm.) My guests took this as a signal that my event has ended and proceeded to leave. Also, unacceptable! Additionally, the employees were very unprofessional!!! They did not seem happy to have been there. A couple of employees complained about my event being the 3rd graduation party they "had to deal with in the past 3 days." At another point, a few of my family members as well as myself were getting attitude from the employees and acted as if they had something better to do. Also, employees were found to be on the roof smoking weed. (Although it may be legal in California now, it is highly unprofessional to be doing so during a paid event where professionalism should come as a standard practice.) Employees were drinking the alcohol we provided for our guests (and were drunk) throughout my event. It was unrecognizable to anyone that they were actual employees as they appeared and acted as if they were a part of the invited crowd. Employees were blatantly eating the food I paid for that were to be for the guests in front of the buffet station! No shame! The bartender did not show up until 6:30pm and was upset about how the bar was set up and how everything wasn't in its proper place. She expressed her issues loudly in front of my guests. She was also upset that people were trying to make their own drinks while she was trying to set up the bar. Not once did we feel as if our patronage was valued. Customer service was severely lacking throughout my event. A lot of my guests had complaints about the service and are willing to make testimonies to that effect! Alma's response to my formal letter of complaint was atrocious, she just did not care. Out of all the events I have hosted in other venues, this is by far the worst experience I have had. read more

This is a review of Rosie's Zumba classes at Queen Bee's. I would give Rosie 10 stars if I could! She is by far one of the best dance teachers I've ever encountered. This woman is a tiny ball of spitfire energy. Her classes are SO much fun. You will laugh, you will sweat, you will think your feet can't move any faster but you won't want to stop. Rosie puts on the music and doesn't stop moving for an hour - no interruptions, no explaining moves. But all levels will feel welcome. There is no judging here. She mixes traditional Latin Zumba music with hip hop and oldies. No mirror - LOVE. Dark with club lights - so you literally feel like you are just dancing at a club in the middle of a Saturday. My wife and I held our wedding reception at Queen Bee's in April 2014. A bit of an unusual choice, but we are young adults on a budget and more interested in fun and good company than fancy. We were looking for a venue which, ahem: -would allow us to purchase and bring in our own alcohol. We knew we needed a decent amount of social lubricant, and did not want to pay the ridiculous prices that so many wedding venues get away with charging. -would allow us to have a photobooth (my demand). -might have a space where we could have a fire pit for s'mores (my wife's dream) -would let us bring in our own desserts since we wanted both tiny cheesecake bites (my favorite) and ice cream cake (wife's favorite) These were the criteria, and Queen Bee's fit the bill. Pros: -QB's met all of our aforementioned criteria. We had the option to use their services or bring in our own vendors. They required that we provide our own alcohol, which was great! -They were flexible with the space and let us show our personality in our decisions in how the space was used. It's a unique and fun space and we tried to capitalize on that: we took pictures in front of the mural, in front of their painted walls, and across the street with the crazy cat mural. We had the front great room with tables and a dance floor, the middle, mirrored room with a photo booth and bar, and we used the back patio for s'mores and cigars. -I was excited to support a local business that seemed to have a positive reputation in the community. -They are certainly more affordable than most other venues. Hotels are nuts. Our initial quote was around $5500, but since we didn't use their photographer, florist, or baker, I think we got out for less. -Jeff was a super hard worker, and he did all he could to help us achieve our visions for the space. Thanks, Jeff! Cons: -There was a last minute reschedule for our food tasting, in spite of the fact that I had been trying to confirm it for a couple of days. Turns out Alma was sick, which is understandable, but shouldn't someone else be checking voicemail and email in that instance? -Overall, their communication was hit and miss. In the few weeks leading up to the wedding, when stress was at its pinnacle, we did not receive timely responses to our calls or emails. It felt like we had to hound them to get a response. -The food was just ok. The mushrooms that were great at the tasting were cold during the reception. On the flip side, our sirloin steak at the tasting was awful, so we upgraded to the filet mignon. We weren't able to do a taste test, but knew it had to be better than the fatty piece of gristle we had tried. The filets turned out quite well. They gave it a good try, but if I had to do it over, I would have had someone else cater it or brought in a food truck instead. -We had arranged to leave the remainder of our ice cream cake in their freezer overnight and pick it up the next day. It was our main dessert- the pretty one that was displayed - and we wanted to save a portion of it for our anniversary. Plus, there was a decent amount that remained and I will not let ice cream cake go to waste! Anywho, in the shuffle at the end of the night, the freezer it was stored in was moved and left unplugged. You can imagine what we picked up the next day. Ice cream puddle cake. We got an apology, but does that really cut it? -Bartenders were an included service, but they were novices at best. To be fair, we were forewarned that they were not professionals. We gave them a recipe to follow, but upon tasting my first mule of the night, I knew something was wrong. Turns out they had removed the flow restrictor from the bitters and were free pouring them into cocktails. They also added bitters to my sister's Jack and Coke? Strange stuff. We gave them feedback, and they were gracious and adjusted well. My recommendation: If you are serving beer and wine, feel free to use their staff. If you have an event with mildly complicated cocktails, bring in a trained bartender. For the record, we did not have our ceremony here, just the reception.
