Who knew this library has a large kids room with baby toys, coloring, little tables, a touch screen computer with learning software, audio books, and hand puppets. Plus they have weekly free classes for kids which were better than the classes I used to pay for elsewhere. My kids had a blast here. This will be my new hangout spot. I suppose a public place like this attracts all the crowds but this one seems to be a beacon for the unruly. As much as I hate to admit it, I do come here quite a bit to get some monthly reading and occasional writing done. Parking is on the street, so it can be pretty tight since it's near the commercial center of Rockaway Park. If your lucky you'll find some residential street parking or if you are come via train, its the next block over. The staff are alright. I've had minimal interaction and it has usually been hassle-free, so no complaints there. They have a nice little collection of fiction reads and advertisement for local Queens Library Programs on display. The space is small but for the most part clean. They have about half a dozen computers for public use, with the standard 30 minute session. Depending on what time of the day, you will have to wait for usage and it's like the Hunger Games if you go in the evening. I've met all sorts of characters shouting obscenities or ones that just straight up mean mug you. My trips here are brief. Overall, if I don't have to go here I won't, I rather go to the one at Broad Channel for a more peaceful environment.

The only con that I have with this library is that they don't really have that many tables with outlets. There were just two tables with chairs and a power station in the middle of the table. Limited seating in the adults section on the first floor. It's not really a large library. The children's area has neat, colorful tables for children to sit. There were many computer stations but you have to reserve them before using them. There are garbage cans in certain sections for anyone who needs to throw garbage. Borrowing books is easy as long as you have a NYPL card that you can sign up for and get in a few minutes. You can place holds or reserve books and movies that are being borrowed and checked out of the library. Going to come here more often now that I found out about this location being close to the Brookfield mall.

Cardholders can check out digital books online these days. Rarely have I been disappointed when I'm looking for a particular book. If I can't find what I'm looking for I go to a branch like this one when I'm in the neighborhood. The employees are usually helpful. Since this branch is close to my doctors offices I may stop in and pick up something to read. I recommend wherever you live that you support your public library.

I used to love to walk to this NYC public library branch years ago when I was a student at NYU. At…read morethe time, the vibe was COMPLETELY different from the big and overwhelming NYU Bobst library. Years later the vibe in this neighborhood, all around this library branch has so completely changed. I was walking through Tompkins Square Park recently with a small group and we were all looking for a bathroom when I suggested the library! It was so strange walking back in after, I don't know, about 30 years!! The building is still small and cozy and well-maintained. The top floor is still a lovely and fun children's floor with story times, play areas, and lots of books! The other two floors are filled with adults, it was a bit difficult to find a place to sit, but we did and we were so delighted to grab a periodical and rest and read for a while.

They have a fantastic children's floor with a dedicated area for teens AND a dedicated area for babies and a very comprehensive children's book selection. I haven't been to any events for adult patrons but they seem to have many. My major complaint is that the library is not accessible. There is an elevator once you get to the first floor and a lift from the ground floor to the first. However, only wheelchairs are allowed on the lift. I've seen many caregivers with strollers, older people with carts, and people with walkers, struggling to navigate the stairs. I'm sure this is a logistical challenge given the age of the building but I hope they find a better solution before someone gets hurt or stops visiting the library due to inaccessibility.

It might not be the largest branch, or have the biggest collection of books, but what it lacks in size, it more than makes up for in charm and functionality. The staff is friendly and helpful. Special thanks to Librarian Emil that shared history, information about the art gallery, as well as assisting me with finding rare books. All of the librarians are welcoming and always ready to assist with finding books or helping with computers. The library is well-maintained and has a pleasant, cozy atmosphere, especially with the natural light from the large windows. It is a great spot to get work done or relax with a book. The physical collection might be curated, but books can be requested from other branches and delivered, which is a perk of the NYPL system. Programs and events are offered for children and adults that are shared on the bulletin board as you enter the library. There is also a dedicated children's area. Hudson Park Library is worth a visit if you are looking for a peaceful and well-run neighborhood library with a welcoming vibe. For those of you that enjoy history. This is the history of Hudson park library. Hudson park library opened in 1906. This location is one of Manhattan's twenty remaining Carnegie libraries. The library's benefactor was Andrew Carnegie, a Scottish-American businessman. In 1901, Carnegie sold his steel company, Carnegie Steel, to J.P. Morgan for $480 Million. He began using his tremendous profits from the business sale to contribute to civic philanthropy, eventually giving away nearly 90% of his fortune. One civic contribution he is best known for is the Carnegie libraries which he constructed worldwide, first starting in Dunfermline, Scotland, his birthplace. He then constructed libraries across the U.K., Ireland, Canada, and the United States. In New York City alone, he funded 65 libraries, 53 of which still exist today: 17 in Brooklyn, 20 in Manhattan, 8 in the Bronx, 4 in Staten Island, and 4 in Queens (Village Preservation) Carnegie often chose places to construct a library based on a personal connection, such as Braddock, Pennsylvania, where the Carnegie Steel mills had been located, he chose other locations based on an evaluation. Before Carnegie would construct a library, he used a formula he established to determine the need and viability of a library in a particular town. First, the town or area was required  to "demonstrate a need for a library." The town receiving the library was obligated to donate the land required to construct the building. And the town had to "annually provide 10 percent of the cost of the library's construction to support its operation." Though this formula was used for library construction for all civic donations, pools, churches, parks, and universities, he felt the best place to donate was to an area willing and able to help themselves. He believed that municipal funding powered by civic engagement was better than wealthy benefactors funding these public spaces as he feared "cliques" being formed amongst the wealthy and excluding those who needed these resources.  The New York Public Library had only recently been incorporated through the Astor, Tilden, and Lenox libraries in 1895, and construction of the library began in 1902. Before this, libraries were typically small, private, and held within other buildings preventing them from becoming the linchpin of a neighborhood. And the Hudson Park Library, completed in 1906. From its early days, the library served the community of Greenwich Village in many ways. It contained an auditorium, which allowed the library to serve as a lecture hall for the community. The library was also home to a reading group for young boys, the Societa di Mutuo Beneficio fra le Donne Italiane" (the Mutual Benefit Society of Italian Women), and a mothers club. Marianne Moore, the poet, worked as an assistant in this library from 1921 to 1925. In 2010, the Hudson Park Library gained landmark protections as part of the Greenwich Village Historic District Extension II proposed and advocated for by Village Preservation. This library, which sits overlooking the James J. Walker Park, is an example of the kind of philanthropy that made our city great at the turn of the century. This location features ~10 desktop computers in case you want to use any tech resources. Staff is always very helpful and polite. They always greet me with a smile on their face and politely answer any questions I have had. Everybody abides by covid 19 safety measures and wears masks which makes it a great and safe visit to the library for people of all ages!

Queens Library- Broad Channel Branch hones a small circular building that serves the island…read more Quaint, small, but cozy and more than a neighborhood local library. There is an excellent children and teenage book selection along with the standard free internet stations are ample for library patrons. Staff is very friendly and welcoming for the island's hospitality. It sits visible on the major road, Cross Bay Boulevard and easily accessible by the Q21, Q52, or Q53 buses as I've seen it many times en route to my high school in the Rockaway Peninsula. This is my very first visit inside and I'm happy for a jewel find. The building's circular but small structure piqued my interest, amid it's real far distance from mainland Queens, but the quiet atmosphere calls for finding time to sit and read in seclusion away from the world. The one thing I value besides the books is the kiddie area. It's is phenomenal and Jay is amazing as well. Jay keeps it clean and organize. Jay plays with the kids and he has value conversations with them as well. Jay does a baby group which I go to with my 15 month old daughter she loves it. At baby group Jay does songs, music and art time before the library is open to the public on Thursdays. (That's jay in the blue shirt) I enjoy the library and all jay does for the kids.

The crowd is exactly the same as it's at any free venue with seats and restrooms though I saw some students with laptops. A quick glance - overall the selection is pretty scarce. But thanks to one of those travel guides (there's a whole shelf) my vacation trip was very enjoyable.
