Until we saw our own dog behave well for Joe, we did not truly understand what a wonderful dog she was. Taking Junie to train with Joe was a great decision. Junie had experienced failed adoptions and, as a terrier, needed to learn to manage her emotions and energy. Junie trained with Joe for two weeks. She is much calmer and happier. Joe spent time with us, and we felt we left with tools to continue training and enjoying our lives with Junie. He remains available for questions and support. We will be back for boarding. We brought our dog Maddy for a stay with Joe while we were in the area exploring Yellowstone, and we were so glad we did! Joe was friendly and accommodating of our dog's needs, and very reassuring that she would get the care she needed while we were away. We haven't boarded our dog before this instance, and we wanted the experience to be a good one. His background as a trainer and the amazing property that the kennel is on sold us that this was the right place for us (in addition to these reviews). Maddy got plenty of exercise on the property, and got treated to a big raw beef bone during her stay. The kennels were outdoors with an attached doghouse, with a common space for dogs to play together. When we returned, she was happy and well rested! This has to be the best kennel I have ever put my dogs in. We came from California to stay in Yellowstone, but Yellowstone is not really dog friendly. I found this kennel and many others, but this happens to exceed all my expectations. The dogs get to roam on over 15 acres, play together, eat together, and have all the toys they could ever want. To top it off, both of the owners have over 15 years of experience under their belts training dogs. I couldn't have asked for more. My dogs loved it, and had the best time of their lives running free on a gorgeous farm. read more

Joe is the real deal! His training has taken our new pup from borderline obnoxious to an absolute delight! Yes he uses collars, both for positive reinforcement and negative deterrents. He lets the dog know who's boss. I had no idea that our pup thought she was our boss. Joe ended that immediately and the training went smoothly after that. It's so interesting to watch him work with dogs. He truly understands them & how they learn. Which makes him a very effective trainer. I have heard a small number of people in town say,"Joes too rough on dogs. He shouldnt use the collars". Well guess what. They're not dog trainers & they come to him for a reason,(because their efforts are ineffective). I guarantee he's NO WHERE NEAR as rough actual alpha dog and much more effective. We stayed at the lodge overnight, and then boarded our dog the next night when we went to Yellowstone park. Both experiences were excellent. The lodge is comfortable with well-decorated rooms, and a nice living room and kitchen. The dog boarding was great as well - Joe is also a knowledgeable dog trainer and nice guy, and our lab had a ball running around on 10+ acres with his other dogs (with the GPS tracking collar data to prove it!), and even getting a chance to swim in the Yellowstone River (his swimming skills have much improved since ;) Overall highly recommended if you have a dog with you want want to see the most Yellowstone has to offer. read more

We looked at many doggie daycare facilities in Bozeman and Livingston area that could board our two dogs for a week. We had a young puppy to consider. After visiting them we realized it would not be a peaceful option for them or for us, and the amount of dogs was simply overwhelming! We went to Querencia Kennels in Paradise Valley and met with Joe. As a trainer, Joe is very knowledgeable about dogs, and he is also patient and compassionate. He understands the minds and needs of dogs and we saw that in the way our labradoodles responded to him and their setting. He has set up a very large outdoor area for the dogs he cares for, and he lives in a very nice home on his acreage property. The dogs each have their own good size kennel space with igloo, and a huge (controlled) group play area. He made sure he selected the right group of dogs to bring on a nice long pack walk with him to the river on his property, and he sent us pictures of our dogs socializing and enjoying the walk with him and the other dogs. Our young Doodle (9 wks) and our older doodle stayed together in the kennel and they were calm and happy campers when we picked them up! Typically pampered, we think our pups enjoyed just the right amount of care being dogs. We highly recommend boarding and/or training with Joe at Querencia Kennels! read more

We were apprehensive about leaving our 6 month old McNab puppy, Nellie, at a kennel for the first time, but we were delighted with Joe's knowledge, experience and compassion. He takes his job seriously and did a great job with some basic obedience training for our puppy. The physical set-up of the kennel is great with outdoor playing areas, two ponds and the river front.. Joe and his team were great! We found Querencia when looking for a place to board our dog for a few days while we explored Yellowstone. He was super accommodating in arranging drop-off/pickup times and sent me photo updates of how my pup was doing during his stay. My dog came back happy, tired and well taken care of. On top of taking care of my pup, Joe was super friendly - showed us around the lodge, the property, and gave great recommendations on camping spots and other things to do in the area. Joe took great care of our border collie for a couple of days while we explored Yellowstone. Malcolm (our BC) needs a lot of exercise and play, and I believe he got it. Personal attention, along with acres to play in, including pond and stream, really made this the best choice for our active dog. People need to know how their dogs are being treated at Querencia Kennels. I gave them one star because I can't give fewer, but my dog is safe, and maybe that's worth one star. I also paid them, which I shouldn't have, but I didn't want to get into an argument right then, and I wanted to digest what had happened. I called Joe on April 23 to see if he could take my dog, Molly, for the day of the 25th. He said he was in Washington but to call Mike, who had some of the dogs "on the truck, right now." I didn't know what he meant, but envisioned that they lived on a ranch and some of the dogs were on the ranch truck. I called Mike, and when I was ready to take Molly to the "kennel" on the 25th, I called from Livingston. He said he would meet us at what turned out to be the house and so-called "kennels." Mike drove in ahead of us in what I would call a "dog truck." He put Molly in one of the dog-sized, mailbox-type metal boxes on the truck. He said he had to go back to his friend's place for a little while, but would be back shortly. He pointed out the "kennels," which didn't amount to a whole lot, as well as an area where he said the dogs could run and play. I thought as long as he was coming back shortly, she would be okay on the truck for a little while. He did let one of the dogs out to run around. It was a black lab and I assumed it was his dog. We were ready to pick up Molly earlier than planned. I called Mike and waited near the house. When the truck pulled in, he got Molly out of one of the metal boxes. According to Mike, Molly had been on the truck all day, along with the other dogs. He said he had her out only for about 20 minutes to walk her around. We had arrived at 9:20 a.m. and returned at 2:40 p.m. If what he said was true (and I'm not so sure she was out at all), she was on the truck a total of five (5) hours. She was never in the kennel and probably hadn't seen the other dogs that were on the truck. She was agitated and distraught. When I asked if she'd had water, he scurried to run some water into a bucket. He said he'd tried to give her water ONCE during the day, but that she wouldn't drink. That means she had gone nearly 5 1/2 hours without water and had not had water readily available when she needed it. She wouldn't drink this time either. It was over two hours later before she calmed down enough to be able to drink, and then I thought she would drink the well dry! I was not expecting doggy daycare, but I did expect that she would have decent shelter, fresh water, fresh air, and be able to walk around. I have never seen a respectable kennel that didn't offer that much. I wondered if I was overreacting, but other people I have told about this have been livid. I have watched dogs for several people over the years, most recently in January. If I had told those people that I would take care of their dog but that it would be kept in a small metal box all day, with no room to walk around and no water, there is no way they would have left their dogs with me! I wondered whether Joe knew that the dogs were being mistreated while he was away. I was under the impression that the other two dogs belonged to two different families and were there for several days. I then remembered the conversation when he said the dogs were on the truck (on Monday) and it then made sense. Not only did he know that was happening, he apparently condoned it and maybe even did the same thing himself. If you did that to a person, it would be considered mental and physical torture, and I think it's no less for a family pet and maybe other animals as well. If your dog was at Querencia Kennels April 22 to April 28 or so, it was one of the dogs that spent its days in a small metal box on the truck. Remember the dogs were on the truck Monday when I called. They were already on there on Wednesday when I arrived with my dog, and still there when I picked my dog up nearly 5 1/2 hours later. I imagine Mike went right back to what he wanted to do and continued to leave the dogs on the truck because that was convenient for him. People love their dogs and expect that they will receive a certain level of care and attentiveness at a kennel. If we had gotten back a few hours later as planned, or had even given him a few extra minutes of notice, I feel certain that Mike would have had the dogs in the play area, or at least in the "kennels." I would have been fooled into thinking that Molly spent most of the day there as Mike had implied would happen, and I would have thought she'd had fresh air, shelter, a place to walk around, and maybe even fresh WATER!!! "Angry" does not begin to explain how I feel or what I think about this. Mike gave me a $10 discount for being back early. How do you explain to an upset, traumatized dog that, gee, we got a $10 discount because you weren't mistreated any longer than you were? read more

I called about possibly boarding cats at this location. I spoke with Joe on the phone. Although they do not bored cats Joe was more than helpful on giving me ideas and locations to safely bored my cats. He had a great personality and was a pleasure to talk to. He even told me he'd give me a cup of coffee if I stopped by and said hello on my way to Yellowstone. Also gave me advice on snowmobiling at the park. if I had a dog I would definitely feel comfortable boarding here. I do not leave many reviews so this one should bring merit to anyone in question. They are getting 3 stars for the fact that the lodge was wonderful, clean and close to Yellowstone. The not so great part of this review is the dog boarding. I spoke with Mike on the phone when making the reservation and he ensured us we could board our dog the day after we stayed so we could go to Yellowstone. When we showed up that night, there was no one there. I called Mike and he ensured us Joe was around. We never saw Joe but did see 2 pups stuck in a kennel... by the time we left the next morning, we still had not seen anyone!! We definitely weren't leaving our dog unattended with people we'd never met! Fortunately, it was cool enough to take our dog and leave him in the car. We left our check on the table for our nights stay and left. We would have been up a creek had it been hot as there was no one to keep our dog. The two pups were still in the kennel when we left. Wish the experience had been what we were promised. read more
