Fat Bastard Burrito - Crispy Fish Bowl

We were traveling through Lindsey and the dining options were scant. We saw a Fat Bastard Burrito…read moreand figured this would be a good choice for everyone in our party because it would most likely be: 1.) Quick 2.) Hearty 3.) Cheap. We were needing to get back on the road to make it to our cottage before sundown, and we still had a lot of driving ahead of us. When we entered the eatery, we were promptly greeted. The two employees were very friendly and patient with us as we perused the menu. One of the things that instantly stuck out to me was the myriad of options as far as proteins were concerned. There were many options and surely everyone would be able to find something that worked for them. The way it works is once you make your order they will build your bowl or burrito to your specifications and then add the protein in last. For my bowl I got: Rice, Black Beans, Lettuce, Corn, Noodles (yes, noodles!), Crunchies, Cheese and Sour Cream. For my protein I got the Crispy Fish. Okay, this bowl was sooo good! The Crispy Fish was the standout- it was freshly fried and was a great complement to the other items in the bowl. I loved every ingredient in the bowl except for the shredded cheese because it was giving more of an oily taste as opposed to a smooth, mellow dairy sensation. The portion was very large and I was able to parlay this late lunch into my actual dinner once we got to our cottage. We ate our meals in the dining room which only had about 4 or 5 tables. It's definitely more of a grab and go type establishment, but we were grateful to have a place to eat our meals instead of having to scarf it down in the car. There was an accessible restroom too that was a welcome sight as we had been on the road for a few hours and had several more hours of driving ahead. Overall, Fat Bastard Burrito was a great experience. The food was great, it was quick and was an excellent value. Way to go FBB!!!

I was surprised to find a Mexican restaurant in Peterborough but hey, rating were okay and we were craving so why not. It was a pleasant surprise. The restaurant is a decent size that you could easily have a larger group have food. The staff was kind and patient and made sure we had everything we needed. I wasn't too hungry so I ordered a couple of tacos and the Mexican hot chocolate though everyone else in my group ordered full meals. Everything looked super legitimate and reminded me of my favourite authentic Mexican restaurant near home - Mexico Lindo. Not one person left unsatisfied. The starter chips and salsa also got cleared out by our group, they were so good! If you're in the Peterborough area, hit this place up, you won't be disappointed.

We ordered the lunch special (comes with a soup & burrito) and got the Tortilla Soup (Soupa Aztec) and a chicken burrito, and then fish tacos, and a shrimp taco. I really enjoyed the tortilla soup, which is really beautifully plated and the pico de gallo and guac are delicious. My second favourite thing were the fish tacos, which were not fried like at most restaurants but grilled, and that was a pleasant surprise! All the food was fresh and appetizing. The only downside to the patio is that there were wasps that kept bothering us :( Other than that, a really great experience!

That said there're some concessions to Tex-Mex, with the burritos and American cheese on the nachos. We were greeted with servings of what seemed to be light versions of nachos & 2 sopes (like the corresponding items on their menu, but with fewer toppings). The nachos used nice, crispy, firm tortilla chips. The sopes were decent (though I'm not a fan of Hispanic corn dough, since it's quite heavy & has a strong taste) Sopa de tortilla was very rich & tasty & slightly spicy. There was a nice texture from the tortilla bits & pork rinds. Caldo de pollo was good but it was just chicken soup with rice. The tacos were pretty big. Campechano was mostly beef & sausage inside, but was dry with a flat flavour. Yet, it was not the fault of the meat - on its own the stuffing was pretty tasty - it just didn't work in the taco. Camaron was pretty good it had a lot of herbs & had a fresh taste especially with the sour cream. Gringa was good: like Mexican pulled pork - more onion, more sour & less sweet than American pulled pork. Pastor was tasty spiced pork with pineapple, though it was better on its own outside the taco. Pambazo was a soft, very potatoey bun which was pretty good. Enchilada mole was quite small - you could just order 1. It was decent. The lime agua fresca drink had a good lime taste & tasted fresh & homemade. The desserts were decent too. 3 milks cake was pretty good - I've had moister but this was moist & rich. Bunuelos (fried dough) were decent - fresh with nice cinnamon, but very thin so they were all crunch; they were also a bit oily. Ice cream was normal.

I typically don't like sauce on my steak but the spicy and tart tomatillo sauce that is over the steak is fabulous. I like my salsa chunky but the rest of my family like the thin salsa. As far as the location goes, I must say they have very limited parking spots(but we found a spot). Parking spots were tight. However, there is ample parking at the big box store across the street, and they are on a bus line. They are not near other restaurants but stand out based on the loud Mexican music and big sign that has a Mexican flag Over all the service was friendly, attentive, and quick(especially considering how packed it was) They give nachos on arrival, sort of like how restaurants normally give bread, which were okay , but the salsa was bland. The lime margarita was amazing. I got the beef enchiladas, which were tender and loaded with food didn't quite pack the punch I was hoping for. My mom and my wife got the nachos with chicken;they didn't like it. So I tried it to confirm the following: the nacho platter with chicken was bland, with very little crunch. It looked like it was sitting around for a while as far as value goes, my wife's beer was more expensive than my margarita, which is a plus if you are an alcohol drinker like me but not for a beer drinker, obviously. The portions on my plate were small, but there were so many different items on the plate that blended together fairly well that the small portions didn't matter too much. And lastly, the smell of the place was nonexistent, which is odd IMO for a small restaurant.
