The ceiling fan, tower fan, and limited window airflow weren't enough to cool it down. If you stay here, leave the fan on full blast while you're out for the day; otherwise the room heats up like a sauna. The room was basic but fine: a comfortable bed, a small TV with local channels, and only one hand-wash dispenser--no shampoo or body wash provided. The Wi-Fi system is unusual. The lobby staff has to print you a ticket with a unique username and password. Even after connecting, the network didn't reconnect automatically so I had to return to the lobby for a newly printed login each time. One big plus is the basement lounge, which has a fully equipped shared kitchen (gas stoves, pots, pans, utensils, plates, etc.), along with a pool table, ping-pong table, and plenty of seating. The staff throughout the property were friendly and welcoming. Overall, the staff, price, and location are excellent, but the lack of air conditioning and the inconvenient Wi-Fi were dealbreakers for us. I wouldn't stay here again in the summer.

At check-in, there was an unexpectedly long disclaimer stating that they may share or sell guest information to the YMCA, which caught me off guard. Upon arrival, our room wasn't ready, but the front desk staff ended up giving us a different room. When we finally got to the room around 1:30 pm,, that's when things went downhill. The hallway was extremely warm. There was no air conditioning in the room but a ceiling fan and a floor standing fan, the outside temperature being around 75°F, our room on the 8th floor was uncomfortably hot. I didn't think that AC is an option. Lessons learned! The room itself was quite small--just a queen bed, a compact area with a kettle for tea and coffee, and a mini fridge. Overall, it felt more like a basic dorm-style accommodation than a hotel, and it wasn't what we expected. They have a shared kitchen and laundry in the basement. Front desk staff was friendly but housekeeping is ok. There are numerous good eateries on Queen Street within 20 minutes walking distance. I probably would pay a bit more for a room with AC as it is much needed. We didn't sleep well at all since the room temperature was too warm and we heard all the road traffic despite being on the 8th floor.

However, it's in a sort of out of the way cul de sac, so some buses may have trouble getting in. Not a problem - just make arrangements together rides near the Sky Tower or at the church at the end of the block. This, like most of Auckland, is a bit hilly. Prepare to go up and down hill a lot. Good tv and good wifi were pluses. Comfortable and clean. I was a bit disturbed by the lack of a deadbolt on the door, and for some reason, there was a door to another room attached to mine, but I couldn't open it (and I heard my "neighbors" try it as week, which was unnerving.) The room is a good size! It's not huge, but it has everything you could want -- a full kitchen (oddly, missing paper towels), space to move around, a TV with some good options and a nice bathroom (stay tuned). There's even a washer and dryer! Staff is so friendly -- they were really my first introduction to New Zealand, and I was really pleased. Now, some words of caution: * This hotel is on a hill. Auckland itself is full of hills. Unless you're taking a taxi, Uber or driving, you're going to have to walk uphill from the bus stop. It's rather steep. * Housekeeping is interesting. They made my bed and emptied the trash bin, but that's it. No towel service. * The bathtub in my room was rather gross, with pink mold around the caulking. A bit of bleach would fix that up. It's a bad blemish on an otherwise stellar stay! * Wifi is horrendous. I don't know if this is a NZ thing or unique to this property, but I'm glad my phone got a decent LTE signal here so I could use it. If you prepare with these things in mind, your stay will be a nice one. I'd come back (but I'd also probably go buy some bleach and paper towels).

We were recently in NZ on holiday, and we had a long drive up to the Bay of Islands, so we decided to break it up with an overnight stay just north of Auckland. The first place we reserved told us they didn't allow children (??), so we (with our toddler) had to scramble to find another place. I found the Beachcomber's website, advertising it as a boutique motel, and thought it was worth a try. We were able to book a room for that very night. Orewa is not too far north of Auckland, but there's a nice wide strip of beach and a small walkable commercial area. I'm sure it's a lovely beach getaway in the summer, but even winter was fine. This motel is a short walk from the centre and directly across from the beach park. Every room has its own personality. They seemed to be different sizes and layouts. Ours, Room 12 on the top floor, had a living/dining/kitchen area, and a bedroom in the back with ensuite. Our suite was red/white/black and the bedroom was very instagrammable. Black and white damask wallpaper, black chandelier, white tables. The living area up front had lots of seating options, funky wiry barrel-shaped tables, and a modern four-seat dining table. Room for our child's cot, too. Sliding glass doors (which we kept closed) would be lovely thrown open in summer, with the net curtain drawn to keep insects out. Probably necessary in summer - there is no central heating or air-conditioning, so we had to use a space heater from the closet (and there was a fan, for summer). A small door opened to a back outdoor walkway. The kitchen had a mini refrigerator, a microwave, sink, cooktop, kettle, glasses, utensils, plates. Large bathroom behind a barn-style door, and a generous-sized shower with a rainfall shower head. They have such a boutique vibe going on, they have surprisingly uninspired toiletries. Just dispensers hanging on the wall of the shower for shampoo and body wash, which is unfortunate, because it seems just a bit low-end for this kind of establishment. No guest elevator, at least none that I saw. Parking area is a little awkward because it's small - we parked on the end and reversed in, but if you had to park further in, getting out could be a little challenging, especially for large vehicles. Free wi-fi. Super cute! Probably my favorite accommodations the whole trip.

The new Wynyard Quarter is my favorite area, an old industrial port area that's being transformed into modern apartments, hotels, restaurants, cafes, and parks & gardens. It's come a long way since my last trip, even more fun. Doing research, I decided to just stay in this area this trip and was thankful I did. I found this new Travelodge and it's the best place to stay in Auckland. There's a grocery store downstairs, convenience stores, plus the seafood market and tons of bars/restaurants within walking distance. This trip I was going to stay three nights, which went down to basically one due an airline issue. The room was so clean and modern, with new views of the area. The welcoming was pleasant with a free bottle of wine on check-in (I don't drink wine, so was given a coffee instead). It's about 30 min drive to the airport from here; maybe 15-20 min walk to the Quay and CBD. Prices were reasonable for this convenience and new rooms/fixtures, less than $100US a night or less. I'm sure I'll be back to Auckland sooner rather than later, and I'll definitely be staying here.

A staff member stopped us and asked if we were doing the buffet and then told us she'd bring us the bill so we could sign our room. It felt like maybe a staff member should have brought us to our seat and asked us what we wanted to prevent being stopped at the food counter and having guest and staff play a guessing game. The breakfast selection is mediocre. Another table was sat and the staff member who stopped us was quick to go to their table and explain the menu choices to them so I'm not sure if it's a lack of consistency or if they need more staff during the breakfast shift because it seemed like it was just her and the hostess working. After reviewing the map of the Auckland central business district (CBD) and where the Sky Tower was, I knew I wanted to stay by the harbor, with a view and reasonably priced. That's when I came across M Social Viaduct Harbor. From Google Maps and looking at YouTube videos, the hotel was in the midst of it all. My first encounter with them was a few weeks earlier when I learned that M Socials last check-in time was midnight. Unfortunately, because my flight was schedule to land at 9:45 pm, having to get through customs and waiting for Uber, we'd be cutting it close. So I emailed M Social and they assured me that we could check-in after midnight, no rush since they knew how long customs could take. What a relief. When we got there, a little after 11 pm, I was told our room was upgraded to the 12th floor which is the highest floor. I was told "The harbor view is great up there." And it is!!! All the rooms face the harbor and all rooms have a view!!! The higher you are the better the view. And when we got to our room, we had a signed card from the employees along with Easter candy because I didn't realize it was Easter weekend when I booked our flights. The room was clean with modern and youthful aesthetic. And the price? I can't believe it is one of the least expensive hotels along the harbor. It was between $129 - $189/night. Of course, Weekends are higher price. And, laundry is free. We just had to pay for laundry detergent. No dryer sheets in Auckland, though. People in NZ said I had an American accent. But they're the ones with accents... lol. Auckland is also a melting pot. The front staff were mainly Filipino, Vietnamese, and Chinese. So they had their native accent along with the English accent. But everyone was so kind to us. And they have a restaurant that is open for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and late night socializing. Although we only had apps and drinks, the food was really good and non-alcoholic drinks were refreshing. As much as I want to gatekeep M Social, I also want to praise the staff members and hope everyone can enjoy your time staying at this wonderful establishment.
