While I was walking to a Capitola restaurant, someone's pet pit bull lunged at and bit me through my shirt and ended up making two puncture wounds in my chest. I was alone and didn't know the area, so I looked up the nearest urgent care, which happened to be Dominican Urgent Care. I wasn't in a lot of pain, but I was in shock, and I had no idea how quickly it was necessary to see a doctor after a dog bite. I drove a little faster than I normally do, especially once I got to the parking lot. I quickly parked and walked into the urgent care with oozing blood still making the stain on my shirt bigger. There were two women at the front desk, and when I said that I had been bitten by a dog, one of them asked me for my insurance. I told her I had Kaiser and that I knew this place wasn't a Kaiser facility, but I was from out of town and didn't know where the closest Kaiser was. I also knew that Kaiser would reimburse for emergency healthcare until stabilization no matter where it is performed, plus I knew that if there wasn't a local Kaiser, they would reimburse me for the entire bill. The other woman told me that if I paid out of pocket, the bill might be more than $1000, depending on what treatment I received. In my head, I was ready to fill out the paperwork and be seen by the doctor. I told them that I understood, and then the first woman said that Kaiser might not pay for anything if I knowingly got treated here without going to the closest Kaiser. I was annoyed by the tone of both their voices. Wasn't this the most American experience ever? I had just had a terrifying experience that caused a potentially serious injury, and the two nurses at an urgent-care facility were clearly trying to get me to leave. Even if their financial advice was sound--and it was--they could have treated me more like a patient than an unwanted pest. Exasperated, I asked them if they knew where the closest Kaiser was. One of them told me there was a Kaiser urgent care in Scotts Valley, and when I asked how far away that was, she kind of rolled her eyes and said it wasn't that far and that I should try that place. Again, perfectly reasonable advice, but I could do without the attitude. Plus, I had no idea whether adding twenty more minutes to my waiting time could be detrimental to my health. I didn't think it was an emergency situation, but I also have no medical training. These two women had medical training, but they neither made me feel at ease, nor did they reassure me in any way that taking more time to drive to Kaiser was the *medically* preferable option. I ended up going to the Scotts Valley Kaiser, and everything turned out fine, but Dominican Urgent Care was the first healthcare facility I visited after a traumatic event that injured me, and people here didn't give me relief, not even any peace of mind.

My eustachian tube dysfunction has given me trouble a couple of times before. She was very good with suggestions on what to do to help resolve it. But it may take longer to resolve with this cold.

It's amazing how with constant overflow patients, every time I've felt my illnesses were a prior ity with these doctors. One doctor probably saved my life. Dr. Sawhney, for some reason at the last minute decided I needed an echocardiogram and it turned out I had Afib. Her action prevented a possible stroke. Everyone's great: the receptionists, the PA's. (They were scheduled to close early for a company function) she made them tell us that they wouldn't be seeing us. They saw two other people that came after us and my mom's case was urgent. She was on time, got a FULL medical history on me before coming to any conclusions, and the part that made me want to cry-- when she didn't know the answer to something, she admitted it and was willing to do more research! That last part is like music to my ears after being misdiagnosed for years, being brushed off, or told it's just normal female problems. She listened and actually HEARD me instead of just waiting for her turn to speak. I left feeling respected, cared for, and hopeful. She never made me feel like I was a burden for having so many different medical issues at once. I wish more doctors were this compassionate and non-egotistical. It's frustrating enough to deal with all of these maladies-- it takes a one in a million doctor to sort through all of my chart info and somehow ease my frustrations a bit. I am deeply disappointed with the care I received at this urgent care. When my rapid strep throat…read moretest came back negative, the nurse practitioner immediately framed the situation as "it must be gonorrhea or chlamydia" and started me on STI treatment, presenting it as the only explanation. When I specifically asked if it could be something else, she essentially said no. This was not only inaccurate but also incredibly irresponsible. What should have been said was something like: "Because the rapid test is negative, I'll start you on antibiotics that cover different possibilities, including STIs, while we wait for the lab swab to come back. It may turn out to be another bacterial cause, such as tonsillitis, which won't show up on today's rapid test. Let's cover our bases until we know for sure." That would have been professional, accurate, and safe. Instead, I left the clinic believing I had an STI and accused my partner of giving it to me. This created serious and unnecessary distress and could have had lasting consequences for my relationship. Days later, I got my lab results back -- I do not have an STI. What I actually had was a severe case of tonsillitis caused by another bacterium. All of this happened while I was so ill that I hadn't eaten in two days and fainted in the exam room. For a provider to so confidently and incorrectly declare an STI, without caveats or confirmation, was not just careless -- it was unprofessional and potentially harmful. Clinicians have a responsibility to frame uncertain situations with caution and balance, especially when the social implications are so high. This experience fell far short of that standard.

I love Doctors on Duty on Ocean St. They're right down the street from my place, so I've been there…read moreseveral times. I've never had a bad experience there. All the staff treat people with dignity, courtesy, and respect. This last time I was there I came in with fuzzy symptoms. I was given a blood test, urine test, and EKG. They measured my blood pressure, pulse, and oxygenation. I told one of the staff he was very nice and he said "I love my job ". I don't go there under the best of circumstances, but when I leave I always feel better - at least about humanity.

I think she was worried about getting in trouble herself for not being able to do her job properly.
