We booked the half day private snorkeling charter and it could not have been better. The shop, dock, equipment and boat were all top notch. Chris was an excellent captain. My father, husband, and I chose Quiescence due to their six person limit on divers per boat. Actually, we had our own boat for three days of diving, which is unusual for Key Largo operators who normally stuff the boats full of snorkelers. Boat captains are willing to take your wherever you want to go. We recommend the Binwood and Speigel wrecks. Our dive master also told us about an area called the Aquarium, where if you sit perfectly still on the bottom you become surrounded by animal life. Very cool. Only down side was that these are self-guided boats. While we are all advanced divers and are perfectly capable of navigating our way back to the boat, it would have been helpful to know all the little hide-outs for animal life, etc... We found lots of eels and lobsters, regardless. read more

I hit up Quiescence with Natasha A, Rob D, & Yahaira A for a big 'ol birthday bash a couple of weeks back. They run small capacity (6 people dive boats) so you can fill-er-up with your own crew and make a private party out of it. You can bring whatever food & drinks you'd like, as well as all the nerdy fish i.d. cards you can stuff in your bag-- wait that's just Bean. Our Captain was super accommodating and basically gave our friend a complete snorkie lesson on site! read more

I used to love coming to this little boutique dive shop until they lost my tank when left for a visual inspection. Yes, it was left for a few months, however, I was assured that when I came back to the Reef it would be fine. I was treated by the staff like I was trying to defraud them and was made to feel very uncomfortable. They in fact tried to deny having it until they located the entry on their own log. In the end, they gave me an old beat up tank to try and settle it but it really wasn't a fair deal. Unfortunately, after giving them multiple opportunities to make it right they continued to rudely blow me off. Needless to say, I would not recommend these guys as they clearly don't stand behind their product. read more

Our experience with Quiescence Dive Center could not have been any better. Our group of 5 went out for an afternoon snorkeling adventure with Captain Johnny, and I don't think any of us wanted it to end. They are serious about keeping their trips small, and as a result we had the boat all to ourselves, which was great as we were able to really get to know our captain and pick his brain about the sites on the way out to the reef and the reef itself. One of the participants in our group had been involved in a serious boating accident awhile back, and this was her first time out on a boat following her injury. We let Captain Johnny know about this, and from that moment on, he was like an adoptive father to us all, but especially to her. Captain Johnny told us all about how he's been running the Quiescence boats since the 70s and has never had an accident or an injury to speak of, which was immediately reassuring. On the way out to the reef, he went out of his way to avoid large waves and wakes, and warned us all in advance of any sea changes. Even though it was Memorial Day Monday and the reefs were crowded, he managed to take us to places that were frequented mostly by families on private crafts and not overrun with large dive boats. As a result we got an awesome experience with plenty of sea life and minimal competition for prime viewing spots. We hit 3 different spots on the reef, each a little deeper and a little more dramatic than the last. The reef is in a protected area, and as a result it is simply teeming with life, from giant hermit crabs, urchins, anemone, massive brain coral, soft fan coral, parrot fish of all sized, king angels, grouper, yellow tail, barracuda ranging from babies to the (sort of scary, but awesome to see) human sized specimens, and a million tropical fish I don't have names for. At each spot Captain Johnny gave us a full rundown on what we could expect to see, what to look out for to avoid running aground on the reef, and the best way to navigate that particular place on the reef. We ended our day at the Christ of the Abyss statue and enjoyed a leisurely ride back into the dock, chatting amongst our group and with the captain like we'd known him forever. I would happily go back to Quiescence every day, and I recommend it highly for anyone looking for a great day out on the water. read more

This is an amazing place. When very few other outfits were taking trips due to rough seas, Quiescence was all about what we, as customers, wanted. They let us know what was happening out at the dive sites and let us make the decision. I was on a solo vacation, and buddied up with two others. Because it had been quite a while since my last dive, I also paid to have a guide come with. So total, for the same price all the other dive boats in the area, I was on boat with only two other clients, and the captain was wiling to take us wherever we wanted. The first dive was really rough with a strong current and 4-6 ft seas at the surface, and as a result of the poor conditions, we almost skipped the second dive. But the captain was really dedicated to finding us a better spot and he did. My guide got really sick and was unable to accompany me on the second dive. This is where Quiescence earned a 5th star. I didn't say anything because a mishap with the line on the first dive left him on the rough surface for an extra 30 minutes trying to untie the line from the rudder. But on my way home, Quiescence called me and said they wouldn't charge me for any part of the guide. I didn't even complain, they just had the decency to do this for me. They have earned themselves a very loyal customer. Next time I just hope the conditions are better... read more

What an amazing experience from the first phone call. I called to schedule a trip, first time my teenage boys diving in the keys, and Katie-Lauren answered. She was super nice and listened to my needs and made recommendations on what we should do. She found us a dive master within a few hours, Diana, to spend 4 dives with us. When we got to the dive shop it was a very easy experience from analyzing our nitrox tanks to getting rental gear. They brought all the gear down to the boat and loaded it up for us. They set our gear up on the boat, concierge style. Our boat captain Gavin was awesome telling us history of the dive site and all the do's and don'ts. He helped get our gear on and off, awesome Captain. Diana our dive master basically interviewed us before our first dive and made recommendations based on our skill level. She was able to communicate well with my teenagers in and out of the water. She identified things during the dive with her slate and made it an awesome dive experience. We highly recommend this dive shop, Diana, Gavin and Katie-Lauren made this experience amazing. I wish that I could dive with them every week. read more

I had a wonderful time diving with Quiescence this weekend. I was coming from out of town and the staff was very helpful in getting me a spot reserved in advance and answering all of my questions. I rented a wetsuit, BCD, and regulator there and everything was in great condition. I did the afternoon dive boat and was paired with another solo diver on the boat. My new buddy had some issues with his equipment and the staff were super helpful in troubleshooting and then letting him borrow a piece of their equipment so we could continue diving. Overall it was a great experience, beautiful water and life (we saw turtles, sharks, barracudas, eels, all kinds of fish), and great staff. I would definitely dive with them again and recommend to others. read more

I did a few dives with these guys Aug 7 ( my birthday as it turned out ) and I enjoyed their lower traffic smaller group approach. We were on a boat with a couple of local divers that afternoon and did French deep / ledge and Christmas tree cave. I enjoyed the laid back approach and how helpful the captain was. It felt less like a tour operator and more like being on your buddies boat. Later in the week I ended up at their shop again because they service my brand of computer and while they didn't have the part I was after they did managed to fix my battery door so I could keep using my computer for the rest of the week till I got home. None of the other shops I tried would touch it but they not only fixed it but didn't charge me either. All in all these guys were awesome to deal with and dive with, super friendly and helpful. This group has a very local-centric authentic feel and are about smaller groups. I will dive with them again when I find myself back in Key Largo in the future. read more

Was recommended to do my open water dives here and it was simply OUTSTANDING. My instructor, Cate Kelliher was one of the most professional, knowledgable, intelligent and safety conscious individuals I have ever encountered in a sport, and I've done a lot of sports. She is simply the best in the business. I was thinking how lucky the Quiescence owners are to find a one in a million professional. Everyone was extremely welcoming and friendly, boat captains and personnel were over the top helpful and diver conscientious. Their rental equipment is more like demo equipment; you'd buy it off the rack. After their two day open water course I feel extremely comfortable and will absolutely be back to dive with them again. First class outfit for sure! From the front desk to under the ocean and back, Quiessence definitely knows the crowd they cater to. Since I'd brought my own gear, I didn't need the little trolley out to the boat (a short distance behind the shop), and I felt safe leaving my vehicle in the parking lot butting up to the dock. Our Captain, Steve, was matter-of-fact, making sure we all understood the Coast Guard safety requirements before we began our journey. He let us know of the water jugs in the ice chest as well as best ways to avoid sea sickness (small boat and 2-3 foot waves could equal spewing over the side). He polled the 6 of us, determining the best diving locations for our desires and off we went. He gave us a quick debrief of the first dive (Reef dive), and off we went. There was no guide, so we were off on our own (with buddies of course), and although this could be mentally unsettling, it was freeing especially I being able to dive wherever (within the perameters Steve had set) we wanted and explore an area as long or short as desired without being whisked away to the next area (as some guides have a tendency to do). Spent almost an entire hour under water on both dives. The dozen or so guide led dives I'd done in the past maxed out at 45 minutes. With 1200 psi left, it was great to have that freedom of remaining down. Able to see eels, sting rays and barracuda. Even though it wasn't advertised as a part of the Quiessence experience, there were no refreshments other than the water provided. I suppose if I'd done more research, I would have better prepared and brought something with me; much as a seasoned Quiessence couple did, so I was grateful for their hospitality. Main pros: small boats so more personalized experience Friendly and professional staff Clean boats/outdoor showering area Main cons: No guide (if you're an less experienced diver, this might be unsettling) No light refreshments (nice to remove salt water taste in between dives) All in all, this was a great first time experience diving without feeling as if I were in school. I only wish I'd brought a light as looking into the wreck may have revealed more of the ocean's secrets. read more

We just finished a beautiful day snorkeling with Quiescence. Everyone was super friendly and accommodating. And our captain was superb: very knowledgeable of the area and waterways. Whilst avoiding the crowds, we got to see some fantastic fish and reefs -- in a very relaxing and intimate way. It was a great day and we are sooo sooo glad that we chose Quiescence vs. one of the larger boat tours. It was a great day. We had a fantastic snorkel trip for our family of 5 this past weekend! Captain Dave was a great guide to the area, kind, and really good with the kids. He even rescued a man who was having trouble swimming and freaking out when we were at the Christ statue site and helped him back to his boat tour. They had all the supplies we needed to snorkel. Since they only take out 6 people max it was just our family of 5 on the boat, which made it a great, personalized experience. If you want a personal snorkel or diving experience down in the keys, this is the place to go. Captain John was spectacular and made sure everyone felt comfortable in the water. The boat takes out a max of 6 people so it didn't feel like you were trapped in a boat like sardines. If there is somewhere specific you would like to go they'll take you there. It was a 4 hour trip of snorkeling and all the gear is included in the price if needed. As a Florida native it was a great experience just getting out there in the water and not worrying about a thing everything is taken care of. The whole team was incredible. I went out with my girlfriend and a group of 4 other people that we didn't know, at first. We had a great trip (even though I ended up getting sea sick). Our captain, Steve, took us out to an easy location to let us get comfortable and then asked us where we wanted to go next and if we were ready for something a little more challenging as far as the choppiness of the ocean. Steve was great to be around and suggested places to eat after the trip (hobos, right down the street). We saw a decent amount of ocean life and when my girlfriend mentioned she really wanted to sea a turtle, Steve drove us out to a place where you usually see turtles before we went back in after the trip (even though we didn't end up seeing one). Great trip, well worth the money to have everything taken care for you. Highly recommended. read more

We had a great snorkeling experience with Steve as our captain! Quiescence only puts six people on a boat so our family had a private trip. He asked us about or comfort level with snorkeling and swimming, what we had seen so far on our vacation, and what we would like to see, and then catered the day for us. We wanted to stay away from the large groups of snorkelers and the over-hyped tourist destinations. He did not disappoint! We snorkeled two great reefs with tons of coral and fish including rays, nurse sharks, barracuda, and so much more, but very few boats. After that my daughter requested sea turtles......and he found us some! Amazing! The people in the store were friendly, the boat was clean with water to drink and a cooler we could use, and the equipment was in good condition. It might have cost just a little bit more than the large snorkel boats that hold 30 people or more....but it was worth every penny to get our own experience. I would absolutely book a snorkel trip with them again. read more

First, a confession. I have not dived here for a few years. For many years, I went only with them, as they have small boats, and will take you to places you want to go to. No cattle cars. Also, they have the proper equipment, and even size small BCDs to rent. They were good about keeping us informed of weather conditions when we checked in before the dive, and good about letting us cancel if conditions were not ideal. I always had great dives with them. I haven't been able to dive in a few years, so I don't know the recent scoop. But they have a very good long history of good service. read more

My friends and I snorkeled here earlier today and we couldn't have asked for a better experience. We were nervous about snorkeling (we usually aren't this adventurous) but everything was set up to ease our nerves. The men that helped us during check in were friendly and fun. They explained everything thoroughly and helped us to try on our flippers (is that even what you call them? I don't know) and masks. Never did we feel rushed. Once aboard the ship, our captain (Harry) took us to some really amazing reefs! On the way out he pointed out various wildlife to us and was so knowledgable about everything (and didn't seem to mind that we asked him a million questions). On our way back in we were sad to leave all those beautiful reefs behind. A few of us decided to buy shirts to remember our amazing day and the woman who helped us was also lovely and amazing. She told us about how she designed the lovely women shirts we were purchasing and gave us coupons to a local restaurant. Hopefully tonight's dinner experience will be as rewarding as our snorkeling trip. read more

Booked a 2 dive morning trip with my son and a friend and his daughter. Loved the idea of small boats with only 6 divers. Makes it so much more enjoyable! Staff was great and very service oriented. They set everything up and load it for you. Our captain (Steve I think) was great. We were on boat #1. Very professional, knowledgeable and he spent time to draw diagram of the bottom features to help us navigate. Everyone from the shop to the boat seemed to appreciate us as customers. This charter was top notch. It was my second time out on a charter ever in the ocean so I was a bit nervous mostly about breaking the rules and things like that. Overall it was outstanding trip. I don't remember my captains name but we were on Q 1 on 8-20-16 and had a deep dive requested. They asked us which wreck we wanted to dive and we really wanted to see the Spiegel Grove so thats where we went. They put us right over the top of it, gave us a layout of the wreck and left the rest up to us which is my preference. I have a ton of dives under my belt and experience and they recognized that and did not talk to me like I was a beginner. He let us do our dive and then assisted us getting back in the boat. If you're looking for a nice boat with amenities, this is not your charter, but if you're here to dive then this is the best. The captain switched all of our tanks around for us before we could even strip out of our wet suites and rinse our face off. This charter is TOP NOTCH and I will be diving with them again. read more

I've been diving in the Keys since the 1960s, lived here since 1980, ran a competitor dive shop for several years. This dive shop has been operating since before the establishment of Pennekamp Park. They will show you the sights like nobody else can. And they are anti cattle boat - 6 divers per boat max. Lovely. Professional. Friendly. Don was excellent. took us to some places that were out of the way and not as crowded as other popular dive sites. having only 6 divers per boat is a great plus since you don't have top deal with the 'cattle'type situation you find in other operators. Our dive center (Central Coast Dive Center, No KY) recommended Quiescence for our Diving Experience in the Florida Keys. My husband, son, and I are new divers. We are from Northern KY and our open water experience is all in a Quarry. We set up a dive with Quiescence and asked for a guide to be included. I want to say that our first time diving in the ocean was an amazing experience! Largely in part to the people at Quiescence! Kate and Matt were excellent! We explained that we are new divers and they were patient and guided us around the reefs. We enjoyed 4 dives on 2 different days and they made us feel very much at ease and calmed alot of our anxiety! Went snorkeling today at Quiescence. Never heard of the place until I checked around online 2 days ago. I wanted more of a "personal experience" and liked their 6 person maximum per boat rule. Due to the 4-5 foot waves there were only 2 of us on board. It was a great adventure and would go back again and recommend to others. We passed two other larger boats that were packed with people and music blasting. We were thankful we didn't choose those types of excursions. read more
