My buddies and I were in town for a weekend getaway to watch our home football team the Lousiville Cardinals play a football game. Our local university had a pregame party at a place called the tabernacle and while we parked to walk to this event we came across this art piece. Decent sized piece. I'm not sure Atalanta connection with vine city movers being an out of Townes but it's always cool to see public art throughout different cities.

She seemed so excited about the history here and even gave my son a scavenger hunt board so he could search for different items While we toured. He LOVED it! He even won a prize at the end. They have their own parking lot out front and the admission is very low ($9 per adult, 5 and under are free, and my 7 year son had student pricing of $6). It's located right next door to the Marietta Square market food hall. The garden was awesome to explore! Each plant, vegetable and fruit had signage so we knew exactly what we were looking at. It was so fun to see what they grew and used in the cook house. Eggplants, watermelons, pumpkins, Lima beans! I loved seeing the bumble bees floating around the beautiful flowers. It was nice seeing how well taken care of the garden was. There is an awesome art sculpture in the garden that was created by the KSU art and design. The gift shop is beautiful and had so many awesome items and merch to purchase! Love, love, loved! I can't wait to go back during the holidays and see the space lit up.

There is a farm house here built by Peter Valentine Kolb but presently is a residence for the park ranger with no tours. We stopped for a moment to take it all in.

According to its website it has double chimney and the size of the farm house although modest for today's standards is actually pretty big back in those days. There is a cemetery nearby as well as two historical markers. They read as the following: BATTLE OF KOLB'S FARM June 22, 1864 The extension of the right wing of Federal forces S. of the Dallas Rd. threatening to outflank him, Johnston sent Hood's Corps [CS] from the right (E. of Kennesaw) to this, the extreme left, with directions to stop further Federal advances. Hood sent Stevenson's 4 brigades [CS] - 2 astride the road, and 2 N. of it, against the 20th and 23d corps troops [US] posted astride the road to the W. This, and later attempts failed to check the Federal extensions southward. 033-13 GEORGIA HISTORIC MARKER 1984 The second marker reads Battle of Kolb's Farm June 22, 1864 The 14th Kentucky (2d Division, 23d A.C.,) together with the 123d N. Y. (1st Division, 20th A.C.,) [US] were posted as skirmishers East of the Kolb farmstead. This 10 foot Corinthian column erected in honor of some 400 mainly women who were wrongfully…read morecharged with treason by German Sherman as part of is Atlanta Campaign in July of 1864. Then adding insult to injuries they were shipped up North along with their children and most were never heard from again. The top of the column is deliberately shattered at the top to symbolize the families and lives torn apart from this tragedy. The monument sits at the tail end of Sloan Park in downtown Roswell. Them monument base has words carved into them on three of the four sides The first side says Honoring the memory of the four hundred women children and men mill workers of Roswell who were charged with treason and deported by train to the north by invading Federal forces July 10, 1864 The second side says To the men of Roswell and Cobb County who served the confederate states of America. Or when I'm driving to the Poncey-Highlands for drinks. So basically, I still you see everyday. I appreciate the effort, Hill Street Beauty Spot if not the lack of creativity in naming you. Well, I guess they were really kind of limited in choices. "Hill Street." Ok, that makes sense. "Beauty Spot." Well, that's about the outer edge of superlatives that end of Hill Street can bear. I doubt many would accept "Hill Street's Location of Stupendous Pulchritude" nor would they swallow "Hill Street's Median of the Becoming" though, knowing how streetwalkers used to lounge in this area, if someone would be coming here, undoubtedly much swallowing would follow. So we're stuck with the Hill Street Beauty Spot, an area of median on Hill Street gussied up with plants and flowers and other assorted landscaping tricks. Oh and a huge wooden sign that declares in no uncertain terms "Hill Street Beauty Spot." Well okay then. In fact, since the city demolished the last of the projects nearby on Memorial, they've terraformed the remaining parcels into a land of rocks and mulch. Not much in the way of a park, but it beats the Squatters Sheraton/Hobo Hotel that was there. So, Hill Street Beauty Spot, you get an A for Effort and a C for Execution. Let's just average that out to 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

This is the first Tour of Homes that I've attended and I loved it. Check-in was located at the…read moreYWCA on Highland Avenue. There, we were given a bag which contained a water bottle, some booties, and a booklet which included a map, background on each house, and featured sponsers. There were seven homes available for viewing and one church. I ended up driving to each home, though walking is an option if you're up for a good walk in between some locations. I drove because it was rainy and plus I wasn't sure about how far apart each house would be. Street parking was not an issue at all. There was plenty of space available, although this may have been because of the rain. In each home was set up a local restaurant, which offered samples to tourist. This was a very nice touch. A few that I remember include Noche, Timone's, Moore Farms, and La Tavola. Though I don't remember which restaurants served what, I can tell you that I enjoyed lobster bisque, tomato soup, quesadilla (Noche), skewered beef (Noche), a most delicious banana pudding and assorted pastries, bacon wrapped dates (Noche), mozzarella cheese and tomatoes in a basil sauce, fresh apples and cheese (Moore Farms), and salami and cheese. Everything was quite good. Some restaurants had coupons that could be used for a future visit. You had to put on the provided booties or take your shoes off to enter each home. Some people were walking around bare footed (and might I add, EEEwwwww) but most had on the booties or some socks. The homes were beautiful and totally inspiring. I loved every minute of observing the decor and learning the backgrounds of the homes. Also, some of the home owners were present as strangers went all around their homes. Understandably, there were some areas that were not a part of the tour and these areas were clearly marked. At each home, volunteers were available to help tourist and ensure that everyone was respectful of each home. They also were able to answer any questions that one may have had about the home. At each home, the greeter would sign your book to acknowledge that you had been to that home. I don't think they allow but one visit per home. Tickets for this event were $25 in advance and $30 at the door. All in all, I really enjoyed this event and I thought it was well organized. Homes were clearly marked, the maps were accurate and provided addresses, and everyone working the event was pleasant and helpful. 5 stars all day long.

Saw a request for volunteers that mentioned that volunteers get 2 free tickets for their time. I…read morefigured that it would be a nice way to see the charming homes of Virginia-Highland. In 2013, there were 9 stops- 8 homes and Briarcliff Summit (for the first time ever on the tour). Ticket pick-up, parking, and volunteer sign-in was at the YWCA. A nice central location for the event. You get a nice tote with a few items- including bottled water, which can come in handy. How it works: You have the choice of taking the tour on a Saturday or Sunday. Walk or drive around to the different locations on the map. When you enter the home, a volunteer will cross off on the map that you have entered the home. You can only enter once. Other volunteers will be available to direct you and potentially tell you facts about the home and answer questions. In each of the 8 homes, neighborhood restaurants set up shop to serve mini servings of their dishes. Note that you will need to wear booties or go barefoot in the homes in order to protect the owners' flooring. Pros: I appreciated the food since I had been volunteering during an early shift. The food from the restaurants was great for the most part and some offered coupons so that you could try them out in full at a discount. A nice variety of homes and few were very special. I appreciate the homeowners opening their homes to us. The crowds were all in good spirits even though it was a rainy and chilly day. Cons: The first house I went to was out of food just as we arrived. And there were HOURS left of the tour. So that was disappointing. All the other restaurants had food left as we went around though. Not enough time on Sunday for the entire tour if you are volunteering. I wish it had been open one hour later. Take home: I plan to go again next year.
