I've been to most of the presidential libraries. This is less fancy than others. No boastful…read morewartime tales like Eisenhower. No scandal like Clinton's. No WWII like FDR. No bomb like Truman. But that's Jimmy's style. This is probably the most apolitical "makes everyone happy" museum there is. It really focuses on his wins, especially in the Middle East peace accords. Doesn't mention the Reagan scam to hold the Iranian hostages until after the election. Doesn't say anything about his unpopularity or how he handled it. Downplays the energy crisis (but doesn't avoid it altogether). Glosses over his loss of the White House. Talks a lot about his humanitarian feats, and that's okay, because that's the crux of the Jimmy Carter presidency and the majority of his life after. The museum also focuses more on the First Lady, Rosalyn, more than any other museum I have in memory. If you watch the 15 minute film in the beginning, it tells you everything you're going to see in the museum. Maybe that makes the mental work easier, but also a little boring. The Jimmy Carter library is the only one I've seen that offers so many activities to take throughout the museum, including word searches, crosswords, and quiz sheets. I really like this because it is Jimmy's spirit--engage children and others to interact with the world around them and think about how to make it better. I think I paid 12 dollars to enter, which is more than fair. The staff was super kind and accommodating. Worth a stop if you're nearby, but I don't know if I would pull off the interstate to see.

The exterior of the building is beautiful with a pool leading up to the entrance. The pool is blue and undamaged (take notes Trump). There is a walking path with a pond in the back along with a Japanese garden in the back. There are also statues and separate buildings for research and a peace retreat. Inside the Museum, there is the usual gift shop to get your token souvenirs. The museum is setup in chronological order starting with him growing up on a farm in Southern Georgia, his military service in WW2, his rise in local politics, his Presidency and then in my opinion his most impactful part, his post Presidency. The displays are very well done with artifacts through all phases of his life. They have his paperwork from his military service, gifts given to him while president from other heads of state, his Nobel Peace Prize, and lots of other stuff. During his presidency, they have a timeline wall with pop culture events that happened during that time. The mock Oval Offices are always my favorite part of these museums. I like to see what each president had in their offices. Jimmy was far from a great President, but he was a phenomenal man. The museum does a great job of capturing all of it.

What a massive drawing and the effort that has gone into the original creation and the pain to restore it. The painting is itself spectacular and top of that they have added a visual aids element to it and makes the whole art more digestible and easy to understand. There are other portions of the exhibit we come to visit and know lots of history about Atlanta. One day is not enough to cover all the exhibits.

From what I read of the other reviews, it looks like this museum was very different a few years ago and to be honest it sounds more like what I hoped it would be. It's a shame that they took out all the memorabilia and erased all information about Mitchell to spout their new agenda. Skip this, it's not worth it.

I returned recently for the first time ever as an adult. And I have to say it is a completely different experience and museum than I remember (and when I spoke to the staff they confirmed almost e rushing about what I remembered , and missed so I know my memories weren't dreamt up or anything like that) My biggest takeaway is that it is less about Margaret Mitchell (the woman) than it used to be and more about the cultural phenomenon that Gone Woith the Wind was, both good and bad. Especially through the lens of 2025 sentimentality. I would say about 20% is about MM and the rest really focuses now on GWTW from a very 21st central view. Which, as a liberally minded woman I take no issue with, however it was not what I was expecting. I have to say I missed the focus on the woman. Before it was much more of the building and her apartment and her day to day life. I can remember clearly seeing the refrigerator that she actually owned and hid the manuscript in. The current incarnation doesn't really need to take much of anything from the historical location of the home, which kind of rendors it unnecessary. I'm one of the who really enjoys looking at old properties and a big part of what I was looking forward to seeing was the details. Those no longer really exist. There are exactly 2 rooms with anything remotely like a "home tour" which was not the case before. Now that's not to say it was not interesting or a worthwhile stop. There is a lot of unique perspectives and artifacts surrounding the boom and movie wether you are a fan or not. It just was not what I had remembered or expected to see. The name Margaret Mitchell House feels a little bit like a bait and switch in its current incarnation but it was still very interesting!

Nice home, small for its era of plantation homes. It was nice seeing the true story of the impact of African Americans - without them there is no Roswell. Without black free labor there is no America in the way we see it now. Free labor fueled the wealth of many dynasties. A nice one hour or 1.5 hr is enough time to see everything. You may want to read up on the house and area before you arrive to ground you in the founding of Roswell. If you love antiques, there's tons to see! Lots of pics on wall. This specific founder wasn't ostentatious so its the opposite of gold, lavish, etc. Its humble wealth! They were devout Presbyterians who were conflicted on owning slaves; private/ secret abolitionist who taught their slaves to write. Telling other locals it was for God so his slaves could read the Bible. But truly it was so they had a skill and could be more than slaves! Remarkable! Fun visit. There are two more grand homes, larger, more lavish by 2 other Roswell early founders, about a mile away. So if you have more time, do it all in 2 to 3 hours. We sat on the porch for 30 min just rocking, nice chairs! We may not ever go back but it was worth seeing!

All are located within a 1/2-mile radius, and 2 are literally within about 200 yards of each other. Our third stop was at Smith Plantation. It is located close to the Roswell business / restaurant district, and is adjacent to the city hall (with which it shares a parking lot). Like the others, there is no fee here. We entered via the front door and interacted with the welcoming docent, who asked for our zip code and how we'd heard about the venue. You are then free to wander the house via whatever route you like. Most rooms have a sign with a 4-digit code. You call a phone number (the same one used at the other 2 houses) and enter successive codes as you proceed. For each code, there is an accompanying description of the room's historical context and of its furnishings. These mansions all seemed to follow the same basic floorplan - a central linear hallway with 2 or 3 rooms off each side and a staircase at the end. This home had been upgraded / modernized in the 1940s, so some parts have a different feel than the other 2 open homes. For instance, this one has a kitchen that is more relatable, and there is an actual master bath added upstairs. This also seemed to be the smallest of the 3 homes. There is a bit more information about the last people who lived in the house, as they were there until the 1980s. There are also a few outbuildings here. If you only had time to tour one house of the 3, I'd still begin with Bulloch Hall. However, this place was nice to visit if you have another 30 - 45 minutes.

I wasn't ready But…read morewho could be ready for a miniature chair collection that was so unique that the Guinness book of records had to make a category for this specific passion? When a few of us were wandering around main street in Stone mountain exploring, we came across a sign that said mini chair museum this way. After doing some searching and asking for directions, we found the small little unassuming house with Ms. Barbara Hartfield, the Chair woman herself! The front room has a decent amount of chairs to see, but you if you want to get into the museum (and you should), it's $5 for single entry, and $4 for a group. If you're lucky enough, you'll get a walking tour of the museum like we did, from Ms. Hartfield, who was very happy and eager to explain all of the chairs and displays. The museum consists of three main rooms (don't forget to check the bathroom for more chairs!) and have chairs from all over the world, featuring chairs that she had placed/displayed categorically in alphabetical order. I could go into the types of chairs you'll see here, but to do that would be a multi page review, so i'll leave the photos to speak for me. If there's a type of chair you like, trust me when I tell you, Ms. Hartfield has it. To get a peak at their collection, check out their website too: www.museumofminiaturechairs.com Beyond chairs, there's several cutouts of articles written about the collection from different parts of the world that are placed on the walls throughout the museum, which document the history of her growing collection. In her front room, the Guinness world record is proudly displayed also. The museum is open only on Fridays and Saturdays but has been around for 7 years! While there is no parking on main street (where the Collectibles and Antique chair gallery resides), it does have parking in the rear, though from some of the smaller shops, it's an easy walk. If you want to see a particular chair up close, don't be afraid to ask, as Ms. Hartfield will happily open the glass cases and allow you to hold them. I never got the history of where the chair fascination began, but it's impressive, with a series of chairs large (cookie jars) and small (thimble size)...just don't mistake them for dollhouse furniture and you'll stay on the good side of this collecting queen. Very interesting one of a kind museum and shop that I guarantee you also aren't ready for...but that's the point of places like this, right? Go check it out, give Ms Hartfield some business and be a part of this one of a kind show!

We visited the Freedom Hall museum gallery, located on the campus of the Martin Luther King, Jr…read more Center for Nonviolent Social Change, aka King Center, on Jan 5, 2026 as part of Road Scholar's "The Civil Rights Movement - Atlanta, Montgomery, Selma, Birmingham" program. 45 minutes was scheduled for this admission-free visit. That was barely enough time to see the gallery and the grand water fountain (listed as "Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Fountain" on Google). The tombs of Dr. King and Mrs. King lay towards the west side of the fountain. Inside Freedom Hall, the gallery is on the second floor, and the gift shop on the first floor. While there was no security checkpoint in this building, security guards were present. Their duties included of the no-photography policy in the museum - which they were quick to do - and keeping hobos out - which they were slow to do. One such hobo was pestering members of our group (one at a time) for money, claiming he needed it for his wife's alleged hospital expenses. He smelled like he hadn't showered for weeks. Despite the no-photography policy, I took some pictures in the gallery: Nobel Peace Prize award set (2 shots), Grammy award, and FREE-DOM glass sculpture. I liked that Gandhi is included in the exhibit, with an artwork of the Mahatma and Dr. King hanging on a wall in the foyer. (After all, Gandhi's non-violent movements predated Dr. King's ones by one generation.) We didn't have time to appreciate the Peace and Meditation Garden, the King Center building itself, or take the shaded walkway behind the fountain. The latter had mural pictures of Dr. King. We then went to a visitor center located across the street in Fire Station No. 6 for more exhibits. In addition, we saw Dr. King's birth home on 501 Auburn Avenue, NE. It was also under renovation, so only the exterior was viewed from the public walkway. Our final stop was at Ebenezer Baptist Church. Thankfully, that wasn't under renovation. The visitor center in Fire Station No. 6 was a temporary venue for the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park, which was closed for renovation. The only area of the Historical Park that was available to visitors was the Rose Garden. If you have up to a day to spare, the King Center is worth the visit when done together with the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park (when opened to visitors), his birth home (when opened to visitors), and Ebenezer Baptist Church. At least a 4-star experience.

THE WILLIAM-PAYNE MUSEUM…read more The William-Payne House was built in 1866 and located in the area of Mt. Vernon and 400. It was moved to its current location in 1940 and extensively remodeled. It currently houses the "Civil War in Sandy Springs" exhibit. The exhibit does a great job of detailing Sherman's march from Chattanooga to Atlanta, identifying the conditions of the day, challenges and of course the impact of the war on Sandy Springs residents. The letters from local residents painted a vivid picture of everyday like and the destruction that was left following the occupation by union soldiers. In addition to letters, (copies), there are maps, photos, picture of local soldiers, and artifacts. I like to read and discuss so it took me approximately one hour to go through the exhibit but would probably take 30 minutes for others. This is the perfect tour for school age kids because of its size. There is a downloadable app that allows you to listen to narration if you prefer. Interesting facts: In 1866, the population of Sandy Springs was 1000, while Sherman's men numbered 100,000. By the end of the war, 40% of the Union soldiers were black and 40,000 of them died during this time This museum is only open on Wed and Sat from 11am until 2pm and this exhibit will only be available for another week so get movin!
