But I have definitely been around my fair share of event spaces. And Hawthorne House seems like a good one. There is a nice little chapel. It's crisp and clean and bright. Also, I appreciate that it's a "chapel" but it's not remotely religious. It's basic, to be sure, but I think there's a lot to be said for simplicity. My only complaint was that the acoustics here are ROUGH. Plan on adding some sound absorbing features if you want people to actually be able to hear what's going on. OR, ban loud, noisy children from attending. Seriously, I couldn't hear a single word of the ceremony because of a few irritating babies. You cross a nice little bridge through some trees, and then you're at the reception venue. I was quite impressed. The aesthetics match the chapel in that it's simple and clean. There are quite a few windows and the lighting is fancy without being overly ornate. The bar is completely adequate, and has room for 8 taps of beer, if that's your thing. Around the front of the house is a wraparound porch that just felt great to be on, as if you were at the house of some wealthy relative. And the front lawn is expansive with a pretty nice little gazebo. Not sure what you'd do there, but I'm sure it would fulfill your gazebo needs. My only complaint about the reception hall itself was the limited number of bathrooms. I can see with a larger event how there'd be a line for the facilities. The staff was all friendly and helpful, an stayed out of your way. The food was provided by the venue, and it was alright. It wasn't all totally to my liking, but that could be the menu the couple selected, or the cooks could have had an off night. But they kept the buffets filled and hot and did a good job otherwise. I can't say that I was OMG blown away by Hawthorne House, but I was certainly impressed. Any bride-to-be that chose this venue would be making a wise decision.

Outdoor weddings at the gazebo are lovely and so are the indoor weddings in the chapel. The bridal suite is spacious and has and area dedicated to hair and make-up. If I were a bride, I would just soak it all up - take breakfast and eat on the balcony outside of the bridal suite, in the morning and enjoy every moment of my time there. I haven't even talked about the food yet... Lets just say, AMAZING! I've had Chicken Marsala, Parmesan Crusted Tilapia, Sirloin Tips (my personal fave) and that's just the entrees - the mashed potatoes. The roasted red potatoes, the steamed broccoli, the glazed carrots... There is nothing that I've eaten there that has been less than fantastic. They had an appetizer item at the last wedding I shot there that was so good I looked it up to pass it along because I wasn't sure of the name - it was the Rosemary and Parmesan Shortbread Crackers with Roasted Cherry Tomatoes and Feta Cheese the crackers were heart shaped and looked awesome on the tray. The ambient light from the chandeliers at night is stunning in the reception area and the natural window light flooding the room during the day is a photographer's dream! If you are looking for a classy, elegant, charming chapel or a floral picturesque outdoor wedding this is definitely worth your time checking it out. During the wedding, a couple friends came up to us and asked, disbelieving, "Where did you FIND this place!? It looks like you BUILT it especially for your wedding. It's just perfect!!" We felt the same way. It was exactly what we were looking for. The space is used as a photography studio during the day, and is used as an event space on weekends and evenings (I believe). It cost us about $3000 + extra fees (security, wait staff, etc), but was definitely worth it. We looked at several loft spaces in the area, and this was head-and-shoulders above the rest. The space is on the second floor of the building, which once served as a Buick dealership during the early 20th century. Remarkably, the space includes a great many original details, such as the car-sized elevator that used to bring cars up to the second floor showroom (VERY useful for bringing a/v gear, musical instruments, etc up to the space), while also feeling very hip and modern. The floors have been beautifully restored, and the colors of the space are very warm and inviting. Whoever restored the space did a fabulous job. We had both our wedding and reception at the space, and our 150 guests were accommodated quite nicely. I would strongly caution against many more than 150, however, or some of your guests won't have a place to sit. The wedding reception was held on one half of the loft, after which a curtain was drawn, and the space was reconfigured by the staff to function as a reception area, complete with tables, a DJ setup, etc. The changeover process took only 15 minutes, and we were able to entertain guests with some live jazz during the interim. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful, and Sandy, the event manager, is a dream to work with. Combine this space with flowers from Craig Sole Designs and catering by Chef Nancy Stark, and you're in for a wedding to remember. Everyone told us that our wedding blew them away, and I firmly believe that Berg Event Space was a huge part of our wedding's success.

The food was brought in so we didn't eat the items from the venue menu. It was a dim sum meal and there was a lot of seafood-which caused us to leave early as my husband has a shellfish allergy. I'd like to start this with saying that Bill and Dawn are very nice to work with. That said, our…read morewedding ice luge was such a disappointment and we were so bummed. This was supposed to be a major focal point of our event. We asked for a large martini glass with a spout for an espresso martini bar and we spent a lot of time figuring out where this would go and how it would be seen on the day of. We went back and forth on the design and then one day they called and said that they were going to add our initials in the glass without additional charge. It was the first vendor that actually made us feel like they were truly trying to work with us on our vision and do what's best for the piece. When we got to see it the day of, we built up so much excitement. It was so small, so plain, no initials, really almost no design work to it, flat instead of a rounded martini glass, and the spout was just straight down - almost like it was an afterthought. It did the job but it was absolutely not the focal point. You have to pay in full prior to seeing the work, so that for us was wasted money. We actually removed another design piece of our wedding to do this, so you can imagine how upset and disappointed we were, especially after seeing the other work they've done. It really confused us for how kind and giving they were. We did not expect what we got and, quite frankly, got played.
