I've passed by Quruxlow countless times and finally stopped in! They have a huge private parking lot. The front windows as of Oct 2020 are still boarded up and you may wonder if they're even open (I did). But there two sets of double glass doors that are unlocked if they're open. The waiting area at the is absolutely beautiful, I should've taken pictures! I went around 1:30 pm on a Wednesday and it was pretty packed with people waiting for to-go orders. I wasn't sure of where the line was if any but after just a few minutes, someone called out to me "Sister! What would you like?" They have a case with desserts and small foods so I ordered a couple sambusas to go. They warmed them up for me, tossed them in the bag with some green sauce and I was on my way. The sambusas are $2 each which I think it seasonable and about the same price as other spots. These sambusas had ground beef and onion. The green sauce super spicy for my weak tolerance but was also so good that I ate it with almost every bite! I went through like 5 tissues by the end haha Overall really easy takeout experience, next time I'll order something more substantial than just sambusas! read more

I would say I am bias as I have Somali friends who have made me delicious homemade Somali food before and this didn't really taste like it. But I still wanted to check this place out and still support local businesses, I came here a couple times and both times it did take a while to actually order although it was not busy. The food was still good and the portion services are huge! But the food was pretty oily, not what I was used to. Not sure if I would come back but I do want to check out other POC businesses in the area and still recommend folks to try it here at least once. read more

This place is a bit hard to find, and a little intimidating to go into as there's virtually no signage and a bit of a language discrepancy (for those that may be getting lost trying to find this place, it's located within the parking structure and is part of a larger shopping bazaar). We weren't sure where to actually order, but some of the other restaurant-goers saw that we were having difficulty, and guided us to the right place. Once we managed to find where to order at though, things were pretty smooth sailing from there. As other Yelpers had mentioned before me, the dining area is indeed divided into 2 separate areas, 1 for men, and 1 for women. We opted to sit with the rest of the women, but women can sit in the men's section if they happen to be with their boyfriends/partners, and are also not Muslim as well. We had the cashier order for us, as there appeared to be no established menu. When we got our food (which came out super quickly!), we were astonished to see how much food was piled onto our plates (well, takeaway containers, incase we had leftovers, which we most certainly did). I guess it comes as no surprise, but the food was very similar to the stuff you'd find at most Halal carts/restaurants, at least in NYC. The rice was absolutely delicious, and since I'm a vegetarian, I opted to get some falafel from the takeaway portion of the establishment. The falafel itself wasn't too good, but man, was that rice good. I also got one of their drinks, which was super cheap and sweet. The green sauce that came with our dishes added a nice bright kick to our food as well. Quite an adventure of an experience, overall, and I'm glad we took the time to see what some of the Somali establishments in MSP had to offer. Might be one of the best Somali restaurants in Minnesota Ordered the 2 sports entree that came with 3 choices of meat and ALOT of rice. Enough to feed at-least 3 people. Came here for lunch with coworkers whom recommended the place. FYI: the room is divided into 2 areas: the front is reserved for men, while the back is reserved for women and men whom want to join their partner, wife and or family. Ambience: clean, simple decor and various tables ranging from 4-12 people. Service: the waiter that we got appeared to not understand the full menu, there were a few items on the menu where he didn't know what they were made out of off. Luckily for us, one of my coworkers speak Somali. Food: ordered the lunch entree: braised goat, goat soup, salad, and collard-green. The portion are huggggeeeeeee. My plate could feed 2-3 people; I thought they made a mistake when my plate came. Braised goat: they must've cooked the goat ahead of time since it took less than 10minutes after we ordered for the foods to arrived. The goat was tender and moist to my surprise!!! Don't know what they did during the preparation stage, but the goat taste was not pronounced. I was caught off guard in a good way. This is good for those who want try out goat for the first time to get accumulated to the taste. My only complaint of the goat is that it needs a little more salt!!! Goat soup: a must get dish, enough said!!! Savory, full of depth and the goat flavor does not over powered the dish. Just get a gallon and you will be good. The collard-green: you will taste the cumin and cardamom instantly. Well seasoned. When you dipped the mild seasoned goat meat with the collard green, it makes perfect sense!!! I was given the complete opposite of my order after driving 20 minutes to my destination, I gave them a call to be given an explanation for what's happened, I was told food is food, I did NOT get aN APOLOGY , I did NOT receive any sort of response from them on how they're going to handle this situation now I'm out $27 of my hard earned money, stuck with food I didn't order. The Somali community is such an integral part of the Twin Cities in Minnesota, so when I visited Minneapolis for the first time, I definitely wanted to try some Somali food. I ended up visiting Quruxlow and enjoyed the overall experience. As soon as we walked in, we were seated in a large booth. Our waiter came over and verbally shared the menu in Somali with my friend who speaks Somali. I think he assumed that we were both Somali and wanted us to feel comfortable and that's fine. She ended up ordering a "sport" dish, one where you choose between rice or pasta as a base and then three meat choices plus some salad on top. We ordered rice with chicken, beef, and goat. Before our food arrived, our waiter brought out 2 small dishes of a thick, red hot sauce, ranch dressing, and a pitcher of mango juice and some cups, as well as some bananas, which many Somalis traditionally eat with the majority of their meals. As we waited for our food, the customers around us also seemed to share their food, enjoying the restaurant's family style dining. Our own food quickly arrived after about 10 minutes and we started to dig in. The rice was flavorful and seemingly seasoned with chicken stock and cardamom. Ive only tried goat meat twice before and it isn't a favorite of mine, but this meat was cooked in a stew like sauce and easily fell off the bone. It was also flavorful and reminded me of braised lamb. The chicken and steak were also well seasoned and tasty. We enjoyed sharing the rice, salad, and meat dish with some green hot sauce on top (there was a bottle of this sauce already on the table). I even tried the food with a bite of banana, which added a nice, slightly sweet and creamy contrast to the rice and chicken. As we ate, our waiter came back to ask us how the food was and another very friendly employee came out and talked to me about Somali food and the community in Minnesota. Ultimately, we enjoyed a non-expensive, filling, and delicious Somali meal. I did visit the restaurant with a friend who is familiar with the restaurant and she speaks Somali, which was great. It would have been an even better experience if there was an actual menu and if the waiters initially shared more information about the food and restaurant, since it was my first time visiting. This is the best Somali food in the twin cities hands down! We had the 'sports' plate which had a variety of meats with rice. The meats (chicken steak, beef suqaar and goat meat) were tender and perfectly seasoned. The rice was perfectly spiced and aromatic. We also had a jug of mango juice and banana with our food which was a nice Somali touch. I have gone back many times with family and out of town guests. Highly recommend! read more

Stepping into Quruxlow reminded me so much of the time I spent living in the Middle East - I was the only uncovered woman in the place, the dining rooms were separated, and of course, the hospitality was lovely. For some reason, I assumed Somali cuisine was vegetarian heavy but I was very wrong. The menu items are basically all meat based, however, our server was very accommodating with trying to help me find something that I could (and wanted to) eat. I rarely eat fish but I did end up getting fried tilapia and it was spectacular. The rest of my meal included seasoned rice, which has an excellent reheat value! We were surprised that complimentary bananas were given at the beginning of the meal. At least I think they were complimentary... the bill we received was very reasonable but did not list out a detailed price breakdown. I will definitely be back to Quruxlow! read more

My Somali co-worker told me this is the best Somali food around, and ended up treating my to lunch here, for my birthday, on my first visit to Quruxlow. I'm definitely a fan of the food, but for a non-Somali customer, this place can be a little confusing. As another person mentioned, they have some cultural seating rules. If you are a single woman, or group of all women and/or children, the seating is straight to the back. If you are a single man or a group of all men, the seating is to the right. If you are a male and female together, you can sit anywhere. The menu is also kind of difficult to navigate if you're not familiar with Somali food. My Somali coworker explained to me what each thing is, because although the menu is in English, it doesn't give a description of the food. The service is also a little abnormal for what Americans are used to. You have to kind of flag the people down when you need to order, and pay, otherwise you might be sitting there for a while. The people are, however, friendly. Finally, Be aware that on Friday afternoons they close for a few hours for prayer. I think it's between 12:30PM and 3:30PM. With all of that being said, if you are willing to navigate the adventure of the cultural differences, you will enjoy Quruxlow. The food is super tasty, and the portions are HUGE. My favorite thing on the menu is the Chicken sukar, which is bite-sized pieces of chicken breast in some kind of spice marinade. It's yummy, and comes with a giant plate of rice. And of course, don't forget to order some sambusas-- they are to die for. Last heads up, your meal comes with a banana, which is intended to be eaten with the meal. Personally, I would advise against ever eating at this place. They offer horrible service. The fact that the food takes time is one of the reasons you shouldn't eat there. It's so big, they gave us a drink we didn't want, and the table and facilities are filthy. The chairs are old, and the employee was extremely rude when I asked why we had to pay for the drink we didn't want. I informed them that we didn't want this particular beverage, so we had to pay for another. It's a stupid restaurant because the chicken alone cost $20. Went here with my friends, when I was visiting from California. This was my first time at a Somali restaurant, I was impressed by the inside of the restaurant, it was quite nicely decorated. I Would not have known what to order without them. They ordered everything (being that I am Filipino and only Somali people go here) But we decided to get 2 huge plates and share with the five of us. We ordered Somali rice for one plate and Somali pasta on the other one, with different kinds of meat on both plates. The food came out pretty quick well within 10 minutes and was very delicious. We also ordered 2 jugs of mango juice and that was very tasty as well. Definitely a must to get the mango juice. Somali people love mango juice and I see why. One thing I do have to say is that the service here is pretty bad. There was 5 of us and 3 plates were given, plus 4 spoons and 2 forks. Barely any napkins. We asked for a special Somali dessert and the waiter gave attitude. But my friends said that's how Somali restaurants are, especially in Minnesota. I've been meaning to try this place for a while. A place with its own parking lot on Lake Street is always an attractive option, and even better if it's an unusual name. The food is the best Somali food I've had so far (4 stars), but the overall experience was bewildering for us (2 stars). First, the food. The menu had minimal descriptions with several mysterious terms that yielded no hits on Google searches. Our server helped us as well as he could, with a gracious smile and limited English. It helped that the "lunch" menu was served until 7. I ordered a fried chicken cutlet entree with spaghetti. My husband ordered an unbreaded chicken dish with soup and muffo (a fried bread). Both entrees came with iceberg lettuce salads, bananas, and a pitcher of mango juice (for the two of us ) for $12/person. The chicken was very good--crisp without being oily, and nicely seasoned and served with fried vegetables. The spaghetti had a pepper kick, which was a nice surprise. The iceberg lettuce salad was fresh with a creamy dressing. I liked my husband's soup. It tasted like a beef broth, and reminded me of alphabet soups of my childhood. My husband's chicken dish was also good. The chicken was served with a green sauce that reminded me of Indian saag. Unqualified thumbs up for the food. The experience overall was a bit chaotic, unfortunately. The parking lot was pure chaos. All the pandemonium and car traffic of a larger parking lot crammed into a small space with one exit mysteriously marked off with yellow caution tape. On the way out, a young woman cussed out another driver in English. It's probably best to skip the parking lot and park on the side streets. Inside it was a little calmer. The interior was beautiful, with a tasteful fake aquarium, sparkling chandeliers, and high-backed chairs that made you feel like royalty. The entry foyer was crammed with people waiting for their takeout orders and chatting. There seemed to be enough seating to accommodate at least two wedding banquets at once. We were at a loss as to what to do--there was no host station, no sign indicating whether or not we were supposed to seat ourselves, order at the register before sitting down, etc. The staff picked up our clueless vibes before too long, and so we got seated at a table facing a big television. The server seemed surprised we needed a menu. I guess the regulars come in already knowing what they want. It took me a while to find the ladies' room. I was surprised (but really shouldn't have been) to see an area for ablutions. That made the space more cluttered than average, but serviceable. Our takeaway: good food, dashes of surprises for those not in the know (a knowledge of Somali food, language, and restaurant customs would make for a smoother experience). We were a bit unnerved by the police cameras in the neighborhood (not the fault of the restaurant owners, of course). Were the cameras protecting the community or monitoring it? In terms of foot traffic, this Somali restaurant is the busiest I've seen, and that speaks well for the business. read more

After trying what I think it all of the major Somali restaurants in the Twin Cites, I have to say that Qoraxlow is my favorite. The prices are lower, and the quality of the food is higher. Some of my Somali friends brought me here my first time, and we sampled a good portion of the food. I like the simplicity of the meats. The chicken was my favorite. The rice is magical. It is the most flavorful rice I've ever had. My friend showed me how she eats it, with a a chopped up banana, and it was delicious. I have to eat the rice like this now. I got the spaghetti, just to try it, but I didn't really care for it. Things to know: -The seating is separated by single men and families. Men and women can sit together in the family section, but men can't sit there alone. Women shouldn't sit in the single men's section. They don't really expect non-Somali people to know the rules, but it's polite to try and stick to this. -The pitchers of drink are sweet but kind of addicting. I'd say that Qoraxlow is the least-approachable Somali restaurant in Minneapolis, but it's clean and the waiter was friendly. And the food is worth it. We weren't familiar with Somali food so I can see how the menu could seem a little ambiguous. A kind samaritan saw us frantically looking up dishes on Google and came over to sit with us and helped explain the food.
