I did like how they placed the flower right in the center, which made it look nice at first glance, but the overall quality was a bit questionable once you got into it. The freshness of the sushi was not really there. Tuna looked discolored, and the rolls felt pretty loosely wrapped, almost like whoever made them was ready to call it a day. It just did not feel like much care was put into it. If I could turn back time, I probably would have just cooked something simple at home instead. The sashimi, sushi, dons, and green salad were pretty good. But the bento boxes - not so much. I had the Sashimi and Torched Sushi Combo, which consisted of salmon, tuna, and surf clam sashimi (hokkigai), and 3 types of torched sushi (salmon, squid, and scallops). The torched sushi were REALLY good - very flavourful with just the right amount of rice. In addition to the combo, I ordered the Green Salad (with dressing on the side), which came as a medium-sized bowl of fresh leafy greens and cucumber. Unagi Don was good too. It came with diced up tamago (eggs) beneath the unagi. Salmon Bento Box looked terrible (glad it wasn't my order). The salmon looked fried, oily, and covered with a very thick layer of teriyaki sauce (bound to be sweet). It came with a few pieces of deep-fried gyoza and salmon hand roll, where you get to assemble it yourself with a wide sheet of dried seaweed. The hand roll was probably the only good thing in that bento box. There was no salad or veggie whatsover (which is typically part of most bento boxes at other places). Every main item order came with miso soup, which contained a bit of seaweed and tofu. The interior of the restaurant wasn't that big, but it was nice and cozy. We have been here a few times for take out and dine in. TAKE-OUT: When you order takeout you are in for a treat. The packaging is state of the art and the sushi is delivered in fancy black boxes with cutouts for the sushi to be placed in the box and a special cutout for the soya sauce and ginger. The boxes were super fancy and made us feel like we got a fancy experience. When we ordered takeout the sushi we received was fantastic. I thought the aburi sushi was really good and I was happy with my order. DINE-IN: We recently dined in and the experience was ok. The restaurant is very average and basic. It's kind of a hole in the wall with a few tables. We were offered water but they don't have any tea to serve guests. For me, sushi and tea go hand in hand. This time I ordered the Torch Sushi and Roll Combo B with a few substitutes to make the dish gluten and dairy free. The salmon didn't taste too fresh and the aburi wasn't presented warm so it didn't melt in my mouth. The salmon just didn't taste like butter and melt into my mouth like the one at my go to restaurant. The dine in experience was much worse than our takeout experience. I'm not sure I would go back for dine in again and next time I'm craving aburi I might venture to my go to restaurant or another location to try another companies. My partner ordered the deluxe rolls combo a and he said it was good. He was also disappointed that we couldn't get any tea and we both found the prices to be higher than our go-to locations. Found out about this place through lovely Tiktok. They had these giant sushi trays and as much as I'd love to devour it myself, it might be good to try out the sushi before inviting some guests along to try it with me. I did an UberEats order instead and I wish I took a picture of the packaging! It's definitely one of the more aesthetic packages I've received on a sushi order which made it feel like I was getting really high value for the price I paid. This has been a place on my list to try ever since it's opened and I finally got around to trying it today with my cousin. We walked in around 7 pm when there was barely any tables. No one greeted us or said hi or anything so we just proceeded to sit down at a table. The hostess/waitress proceeded to come with menus and told us we can sit in the window seat instead, which we ended up moving to. While looking at the menu, I thought it was strange that she never offered us water or anything like that or even asked if we wanted anything to drink ... well it turns out that you need to BUY water...in a water bottle. Which shocks me in this day and age that water isn't offered? Or she didn't even bother to ask if we wanted anything to drink. We ordered the sushi aburi combo A and deluxe sushi combo B. Both of these were mediocre at the most. Presentation wise, it definitely looks nice. However would I crave this place so much to come back again to eat their sushi? Probably not. It did not stand out at all to me. The rolls were mainly stuffed with cucumber with no other toppings inside which is disappointing to say the least. I've been here several times now for dine-in & also for picking up take out food. I'm happy with their food. Though if I were to nitpick I would say their rolls fall apart easily. I don't mind that though since all the food I've tried here is good. I'm slowly trying all the items on their menu that I can eat. LOL. It's very close to my workplace so it's very convenient for me. The 3 piece aburi is the most expensive per piece so I advise you avoid that. It's better to get a combo or the oshi 8 pieces. Someday I will order the party tray to share with some people. Another thing I will nitpick on, is the use of non-edible flowers. These shouldn't be put with food. I haven't had any issues so far eating the food that's presented with the flowers. However someone more sensitive than me might have issues. I read someone's review complaining that the torched sushi wasn't hot. Maybe I'm going to the wrong torched sushi places because I have never had torched sushi that was hot. Even Project Fish who in my opinion has great torched sushi has never given me hot torched sushi. I've actually read on a chef website that true torched sushi (aburi) is only torched on top and raw underneath. Anyway, that's just my opinion. read more

Quite impressed! Passed by here a few times and finally got the chance to try it. We ordered via phone at 6:15 for 7:30 pick up. Everything was ready on time. We got the Party Tray A ($55.95) which has 45 pieces. We picked this one because we wanted the aburi sushi. The sushi was well made and tasted soft and fresh. Don't know which was our favourite because they were all so good! They don't have a site, so we had to see their menu via Google. They give 10% off for paying by cash. I have ordered from them a couple times, and I do find their dishes decent, especially with the 30% discount card that they were giving during opening. But they were very inconsistent about the usage and they lied to my face about it. First of all, the card they were giving out had a place to write the expiration date, but they didn't write anything. So I have used it in September. And at the end of September, I have been refused to use the card but my friend was able to use it without any problem on the same day. When I called, they told me that it ended in July even though I have called her out on the lie. My other friend also told me that when they went to use it, they were denied flat out while being informed that the card expired in July even after mentioning that I have used it a week ago. I get that they messed up by not writing the expiration date, but at least be transparent about it without lying. There were some other inconsistencies with the dishes (varying fish slices depending on the day, mushy rice, etc. . .) so it's a shame that I will not be revisiting this place that has potential. read more

I came to R Sushi on a recommendation from a colleague who lives in the area. I came with my 2 year old daughter so I had to order quickly before Miss Hissy Fit unleashed her wrath. I went with the R chirashi and order a gyoza and avocado and sweet potato roll for her. The chirashi was beautiful with some really fatty and generous sized pieces of salmon, octopus, tuna, and surf clam. The rice was well seasoned. This is only based on my takeout experience. I was very impressed with the packaging and presentation. Each sushi roll /set was wrapped nicely and the boxes were sealed with a sticker with their brand. When a restaurant opens with a bold 50% OFF + a set of Salmon extras for the first 100 customers per day from June 14th to 21st, one would think the owner(s) of this establishment would have thought it through. In this case the promotion was above and beyond what the restaurant was able to handle. I had been there on the first day of the promotion and it was okay; the sushi wasn't the best, but given the benefit of the doubt it was their very first day. By mid week last week they would start off each day at 11:30 AM with at least 20-30 people lined up outside before opening. These customers should have gotten the promotion. Instead, the restaurant took online and delivery service orders before those who waited for hours. Within an hour of opening, the customers who waited were all told they would not receive their orders until 5:00 PM...they'd have to come back to pick it up then. Knowing how busy it must have been, why did the management not prepare or at least address those waiting? Today, the last day of the advertised promotion, a waitress (still not management) announced at opening that the promotion is over and the last day was on the 20th and not the 21st as advertised. This is illegal, and inappropriate business practice. If this is the way this restaurant conducts its affairs, then as a paying consumer I want nothing to do with them and advise others to be aware. In the end, this restaurant will have to turn things around in a big way to regain the trust they lost in their first week of business. read more

While presentation of food was 5/5, sushi on pressed sushi were so thin that i couldn't even tell if I was eating box sushi with raw fish on the top or just fish flavour California roll drenched in sauce. Rolls and sushis were bit better but still could not taste much of fish due to over dose of sauce and torching. It was like they try their best to cut corner with box sushi by thinning fish and over done other rolls and sushi with sauce and torching to cover up quality of fish. To be fair this is bit of overdue review as I was pretty disappointed and stop writing it in mid of review during last year (it's feb now). So things might have changed a bit judging by other people's pictures, but I think I will continue the search for best sushi place in North York than give this place another try any time soon. read more

I've only tried their party tray A since their grand opening. From take out to dining in, the party tray A is really delicious. Great selection of sushi and great for sharing with 2-4. We recently had the worst experience at this place. This is a Japanese food restaurant, which ought to have fresh food. But they served the rancid tofu in miso soup. And already ate one. Even the server affirmed that tofu was rotten but they just changed to another soup and told me " no worries, this miso without tofu"( photo below) At that time, I just want to throw up. They served rotten food but I didn't feel any apology from them. We ordered Bara Chirashi with Uni and combo B. You can see that the top of Uni and the under piece is different. The under Uni piece is disgusting, and I have to pay $55 for it. The rice is absolutely dry and hard. Finally, the bill for these 2 horrible dishes came to $72,21. I'm praying for my stomach. We placed the order online and received confirmation email. When we went to the store to pick up, they insisted that they did not receive it. We showed them the confirmation email, order confirmation page and even our credit card statement. They couldn't care less. We went home empty-handed and contacted credit card company immediately to file a complaint and dispute the charge. Hopefully we can get our money back.
