Service is friendly enough but they were running around and seemed to forget about us. Pay at the counter when you're done. The menu is split into starters, Zaika bowls, Zaika wraps, pita pocket, Zaika salad, kid's meals and a royal platter. The platter ($49.90 NZD) sounded tasty and a good way to share. - Wedges ($5.00 NZD) - this was actually a good portion size. Decent seasoning and most of the wedges were crispy. The sauce/aioli was neutral but tasteless. - Grilled fish Zaika bowl ($17.50 NZD) - we decided to share a bowl and asked for half Arabic rice and half couscous. For the salads, we picked corn salsa, grilled vege and carrots & beet. Sauce was hummus but it was different than what we expected. They mixed it in with the rest of the ingredients. We also got our bowl medium spicy but it was only in the tiniest manner. Fish was perfectly grilled but it was soooooo salty. Sad because it ruined the flavours. Regardless, it's a strategically located lunch spot on ones way down the rugged, tempestuous West Coast. They were shamelessly open on Good Friday, but with the 15% surcharge in full effect, of course. We ordered a tasting flight of 3 beers (200mL's at 20 NZD) and some small bites. The Driftin IPA and West Coastin' IPA were solid with familiar hops (some American) though the Wayfarer Pilsner's crispness sums up my new appreciation for NZ pilsners. For food, we had the fried Calamari and the Venison sliders, the latter being quite yummy, the toasted up brioche buns and venison medallions smothered in chili jam and aioli making for an enjoyable mix of sweet and salty. The lamb was good - although came out borderline cool in the center, more rare than medium rare (although this was fine with me). Good although mild flavor, and I liked the spice rub. The salad was a little boring - there wasn't a ton of feta, but it was a nice accompaniment. There was also a little mashed potato croquette thing - a nice little crust on it, quite tasty. We also ordered a side of the cucumber fennel salad, which was exceptionally boring. Needed salt, vinegar, something, anything to bring out a little flavor. There was also very little fennel - I was imagining sliced or cubed fennel bulb, but it was really just fennel greens. But all in all, quite tasty meal. Others had the filo chicken - sort of a chicken roll with bacon, peppers, cream cheese, and almonds, wrapped in filo dough. This was really excellent, tender and moist, good balance of flavors, with a great kind of yogurt dressing. The location is pretty picturesque - not quite overlooking the ocean, but the sunset was really lovely on a nice weather day. The hotel/restaurant are set on some almost pasture land, with a scenic little water wheel...just kind of an idyllic setting.
