Monteith's Brewing Co - Just Brew It.

Monteith's in THE original West Coast brewery, a classic worth visiting in Greymouth. Despite this…read more-- and the inclusion of a seemingly delightful brewery tour through their expansive brewery area with many a shiny stainless steel tank -- they apparently don't even brew on-site anymore. Regardless, it's a strategically located lunch spot on ones way down the rugged, tempestuous West Coast. They were shamelessly open on Good Friday, but with the 15% surcharge in full effect, of course. We ordered a tasting flight of 3 beers (200mL's at 20 NZD) and some small bites. The Driftin IPA and West Coastin' IPA were solid with familiar hops (some American) though the Wayfarer Pilsner's crispness sums up my new appreciation for NZ pilsners. For food, we had the fried Calamari and the Venison sliders, the latter being quite yummy, the toasted up brioche buns and venison medallions smothered in chili jam and aioli making for an enjoyable mix of sweet and salty. Seating was super comfortable in the truly massive restaurant. Many a friendly worker to service you on your lunch stopover.

Decided on this place by their recent reviews. When you…read morewalk in the door there are signs that tell you to go to the bar to place your order and to first find a table where you will be seated and give them the table # so they will know where to bring your food. If you need anything you have to go to the bar to get it. They do not have servers walking around. We orders a couple of Local lady's and a prawn appetizer. For the mains we ordered Fish and Chips and the Warm Thai Chicken Salad. The salad had great texture but the mayo and avocado was really bland. Perhaps ordering a different dressing would help. Other than that we enjoyed our food. We talk to locals that were sitting at our table. It was great!

We came to the Raceway Carvery (inside the Union Hotel) to check it out. We weren't sure what to…read moreexpect as little information is available on the web. There is a sign on the outside of the Union Hotel to indicate price ranges, but as it turns out its actually cheaper than that sign indicates. The building is an old style hotel. You enter first to the bar area. Keep walking and you enter the carvery. I would describe it was a no nonsense old fashioned comfort food spot. The menu is on the wall above a counter where they take your order. They have roasts (generally beef), lamb, fish, and schnitzel with 2 prices for smaller (about $15) and regular portion sizes. For some reason under their lighter meals, they have pork chops. Anyway, read the whole thing before deciding. Hot soup, vegetable with rice the day we were there, comes with getting a meal $15 NZ or more. You get a choice of vegetables or salad and chips. We ordered smaller portions of fish with veg and beef roast with veg. You're given a numbered order tag. You are to watch for your number to come up. Then you go pick up your meal. You get drinks back out at the bar. Pick up your silverware and napkins on the way to your table. Our meals arrived and they were just the right portion size for us. The veg consisted of steamed carrots, corn, and cabbage and a hunk of roasted kabocha squash. It was a nice change from chips. The fish was fried flavorful firm white fish. The beef was tender with a nice gravy. It was obvious that this was a local place. There were families with children eating there that greeted friends. There were young travelers that were staying at the hostel and eating inexpensively there. It's just good food served simply without frills. There is dessert. Their dessert board listed cheesecake, pavlova, fresh boysenberries with cream, and ice cream. We went for ice cream. A scoop of Tip Top ice cream topped with a big dollop of fresh homemade whipped cream cost a whopping $1 NZ. That is the best deal EVER. If they have boysenberry ice cream, get it. It is delicious. The serving ladies said they are open 7 days for lunch and dinner.

Very nice restaurant up above Hokitika a bit. Seems to be off the beaten path, given that it's not…read morein Yelp (until I wrote this review) and is also outside of the city proper. We we advised to visit by the owner of our Airbnb, and we made reservations (that didn't seem necessary, it was just us and one other party) before visiting. Your mileage may vary on reservations. Their menu is small - only about 5 mains. They have quite a few accolades on their website regarding their beef and lamb offerings, so I went with the lamb fillets, which were three smaller pieces of lamb, ordered medium rare, rubbed with some middle eastern spices and served over some greens and cumin infused feta. The lamb was good - although came out borderline cool in the center, more rare than medium rare (although this was fine with me). Good although mild flavor, and I liked the spice rub. The salad was a little boring - there wasn't a ton of feta, but it was a nice accompaniment. There was also a little mashed potato croquette thing - a nice little crust on it, quite tasty. We also ordered a side of the cucumber fennel salad, which was exceptionally boring. Needed salt, vinegar, something, anything to bring out a little flavor. There was also very little fennel - I was imagining sliced or cubed fennel bulb, but it was really just fennel greens. But all in all, quite tasty meal. Others had the filo chicken - sort of a chicken roll with bacon, peppers, cream cheese, and almonds, wrapped in filo dough. This was really excellent, tender and moist, good balance of flavors, with a great kind of yogurt dressing. The location is pretty picturesque - not quite overlooking the ocean, but the sunset was really lovely on a nice weather day. The hotel/restaurant are set on some almost pasture land, with a scenic little water wheel...just kind of an idyllic setting. I would recommend this to anyone in the area looking for a little nicer meal than some of the spots in town (not that there's anything really wrong with what I had from restaurants in town).
