Poe Mill is a pretty sweet spot if you like street style skating or bmxing. It has a good bit of…read moreroom, quite a few different features, and its (usually) fairly chill. Lots to do for all skill levels. You can easily spend a whole afternoon here working on tricks or cruising around. Definitely a shred at your won risk place. No lifeguard on duty. Probably not the best place to drop your kids or tweens off unattented for hours though.

This little community center seems to have a lot to offer: - The playground is a lot of fun- both our kids, ages 4 & 7, loved it! A well-kept wooden playground with swings (3 regular & 1 baby swing), a seesaw, a tire swing, and a big plastic sea monster for climbing. - Short paved walking loop with some benches, picnic tables and grill, and 1 of those little exercise stops and a creek flowing by (great for kids to splash around in!) - Large grassy field - Basketball court (half court) - Community garden - Large picnic table area with covered pavilion - Leashed dogs allowed (please pick up after them - there are poop bags along the sidewalk) The community center appears to be closed right now and I haven't checked out the website yet but there's a board with some info by the playground. It seems like they offer yoga classes (Free maybe? Says "donations accepted"), there's an ad for reiki healing, and a whole calendar of events for children and adults. This center definitely seems to run on donations and volunteers. We were happy to contribute to the painted metal donation post by the playground. Peaceful, safe, beautiful park areas like this are hard to find these days. We're passing through, as we're just frequent vacationers to the area, but I hope the community keeps up this little local gem!

Cesspool of Sin! This town is so much fun- so many…read moreexcesses, it's such a bohemian paradise! This mountainous western North Carolina town is a great time. They seem to have more breweries per capita than anywhere else I've ever seen! Seriously, there's a brewery district where they just crank out beer after beer after beer. I don't quite understand what makes Asheville such a brewery friendly town- maybe it's the water from the French Broad River. This is also a town of art! There's so many galleries and public works of art here. People are inclined to let their hair grow wild and paint on whatever surface they need to. This is also a town of excess- the Biltmore shows how capitalism gone wrong can put so much wealth and resources in the hands of few, while there's people starving outside the McDonalds. I really enjoyed my time in Asheville- the arts scene was killer, and the breweries just made the place even better!

They have a three block two ledges a bunch of vert stuff and a handrail plus there's a lot of street spots around and if you're feeling hungry right behind the warehouse is a brewery and a bar arcade if you're done skating for the day, you can head to those spots not only that the skate park has a skate shop in it. I highly recommend this spot if you're looking for a day trip it's only about an hour and a half from Charlotte or if you're local in the area come and try this spot out.

The skate park is located inside the larger Stanford Park but deserving a business of its own, this is a big space with all sorts of loops and rails and open space for the skateboarders to do their thing. The park has a chain link fence all around (open today) plus a concession stand (closed today) and a few sets of bleachers for the spectators. As for the rest of the park, there are baseball and soccer fields, playgrounds, and more. I was focused on the skate park and not the rest of the park. I only just caught them at the end of the day, but the re-created fort was a window back into late colonial history when the nearby Cumberland gap was the route by which what is now Kentucky was settled. I chatted up some historical reenactors briefly. The mountainside aesthetics are majestic. The range of places that are under Virginia State Park control are impressive. Even as a current southwestern Virginian myself, this is at least four hours away. It is so far into the tiny little tail of Virginia. But I had driven by this area before and not stopped and I am glad I found the opportunity to do so.

During the warmer months, historic re-enactors demonstrate how things may have looked back in the days when settlers were gathering to attempt passage through the Cumberland Gap (nearby!) and settle the Midwest. The old fort even allows you to enter the buildings and look around! There were animals on site, and we even saw a baby bison (from a safe viewing distance along a trail of course, they aren't free range!) I was really impressed with the thatched roof in the Native American settlement, and if you can, start at the Daniel Boone Wilderness Center, then drive here to follow the historic path to the west!

The equipment looks a little outdated but the kids had fun. My oldest liked playing on the basketball court while the youngest mostly played in the sand.
