Well, I have never played golf there. But I really liked the design of the course by Donald Ross.

Helene washed out the front nine so for now, you play the back nine twice. For what it's worth, the back nine has always been more interesting/fun than the front, with the Donald Ross design really shining here. Green condition is quite good. Prices are a bit high for a municipal course, and membership rates are in my opinion exorbitant. Fun fact: A temporary frisbee golf course has been established on the front nine while repairs continue. read more

The back nine was great I think if they have the front nine that's not playable why not put a driving range somewhere it would be nice

Beautiful course and very challenging if you are not used to hills. Had a blast, although I did lose quite a few balls to the woods. Certainly one of the prettier and well kept municipal courses I have played, and I cannot wait to come back when the front 9 have been restored. read more

It's been 11 years since I wrote the first review for this golf course. It's a part of Western North Carolina History. It was designed by the famed Donald Ross who has designed over 400 courses. He is best know as the designer of Pinehurst #2. This course is a test for even the best golfer. The front 9 is wide-open and flat with little trouble. There is no water and only a few bunkers. The greens are large and flat and in good shape over this July 4th holiday. The back 9 is a different animal. On #10 you get the feel right away that you're in for a roller coaster ride. I told the guys I was playing with that it was like the Grand Canyon. No matter where you hit it, the ball is going to roll to the center of a narrow fairway. It's muni, so it's not in top shape. It get's a lot of play and is very popular. At $28 bucks to play and ride 18 holes, it's a deal for Western North Carolina golf and you can say you played a Donald Ross course. read more

Felt very unwelcomed by staff. Explained it was our first time there and given no info about where to go. Front desk young man just handed keys to cart and stated "map is on back of score card." Started to first hole and stopped because we had only one set of clubs. Explained to gentleman my teenage son is just starting out so we just placed a few clubs of his in my bag. Gentleman said it's policy all players have a bag so we were forced to rent clubs. I'd expect muni to be less classist. Had I known this rule I would've brought my husbands bag but it's not stated anywhere when booking tee time. First 9 holes were nice. Back 9 not. On course lots of construction and workers blocking the path. Two stars for pleasant staff at lunch counter. We won't be back. read more

I could not be more impressed with my experience today. From the operations side (friendly host in restaurant, helpful pro, nice starter) to the conditions of the course Asheville Golf Course was fantastic. The Historic Donald Ross was a blast to play. With two completely contrasting 9 holes the front nine is forgiving with wider fairways where the back is tighter , mountain golf and true Donald Ross style. Go play! Affordable and fun! read more

I never give 1 star reviews! I also waited 24 hours to write this review after I played Asheville GC. I first want to acknowledge that the staff at Asheville GC were friendly, helpful and professional. This is a wonderfully designed course and literally the worse maintained course I have ever played in my 55 years of golf experience. I play public courses.. I am not a member of a country club. Weeds account for 60% of the fairway grasses. The rough is a laboratory to grow the most invasive weeds. The sand traps are an oxymoron with no sand and little trapping capability. A well hit ball runs in and runs out. The greens are passable at a 2 star level. There are countless fairway and areas of play that cannot be cut bc the structure of the course has washed away. The cart paths have more potholes than an unpaved road up north. There are incredible specimen plants around the course that have been overwhelmed by invasive species. Be very careful of in the ground bee hives in the rough and the fairways. Take your epipen if you are allergic to bee stings. Donald Ross designed a pretty good course. It requires shotmaking and targeted play. The authorities have done an abysmal job in maintaining the course. It is shameful to have let this course deteriorate to this state of ill repair. I offer this review with the purpose of helping those who regularly play it enjoy future rounds. Wishing that those accountable for its current state will do better. read more

Good tract for this Asheville muni course. Totally different 9 hole experiences. The front is realitevly flat, and the back is a challenging mountain layout. Fun & reasonably priced. read more

Asheville Municipal Golf Course is located on Fairway Drive near Highway 81 and down the road Highland Brewing Company. Designed in 1972 AMGC is fun and challenging. With over 3,200 yards on the front 9 holes you have ample opportunity to use your driver. The fairways are long and straight. There are few hazard and very little to obstruct your shot the the green. The tee box's are spacious and soft. A perfect place to showcase your driving skills. The green speed is medium and fairly flat. I only had the luxury to play the front 9 but I'm looking forward to returning and completing the course. read more

I gave this course 4 stars for what it could be. Tee boxes need work, sand traps need work greens are classic Donald Ross. This is a national treasure and should be treated as such. Green fees are super reasonable. Cheap way to worship at the altar of golf. Wish there was some way to make it perfect like it deserves. 10 11 and 12 are tough. read more

I frequent this golf course all the time during the summer months. They always have decent rates and the layout is impeccable. If you prefer the longer and flatter fairways then then front 9 is where you want to be. If you prefer more challenging terrain, then jump on the back 9 and test your skills! I prefer to golf all 18. Best of both worlds! read more
