For a two person entrée, the quantity is on the light side. However, it is just enough if both people are light eaters. My sister picked out radius for a family dinner to celebrate my birthday and it was a great time with an awesome menu of local and quality ingredients. Yes the price is pretty high but I love supporting local (and my bday coincided with the Ontario Big Spend, to help stimulate local buying in COVID). Everything comes out looking absolutely gorgeous on stoneware and fun plating styles that flow right with the atmosphere. The atmosphere is very hipster chic and all the staff is very professional and knowledgeable. Also fantastic COVID protocol and safety while we were there. I think our waiter could have brought a little more energy but he was great overall! Started with some fun drinks and loved that the wine menu was at least half local selection! Came quick as well with pitchers of plain water and sparkling water. Started with calamari and Burrata platter. Calamari was delicious and came with both aioli and seafood sauce with arugula and lemon, loved it! Large pieces and perfectly cooked. The Burrata stole the show with a huge fresh ball over crisp and sweet cantaloupe and prosciutto with hot peppers and delicious fresh basil.... could have definitely ate that whole plate as my dinner. Truffle fries to share: fantastic shoestring cut with Parmesan and truffle with fresh scallions, crispy goodness! Beet salad: beautiful presentation and loaded with gorgeous beets, walnuts, roasted veggies and maple vinaigrette. Good earth power bowl: for the veggie lovers this one has it all! And is also pretty allergen friendly with greens, raw broccoli, vibrant purple cabbage, avocado, grapefruit, roasted crispy chickpeas, pine nuts, nutritional yeast, and toasted coconut flakes with lemon tahini dressing. I enjoyed this fresh and crisp bowl but I think it could have used more zing in the dressing. Pasta Special: thumb print pasta with salty venison sausages, sweet peppers, greens, salt/pepper and cheese. A tad salty but beautiful and fresh! Oysters: fresh and delicious with Parmesan and 3 sauces (hot, seafood, red wine vinegar) Cedar salmon: beautifully grilled cedar planked salmon with so much flavour from the maple bourbon glaze. Came with a tiny portion of veggies but the also a side, we choose the mashed potatoes which WERE DA BOMB! Could just eat those tbh.... Caesar salad: the most gorgeous! I didn't try but came with fresh crisp romaine, Parmesan crisps, crispy pork belly, poached egg, fresh croutons, and a full sardine to top it off! Dessert: no bake raspberry cheesecake, this was complimentary for the bday and we all split it. Delicious raspberry jam on light cheesecake filling with white chocolate and a thick graham crumb. I had the greatest displeasure of dining at Radius earlier tonight on Valentine's Day. I'm not one to complain about mediocre food (and certainly there was enough of that at Radius) nor the slow service (I wasted a full 2 hours there). Rather, I found myself on the receiving end of what can only be described as extremely predatory behaviour on the part of management. I specifically ordered an item knowing full well what the price was on their menu online which I accessed via the QR code on the table. Yet when the check came, I had been upcharged nearly twenty dollars. When I deigned to ask why, the server was kind enough to go check with her manager, and reported that that was apparently what the item costed on Valentine's. Without any indication ever anywhere of that, I find that absolutely pathetic. If you can get past the overcooked brussels, the uninspired cod and chips, and the embarrassing excuse for a charcuterie board (which apparently costs fifty dollars on Valentine's), may I suggest the Broccoli Bang Bang (which was actually our appetizer and the highlight of our meal) as you dine in what is otherwise a reasonably pleasant and intimate setting. read more

The place has two sides, one side is for dining and the other side with the bar turns into a nightclub equipped with DJ and some bouncers after 11pm. I came here for the food so let's begin. I did not have an appetizer as I felt like my 14$ Cosmo was enough for a starter for me. Originally, I had wanted to try the steak here but when I asked the waitress what it came with, she said nothing. You are paying 38$-120$(tomahawk steak) for just the meat, no veggies and potatoes, nothing. If you want a side of sauteed mushrooms or mashed potatoes, you will have to fork out 8$. I had the special pasta which was salmon atop of garlic sauce penne. It was okay, not amazing and nothing special. This was 30$. I don't mind paying that much if it was great, but like I said it was okay. I picked a dessert which was chocolate lava cake and it was really yummy and free since it was my birthday. I felt like this place was very pretentious, food is overpriced and not delicious. The staff didn't even look happy to be there. I would not go here again. read more

I had the braised beef rib with marrow bone. I was pleasantly surprised by the marrow bone itself, I thought there was going to be marrow in the meal. Two, possibly snotty, examples of the faux fancy: they have a wine list but our servers didn't know anything about it, they served a full-on marrow bone (awesome) but neither separated the marrow from the bone nor provided cutlery suitable to remove the marrow...they're trying to be fancier than they are which is unfortunate but not uncommon. Radius is a classic place for a dinner out when you're among friends! This place is one of the few nice restaurants in Hamilton that has enough space to accommodate larger groups! We made a reservation for 8 at 7pm and were promptly seated to a gorgeous table on the second floor. The server was very friendly and took our drinks orders immediately. I had the duck poutine which I felt was quite salty. My friends had a steak frites and a risotto which was delicious. The steak frites was perfectly cooked! The risotto took a long time. Overall I would say the food here is pretty good its a bit of a splurge with the higher prices they charge. I would love to come back for steak frites on a nicer occasion though. I believe the last time I've been here was in 2015, for a friend's birthday. I ordered the steak frites and I remember it being amazing - both food and the service. Considered as a "finer" restaurant in Hamilton, I think the prices are quite affordable and the portions are appropriate. (Similar to a Joey's) Now my friends and I came back again after finding out that the patio was bigger than most restaurants around the area. I loved the fact that the patio area was very spacious with cute areas in the back to lounge around (couches and small tables - ideal for getting drinks and getting comfortable) All of us ordered the smoked surf burger, which comes with truffle fries (YUMS), fried prawn and an onion ring on skewer (don't be fooled tho - we all thought the prawn would be inside the burger which persuaded us to get it), and a huge burger that has different toppings & spicy mayo, ma faaaav. Regardless, we all loved it!!! And we were very stuffed by the end. I would definitely recommend getting the smoked surf burger over the radius burger for a few extra dollars. read more

June 25/22, approx 6 pm my wife and I arrived at the Radius entrance, (we did not have a reservation) no one in front of us. Two young ladies at the entrance desk, one is on her cell phone. After approximately two minutes, the lady not on the phone, her first greeting has two words, "walk-in?" Now we wait to receive a second greeting while we assume the two ladies appear to be looking over the restaurant layout to see where they might seat us. The steak was tender, however burned on the outside. It took a very long time for drinks. For food. We ordered dessert based on recommendations from Emma - I ordered homemade ice cream - carrot cake, whiskey maple and Belgian chocolate. Others in our group ordered ice cream. Two folks ordered lava cake. After at least 20-25 minutes after we ordered dessert, Emma came over and said they were out of all the ice creams but chocolate and vanilla basically. Why didn't she know that and let us know earlier? They comped our desserts and apologized, but no management presence was around. We spent a lot of money. Brunch was good - eggs Benedict, huevos rancheros, all good and fairly consistent I had the crab and shrimp sandwich which had an odd flavour, I don't think the ingredients complimented the seafood in my opinion, nor did they use amazing ingredients, but not being picky it was still decent The fries that came with it were a tad salty and not to scare anyone but there was quite a significant piece of crab shell in my sandwich and I was quite alarmed when I bit into it. The decor was beautiful. And of course, I've been raving about this place and I hyped it up. Wow, did this place truly embarrass me. We ordered three appetizers to share. The ahi tuna, KFC, and goat cheese spring rolls. Three things we tried to order were "out". I don't really understand. They should tell us that these items were all out before we even ordered. That would've been nice. The food tasted good, especially the KFC and goat cheese spring rolls. The problem? Everything was served cold! Not just lukewarm. I'm not a picky person, but wow. The texture was off because everything was cold. It was like they forgot about our order sitting there and they were like, "Oh! Everything's okay. The customers won't even notice!" The server barely came by. We waited about 30-40 minutes for cold food. The best thing that we ate was probably the banana chocolate dessert thing. But that's it. I've not had a lot of restaurant experiences in Hamilton, but this was a really good one. Beautiful building, exposed brick and decor give it a great vibe. Apparently the building had been owned by a baron, there was a photo of him above the bar. Staff was super attentive, courteous. I was there with 2 other gentlemen for lunch. I had the radius burger, and I must say, it was the best burger I've had at a restaurant who's specialty wasn't explicitly burgers. The meat was so incredibly flavourful and well cooked that the aged cheddar and other toppings were really just a bonus (the way it should be). Even the side salad was delicious. The other gentlemen had the pasta special which featured fresh ricotta cheese, again, delicious. I'd definitely go again for sure. read more

Radius has been a great disappointment. My wife and I came to radius for a friends birthday dinner. We both quite enjoyed the atmosphere, it's pushing for a classy place but it is definitely far from. We ordered the intoxicated wings and steak and fries. The wings were inedible, comparable to eating wings at Denny's. I could only get through 3 wings before I gave up. My wife was very disappointed with her steak as well, no flavour, and they didn't even provide a proper knife to eat it with. Ultimately what's most disappointing about this restaurant is the price for the quality of the food, those wings were almost 20$ and that Steak around 30$, those prices are pushing for fine dining, and Radius definitely isn't, Far from. read more

Today, I came here for the second time. My first time was pleasant enough--Starbucks coffee (literally), but the cashier/server was pleasant and unassuming. It was nice as I'm new to Hamilton again and a bit shy about getting out lately. I've only been on the cafe side, but the decor is really special--exposed brick, textured ceiling, catchy art, great lighting. But--I don't give a shit about decor--I care about what I'm purchasing and how I'm treated. The coffee would taste ten times better if my "thank-you's" were acknowledged--3 of them, I'm pretty polite :) I have no problem with waiting for good coffee and good service and I recognize that, at the end of the day, the people serving me may be also having a bad day--it's all good. But I waited for approximately 10 minutes, alone, to be treated awkwardly and insignificantly. I probably wouldn't have even reviewed this place if someone had it in them to say "you're welcome". Is Radius beautiful? Yes. Is the coffee Starbucks with a little less personality? Yes. Would I come back based on the pretentious, unremarkable service I was "served" with today? No. This place has awesome potential--but if you're going to ignore me, at least offer me something I can only get at Radius. If I want Starbucks coffee, I'll go to Starbucks. Went there for a quiet dinner with my boyfriend....far from quiet when we had to yell over the obnoxious music coming from the bar. We couldn't hear our waitress and spent the rest of our dinner in silence because we couldn't hear each other. Our reservation was at 9pm, we did not expect to have to listen to dance music over a nice dinner. Would have given 5 stars based only on the food and service. I've been here three times now during my business travel. All three times the staff has been really slow, lazy and disinterested in providing adequate service. It seems to be more of a hangout for the staff to download their days with each other. I thought it was just me but now being the third time over a 2 year period it begins to be a trend. The food is okay but overpriced for what you get. The facility is just great and the reason behind most of the stars I gave. The beer and liquor selections are really good too. To me it's a management issue to straighten this group up and focus them to provide better service. It always baffles me that the service industry takes it easy on service when that is how they generate their profits. I refuse to tip 15-20% to someone who doesn't even ask me basic questions when I walk in the business. read more

I went in for breakfast with the family, wanting something different. The breakfast meals were kind of expensive for breakfast, $14 for baked eggs or eggs Benedict. Meals come with your eggs, hash browns and a watermelon slice. I asked for a side of toast, and received a $4 plain toasted English muffin. My 4 year old daughter wanted simple eggs and bacon, it wasn't on the menu but our waitress accommodated us. However, for eggs, bacon, an English muffin and a watermelon slice they charged us $19 (plus tax and tip)!! I accepted a refill on my coffee, and was charged $3 for brewed coffee and $3 for the refill on my bill. After tax and tip, breakfast was $100 for two adults and two kids. I asked the waitress about the bill, her response was "That's how my manager told me to charge." Overall, the food quality was good but the prices were out of control. It was 45 minutes between sitting down and receiving our meals, despite the lack of other customers; we walked into an empty restaurant and two other tables came in after us. Radius defines cool dining. I've been a proud customer since its heyday as a crazy elegant coffee shop. While I was always skeptical about its eventual transition into a restaurant, I can now officially say I'm back to feeling good about this spot. It's the atmosphere that does it for me mostly: the sprawling outdoor patio with stringed lights draped over top; the DJ pumpin' out tunes inside; the brick walls dropping that NYC vibe; even the grandiose bar. This place feels so big city in a truly authentic way. A few friends and I just ordered drinks, and they were great. I also ordered the hummus which was loaded up with garlic (yum) while my friend ordered the oysters. There was an awesome deal going until 9pm where every oyster was a dollar each. That actually brought us over to the spot versus going elsewhere. Thumbs down to the fact that even though he tried to order them right at 9pm as we were sitting down, the kitchen said no. That seems unnecessary and a little lazy. He ordered them anyhow and got them at $3 a pop. Verdict: nothing special. Overall, I still have to try the food as a part of a meal to write a complete review, but I'm just such a sucker for this atmosphere every time that I'm still giving Radius a solid four stars. read more

Out for a stroll towards downtown and thought to try this established restaurant on James. We should've kept walking. Lots of staff, but their disorganization left us and others waiting for service and for food. Three hostesses sit idly chatting at the end of the bar. Everyone, crazy as it may seem, goes behind the bar and mixes drinks. How does that work? Hummus arrived and the serving was minuscule. Waiter says it's overly generous! The grilled broccoli arrives way too early and so we sent it back. Sure enough, it came back ten minutes later dry and cool. The Grain Bowl was slathered in undefinable oil - yech. The Hali and Chips was good, but why salad and slaw on the side? Shame on owner and management. Never again..... read more

The drinks were mediocre, but after also having to wait another 20 minutes to PAY, I would definitely never return here. I have to agree with David V. I heard some good things about Radius but was incredibly disappointed by my first & certainly last visit. For the record: I'm not a complainer nor do I ever send food back (not that I did either at this visit), but my experience at this establishment made me join yelp to write this review. Firstly, when I placed a reservation all my information was taken down & I informed the staff member who I spoke to about the nature of our planned visit: My father's birthday. To which I was immediately informed that "We don't do any sort of free dessert or anything!?" (this should have been a sign of things to come). Baffled, as I was just letting her know that as we decided to try out Radius for a special occasion. So I responded with "OK?" & hung up. Upon entering, no one seemed to take notice of us until I prompted one of the servers that my party was here as per our reservation. There appeared to be some confusion but we were eventually seated. On to our drink orders: After requesting three separate beverages, we were told that none of them were available, to our dismay. To his credit the staff member serving us was great as we were offered a free drink as compensation for the lack of choice and delay in being seating/served. The food order: Much like the drinks my very first choice, which was the short ribs, was not available (surprise!?). I went with the West-Indian rice bowl with a side of chicken for an extra $5. In short, there wasn't anything West Indian about it. The food lacked any real flavour & for $28!?! I was really expecting more. I really tried enjoying it but gave up half way through. Two of my table mates ordered the burger & for $18 you'd expect a nice sized patty, but no. One patty was OK while the other was a slider at best! My table mate complained about the inconsistency in the burgers. Our server apologized and kindly comped 1/2 the price (only fitting considering it was 1/2 the size!). In closing, the drink selection was embarrassing as was the quality of the food. Extremely overpriced especially considering the quantity and (lack of) flavour. Our bill, without any drinks. was $125 (sans tip!) & that's even with the compensation. Do yourselves a favour: Save your money & go ANYWHERE else. I'd recommend any restaurant in Toronto considering these inflated prices (this is Hamilton not NYC!). No but seriously, walk down to James Street North and walk into any one of those restaurant/bars for a far superior experience.
