So we went here with a friend who reccomended this. It was wonderful. The food was amazing. We chose a few things and everything was tasty. My husband particularly liked the fried rice. We chose three dishes and that was plenty with leftovers. I am sure that the rest of the menu is great so have fun and try something new. Service was really good. The server was prompt and friendly and helpful when deciding dishes. The thing that lost the star was the atmosphere. It was really plain Jane. nothing that would distinguish it from a fast food joint. No interesting decorations or comfotable seating. However food was excellent. If you are going for environment and atmosphere, you may want to steer away. If you want delicious food, I highly recommend. I thoroughly enjoy XO fried rice! I went with my Asian friends who I let do all the ordering :-) Inside just looks and feels like any other Asian restaraunt. Service was super friendly. They also have pictures of all the popular dishes which helps the visual customers. I only tried the XO fried rice at all happy family restaurant so when my friends said this was comparable if not better, I had to try it. I will be back to try other dishes. I am a big fan of spicy dishes, so to my suprise the food was super tasty. As for accessibility, was not bad. Could use more parking, but there is enough to hold inside capacity. I came here recently for dinner and had a filling meal. It's located in a small strip mall and has a more hole in the wall type of vibe. Service was friendly and welcoming. There were hand sanitizers on a table near the front entrance and everyone was wearing masks. For food, we tried the: - Spicy seafood noodle soup: This was my fave dish and very flavourful. I quite enjoyed the spiciness - Black bean noodles (jajangmyun): Pretty standard dish at any Korean restaurant. Good but nothing extraordinary - Fried pork in fruit sauce: this was okay. The pork got a little soggy after awhile and it wasn't that crispy. Fruit tasted warm and soggy after awhile too and wasn't that good Overall it was a decent meal and the atmosphere was very homey. I love Korean food and whenever I get an invitation to go for Korean food, I never say no. So when I was invited to come here for dinner, I was quite excited! Especially since I have never tried this place before. When I first got here, I noticed that the restaurant was located in a very modest strip where you would not even suspect a Korean restaurant to be. I love finding places like these especially when the food is delicious! When I entered the restaurant, there was alot of Korean people seated. That to me was a very good sign. lol. Taking a look at the menu, I noticed that there was definitely a wide variety of traditional Korean dishes YUM. So we ordered the Nu Rung Ji tang Udong, which is a seafood, mixed vegetable noodle soup with rice cake. Then we ordered the Family Jajang dish which is a pan friend noodles with pork and dark soybean sauce. To add something spicey to our order we got the spicey deep fried squid. When the dishes came out I was so impressed with the portions. The bowls and plates were heaping with food!!! it definitely was good to feedall three of us. These dishes are for sure to share! Several of my friends swear by this place so I thought I'd give it a WHIRL. Decided on the Jap Chae and Kan Fung Gi and I made some dang good choices. Quite spicy but not too spicy and lots of chicken in the Kan Fun Gi. I kept the sauce and added it to rice later on which was a dish in itself. Actually the rice with the sauce from the Kan Fung Gi was so tasty that I may just make rice at home next time instead of getting the Jap Chae, but the Jap Chae was still very very good. This was an impromptu visit on a Friday evening. We stopped by around 6pm and was happy to see 2 tables that were available. The restaurant was not small, maybe about 15 tables of 4 or so? The restaurant was not anything fancy but it was clean and comfortable chairs. I am always on the lookout to try a new Korean place in town and even better when it's on the south side. They are also about a few blocks from Southgate Mall. I ordered the Jjam Bbong, a spicy seafood noodle soup for $14, I was very pleased with the portion size of noodles, 2 mussels, shrimp and 3 crab legs. I find that I take heat quite well but man this dish took my breath away! It was full of flavor and very spicy (the good kind). I think the next time I come back, I will take a group of 4 at least to sample all the other tasty things on the menu. Good seafood Jjamppong! They put lots of seafood even including a whole crab. We also had a basic jjajangmen, which was okay. Tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork) has fruit topping, which is unusual but pretty--somewhat unnecessary frills in this particular plate. Their Tangsuyuk is good as it is. We brought some leftover Tangsuyuk home and they were still tasty even after a night in the fridge. They serve very unique fragrant tea on the house. I miss the tea. Good service. The washroom is surprisingly clean and good compare to the restaurant's size and aesthetic in the hall. read more

Rae Mi Hyang is a new restaurant three tenants down from Mama Lee's Kitchen, also a relatively new Korean (takeout) restaurant. I ended up eating a lovely meal with some fellow food bloggers and foodies! That day was a scorching hot day and the restaurant has no air conditioning (except for the washroom?!) but we all did our best with the meal I think. All cold items on the menu were unavailable that day (huh?!) so we ordered a few other dishes to compensate. The jab chae was our first dish of the night between the seven of us. Jab chae or japchae is a sweet potato noodle Korean dish, stir fried with sesame oil and traditionally with vegetables. It's one of my favorite Korean dishes to eat although some might not like the chewy, slippery texture. I thought it was beautifully done, well seasoned, and had a bit of spice in it, which was not stated in the menu. I'm sure if you don't want it spicy they can adjust! I don't normally order rice dishes when I'm out so there's not much for me to compare to other than it tasted well... like fried rice. Bonus that Rae Mi Hyang used real crab meat though and not imitation crab. XO sauce is also not a Korean-specific cooking sauce, moreso featured in Chinese cooking. The Kan Fung Gi, a deep-fried chicken with sweet and sour sauce was precisely that. Sweet and sour sauce. And although there were chili peppers thrown into the mix and it was a tad spicy, it would not compare to the Korean fried chicken that I've come to know and love at Lee House or Coco Deep Fried Chicken. Still delicious nonetheless (and crispy!) but the seasoning was just not what I expected from a Korean restaurant. Another Korean dish favorite of mine is Jajang Myun or jajangmyeon. It's made up of chunjang, a salty black soybean paste with vegetables. At Won Jung Gak, you can actually get this as a half bowl and the other half as Jjam Bbong, a spicy seafood noodle soup. This particular version was close to Won Jung Gak's, and not overly sweet. I'm always a fan of this dish when next to other Korean dishes because it takes away some of the heat really well! And speaking about Jjam Bbong, no Korean restaurant trial is valid without it. Or so Joe would say. He unfortunately had a work meeting that night and was unable to come. Otherwise, he'd be all over this dish. It comes with a whole section of crab legs for God's sake. That's a pretty big win compared to all the other Korean restaurants I've tried. The bowl had a good amount of spice to it, comparable to what I'm use to. Delicious! Joe would have approved. Loads of seafood in it, mussels, shrimp, squid, and a mound of vegetables. The dinner ended early, with most of us 3/4 full I'm sure, as we headed out to Tutti Frutti afterwards for dessert. To be honest I think looking at the menu we expected more Korean dishes when really the restaurant could be categorized as Chinese-Korean. Or Korean-Chinese. Whichever. And it was hot in there! A couple of fans were placed in the room but warm air circulating around doesn't seem to help much. Hopefully it's only a temporary problem and they will have air conditioning installed for the rest of summer or next year. The food was good, I had no major complaints once it was obvious that I wasn't in a traditional Korean restaurant. Would I go back? I almost never crave Chinese food, which is odd. And with my Korean kick lately, Mama Lee's Kitchen is just a few steps away. But for those who want a little bit of both, or can't handle a lot of Korean spices, Rae Mi Hyang would be a nice pick! After the opening of Mama Lee's Kitchen in the south side I was surprised to hear that another Korean restaurant was opening up in the same strip mall. I'm not the biggest fan of Korean style Chinese food but figured it was worth checking out since it is so close to where I live. A bunch of us decided to get together and check this restaurant out on a Thursday night. The restaurant doesn't take reservations so arriving at 6pm allowed us to get seated at a large enough table for us all. That fateful night was one of the hottest in Edmonton so far for the summer and lucky for us the restaurant has no air conditioning. The combination of the outside temperature, number of people seated inside and the heat coming from the kitchen made it crazy hot in that small little restaurant. In most Asian cuisines, dishes are served family style so you're able to have a little bit of everything. We were disappointed to find out that none of the cold seasonal dishes were available, especially given how hot it was in the restaurant! But we decided to start with Jab Chae (#19, $20) which is one of my favourite Korean dishes. The dish is comprised of chewy sweet potato noodles stir fried with a variety of vegetables and pork. I really enjoyed the version at Rae Mi Hyang as there was plenty of fragrant sesame oil for flavouring which also prevented the noodles from sticking to one another. There was a generous portion of vegetables, everything was seasoned well, and it even had a kick of heat! Next up was a crab meat fried rice with XO sauce (#46, $15) which came piping hot to the table. There was a good amount of real crab meat in the rice, some vegetables, and fried egg. A bit of heat came from the XO sauce, but otherwise I found the dish to be quite ordinary. With a thin, deep fried coating and a smothering in sweet chili sauce, Korean fried chicken seems to be all the rage these days. The Kan Fung Gi (#25, $23) at Rae Mi Hyang is described as deep fried chicken with a spicy and sour sauce. A huge plate of deep fried chicken strips arrived at the table coated in a sweet and very spicy sauce. I'm not a huge fan of sweet & spicy so I was a little disappointed when the dish arrived different from the description on the menu. Everyone else seemed to enjoy the dish though, working hard to eat through the heat of the chilis. Next up were our noodle dishes, and the first to arrive was the Jajang Myun (#37 - family size, $18). This dish is very popular in Korean Chinese restaurants as it is a dish that originated out of China. A thick sauce is made out of salty black soybeans and Rae Mi Hyang has the flavour spot on. It has a perfect balance between sweet and savoury, and the sauce isn't overly thick. The wheat noodles resting below the sauce were al dente with a slightly chewy texture, and there was a good portion of onions, cucumbers and radish to accompany the dish. Last but not least came the Jjam Bong, and we ordered the spicier version (#38, $14). Jjam bong is a popular korean dish that is basically spicy seafood noodle soup. We may be crazy for ordering a hot noodle soup on a hot day, but jjam bong is a dish that I love and I wanted to try out Rae Mi Hyang's offering. A big bowl of noodles came out to the table, topped with some jalapenos to give additional heat. The broth itself was quite spicy and peppery with some garlicky notes in there as well. Mussels, shrimp and squid sat atop of the dish, and some digging around revealed half of a small crab in the bowl as well. Surprise! Had I known how spicy their dishes would be, I probably would have gone for the mild version, but the noodles were cooked well and all around it was a solid dish. Rae Mi Hyang is a cute little Korean Restaurant situated in the south side of Edmonton. It offers up something different from Mama Lee's Kitchen three doors down and the service is quick and friendly. I did feel that some the dishes tended to be more on the expensive side compared to their counterparts at other Korean restaurants, so I hope that extra profit is going towards installing some air conditioning in the restaurant! I enjoyed the noodle dishes and would return for the jjam bong when the weather cools down and I'm craving some Asian comfort food. read more

Been meaning to try this place out since they opened and only recently been able to try it out. The closest comparison to this place would be Won Jung Gak. The difference I found was the portions were a lot bigger for a little more in price. I ordered 2 black bean noodle (Jjyajangmyun) for my wife and kids. This is usually about the right amount to order for the three of them, but we found that it was a lot more food than we expected. We ended up packing up both of them. I ordered the bibin jjampong and it was great! I was pleasantly surprised to find large pieces of crab in my dish. I liked the amount of heat I would typically look for in traditional Korean food. If you like Won Jung Gak's noodles, this place is definitely worth trying out as well. read more

After picking up some kimchi from Mama Lee's Kitchen one day end of June, I spotted the opening of a new Korean restaurant 2 spaces down called Rae Mi Hyang. Now Mi Hyang can often mean noodles, so I was excited over the possibilities of a Korean restaurant specializing in noodles and other good eats. Together with a few fellow food bloggers we made plans to visit in early July. The restaurant does not take any reservations, so ensure that you go early in order to get a table large enough for your group. First glance of the menu showed that there were noodle dishes to be ordered as well as a scattering of other Korean dishes. We soon learned though, that Rae Mi Hyang is actually a Chinese Korean restaurant. As a result, many traditional Korean dishes were not on the menu such as korean short ribs, bugulgi or tteokbokki (korean rice cakes). On this particular day, the weather in Edmonton was also incredibly hot. Sadly, all of the cold noodle dishes and cold dishes were also not available. This was rather unfortunate, as the restaurant does not have any air conditioning so it made for a slightly interesting meal. Needless to say, we all drank a lot of water in our attempts to cool down. The first dish that we ordered was the Jap Chae ($20). This dish is made with sweet potato noodles (the clear noodles) stir fried with beef, carrots, onion, peppers, cabbage and flavoured with soy sauce and sweetened with a bit of sugar. There is also a sprinkling of sesame seeds and some slivers of chili. This dish can be served hot or cold. At Rae Mi Hyang it came as a hot dish and has a slight kick of spice. Fried rice with crab meat in an XO sauce was next ($15). There was real crab meat stir fried into the dish but it was hard to tell if the XO sauce had been mixed into the dish. I also found the portion size for this dish a bit small considering that it was $15. The Kan Fung Gi ($23) seemed to be the dish that everyone enjoyed the most. This dish was comprised of boneless chicken strips deep fried and coated in a sweet and spicy sauce. Plus, what is there not to like about Korean Fried Chicken? The only difference about Rae Mi Hyang's fried chicken is that it is more on the sweet and gingery with a hit of heat compared to the fried chickens at other Korean restaurants. This dish was a bit disappointing for some of us as we had envisioned a Gochujang (spicy sweet chili) sauce given the menu description. Another popular noodle dish that we ordered was the Jajian Myun ($18 family size). This noodle dish is comprised of wheat noodles covered with a thick salty black bean sauce along with onions, cucumbers and radish. You often need to give the noodles a good mix in order to ensure that the sauce covers all portions of the noodles. The last dish that was ordered was a spicy Jiam bong ($14). Whew was this noodle bowl spicy! Seems like there was a great seafood component in the bowl with mussels, shrimp, squid and even some crab legs. I managed to try some of the noodles, but the spicy seafood noodle soup was a little too spicy for my liking. Overall we all had an enjoyable meal at Rae Mi Hyang. Service was friendly and attentive. However, I did find that most of the dishes were more Chinese cooking versus Korean dishes. So, if you want more traditional Korean food than Lee House or Wong Jung Gak may be what you are looking for. The hot weather with the lack of air conditioning in the restaurant did make it a bit uncomfortable but I am sure once the weather cools down this will be a great restaurant for a hot bowl of noodle soup. Chicken with chilis (don't remember the name), Jjam Bbong, and jjajangmyun Korean food = dope. So this chicken dish is pretty good. Fried pieces of chicken sprinkled with chillies. It had some heat and was not overly fried so it was the best dish we had. Jjampong is the spicy seafood noodle soup with veg. Had some heat and really good pieces of seafood. Even though the soup was spicy, it didn't overpower the seafood taste. Jjajangmyun is black bean noodles with seafood and veg. It was alot of noodles and the most filling. Don't let the black sauce deter you from eating this really good dish. All these dishes were pretty big and filling. 4 people could probably just eat the Jjajangmyun on it's own and would be kinda full. But the 4 of us had 3 dishes cause we were starving. One downside to this place though compared to other korean places is that they don't serve all the small side dishes like kimchi and such, they just give the yellow radish thing which is quite shitty. This restaurant is located in a tough spot only because it's in the same strip mall as Mama Lee's Kitchen which I give a 3/3 on my food eating scale. This place only advantage to Mama is that it has room for more than 6 people to sit. Best Korean Chinese restaurant in Edmonton! Easily my favourite restaurant in Edmonton as well. The server there knows our order by heart, and even remembers our preferences for little things. The food is very delicious. Even when I went to Koreatown LA and experienced their Korean Chinese cuisine, I still felt like Rae Mi Hyang is the best. The prices can be a little high, but the food is tasty and they use high quality ingredients every time. read more

I really didn't expect that much from this place because it's kind of hard to see the restaurant, but my boyfriend and I decided to stop here and the food was amazing! The place is really nice too.. it's clean and has modern decorations. The food is real Korean food too! Try the Yu rim gi. The price is a bit steep but really worth it.
