    Roast Beef Po-Boy
    John L. H.

Dolly's has the best non-standard roast beef po-boy I've ever had. So what do I mean when I say non-standard? Am I some sort of roast beef snob? If you keep reading, I'll tell you. For me, a roast beef po-boy should have homemade roast beef, gravy and Leidenheimer type French Bread. Many small grocery stores and delis use a much softer loaf of bread and use boring sliced roast beef and canned gravy. Well I am here to tell you ladies and gentlemen that Dolly's version is pretty damn good. Sure it uses plain ole sliced roast beef and thin gravy, but for some reason it works. It's by far the best gas station sandwich I've ever had. That's right, this is also a gas station. In fact, the whole layout is a bit odd. The entrance from the parking lot leads to the food counter where you order. Next to the counter are a few rows of chips and a wall of drink coolers. I did like the drink coolers since it offered way more choices than most restaurants. The even had smart water. The dining area was very smokey and the TV was way too loud. I probably wouldn't have minded, but it was tuned to some NBA show and one of the host had a mind grating voice. Service was prompt and very friendly. Despite this being my first trip, I was greeted warmly by both the cooks and cashiers. It was really a good group. If you're in Lakeview and want a quick sandwich, check out Dolly's. I think you'll be glad you did.

Very trash customer service, the workers get upset when you walk in to receive service.

This was a newer build, plus a trusted brand so we stopped to fuel up while in town visiting. Today we learned why the lines are long. Prices are a bit lower plus the bonus points on the card. However being a first time user, there was a slight learning curve to use the pumps. Using the membership card is required, but this pump wouldn't take the actual card, I had to use the QR code on the app. And there is a precise process to get this to work and be successful. QR code, then payment method in timely fashion. For the uninitiated this can be a challenge knowing there is a long line of cars waiting at the ready, making a nervous experience if not prepared. I got it working after several attempts, a few curse words, and crazy looks. The pumps stack 2 vehicles at a time, luckily even with our delays, we finished at the same exact time as the larger vehicle in front of us. There was an attendant in a yellow vest at the ready to assist when needed. The place is very clean, line moves fast enough.

This of course makes it impossible for people to squeeze thru to get to an open pump. Despite that during non really busy times it goes quick.

The memory in question was about a catfish poboy wherein I ordered it and the cashier washed her hands, dredged a fresh catfish filet through an egg wash and cornmeal, prepped the roll, and voila! It was heavenly. 12+ years later, the menu only said "fish" poboy sandwich. If you're a catfish purist like myself, that's a red flag, so I went with the fried chicken. My wife ordered the Philly cheesesteak sandwich despite the geographical incongruity. Both were outstanding, and I can't recommend the kitchen enough.

They were frying up a new batch when we arrived so we waited about 15 minutes but SOOO WORTH! The chicken from the fresh batch was fried to optimal crispiness and juiciness and it was also perfectly seasoned. I don't think there's another place that tops the fried chicken here. On our road trip back from NYC to LA, the only place we stopped at in New Orleans was this spot again. It can't top the time we got it fresh, but if there's anywhere you have to stop by in New Orleans, I gotta say it's this unassuming gas station with the most gas fried chicken.

While waiting, I observed an employee preparing food, making smoothies, handling cash transactions, and then returning to food preparation while wearing the same pair of gloves throughout the process. Because I had noticed this behavior on previous visits, I decided to ask about it. I asked whether the gloves were intended to protect customers from germs or protect the employee. The employee responded, "We have a lot of gloves. I just didn't have a chance to change them." That response was concerning. Cash is handled by countless people and can carry dirt, bacteria, and other contaminants. Seeing the same gloves used for food preparation and cash handling defeats the purpose of wearing gloves in the first place. What concerns me most is that this did not appear to be a one-time oversight. I have observed similar practices on multiple visits, which suggests it may be a routine habit rather than an isolated incident. Costco may have food safety policies in place, but policies are only effective when they are consistently followed. Based on what I have repeatedly observed, I am no longer comfortable purchasing food from this location's outdoor food court. I hope management reviews food handling procedures and ensures that proper glove-changing and sanitation practices are consistently followed to protect customers.
