She's the addict; I'm along for the ride, and more often than not, the entertainment. This trip was forced upon my compliments of mother nature, who decided to drown out our last day on the cape for vacation. Cabin fever forced 9 of us to go to goodwill, an hour away. So here's the verdict. My rubric for grading is the yelp norm, notarized and copyrighted, in order of importance. Smell: C. I know aunt Ethel's been dead for ten years, but please, someone, wash her bras before dropping them off. That disco suit that's been in the cedar chest since 1977? Yup, it's here, and stinking up the store. This store suffers from a common malady, known as mothballitus. Common to goodwill stores with poor ventilation and musky clientele. Fabreeze, anyone? Muzak: B. pop radio station. Nothing exciting. A few tunes to hum, albeit off key due to pinching the nose. Lighting: C. Poor lightng in goodwill is unacceptable. Stains must be seen, reconciled, and considered. If I'm going to walk a mile in someone else's bodily fluid stains, I want to know about it. No fair for me to get malplaque and not know about it. Bring your own black light and/or LED headlamp. Cleanliness: B+. pretty good. I wouldn't volunteer to eat dinner off the floor, but nothing out of line. Organization of clothing: C+. The organization of men's pants is maddening...put all pants of like color together, and then expect men...who hate shopping...to sift through 79 pairs of tan khakis, looking for the magical 34/30 that isn't stained, ripped, or from 1986. Maddening exercise of needle in a haystack. Few goodwills have caught on to the logical method: sort by waist size, regardless of color. Give me the size that fits, I'll decide on the color. State college, pa...case in point. Bravo. Quality of clothes: A-. Pretty darn good. Lots of quality brands...should be, considering the cost of living on the cape. Mr. Bean, tommy h., Ralph, et. Al were present. Not bad. Not much ghetto brands, if that's your thing. Employees: A-. Pretty good. No noticeable issues. Other notes: no toys...good location... This store has the goods, but needs the store to show them off.

On a Friday afternoon, the cafe patrons took up almost the entire parking lot. We parked two doors down at the post office and walked back (there are no sidewalks on the side of the road). This shop is well laid out by category - women's, men's, home goods, shoes, accessories, etc. Everything was clearly tagged and almost everything seemed to be under $10. The store and the items were clean and in good condition, but the clothing styles were pretty outdated and mostly mall brands. This would be a great place if you're in town or nearby for a vacation and realize you forgot something like water shoes or wanted to quickly get a sweatshirt for a chilly night.

It is full of good, donated product, and has the widest selection of DIFFERENT things that I've seen in a thrift shop. The bottom floor is basically an unfinished basement, with rooms dedicated to certain items, especially furniture. One room was selling used books, and it has as many books as some small libraries. They had local product as well, and my wife picked up a hardly used scarf. The hallways are very tight, allowing only two people to pass when going sideways, and the staircases are one person-at-a-time. No chance for wheelchairs or strollers. Because it is so hard to move around, it was appreciated that each floor had their own cashier. I didn't see any long lines to checkout, and there were volunteers everyone, keeping things running. The prices do seem very knowledgable...you are not going to find any crazy bargains because the 'purchasing' department didn't understand the worth of some products. It is located in a very touristy area, so bargaining attempts by non-residents must happen once in a while. There was a funny sign stating that bargaining was insisted, the pricer would agree to give the discount but first increase the price by the same amount. Hopefully, everybody gets the joke.

The white haired woman was in the front as always and when I got to the counter she "HAD" to Bring hangers to the back room...I folded my 4 items and waited and waited. Did not come back in a timely manner and I had to leave. She was there to SELL even as a volunteer. She is too chatty with those cashing out and it's frustrating waiting in line listening to her look at every item you are purchasing. Too bad as I love donating there and purchasing there. They want six dollars for a used 6 inch pot. if I wanted to go antiquing, I would have gone to D's home again on 28th in East Falmouth.
