At the end of April I broke my hand and was referred to Rainier Orthopedic Institute to determine if I needed surgery or not and for a treatment plan. Since then I've been in twice and I've had a great experience! The office staff I've encountered has always been nice. Wait times have never been rough for me, both in the lobby to be taken back and then when needing to get x-rays. I have been seeing Dr. Kevin D. He's been really personable and kind throughout my experience! Overall this has been a great office to help me throughout the healing journey for my hand. read more

I don't usually write reviews for medical places unless something really stands out, but Rainier Orthopedic Institute genuinely impressed me. They saw my brother for a broken femur, which is obviously not a small thing, and from the moment we were there, the care felt different. The provider who saw him took her time, didn't rush through anything, and actually answered all of our questions in a way that made sense. You could tell she cared, not just about the injury, but about him as a person going through it. Same goes for her medical assistant. Super kind, attentive, and just easy to talk to. It didn't feel cold or clinical the way some places do. It felt like they actually wanted to make sure we understood everything and felt supported. Honestly, after seeing how they handled his care, I've been seriously considering switching my own care over to them. That says a lot coming from someone who's pretty particular about where I go. If you're dealing with anything orthopedic-related and want a team that actually listens and treats you like a human, I would absolutely recommend them. read more

I would never go here again. I was diagnosed by them last spring with an issue that requires a referral to a specialist. I never heard back, I was specifically told that the referral office would contact me not to contact them. But it could take some time. Ok I wait. And wait. Oct last year I checked back. Oh we'll resend the referral. Wait some more . Today I finally found out that the referral office denied the referral. And that they told my Dr, and to get more information from them. I go back to try to figure this out, and why I wasn't contacted when the referral was denied. I was told that once a referral is faxed off they don't ever check back. So not only did they not even do an appropriate referral in the first place, either place or lack of clinical evidence. But ignore any communication back from the referral and blatantly just go through the motions that will just get denied again. Left me in pain and delayed my treatment. And treated me as if my checking back on it was annoying. Additionally withheld information that further delayed treatment by not letting me know it was denied when I asked about it. Even if not intentionally withheld, it's still withheld and has caused me harm. I emailed the office directly, as well as my care team. I have informed them they are no longer welcome as part of my care team, and am looking for a new office. But this shouldn't be hidden and people deserve to know. read more

We have had a good experience seeing Dr Putler however scheduling and communication is not great. When you close an office location that the patient has been going to and then schedule appointments a few weeks later for follow up appointments, communicate to the patient that the office is closed and what location the patient needs to go to for follow up. And then apologize when it's brought to your attention that the patient was not notified instead of saying we called everyone when you didn't call us or tell us when we scheduled the appointments. A simple apology goes a long way. And so does better communications. read more

They send you the check in online, then you have to stand and wait. I have a significant hip and knee injury , which standing in line is overwhelming. They have you repeatedly fill out the same paperwork and give them your insurance card. Why is this happening in 2026. My doctor and MA are wonderful but the service at the front desk is horrific. read more

No patient support, unfriendly staff,. Dr Heusch did a good job repairing rotor cuff, but doesn't want to deal or have her staff give you support. I've had 2 surgeries at this clinic, they were great.. this 3rd one HORRIBLE, worst patient care, worst communication, all they want is your money for surgery. i have a pinched radial nerve, from surgery, numb hand with it hyper sensitive, now going on 7 months, extremely painful.. my primary had to help with pain. still waiting for a referral on a nerve test from my ortho.. almost 4 wks waiting. If Dr and staff too busy to help you after surgery I'd suggest going else where! read more

I have a burning pinched nerve in my back and was referred to Megan Charboneau and they made an appointment with a PA, who I believe is a PA for another doctor in their clinic. I understand that the specialists are busy, however, I feel like they should at least have the specialist review the results of the X-Rays done. I am still waiting for the PA's advice that certain medications would be prescribed this is going on day 4. I will wait one more day! Frustrated. read more

Called to make an appointment on a referral that took 30 days to get after xrays. Receptionist said that before I could make an appointment I needed to send xrays over 1st. Why am I doing all the work and why can't they acquire them from the x-ray medical Center? This is now going to take 2 months (plus 1 month prior) to get this massove shoulder pain figured out. read more

Dr. John Steedman Jr, Total Hip arthroplasty ( replacement). It only took me 3 years of hip and back pain, multiple hospital surgical and orthopedic surgeon researches, in attempts to identify the lowest rate of hospital surgical-related Staphylococcus and Streptococcus infections. The pain was debilitating at times. As a hospital- based healthcare professional, I knew surgery was unavoidable if I wanted to live pain-free, while the risks of hospital born infection was more than I was willing to take. In my research of top orthopedic surgeons I wish I had extended my search from King Co to Pierce Co years earlier, while I am grateful that I listened to my fears and doubts and I did not go with the first orthopedic surgeon's recommendation! I cannot say enough about the care received by Dr. Steedman and his entire team leading up to and throughout surgery. Surgery in their facility was far safer than a large hospital setting, fewer risks of human oversight and life-threatening risks. Going home the same day, taking a total of 3 Tylenol in my recovery, walking 3600 steps within a week - and a minimally visible scar 8 weeks later. I haven't felt this great in YEARS!!!! Top influencers for me, leading to my initial consultation, included Dr Steedman's education at John Hopkins and Mayo in addition to a US News favorable (5 stars) review. Dr. Steedman (as well as his entire staff) were all professional, kind, patient, and thorough, with not only providing all the information I needed to prepare for surgery, but answering all of my questions as well. Follow up appointments have all been equally meaningful. He even provides his cell number to patients for ANY concerns that arise within the first 48 hours emphasizing, "anytime, day or night" and that included a weekend following my surgery. Words cannot express how thankful and grateful I am for doing my research and receiving the best medical care a person could hope for! read more

I had a partial knee replacement Feb 2023 from dr Van B. He has a great bedside manner & I have recovered with no complications. I was in good shape going in and I made a big effort to move thru the pain after surgery. I've had surgery before in Seattle and I love the Puyallup office & surgery center with PT in the same building. Made the process very easy & quick. I would recommend dr Van Bergeyk. read more

I've been to several orthopedic doctors in my life and I won't be returning to Rainier. I broke my wrist and was referred to Rainier by the ER. My first visit to the PA (I never did see the doctor assigned to me) felt like a waste of time - she said these fractures are just treated like a sprained wrist and told me to keep it in the brace. Fine. So I went about my life for four weeks, keeping my wrist immobilized but using my fingers despite sometimes excruciating pain. The pain continued throughout the four weeks and I made mention of it during my next appointment. They took an x-ray of my wrist and she said the bones had normal gaps so I'm good to go - just start taking it out of the brace and move it. Also, despite pain in two other areas of the wrist, she said an MRI is a very low priority at this point. Here's the thing - I asked to see the x-ray. Turns out, they did not get the original x-ray from the ER showing the actual broken bone. The single x-ray they got at this appointment was of the underside of the wrist and did not show the broken triquetrum at all. So I'm looking at an uninjured part of my wrist in the x-ray where... surprise, surprise... the bone distance is normal. Well... wow! The x-ray was shown to me in the hallway where my appointment was most definitely over. Most bones need six weeks of immobilization so this guidance of release from the brace is not to my benefit. I feel my time and money were wasted by going to Rainier. At least the staff was really friendly :) read more

I'd basically been awake for 36 hours due to a very painful shoulder but ok I'll just breathe through it. Maybe take a yoga class (I thought to myself). I will never return to Rainier Orthopedic Institute. So many red flags in all areas. My last appointment, I waited an hour to be seen. I was told by two cashier/check-in staff that there wasn't a co-pay as it has been waived by the carrier. I called the carrier directly and this is false. Only tele-visits have the co-pay waived. And now they are billing me for the co-pay. After working with a Physician Assistant for 10 weeks, and continually hearing 'I told you this last visit', I had enough and got a second opinion from another doctor at ProAlliance in Issaquah. I'm glad I did because Rainier Orthopedic was a waste of time (10 weeks) and money. I'm starting the process over and addressing items that were missed in Puyallup and according to my new hand therapist, the process used in Puyallup was an outdated and old process. Don't waste your time, money or health here. If it doesn't sound right, get a second opinion. read more

Dr. Steedman at Rainier Ortho came highly recommended from my primary doctor when it was time for my hip replacement surgery. I am male and 67 years old. Everything was very easy and I felt very secure from the first appointment thru checking in for surgery. Once checked in for surgery the nurses made me feel comfortable and I knew I was in good hands. Dr. Steedman said my prosthesis placement was a bit more involved and took a bit longer than normal but I still walked out of rainier ortho that afternoon under my own power. Recovery nurses were with me all the time. I felt safe and secure. I am now 42 days post surgery and had my final appointment today. Dr. Steedman gave me the go ahead to start playing golf again and returning to normal activities. I highly recommend Dr.Steedman and the group at Rainier Ortho. read more

I wrote this email to their office. If i hear anything useful from them, i will update my review. I have been trying to get an appointment for months with your office. After finally getting some help from someone very helpful in your office, my referral was finally found and i was able to move forward only to get a call yesterday from a receptionist. She told me that the foot and ankle doctor, was not able to do anything for my foot and ankle that i cannot walk on in the morning at all because of the excruciating pain i am in. He didn't even see me or ask me 1 single question. No suggestion was made for any other place to help me. I have been suffering for months but hopefull that you could help me. I am very disappointed. I kept being told that my referral was probably on the doctor's desk. I called 7 times to find out if my referral was found. One nice woman finally helped me and found my referral and then it took another week and a half to get a call back that the doctor said he could not do anything for me and he would not be scheduling an office visit. The doctor never saw me or asked me anything but told me they would not schedule an office visit. They should have not wasted months of my time. I have not been able to sleep and when i get up in the morning, it takes an hour to be able to put proper weight on my foot. I was hopeful that a foot and ankle specialist would help me with my foot and ankle pain. He was useless read more

This place was horrible. I had my doctor change who he originally referred me to because this place was closer to home. The doctor I seen for my back was the worst! The first thing he said was your back x-rays look good so you don't need surgery. I told him I wasn't looking for surgery. What I was looking for was an explanation as to why for 17 months my back has been hurting. Long story but it didn't take long for me to ask him if he was having a bad day because his attitude was awful. He didn't respond to that. He did not give me the opportunity to explain the events of that last 17 months and instead wanted to talk about everything but why I was there and offer any input as to what may be causing my back pain. I will never go back to this place again. I will urge anyone I know to never go to this place. I should have gone to the place my doctor originally referred me. read more

Although he wasn't able to help me with my particular problem, he was not afraid to send me out with his best of luck, and the name and number of another fantastic Doctor that he was sure could do the job, and he was not wrong to put his faith in Dr. Wahl because I am on the road to recovery with a successful cartilage transplant! These guys rock! Where to start?! From the first visit. We checked in and sat down and didn't even have time to set up a video on my phone for my son and us to watch before they called us back. Each person we saw went over with us how the process of getting our son's arm back up to full health was going to look like. The Doctors we saw talked to us directly and in a manner in which we could understand and was good about explaining each detail. When we came back for our second visit my son had to be go under and when they brought him to his bed they had a stuffed raccoon there with a cast on the same leg as my son's arm in the same color that he choose for the cast! Do NOT use "Ryan Bahr". I was see at Rainier Orthopedics by Ryan Bahr. I hurt my ankle. They took x-rays and said I had a hairline fracture and possibly stretch tendons and muscles. My foot was swollen twice the size as normal. I could not walk and came in on crutches. Ryan issued me a walking boot and put my return-to-work date the next day after my visit. It took me 2 weeks to be able to walk in walking boot with out crutches. Due to company policies. I could not return to work due to restrictions. Because of his return-to-work date. I could not collect short-term disability. When I talked to the office they said they don't care about your company's work restrictions that is all based off of his opinion. In 20 years I've never seen a construction worker working it in a walking boot. read more

Been here three times. Two appointments and one attempt at a cortisone shot. Both appointments were with shonnard, about 6 months apart. He is a HARD SELL on surgery, giving you a rehearsed Speech repeated verbatim each time. After the first initial appointment, I elected to have the shot done instead of surgery. Why not try less invasive healing first, right? The shot was too much pressure and it was aborted. The nurse giving the shot put in a recommendation that I be sedated or put under for the shot. So another appointment had to be made with dr shonnard before I could go in and be put under. That appointment was an exact replication of the initial appointment with his speech on how SURGERY IS THE ONLY WAY TO GO. He repeated over and over how diet, exercise, and natural healing were all just a bandaid. He poo-pooed the shot, still insisting on surgery. I was given absolute NO options or opportunity to do the shot. NONE. He had no interest in anything from me, I was a waste of his time if I wasn't having surgery. Actually, I didn't even say I didn't want surgery, he just assumed. He then abruptly got up, walked out of the room and said "well good luck". read more

I had surgery on my left shoulder this past Monday. That's always fun. I have adhesive capsulitis which is also called frozen shoulder. I was injured on my last working flight when severe turbulence occurred and my shoulder has not really moved that great ever since. I was very pleased with my surgery that was performed here. The nurses really took their time to explain the procedure and outcome. After I was prepped for surgery, the doctor also came and spoke to me making sure I understood clearly what would be done and she gave me time for any last minute questions I had. The one thing I did not like is that I was intubated. I felt for the kind of surgery I was given, it was a bit extreme. If you are one who prefers over the top extra cautious, then this is the perfect place for your medical needs. The building itself is new and very clean. The staff were all friendly and seemed well organized. The follow up calls were made from the doctor and one of my nurses. I guess it is typical to be prescribed so many strong pain killers, but I thought the number was quite high. I am an anti-drug person who despises the horrible side effects from them and hardly took any of them at all. I do sit back and wonder why so many pills are given and is it possible that any patient has ever finished them all after surgery? I admit the prescription helped with the pain, but that dizzy, nauseous feeling makes it so you cant wait to think clearly again and be free of them. My experience here was very good and I would recommend it to others. read more

This is one of those accidents that you just could not make up if you tried. It happened at a dog park, with an aggressive dog chasing my dog in my direction. I had a very bad tibial plateau break/crushing, requiring a long week stay in the hospital and surgery to include a new cadaver bone, a plate and many screws. After many consultations with several surgeons I was very fortunate to have Dr. Eric Puttler taking my case to reconstruct my lower leg. He set the plan and explained my options and his recommendations with supporting reasoning. I felt very confident with his course of treatment immediately and while this injury is not fully healed and will be at least a year before I am back to skiing and running, my progress and alignment is ahead of plan. He genuinely heard my request to get back to the athletic abilities I had prior to the accident. I cannot thank Dr. Puttler and his team at the Rainier Orthopedic Institute of Puyallup enough for the amazing care they have taken with me. Was "told" by the PA that I "had to get surgery done before the end of the year". Told I wouldn't even meet the surgeon til the day of the surgery. Was handed a piece of paper describing the surgery. I was very uncomfortable with this. Never booked the surgery and never heard from the office again. After the first of the year, I tried to make another appointment. Took over a months to even get an appointment. I showed up and was told " no appointment was ever made". Essentially that I had lied about it. A new appointment could not be made for another 2 weeks. When I showed up again I was told "we tried to call you and cancel it". Only emergency patients are being seen! No offer to reschedule at all! Was told "if you have an emergency then go to the ER". Very unhappy and frustrated. Would not recommend this office to anyone! read more

I slipped and fell in January 2013 and have not felt any improvement in over 7 months. I was referred to and saw Dr. Brack and I use doctor lightly. When I was taken back by the helper lady, I was asked what I was wearing under my dress so the doctor would not be embarrassed - apparently my embarrassement was not important. The amount of time spent in the appointment was less than 10 minutes. In one fell swoop he negated what 2 X-Rays and the previous doctors had been saying for the previous 6 months, asked me if I knew what coccydynia was and gave me the minute explanation, then told me to go home and google it and become an expert. He said there was nothing he could do and it should get better in another 6 months. I will not be recommending him or Rainier Orthopedic to anyone else based on this visit. read more

My husband broke his wrist and we were referred to Rainier Ortgo. They called and said they'd call the next day to make an appt. Next day came crickets! Friday came my husband calls. "Yes we have your referral Evelyn will call you back today!" Crickets! Monday comes Evelyn calls and says "we need your precious surgical records before we can make an appt" I try to get them told that Rainier has to request them! Call Rainier back left a message! Medical records clerk calls gets info to send for records and says I quote "it's now in their court we've requested the records. Crickets! Wednesday I call get voicemail leave a message. Finally after watching my husband in excruciating pain long enough with a broken wrist I call a different orthopedic place. We get an appt for the next day. I cannot believe the lack of human decency they showed my husband. I would never recommend this place to anyone. In fact, the voicemail for the receptionist is so rude and unprofessional out the gate! read more

Dr. Steedman did a total replacement of my left knee. I opted to have it done in the outpatient surgery center at Rainier Orthopedic Institute. I was able to go home after the surgery, and recover in my home. It not only saved days in hospital, but it was a fraction of the cost of inpatient surgery. My insurance paid most of the cost. The staff at ROI has been so supportive and caring. I can't tell you how much of a difference it makes. I went back to work (part time) after just three weeks post-op. I am now at six weeks, and doing great. I couldn't be more pleased. read more

For Wendy Heusch. I ended up in Good Sam two years ago this month and had surgery on my leg after a several days of admittance. Wendy found an abscess in my calf causing me excruciating pain and making me very ill. I believe she had about 3 or 4 specialists checking on me to ensure she had pinned down the problem and the remedy. She saved my leg! After my last appointment I feel I did not take the time to adequately thank her for all she has done. Since then I have be skiing, golfing, camping, fishing, and traveling. Wendy, please know I thank you every day for every missed par shot, every salmon that got away, every ski injury, and every camping mishap;) I can not recommend you highly enough!
