Their bakery cakes are so good. I usually buy my cakes at Masse's bakery or make my own.I was short on time so I stopped by Raley's for a retirement cake for a friend. It was a BIG hit. Many people asked me where I got the cake since is was so good. They were surprised to hear it was from Raley's. I ordered a chocolate 1/4 sheet cake with whipped creme icing and filling with buttercream border, and colored sprinkles on top. The cake was moist, and not too heavy or sweet. The icing was light and cream...went perfect with the chocolate cake. They have a lot of different cake, icing, and filling options. Now I know where I can go for a great cake. I would still go to Masse's in Berkeley if I want a fancy decorated cake. read more

My review is for the Raley's Deli/Bakery sections. I LOVE Raley's deli sandwiches! They always give great portion sizes and use fresh, quality ingredients. They also have a variety of signature creations and build your own sandwich options. Today I chose to build my own sandwich consisting of Dutch Crunch bread, jalapeños, turkey, dry salami, cheddar cheese, spicy brown mustard and mayo. The 6 inch sandwiches are $6.99 and the 12 inch sandwiches are 11.99. I usually grab chips and a drink and today I had a slice of cake. The bakery is right next to the deli. I'm not sure what is going on with this market. I've lived up here for about 20 years and 20 years ago this Raley's was on par with every other Raley's I've been to. I loved their jalapeno cheese breads, kind of muffin sized. Just right for one or two people. That went away long time ago. Then, they've stopped and started dinner/meal preps/types too many to count. They rearranged the whole market a few months ago, and I still have troubles finding what I want. Even worse now, the last time I wanted Deli items for work lunches, EVERYTHING was empty. Literally. How bad is this place going to go? The Fremont Raley's, last time I was there about three years ago, was AMAZING! The only reason I come in now is that they are one of the few markets that stock chicken hearts, gizzards and livers. I've been shopping here for 20 years. My household is vegetarian and contains dairy and gluten sensitive people. We can find a lot of things here that aren't easy to find elsewhere. My criticisms are: 1) While store reorganization has been happening, it's been uneven. Sometimes you may have to look in three different parts of the store to find similar types of products, and I don't like that at all. Two areas for tea, for instance. Dairy-free sour cream is with the dairy sour cream (makes sense), but many people look for it in the natural foods section. It creates confusion. Just group like things with like things and flag according to draw attention to certain product features like bring gluten-free or vegan. 2) We've had more and more of our staple products being discontinued over the years, such as a nice selection of Spectrum expleller pressed oils. I won't buy oils extracted with solvents, so I have to go elsewhere for those now. Same with gluten-free teff wraps. There's is a whole list of things for which we must now go elsewhere. And, while at those other places, more of our shopping gets done there and Raley's loses out on all of those sales. It's unfortunate. 3) There's been a failure to keep up with certain important food trends. For instance, good gluten-free bread like Grindstone. They carry a few Beyond Meat products, but none of the sausages and so on, and they are regularly bought clean out of what they do carry. Hint, hint: there's unmet demand right under your noses. Get rid of similar products that are underselling in your freezer case and bring in more of what you keeping selling out of. 4) Holy hell, folks, those bathrooms. I dread having to use them but sometimes must. They are often just nasty. And then the automatic faucets are pointed outward, toward the user, making for mess. Ugh. All in all, I love this store. I have come to this place FAITHFULLY for 4 years STRAIGHT, and service has gone completely down! DAN in particular is the most lazy manager I've ever experienced. He obviously takes his position description as "do nothing but pawn off unqualified workers to do my job at the photo center." I've needed his help on 3 different occasions, and my partner has has 3 including one with Joe the "Director". They are all unprofessional and lack the basic essentials needed to carry a great shopping experience! Tony, the manager is always helpful when I catch him. He knows the meaning of customer service and the 1 star is for him. The others WORKERS... because they actually work: Ryan, Morinadae & others are awesome. Raley's use to be the place to shop for my groceries. And now it's just not like it use to be. The food product expired for over two weeks or more. Notified management and still nothing been done. Some shelfs empty they haven't stocked up. There use to be better management that was on top of everything in the store. I can't understand what's happening to this store every one is so busy trying to get out of work if I work slower someone else will get them. This is what I feel when I go there what the hell!!!! I don't shop here a whole lot, but when I have, I enjoy the selection: regular Fig Newtons with the high fructose corn syrup on one aisle and then the health food aisle with the organic Fig Newmans that are HFCS free. Same with the Cheetos versus Barbara's Natural Cheese Puffs, my favorite snack. I also like the Amy's organic foods line and am glad they carry Amy's products. A little bit of everything, albeit at higher prices, but the quality, selection, and service are always superb. Unfortunately, they seem to have stopped carrying the healthy version of Pop Tarts, although they still carry the regular, sugar-laden Pop Tarts. But I had quite an amusing experience here tonight just to drive my point home, amusing in a good way. So my boyfriend, family, and I did the rounds today since everyone was in town. Called Health Net, went to Cafe Soleil, then Christmas shopping at Walmart & JC Penney, then Sue's Kitchen, then stopped here at Raley's on the way home. By far the best and most competent service was here (Yeah, we don't go to Walmart for the service, either, but Sue's was the only other place with decent service) My siblings and I were trying to find a place that sells Turkish Delight over dinner. Mom, bf and I went here afterward and were getting rung up when I decided to ask the cashier if they carry Turkish Delight. "Yes," she said, although she didn't know exactly where it was located and asked a co-worker. "Aisle 12," he said without pausing. Went down Aisle 12 and was combing through the shelves without any luck, but a third employee stopped and located it for me. I was expecting each person to say, "Turkish Delight? What's that?" When it wouldn't scan at the self-checkout, a fourth employee stepped in to ring it up for me, no incompetence, indifference, or irritability at my interruption to him. Quite different from the service received at Health Net, Cafe Soleil, Walmart, and JCP. Three employees who knew where something as obscure as Turkish Delight is, and a fourth who voluntarily steps in when the self-checkout scanner won't read my items? First class service! Raley's is probably the best grocery store in the area. We go here probably about twice a week for most of whatever we need. Their range of products is consistently better than other grocery stores in the area. That said, it's not high-end by any stretch of the imagination. Most of the staff, if not frowning at you, don't really care one way or the other. If you want help with anything expect curt service. And then the coup-de-grace is when they got rid of the hand-carts because they started coming up missing. Now it's just an inefficient experience every time we go here. I have to force myself to shop here because they have items that Safeway doesn't have but I hate my experience every time. The staff is absolute garbage. They're all unkind and racist toward white people. I spent over $200 on my last grocery trip and no one said a single word to me, greeted me, etc. The lady who rang me up said nothing to me, gave me dirty looks for no reason, we bagged our own groceries with zero acknowledgement, it was a terrible experience. This store is pretty fair. The bakery, deli and produce is usually stocked and cleaned. It seems that they hire young people to work which I love seeing young people working. My issue is with the older folks at this location. There's a couple that are nice and courteous but that older "Indian looking" lady that is usually at self checkout is horrible. She sits there and watches as you go through self checkout and loves to walk away when there's an issue with the machine or act like she isn't paying attention when you need her to do her job and fix the machine. They also have 3 "European looking" folks (2 females 1 male) probably about 25-30ish that are usually in the front of the store (they have tattoos and piercings) around self checkout or the item limit line. There was a time when I came in the store to quickly grab a few things and as I entered the store 2 of the above described staff were laid back kind of just chatting and not really appearing to be intentionally working at the self checkout station. After I grabbed my items and as I approached self checkout, there were 2 self checkout registers being used by non-melanated folks. The employees were still just standing back talking not monitoring the screen that they use to monitor self check out. As the melanated person (me) walks up to use self checkout with less than 5 items in hand, the staff decides that it's time to monitor the screen (how ironic). As I walk out with my paid for items, she nervously tried to make eye contact and timidly said thank you or have a good day (I don't remember) I just looked at her, shook my head and chuckled. The guys in the meat department are awesome! They make you feel welcome. Always willing to answer questions and appear eager to assist. There's also an older gentlemen that works the produce area that is always warm and welcoming too. He seems to talk to just about everyone that's willing to talk or ask him questions. These guys seem to actually take pride in providing good service. There's also a lady that went above and beyond to help me with a pack of cheese. It was no big deal to me but she made it a big deal and she said it was her section so with her great service and the great service from the helpful staff, thank you! I ordered a cake for my 6 year olds birthday and specifically picked out a unicorn theme picture that was in their book. When I went yesterday to pick up the cupcake cake it looked horrible!! When they opened the cake I gasped in disbelief and was embarrassed because I didn't know what I was going to do an hour before her party. The lady who decorated the cake had the nerve to tell me the cakes don't always come out like the picture and had no remorse. This clearly looked nothing like the cake. I was so in shock and so were other employees in the bakery and deli . I told them there was no way that I could take this cake to my daughter's birthday party. Other employees and customers passed by looking at the cake and stated omg.. that looks nothing like the cake; that's horrible. in addition, her name with happy birthday was supposed to be on the cupcake cake, not on the board. I asked for a manager and Andrea indicated that the regular baker was on vacation and that someone has filled in for her. Andrea whipped up some single cupcakes that she had as an extra and I appreciated it however, I was disappointed because it was not what I ordered nor did it no longer have the unicorn theme that my daughter asked for. Not only was it her birthday, but it was a special birthday because she spent her birthday hospitalized last year. This is our nearest grocery store and we shop their at least twice a week. The store is clean and services are good. However, I seriously feel that they are pricey. Even when compared to Lucky. For example, a standard product like the Hawaiian bread, which is definitely everybody's favorite and hence sold in large numbers, is priced between $4.50 and $4.99. It costs $3.99 at the Lucky store in El Cerrito. It is $2.99 at Walmart, but I would rather compare it with Lucky. It is quite the same with condiments like salt. It feels like they are strategizing to make the biggest profit they can. We feel a little stuck because the other stores are farther and feel like Raley's exploits this situation of lack of competition in El Sobrante. read more

The staff at the deli(just the area) are the slowest group of people. They don't even know what's on the menu to make a sandwich lol. They just look at you and ask what's in it. So everyone is made to wear a mask in public places now. A mask that covers both your mouth and your NOSE. I have seen several employees over the last few months that let their masks slip below their nose with about 80% to 90% of their interaction with customers, no matter how long or short that interaction is. So it's a mandatory standard for customers but it's not a mandatory standard for employees?!! Fail! Raley's has been my go to store for the 20 years I have lived in the area. As of late the store has changed for the worst. The deli closes at 5pm, when people get off from work. What since does that make? The quality of fruits and vegetables are are old poor quality. I purchased a bag of Persian cucumbers Thursday, by Saturday the cucumber were sour and leaking. I returned to the today Saturday to replace my bag of cucumbers but the cucumbers on the shelf were rotting. I reported this to manager on duty. I don't think she really cared. The service needs work. Raley's demographic has changed, this does not mean quality does not matter to the new demographic. read more

We really love this store. The butcher shop here is absolutely one of the best in this area . It is super clean and these butchers know a good cut of meat. I've been going to Raleys for about 25 years and even though a little pricier, I was willing to go because of the great customer service. Saturday I bought something at another Raleys, when I got home I realized the expiration date was March 2, 2019, Expired! So I took it back to our Raleys, with the receipt, expecting an exchange and an apology. Instead, I was told by 2 managers, Michelle and Matt that their policy is to not take returns from any other store... really? The other Raleys is about 32 miles away. This is one of my favorite Grocery Stores in East Bay. Besides places like Whole Foods, Berkeley Bowl, Sun Hop Fat #2, and Grocery Outlet (yes, my weird mix of stores works for me!) this place has some incredible deals, and an extremely wide and diverse range of grocery/cooking/food/deli/produce items. I've been amazed at prices on speciality items, values on things like coffee, and they have a great kitchen supply area. Lots of good glass canisters, canning tools, baking dishes, etc. Last year and this year I purchased some of my veggie starts here (4" tomatoe plants to transplant). The deli and bakery is also awesome. Plus people working here are freindly. Only drawback is the exit onto San Pablo Damn Rd-if you make a left. So anyone who knows me knows that I'm an independent and self-assured kind of girl. I don't go looking for a man to marry and quite frankly don't know if I even want to get hitched. I'm damn fine being a lone chica in the city. However....I am Mexican. I have been brought up as such, too. That means that I was trained to cook, clean and take care of my family. So when I go home to the East Bay I know to leave my stiletto boots and Joe's Jeans at the apartment. I have what I call "Mexican Daughter Duties" when I go home. That's cleaning, laundry and yes...cooking. So the game goes... Me: "Daddy, do you want to go out to eat or do you want me to make something" Dad: "I don't want to go anywhere Mija...let's eat at home" Me: "Dammit!! I mean...okay...let me go to the store." Now...I HATE the new Lucky's. I liked Albertsons!! Argh...stupid SavOn buying my grocery store. Lucky for me there's Raley's. This place is nicely organized, they have dry foods in bins, it's always clean, the veggies are fresh and they have a huge deli/bakery area. They even have an organic hippie aisle with soy and flax seed and shit like that. The checkers are super nice, too. The food is fairly priced and they have everything I need for a Mexi-breakfast for my fam. I buy the chiles, tortillas, eggs and meat and go home to make a shit ton of food for five people. I love this Raley's location for a number of reasons. I was a Raley's virgin prior to moving to El Sobrante from the Inner Sunset neighborhood of San Francisco. I was a pretty loyal Safeway customer before but, after visiting the nearby Safeway in Pinole I became a convert. Prices are competitive, selection (especially in produce) is excellent, staff is courteous and professional. Unlike other grocery chains in the area, the store is always clean and bright. When I'm dashing in for a few items, I love using the self-checkout lanes, although these are popping up everywhere these days. Other Yelpers have pointed out that Safeway tends to be cheaper for many items. I have to admit that I haven't done any cost comparisons, but I think I will do that this week, especially since Safeway makes it easy to comparison shop with their online shopping option. :) In the final analysis, though, at least 1/2 of my reason for shopping at any grocery store is the overall shopping experience. Even in these difficult financial times (I've been unemployed for over 5 months!) I feel good about spending a little extra $ (if price difference claims bear out after analysis) for a pleasant shopping experience. My only negative, and it's a minor one, comes from their fairly deep ethic foods offering. My wife is Filipina and has introduced me to some Filipino food classics, which we always go to when we need some "down home" meals. I do 98% of the cooking for our household and sometimes I want some pork adobo or tocino but don't have time to make it from scratch. Along come's Mama Sita to the rescue. However, this Raley's location carries only 2 kinds of Mama Sita's seasoning mixes, Among all the great recipes Mama Sita's has on offer, this Raley's only carries Adobo (yay!!) and Pang Sinagang (meh).
