I was somewhat disappointed to smell marijuana from quite a distance from the guys smoking near the restroom. I avoided that area - don't want a secondary high! There is beautiful art installation "Embracing our Differences" occupying the Southern end of the park. I miss the YpsiFest Heritage Festival which I worked annually through 2019.

This is one of my favorite parks I enjoyed last summer. Nice walkway along the river, there's so much scenery. There is a cute little spot near the gazebo to sit back and watch the river roll through. That is my favorite spot in the park and I atleast spend 15 minutes whenever I'm there. I enjoyed watching the river flow and listen to the water. Great place for a quiet stroll. Love the multi tiered bridges over the water! Good place to bring kids and have relaxed outdoor activities. This park had frequently hosts different events through out spring, summer and fall before COVID. Parking is available on North and South sides of the park. Parking near the playground is usually busy, cars are parked up and down the drive down to the park. This park also connects to Frog Island Park through the bridge.

The building was later repurposed as Detroit's first public high school before being destroyed by fire in 1893. The land was then converted into a public park, and it has remained a civic space ever since. The park has some trees (not very tall yet), tables and chairs with umbrellas, a historical marker and a statue of Michigan's first governor. Loved how tucked away the location felt, despite being super conveniently located with a large free parking lot on site at Orleans and Wilkins. There was a full bar, giant/oversize yard games, and nice outdoor seating. Little Asian Bites brought the food, DJ, and other fun vendors like Pong Detroit and Scrap Soils for composting (perfect for a food event!). We were right on the Dequindre Cut bike/foot path and had plenty of walkers and bikers passing by. Just felt like a really ideal summer evening!

Grand Circus Park back to Judge Augustus B. Woodward's master plan to rebuild Detroit after the…read more1805 devastating fire. The park was meant to be a full circle - the "circus" the name - but rising land values north of Adams Street led property owners to resist selling, leaving the park as a half-moon bisected by Woodward Avenue. It links Detroit's theater district to its financial core, and over the decades, it has hosted everything from presidential eulogies to public protests. In fact, General George Armstrong Custer once delivered a eulogy there for Abraham Lincoln before thousands of mourners. The park is adorned with statuary and fountains that speak to Detroit's civic pride. The eastern half features the Russell Alger Memorial Fountain, designed by Henry Bacon (who also designed the Lincoln Memorial), with a Roman allegorical figure sculpted by Daniel Chester French. Nearby stands the statue of Mayor William Cotter Maybury. The western half is anchored by the Edison Memorial Fountain and the statue of Mayor Hazen Pingree, a populist reformer whose legacy still looms large. It's a layered space - literally, as there are parking garages below - with memorials and a green park. Plenty of benches and tables and a free wifi. It's one of my favorite things to do when I'm visiting a city other than my own. I never know what I'm going to find and as for this park, I just happened to run into it. At first glance I didn't even realize it was a park. I noticed a few empty water fountains, a couple statues, a bike share station, and there wasn't much landscaping or anything. I'm not sure if it was just the timing of my visit or what, but it came across rather dreary. I'm not sure if I would describe it as grand but considering the location, I get the circus part. It is completely surrounded by traffic and there's restaurants, theaters, and a lot of other things to do nearby. In a way, that's a circus all on its own. Would I intentionally come back to this park? Probably not, but I can always appreciate some greenery in the middle of a concrete jungle. It's good for the soul.

I did not see a parking lot, but there is some free street parking available. The park is well maintained and has benches placed along the park and a memorial flag honoring veterans of World War I, World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam War, and Persian Gulf War. The park hosts a farmer's market on Wednesday's from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. when in season. Even though this park is very small and does not have any restrooms, or trails, I like it. It is very clean and well maintained. It also offers a good place to relax and reflect or play some classic games outdoors.

Cardinal Park is a beautiful, small park located at an intersection. It is a relief to see the…read morepark there and the gazebo along with it. The area it is in benefits from it as it a welcome draught of beauty and well designed space in an urban environment. The gazebo is very nice and appreciated as a place to sit during inclement weather and to enjoy in the summertime. The benches scattered through the park invite rest no matter which direction you are traversing the park. There is no play area here and it is on a busy intersection so this is not a play park. The Melvindale Veterans Memorial is also located here. During the summertime and into the fall Melvindale hosts their Farmers' Market here. It is in a good location as it is between a commercial area with stores and restaurants and a very set of neighborhoods. The park is also graced with a lending library where people can take a book and leave a book. The lending library box is tastefully decorated with cardinals and trailing vines.

I visited recently with a friend in order to walk the park's labyrinth. Labyrinths are have existed from ancient times. They are carefully constructed patterns that one walks as an aid to meditation. The one in Gabriel Richard park is located west of the butterfly walks in the shadow of the Belle Isle Bridge. It was lovely and calming to slowly walk the labyrinth's pattern with the hot sun shining down and a cooling breeze wafting off the river. If I could, I would visit the park several times a month. And if you can, you should visit it this summer (2016).
