Windmill Pointe Park - Amazing memories

Everything about the Grosse Pointe Park parks is first rate with one exception. The tennis courts…read moreat Windmill Pointe Park are just pitiful. They were resurfaced about 3 years ago and still look brand new. But, that is because they are completely unplayable. Whoever resurfaced those courts left air pockets that substantially effect play on all four courts. If you are a 3.0 player or above I would recommend finding another place to play. The problem for us GP Park residents is that they converted the Patterson Park courts to Pickleball courts leaving us without a playable tennis court in all of GPP. It is crying shame that those managing a park system like ours cannot find a solution to this problem.

I still remember as a kid swimming around the adult pool when it wasn't adult time and watching this bigger guy we all lovingly called Boblo boat swim around the perimeter of the pool by using his hands as wheel to pedal around the pool and do his laps. It was also the first time I saw the fool horror of the red Speedo from the slicked backer tall guy that would walk around proudly by the pool, only taking a dip to cool off some. This is where I took my tennis lessons as a kid. This is where I learned to fish over by the harbor piers. They have improved the community center and it's now a nice Tompkin's center and a great communal spot to watch movies. It's great for renting for parties and gatherings. I don't live in GPP any more but I have many friends that still do and thus I still am able to visit this wonderful park that holds so many fond childhood memories for me.

Boats and jet skis cost $10, effective August 2020 kayaks are now $5. Pedestrians or bikers without a boat are free. There is one porta potty in the parking lot. This is considered a US international border so the gate locks at 10 PM and there is a penalty if you are not out in time. Dogs are allowed in the fishing park and boat launch. Poop bags if you're lucky. There is a gate attendant to take your money and enforce rules. You are not Allowed to swim or wade here, nor would you want to because it is filthy. One mile south is the Edsel and Eleanor Ford house, bird island, and the grosse pointe woods park. This is the southernmost public boat launch until Detroit. It's kind of hard to find, drive east on 9 mile until you can't anymore. Drive between fishbones restaurant and the Mobil And keep going. If you feel like you are about to blow a tire from all the potholes, you are on the right track. I do not recommend kayaking in this area if there is northern wind above 5 miles an hour or southern wind above 10 mph. I also recommend getting off the water by 11 AM when the jet skis get out.

I don't own a boat but they get quite busy at times with 2 launches. The parking lot is huge and i think it's free but I'm not sure.

Only recently constructed in 2004 during the first phase of the park's development, it stands at 63 feet tall and was designed as a scaled-down replica of the Tawas Point Lighthouse, a historic beacon on Lake Huron built in 1876. This lighthouse doesn't serve a traditional navigational role like its Great Lakes predecessors. Instead, it marks the entrance to the harbor and serves as a visual anchor for the park. The park itself was originally named Tri-Centennial State Park, commemorating the founding of Fort Detroit in 1701, and was later renamed in 2009 to honor Governor William G. Milliken, a champion of environmental stewardship. The lighthouse is not open for touring but the grounds around it are fully accessible from all angles. It is a rare lighthouse that is visible from two countries. [Round number review 1000 of 2025 - 476 in Michigan - 24554 overall]
