I went for a free trial on a Saturday morning for the Women's only BJJ. They provide gis for you to wear during the lesson and I wore it over my leggings and shirt. It was such a great experience where they let you learn the basics, watch your form, and super accommodating for injuries (constantly checking in to make sure my joints were okay since I've had surgery on my elbow and knee in the past). All the people there were super friendly and I like that it really pushes me out of my comfort zone. I would definitely look into getting a membership in the near future. read more

There are many traits in a bjj gym that you look out for, and I'm sure if you've done some research, you've heard of them. 1) Uniform policies 2) Encouragement of aggression 3) Demand of almost cult-like obedience 4) If you cannot make it on time, don't bother 5) Mats and people who smell like they haven't showered after the last class 6) Attachment to just one style, their way is the best way 7) One month's cost is like 6 months at a 24 Hour Fitness or a City Sports I've been at this gym for about a month now, and here are the results 1) Choose your swag 2) Teachers will pair you off in a manner that won't put you in danger. Students are nice across all levels, and they will adjust if you let them know about an injury, no Hunger Games here, we're all just trying to get better, one day at a time 3) Questions are encouraged, instructors will give you variations of moves if body types are an issue with executing certain movements 4) They understand people have meetings or life that comes up, shit happens 5) Everyone showers, including the mats. 6) Jiu-jitsu evolves, and they understand that we all have to evolve with it 7) Pricing is reasonable, on par with other gyms. Cheaper if you get the one-year deal Good laughs, good times, good rolls. Plus if you're worried about Covid, I've been wearing a mask in all my rolls and I haven't gotten shit for it, and partners will wait for you to put it back on if it falls off during training. For the just over three years I've been training, I've been fortunate to have experienced multiple academies. All have patient instructors, safe environments, encouraging communities, etc, but two things often overlooked are 1) diversity of training partners and 2) responsiveness to the students' needs. RG San Jose and Santa Clara have these factors on lock by a huge margin. By "diverse", I don't mean race (although, this is the Bay, so racial diversity is there too) - I'm really talking about skill levels, size, gender, fighting style. It really helps your game to have a variety of partners. I've been in situations where it was always the same 2-3 people, and it got stale fast. Along those lines, there's a variety of instructors whose styles and emphasis range all over the place, so chances are very good you'll find someone that suits your learning style. As far as responding to needs, the most recent example is their implementation of an advanced kids' class (10+, grey belt +). Kids are notoriously transient, so the ones who stick with it are few and far between, building a huge chasm between them and beginners. This may drive some to quit out of boredom, further exacerbating the problem. This class remedies this by inviting kids in this situation (from all academies, no less) to train: iron sharpens iron incarnate. Point is this: they saw the need and jumped on it right away, for which I am extremely grateful. Before, I had to tell my kid to let their partner put them in a bad situation, then work out of it from there, just to make it challenging. The "challenging" aspect of that lasted about 2 and half weeks, since aforementioned chasm was just too wide at that point. This class came in the nick of time. Congratulations seeker. If you're reading this it means you've already begun. This is a message to you my future BJJ brothers and sisters more then it is a review. The only reason I made a Yelp account was not because I want to review the coffee at a jiffy lube or tell you how worth the 2 hour wait was for a craft boba latte at some hipster spot. I made a Yelp account so I could tell you about what a difference Ralph Gracie BJJ made in my life and what it means to me. The coaches Justin, Dorian, Darren and Tiffany are some of the best I've had the pleasure to learn from. I've trained at multiple places and at many disciplines and met my share of "sensei masters" who tell you what to do but don't risk to train with the group because of the threat to their ego. But that's not the case here. The instructors roll with you on the regular to the degree of your capabilities and then some to push you to learn and grow. But the strength of an academy is not only from its exemplary staff but also it's members. A diverse community of martial artists from all walks of life brought together by our common love for BJJ. Every team member is a teacher and a student. People who celebrate your growth and grow with you. Real talk, it's a family. I first came to Ralph Gracie years ago at a heavy 250lbs with all the baggage that comes with being an overweight, insecure a-hole with bad tattoos and drank too much in my 20s brings. I remember my first class and something Dorian said to me while I was getting smashed in my first roll. "You know that feeling you have of not know what to do right now? Keep coming back and you'll never feel that again." That advice took me to new places, meeting new people, new body awareness and confidence and training as a lifestyle. At my lightest I was 180lbs without realizing it because it never felt like work. Rolling is play. I've never felt more me and present then when I roll.
