Ramen San Deluxe blew us away with their appetizers, setting high expectations while we marched into the entrees. Their eggplant fries (weird, I know) were an unconventional, tempura style veggie dish that checked the wow factor of this restaurant for me. That along with the crispy wings, brussels sprouts, and chicken bites alone would have been 5 stars for me. However, once we hit the entrees, we hit a cliff. You ever see a movie where the character introductions are fantastic, the exposition is exciting, and the buildup is promising but the movie lacks depth, character development, and an interesting plot line? That's how we felt about the entrees. We ordered the Sumo bowl, the 10 hr tonkatsu, and the kimchi and fried chicken. The ramen itself was mediocre, nothing special or particularly delicious. The chashu was well seasoned and had good texture, but the rest of the ramen was okay. Overall I would 100% recommend the appetizers here, and give the ramen (and sushi) a shot, but don't expect anything crazy.

Stopped in for lunch on a Tuesday with a party of three and managed to snag the last available booth right before the place completely filled up. While it wasn't a terrible experience, the food itself was pretty average and served lukewarm. The pricing felt a bit high for the quality and portion sizes, though that's somewhat expected for downtown Chicago. Overall, it's not somewhere we'd return to, but it got the job done for a quick lunch.

Great service from our server! Ramen was yummy and egg was perfectly cooked. I found the salmon a bit overcooked but my cousin enjoyed it. The rice was on the dry side as well, but still yummy. Good vibes and music.

My favorite ramen place when coming to the Windy City. Was smart this time and got a reservation in advance since it's typically busy in the evenings and they'll subject you to the bar. It was very convenient as we were seated promptly at a table. Wings were great and the ramen was good as always. Certainly will be back.

The karaage was so tasty, reminded me of lemon pepper wings! The bento box had so much, I couldn't even finish my sushi actually, but it was all very good! My husband did the basic tonkatau ramen and thought it was very good too. A good choice for some ramen and sushi, and prices are comparable to what I typically see at other ramen spots.

On a chilly Chicago evening, ramen felt like the appropriate meal. I walked in and was seated at the bar immediately. The vibe is dark moody with moderate noise. The menus featured an option or two to satisfy most tastes. I started with the spicy cucumbers, they were delicious and an unexpected flavor profile of sweet, savory and spicy. My main was the chicken ramen. Flavorful broth with perfectly cooked roasted chicken.

Came for lunch service on Saturday during Lollapalooza weekend, asked how long the wait was for a table of 4 and was surprised when we were quoted 1-1.5 hrs, hostess proceeds to count off how many parties are in front of us on the iPad "1, 2, 3, etc" in a condescending tone. Contemplating the wait list, or ordering Togo, we ask to put our name down just in case. She gave us attitude for not being sure if we were dining in or ordering takeout... even after we reassured her we would remove ourselves from the waitlist if we ordered takeout, you'd see us ordering... Putting our name down for the waitlist, I misspoke saying we had 5 when our party was actually 4. We catch ourselves and say "sorry 4" and she gives the most attitude "is it 5 or 4?" Girl... It is not hard to change the number from 5 to 4 on an iPad... Ramen was below average for what we were expecting and paying. The edamame and the cucumbers were abysmal. For the price, it's below average. The service from the hostess is awful. To the hostess that was wearing the Disneyland hoodie that day. Do better :)

The night before running the Chicago Marathon I was by myself and just wanted an easy meal before heading back to my room to decompress and try to get some sleep. I noticed this ramen joint across from the hotel I was staying at and decided ramen was what I craved. Walking inside I noticed a young crowd, cool vibe, and some great old school rap and hip hop music being played. I took a seat at the bar area and struck up a conversation with a few other runners doing the same as I was. Bartender was friendly and offered some suggestions. Needless to say I had a nice bowl of ramen here, the Chicken Shio. Arrived quick and hot. Tasted good enough to me and was loaded with ingredients. Just right to help fuel me up for the upcoming race. I'm not really a ramen snob so I enjoyed my meal, and if you're one to complain about the music here you're getting too old as I heard plenty of bangers from the 90s and early 2000s rap/hip-hop playing the whole time I was here. It's a whole vibe.

Sat at the bar and service was super friendly and food came out fast. The Strawberry Shochu Spritz cocktail had a strong strawberry flavor and tasted fresh. It wasn't too spirit forward, and was on the sweeter side but not too sweet. The 10 Hour Tonkotsu was phenomenal. It was so savory and flavorful. The katsu was very tender and the broth had plenty of fried garlic bits. There is plenty of seating available with some booths.

    Kimchi & Fried Chicken Ramen
    Jonathan B.

We passed by Ramen-San Deluxe in downtown and decided to go inside since we've seen tiktoks in this place. I got the kimchi and fried chicken ramen; the broth was flavorful, rich, and spicy while the chicken was juicy and crispy. I especially enjoyed the noodles since they were so bouncy and delicious. I was still a little hungry after eating just the bowl, so I would recommend getting an appetizer as well. The service was alright - we got seated at the bar since the wait was almost over an hour for a table on the weekend. The bar was a little crammed, but the bartender was very nice with asking us if we needed anything and refilling our waters. The only con was that he recommended the chili to add to a ramen, and we didn't know it costed extra. It was only a dollar, but it's always nice to just know extra costs on stuff. The ambiance was very low dimmed and pretty. It felt like a late night ramen spot being in downtown, having drinks and a bar, and just a crowd of people. The price was okay, but it's definitely not as filling as I wish. Just personal preference though as someone that doesn't get ramen a lot!

I'm still dreaming about the eggplant fries and the Ramen I had! The ramen was perfect, lots of toppings, the char shui was so tasty. Service was attentive, server was able to give spot-on recommendations. Went on a Wed night and it was busy but was able to get a table for two with no wait.

    Stacy S.

Great service, food, music... perfect for a warm lunch! Tantan-san for me and tonkatsu for him. Both delicious. We love the roasted edamame.

The Ramen "broth" tasted and felt like straight up vegetable oil. Not much "brothy" taste or texture to it. I was very surprised given the reviews and photos. The most unsettling Ramen I've ever had.

You can tell they water it down a lot and just add a ton of minced garlic to make up for it. By the end of my bowl it was just boiled garlic crumbles. The chicken ramen was also extremely underwhelming, ZERO FLAVOR in the broth and the chicken!!!!! The meat itself was very moist, but the broth honestly tastes like a can of low sodium chicken broth. Really embarrassing excuse for ramen. I really expected more out of this place. Can't compete with A-tier Asian food in other areas. Service was pretty poor too. One girl for the entire floor of tables. Ignored us the entire time apart from getting our orders. Overall not worth coming back when there's so much better Asian food out there to try.

All my previous personal experiences…read morehave always proven to me that restaurants with names that don't represent their culture in distinct ways are generally subpar. For example, I would usually never even think to step into a restaurant named Best China House, Sushi Bistro, or Mom's Korean Restaurant. (Apologies if your shops are named as such. These were meant to be generic examples) Oh, how times have changed. I would have never thought having a bowl of ramen at a Monster Ramen would give me this much pleasure. Part of it will (in fact, most of it) be on me and my general philosophy on fusion cuisine and outdated gemerational gap. There was definitely a time when avoiding agorementioned type of restaurants may have been deemed smart. But I feel the new generation of restaurant owners and chefs have up'd their games in not only at better food making, but also accepting of a bit more irony. Anyone who knows me knows how much I stay away from trying anything "fusion." It's kinda funny to myself how hypocritical it is that I would be totally okay in substituting an ingredient or two when I'm missing some when cooking, but when it comes to paying money to sit and eat that I would judge chefs by thier style of cooking. Yes, a big part of it is based on a large pool of personally gathered data, but I do acknowledge that I need to open myself up a bit more. Case in point. I was recommended MR by a fellow Yelper and I decided to give it a whirl. I happened to have a friend and his son with me, so I was able to do small tastings of 3 different ramen. And boy, was I pleasantly surprised. We collectively had bowls of shio, shoyu and miso specials. Plus, I ended up getting the Summer Special bowl to go for my wife. All of them had their individual charm to them but more importantly, each of them were made to perfection when it came to broth seasoning and noodle texture, which are THE two most important aspect of ramen, in my opionion. Not too salty nor bland soup. Perfectly dense noodles. I just loved all four! It wad when I tasted the yuzu in tgeir shio ramen that my wife would love it. Even though I brought her the spicy Sunmer version home, I still think it'll be worth bringing her and our daughter back when we get a chance to. Our server Dionne (I think) was most pleasant and helpful. The atmosphere of the restaurant was great, too. It helped that I came before the dinner rush, although, I can also see more lively vibe being nice as well. Will be back with the fam definitely!
