I have spent the last 25+ years going to the Minneapolis Farmers Market every weekend from April to Sept/Oct. Even on weeks that I wasn't going to be home I would come down for the people, the sounds, the smells, the fresh produce. I have this thing in my mind about Farmers Markets and supporting local businesses, local growers and buying good clean healthy products from people who do this year after year! Watching young and old, rich and poor come down to buy locally grown, seasonal products! As a trained Chef, lover of food, lover of people and crowds everything about a farmers market hits for me! I have been to a lot of famers markets in a lot of Cities and States as well, all along those lines for the most part... Now the Boise Farmers Market is very nice, lots of great vendors, good food trucks, Awesome Bagels (shout out to @Good Time Bagels) but the pricing for produce is quite honestly bizarre ! I have been here only 3 months but I find Boise overall to have a much lower cost of living to what I am used to. Restaurants, stores, coffee, alcohol...the little things I enjoy in life are much less expensive...except veggies at the Farmers Market! I would routinely pick up fresh lettuce of various types at the market for $1-2 dollars a head...Boise $7-10??? $7 dollars for a bag of lettuce, are you kidding me, $10..WTF??? $3 for a very, very small bunch of carrots...something that I would expect for $1...This is NOT the markets you would pick up your weekly need of veggies at, you couldn't afford to. $11 for a loaf of fresh bread, really...that's like double what I would pay at Whole Foods (whole paycheck as it's known). Now I get getting a fair price for your product, for your work, what you do...but it's a head of lettuce, it's a carrot...are the costs of growing that much more? That is a general question. MN is a very high tax State, especially compared to ID...not why I moved here at all, love the Boise vibe from the first time I came for work! I very much love this city, the people are so nice but the farmer market both confuses me and disappointed me all at the same time! I will come down ever weekend, I will enjoy the people, the smells, the food and coffee...especially the Bagels...but I will NOT buy lettuce which is such a shame! If you have ever eaten freshly grown lettuce compared to the stuff you get from the grocery store, everything about it is so much better. It actually has flavor, a crunch, taste...but not for $8 (using an average) that's just stupid! Where do the chefs buy fresh produce? Where do the families who want to buy local, want a healthier life for their families...where do they shop? Curious!

Minus 1 star because it was a) a bit expensive and b) full of dogs even though signs say no dogs (I like them, but not everyone does - for those who don't, it would be good to enforce or at least be aware, it's not a dog free market).

Apparently the manage thinks it's ok to be abusive towards delivery drivers. I was there to pick up…read morean order for delivery. I was told to pick up 2 packages. They had three. I am not supposed to take things not assigned to me. The manager came out and demanded that I take it and call support. I am on a time crunch and am penalized if things are delivered late. I told him I couldn't do that. He proceeded to talk down to me and tell me that I was required to do it. I told him he wasn't my boss. That's when he said to me fuck you get out of my store. I said excuse me I'm not supposed to take packages that aren't assigned to me. That's when he said "get out of my store you lazy piece of shit." I was just a delivery driver trying to do my job and did not deserve to be treated that way.

Opened October 2019 this little local convenience market featuring local producers is getting…read morebetter all the time, including more selection in freezer case of local rancher / farmer animal proteins from top quality, pasture raised and sustainable husbandry producers like Malheur River and McIntyre Family. Although this is 30 minutes from our front door, it is our go to when we're looking for pastured pork or poultry products. (We don't eat beef but they have that too.) If they had a good selection of local lamb cuts it would be golden for us - our favorite protein - but it is a harder sell for them so they carry less. (Americans consume on average only 1 pound of lamb / person / year. And about 97 pounds of chicken per person annually. Both are shocking numbers.) We purchased bone-in pork shoulder from Malheur which I boned and cut up for Asado de Bodas (aka Mexican wedding stew, I think, sort of mole meets asado de puerco) cutting off the beautiful fresh fat cap to render down for sauteing the veg, and using the bone to make a pork broth to freeze for pozole sometime in the future. And if you like to cook Italian food, Malheur made jowl bacon (otherwise known in Italy as guanciale) this winter which was sold here and is THE perfect thing for carbonara and Amatriciana sauces. My Brooklyn born hubby is Italian heritage and grew up with an Italian speaking nonna in the kitchen so we have used a lot of guanciale - not in Boise though where it is hard to find - and this is the best we have ever used. Still not carrying much fresh market produce but they have added Acme Bread to the line up and on Saturdays I think Acme rotates in a special kind of loaf. From time to time they have had "meet the maker" tastings on Saturdays for some of the vendors they carry. And here's a tip you'll thank me for - if they have local Morning Star Acres jam on the shelf, buy it. Especially the huckleberry! SERVICE: The owner is on site almost all the time, very friendly, very responsive to FB messaging if you have questions about something in stock and always able to help by phone too before making a trip if you're looking for something specific. SET UP: Small but with a good expanse of windows it is light and bright and well organized with refrigerator / freezer case along one wall, larder / pantry shelving next to that with food products for sale and other items - like local artists and crafters goods for sale- also placed around the store. ACCESSIBILITY: ADA parking correctly designed for van access striping on the passenger side adjacent to building. Small ramp up to sidewalk. All on one floor. Ample floor clearance. The loo fails ADA and Idaho code compliance with counters and towel dispenser too high. The eat in counter has only high stool level seating so inaccessible. The ADA is 30 years old in July and it is past time to get this right everywhere for equal access. (Yep. I have a dog in this hunt since I have had MS since college.) LOCATION: In the Bench neighborhood right across from Idaho Youth Ranch thrift shop and just next door to a Vincent St. Paul sales store. PARKING: Private lot has about 15 parking spaces.

The nice guy who works in this little Middle Eastern grocery and homewares market, and I assume is…read moreowner, may be at a disadvantage because he is just a few blocks away from Ishtar market which is a bigger and better stocked for Middle Eastern grocery items. But Alahmad is different in that it also has a selection of home decor and houseware goods and a back room with clothing, all of which seem focused on serving the preferences of Middle Eastern immigrants here who I'm sure miss these reminders of home or access to traditional clothing. But one can tell from being greeted as they open the door here by a voice door bell which is "Welcome" in English a couple of plaques on the wall outside with similar English greetings that he is eager for everyone to feel welcome and shop here. We are fans of Middle Eastern food and cook it often at home, and we've driven by the Alahmad sign several times but not gone in because the parking lot and building looked so forlorn. The space next to Alahmad, a former day spa, is vacant and the landlord has let the building and lot go into disrepair. But pride of ownership shows in Alahmad for the layout of the store. Good for the owner! For food products he carries what other Middle Eastern markets do, and we also noted a couple of cases of fresh produce items, like 'baby eggplant' , okra and onions in the front of the store too. He carries a type of Middle Eastern sesame cookie that is similar to an Italian Regina cookie but more short and less sweet and of which my hubby is a big fan. I see a lot of cartons of that cookie making it out of his store into our kitchen in months to come. I think I also spied some frozen barberries in the freezer case and if so those are hard to find anywhere. An Arabic language TV station was on in the store broadcasting what seemed like a daytime drama. (Given the market name, I surmise the owner may hail from Kuwait originally.) It was fun to feel immersed in a cultural setting given the clothing and home décor and TV. The owner told us his store has been open for 2 1/2 years. We wish him success. Give it a try. THIS N THAT: 1) PARKING: A handful of spots in a decaying paved lot. There was at one time an accessible parking spot marked here, you can see the remnants of the blue paint, but it no longer is. 2) ACCESSIBILITY: A makeshift curb cut / ramp from the parking lot onto the little sidewalk makes accessibility possible if difficult. Once in the store it is all on one level with ample space in between aisles.
