Great example of an old school lumber yard and hardware store. I needed some parts to install a toilet and they had exactly what I needed, and it was in stock- not just an empty hangar on the wall, mocking me, like so many places I shop- including Lowe's which is my go-to back home. I grew up in Dallas and currently live in a suburb of Dallas. So I'm living in a metroplex of 6.8 million people. I own a small place in Taos now, and for sure it is a radical change, but one I welcome. So a bit of history for those who came from elsewhere. I recall when most hardware and lumber operations closed at noon on Saturday, and virtually everything was closed on Sunday (Texas Blue Law). Most retail stores closed at 5 or 6 pm weekdays, except might stay open to 9 pm on Thursdays. This was customary. I lived in a small town of less than 1,500 people in North Texas 40 years ago. They "rolled up the streets" around noon on Saturday back then, and most businesses still do. So I have seen both sides of this issue. For the working man who is into DIY, it makes it difficult to work on a project over the weekend. When I get started on a project Saturday morning, I can't say how many times I realized I needed something else to finish it, but it was after everything closed, so I was stuck until Monday morning. Not good if it is the only toilet in the house. But I also understand how valuable it is to owners and employees to have time off themselves, and how we should all take a breath and relax. In that small town in North Texas, if my ox ended up in the ditch, I could call the owner of the hardware store or the lumber yard and they would meet me at the store and get me what I needed. Taos is too big to operate like that, and times have changed, as have people. Moral of the story, there are two sides to this issue. The business owner takes a hit when you go to WalMart, Espanola or Santa Fe to shop when his/her store is closed. They have judged it is worth the loss for whatever reason- custom, rest, whatever. I won't hold it against them and will try to support a family business whenever I can. read more

There are not many lumber yards to choose from in Taos, but this one is the best. They have it all, and if not can get it shortly. They must treat their employees nice because they are in a good mood, unlike the competition. Good peaceful relaxed atmosphere. It always saddens me to see the Lowes truck in town. Poor customer service. Poor quality of wood. I was building a roof with the wood from randall lumber that they sell at $16.50. I got to the last board when the whole thing split and fell on me. I called to complain and the manager hung up on me in the middle of a sentence and told me "we do not inspect the wood when it comes in" the wood they are selling at this price is fir....which for those who do not know is weaker then oak. I was hoping that a store that specializes in lumber wood have better quality wood that would be safe to use. No one is whining, and some of us came from much smaller towns than Taos.. not 'big cities', but even in small towns they still had the good sense to be open when most people are not at work. And all the !!! you use won't change that. To be open only 3 hours on Saturday and closed Sunday just means I will now drive to Santa Fe for my larger hardware and lumber needs. Taos is notorious for poor customer services and ridiculous hours only enhance the image. Yes, I'm a new transplant.. but I dropped $$ to make this my home... and I still expect and demand proper customer care. I will of course always buy local when my needs are met..but when they aren't..I will spend my money in Santa Fe. Other then the hours, they have very good service, and will spend as much time as you need helping and explaining. Prices are decent.... Having a need to visit a hardware/lumber yard on a weekly basis I can say no store within 150 miles provides this kind of great customer service. Unlike other local establishments the staff has numerous years at the store with almost no turnover of employees. You receive a friendly smile from the cashier's upon entering the front door and within 50 feet one or two employees will stop and ask if you need assistance. It does not make a difference if you are purchasing a lb of nails or a double tank air compressor the service provided is excellent. In addition, the paint department always gives great advice and is able to match older painted walls. The owners even provided a truck, lift and driver to assist in the Food Bank pickup when our own truck was out of service. In my opinion this is the only establishment to use even if it is a mile or two further. read more

Randall's is my go-to for hardware. The customer service is the best I've ever seen, anywhere. They are well stocked, helpful and friendly. I used them as my supplier when I built my house. Deliveries were prompt. The contractor department is excellent. They've been around for a very long time because they are good at what they do. They supply the large contractors as well as they do the diy crowd, and everyone gets the personal service they are known for. read more

Some people may complain about their wanting longer hours, but hey this is why we live in Taos- to wind down. The store allows a more family situation for its employees- time for their families. Taos is a family town and this is a family store with great ,knowledgable employees. Kick back and get into the culture, plan what you need and get over the immediate impulse buying- or go elsewhere. This is one of those places I wish I could give 4.5 stars. We use them all the time for our building needs. The staff is the best in town. I only wish that the lay-out of the store made a little more sense. But hey, it's probably me, not them. I'm just getting used to finding things in here. This place is well stocked if you can find them open. They are only open the hours that most people are at work. Weekends are usually the busiest times for hardware stores, because that is when people are doing household projects. They are open only Saturday morning. There is a steep ramp in the middle of the store that renders about half the store inaccessible to mobility impaired people. read more
