It's a smallish but mighty shop. As others have noted, it is very heavy on the vinyl although the (used) CD collection, while not extensive, isn't bad. They even sell cassettes, if you have any idea what those are or have any means to play them. Frankly, cassettes always sucked. The vinyl selections are well-curated. You are likely to find some really good stuff here. They also have a lot of foreign albums you probably won't find anywhere else. Record store day review- I was away from my normal stores and visiting Salt Lake City. I walked in and saw this small record store buzzing with vinyl enthusiasts thumbing through the new releases and then going to the other sections. The gentleman at the entrance welcomed everyone into the store and asked if we had any specific pieces we were looking for during the event. The people in front of me did not, but I spoke up and gave him my list of albums. 2 in hand within 3 mins. Now, it was time to search tor any other ones that captured my attention and add to my collection. This will be my go to record store while in SLC. You can def find some unique LPs in the stacks. BUT I do not like the price stickers on the covers and on the labels. I assume they have a security issue? This place was packed on a Saturday afternoon! We had to slowly file down the aisles because of how busy it was. Randy's has thousands of records, both used and new, and quite the variety of artists! It's a lot of fun to flip through and see what they have to offer. The prices are pretty high though and you can find most of these albums cheaper online. read more

Pros: If it was stamped on vinyl, they probably have it (or can get it). Funky, slightly confusing layout that encourages browsing and flipping like the old days. Prices are no better or worse than anywhere else. Friendly staff who always compliment you on your selection. Cons: Only one--this is one of those unconventional retail businesses with weird hours. Closed on Mondays, not open til noon. I always forget this and make the trip only to remember, too late, that they're not open when I want them to be open. So don't go on Mondays! Or Sundays. Or evenings. Or when they decide not to open at other random hours (this has happened). read more

Maybe the layout isn't the best in terms of organization or getting around people? Tried finding something that was on their website, even with a staff member's help and still couldn't find it. I wish there were a way to order music via phone (and somehow charge your card) so you could simply pick it up when it comes into Randy's. It seems special orders have to be made in person. Randy's was my favourite record store stop while in SLC. The store is modestly-sized but has a really solid selection. I started at the far end of the store and immediately found a cool rocksteady comp. Then I started my way through the main rock section. While I only ended up buying one other title (an Aislers Set record), it wasn't for lack of good titles (but rather that I already owned a copy.) My partner also scored a few titles too. At the counter, the staff was really friendly and chatted both of us up about our selections. Will definitely come back next time we're in town. P.S. it's also super close to a vegan french bakery! I fully admit that I don't fancy myself a "vinyl dude" because those dudes are just cooler than I am. Those dudes know about obscure artists and which vinyl pressings are rare and they have real opinions about the warm tones that come out of a record player. No, I'm just a dude who inherited a massive record player from my grandparents' estate and along with it, their record collection. And while there are some doozies in there (Englebert Humperdinck was a favorite of my grandmother) there are also some amazing ones (a Nat King Cole album, for example) that stick out in my mind. So I dunno what's good or bad, but I know what I like. And I like having a record player and I like having records. So with that in mind, I popped into Randy's to see what would tickle my fancy. It's a small shop, but it's mostly well-organized and though it tends to focus on a nice mix of old stuff (mostly rock-ish, but only small sections for punk and heavy metal) and also of new stuff, though nothing too bubble gummy. Do those folks even release on vinyl? See, I told you I dunno much. There are some deals to be had, and discoveries to be made (there's a whole section of New-To Be Filed you can thumb through) but most of the albums that are new are priced to market standards in the 20ish range, sometimes up to $35 or so. And for a vinyl hobbyist, I probably won't drop that kind of money all the time. But for sure I'll come back and keep cruising to see what I find. If you find the right album, and you can imagine it with that round, warm tone that only a record player producers, you just buy it. read more

Good stock of both new and used records. Good little stock of 45s. The atmosphere there seems to be better these days. This is a fun store to shop in but it can get a little crowded. Still a little pricey on used records but understandably and I'm willing to spend a bit extra to enjoy browsing in person. The one thing that still annoys me about Randy's is the use of price stickers directly on some of the used records. We're talking multiple stickers...outside and inside of the sleeve and on the label too. Obviously this is some theft prevention thing but I wish they would figure out a better way rather than potentially damaging or leaving residue on items. read more

Had high hopes for Randy's, based on the number of positive reviews. Unfortunately, I shopped their online store and paid top dollar for the (brand new) Adrianne Lenker 2-LP set, opened it up to find serious marring / gunk -- as shown in the pic -- on both of the B sides (2 & 4). Have since bought another copy from Amazon (for $8 less), and that copy has (slightly less, but) the same defects on the same sides... so it's clearly a manufacturing / pressing issue. After repeated attempts, Randy's staff has basically hemmed and hawed, saying they would provide an RA# (as their policy requires when making a return), but have somehow managed to -- repeatedly -- avoid doing so. Now they're telling me that I have to send it back to their distributor ( ! ) and they might be able to provide a "partial" refund. Seriously, steer clear of this place. I'll revise if they put on their grown-up record store pants and stand by their products, but so far, this has shop been nothin' but static. UPDATE: Finally got an R/A and shipping label for the return (after 3 weeks of trying), and though I specifically asked them not to replace, the distributor sent me another copy... with similar (unplayable) scuffs on two of the 4 sides. Multiple requests for another R/A + return label; dead silence from Randy's, and still no refund... over a month in. There are many reputable & cool independent record stores that both need & have earned our support. Sadly, this is not one of them. read more

I reached out, Samuel told me it was shipped by their distributor and would send a RA# for return. That was over three weeks ago, still no RA#. Now he is ignoring my emails. They're super kind and personable and clearly hard workers, doing everything they can to keep the store running and providing new records every single day. One of the first "to-do's" on my agenda when planning a visit to a new destination or city is not sussing out the culinary options, finding the most delicious cocktails, planning excursions to tourists sites or figuring out where the happenin' neighborhoods are...it's uncovering where I can feed my serious vinyl addiction. I mean it borders on pathological. So when planning a quick stop-over in SLC, I discovered Randy's and placed it at the top of my list of must-visit destinations. Randy's has apparently been open since 1978, and it appears to be a vinyl institution in Salt Lake so props to them for longevity. It's a fairly compact shop, and they definitely try to make the most of the minimal space they have. While some reviewers have lauded the shop for being well-organized, I found the way they arranged vinyl somewhat awkward. For example, they segregate artists pre- and post-1990-ish into separate categories so you have to toggle different bins based on this rather arbitrary categorization (just my two cents). Most rock, pop, soul and R+B are mixed together (whereas in other shops they're commonly separated) - but punk, metal, country, soundtracks and jazz are organized in their own little niche within the shop - so yeah, a little odd, but there must be a method to the madness I'm missing. This wasn't a huuuuge deal, but I did find it mildly annoying. Randy's folks apparently do their research on vinyl prices - as pricing was on the higher side for both used and new vinyl...particularly for new...Prices seem to average a few to up to $7-$10 more expensive than other shops I've patronized and/or E-Bay - and in many cases even if you factor in E-Bay shipping costs, Randy's is more expensive. However, this isn't the case across the board - I found a vintage copy of Prince's "Purple Rain" for the attractive price of $11 (used in awesome shape), so I'm not complaining about that in the least! If you're in SLC, It's definitely worth a stop and a visit, and I'm sure you'll find a few nuggets, but don't expect to go hog wild and gorge on a vinyl buffet unless you're Daddy Warbucks. read more

Recently I've started collecting vinyl. I don't have a huge, spend 100s a week interest in it, but my girlfriend does. There are a couple of places around town that have decent selections, but Randy's seems to be the best. They've got a pretty big selection and are also willing to order in anything you want as well. I called into a couple other places looking to order some RSD limited releases and the other places were less than helpful. I called Randy's and they were willing to order it in no time. I was able to pickup one of the orders a couple days ago and will pick up the second later this week. Vinyl is pricey and it's hard to justify dropping $20-$35 on a record in a Spotify world. Randy's is similar to a lot of other places in that their prices are sometimes better and sometimes worse than online prices. Luckily I found a couple of records for better prices and ended up picking them up. They also sell new and used record players as well! Definitely worth checking out for any music lover. read more

Do not ever get your turntable serviced through Randy's! I dropped my turntable off on 12/26/18 and have not gotten it back yet. When I call, they just have the repair person call me back. I ask for the status of the repair and discuss what needs to happen to get it done and the NOTHING HAPPENS. I get no communication unless I call. So I think to myself "it's one of those record shops where they are too cool to say hi or is there anything you are looking for?" Looked around for a bit, all records a solid 20-30 percent higher than any other record shop I go to, and I travel for work a bunch and go to a lot of shops. Asked about records on the wall"are they both used and new?" Answer "ya", not any other information. I am not looking to make a best friend, but here is the deal, I can find new records anywhere, and on Amazon for less guaranteed. I go to local shops to support small businesses. I go here as much as I can, my most recent experience here was yesterday for RSD part 1 2020 and it was wonderful. The staff is kind, helpful, and was even passing out water bottles to the customers in line outside for the store. I love buying albums here, they are always in great shape and priced appropriately. It's not my favorite, that title belongs to Raunch, but even I will be the first to admit grunge isn't everyone's go to. Lots of music aficionados I know will recommend Randy's, and with good reason. It's just a little bit more comprehensive than it's trailer park little brother Raunch. Lots and lots of good selection here. Basically, if there's something you're looking for, it's likely to exist in these four walls. However, it lacks a little bit of the obscure, and I've yet to find some truly weird records exist here. But I like it, and I think it's reasonable. I also think the staff here are cool too. I think there's very little to complain about here. I wish we had a more competitive market here in Salt Lake, but luckily what we do have is quite good and Randy's is a testament to that. read more

Best place for vinyl hands down. There are plenty of places to buy cheap vinyl and as a long time collector i will still frequent the other places, like flea markets, antique stores and garage sales. The downside to places like them is you never really know what you're buying until you get home and clean it up and try to listen. At Randy's you have an enormous selection that you know EXACTLY what you are buying. They clean and grade them and will not sell you a bad record. If you see a scratch or mark then look on the cover as Randy's has most likely already listened for audible noise through that portion of the record or you can listen on their turntables yourself. I can't say enough nice things about the staff either, they will help you with whatever questions you have and wont steer you wrong. I get lost in there every time i go and completely lose track of time and end up being forced to leave because their closing the store. I love this place and should probably start signing my checks over to them with how much time and money i spend there. read more

This place is so cool! We have recently started listening to LPs- you don't realize how much you lose in the digitized world of CDs and MP3s. The sound quality is amazing on a great stereo system. It's a lot of fun to flip through the huge selection of records and get all nostalgic when you come across something that reminds you of your parents or your childhood. Randy's sells new releases on vinyl, too. The prices range from really cheap to really expensive, depending on the album and it's condition. A sealed Pink Floyd or Metallica may set you back more than $75, for example. This is a cool place to go if you're looking for a unique gift for someone, even if they don't have a record player. You can buy frames for albums at Target. Voila- Instant awesome present! read more

I love shopping local, and I love purchasing records from Randy's. However, my partner accidentally bought a record I already had and the staff were not nice when I attempted to exchange it. Look, I get it, heat damage is a thing. But they didn't have to be so rude from the get go. We lost $4 to a "restocking fee" and another $6 to exchange for a more expensive album.. but you know what, they lost two customers. I won't be back. read more

They have a HUGE selection, let you put a record on and listen to it if you have any doubts about its quality before buying it, great prices, and the nicest staff. I love the atmosphere in here. It's very welcoming, whereas I feel like the staff of other record shops often come across as slightly snobby. I love this shop. My fiancé bought our vinyl player at this shop, he described with ease and hospitality. To go off this, in time I have shopped here numerous times. I can only compare it to Amoeba in San Fran (claims to be the best record shop in the world, it's great but Randy's....!!). In terms of customer service, Randy's blows Amoeba out of the water. As a recent person in the vinyl world, I appreciate their input, hospitality, knowledge of music, the peeps in general. Such a fun spot, great sales, great albums. I bought Humanz and Plastic Beach (plus so much more) but these Gorillaz albums are so hard to find with their special art on the vinyl (not the typical black album).
