I want to tell you a story before I even start to review when I was a teenager thumbing through the pages of thrasher magazine I came across an advertisement for Raunch record, so of course when I got to Salt Lake City the first place I wanted to go was Raunch. This place is as Magic today as it was back in the day. Let's start the review by saying this is the only place in Salt Lake City that has a FA account not to mention a plethora of other good brands. I would also like to point out that the crew working when I was there was very knowledgeable and very kind. If you're looking for a core skate shop this is your pony I'm very sad to say there are no rollerblades for sale there. Ha! read more

Really cool place to stop in. The staff are very helpful and knowledgeable. They have tons of interesting stuff here. From LPs to stickers to skateboards. We stopped in to pick up a skateboard. They helped size it, pick out the necessary gear, build it and advise. It was a no pressure and fun experience for me and my daughter. Killer shop for vinyl and skateboard gear. I casually like records but was impressed by the selection of skateboard equipment; from a wall covered in decks to a case full of trucks and wheels, a back wall covered in grip tape and even a selection of safety equipment which we should all wear, there was something there for everyone. The record selection was really broad too, every rack I flipped through had something really cool, from punk to jazz and I left with a selection that I can't wait to get on the turntable. read more

Raunch has rightfully earned its place as a cornerstone of old school Sugar House culture. I'm talking before the influx of generic, dime a dozen restaurants and sky high prices reflective of the revival. Now look, to bag on on the resurgence of the area would be an ultimately petty thing to do. There is good that has come from more attractions and what not, but I'm glad that through it all Raunch has remained true to form. Raunch is that feeling of nostalgia, of getting a record or album and listening to it track by track. It is a relic of Salt Lake's counter culture. The owner Brad has been a punk pioneer on the scene dating back decades, and thus you can tell that a place like Raunch was truly built off of a love of music and the culture surrounding it. He is a cheerful, knowledgable man, but a humble one at that, who loves to give recommendations tailored to your style. Available here are records and albums, all sorts of merchandise and knick knacks, zines, magazines, boards, a selection of obscenely comfortable clothing, stickers, etc. To be in Raunch is to be in a place where music in all its mediums still matters. And even though I myself am guilty of the shift towards streaming, I make it a rule to come here at least a couple times a year. For a music lover, it is a must. I am so grateful that through the years this shop has stayed in the neighborhood and stayed true to the roots that made it so fantastic from the start. It is worth your visit and your money. One of my favorite record shops not just in Salt Lake, but in the world. read more

Any store that carries a wealth of Iron Lung Records releases as well as Crossed Out back patches is pretty awesome! Friendly, knowledgeable staff. Killer selection of both new and used vinyl as well as skateboards and other merchandise. Worthy of a visit if in the area. read more

Best record store in town. Brad (the owner) is remarkably knowledgeable and with none of the elitist attitude you find in some shops. Brad is happy to make recommendations, discuss any topic or even just leave you be and let you shop. Great guy, great shop. You'll find underground stuff that you'd have a hard time finding in large metro areas like NYC or LA (I've record shopped in both). Particularly when it comes to metal/hardcore/punk stuff. Oh snap! This place is exactly how it used to be, less the stairs, red brick and a viaduct. This is what alternative is about. True they may not have everything but what they do stock is all relevant. I would put the amazon, itunes down, walk in and enjoy. Nothing beats the smell of a freshly unwrapped vinyl album. I would recommend this place to everyone. As for the help, Being able to buy music from Brad is like buying a basketball from Kobe. I like Raunch because they are the raddest, longest running paragon of an independent record shop around town. Really really good music selection, skate decks, shirts, buttons, and on and on. But the musical knowledge of the peeps that work there is super impressive. I live in Idaho and I find myself in Salt Lake once or twice a year and I always make a point to hit the city's record shops. I'm kind of a picky fan of punk music and definitely do not have modern or hardcore sensibilities (probably a little old and a little square compared to the average Raunch shoppers I encounter). As out of place as I feel, I have enjoyed the experience immensely. The store owner fits the bill of a passionate niche retailer, quirks and all. He's been slamming away on the more radical end of the Salt Lake music scene for years and chatting him up about his old radio show is worth your time. My last four or five visits I have given him a specific example of the type of punk music I've had on high rotation, something as vague as "that '77 sound" or "I kind of like Radio Birdman", and he pulls the wildest looking and sounding stuff off the wall. Bands from England to Arizona, new and old. He knows the stories behind the groups, the pedigree of the players, and he gets the tone just right. To an album I have enjoyed every one of them and they are not records I would have come across otherwise. The owner, for all his sophistication about the deep ends of punk music, has never let me down and I leave with exactly what I was looking for, not just what he likes. It's always a new musical experience that builds on what I know I like. Honestly, some times I get in the car and look at the weird DIY artwork and think I've wasted my money, but that's just never been the case. This is not the shop to go browse the wide world of music, it's the perfect place to challenge yourself a little and find something cool and unique. A hearty recommendation. read more
