Guys I have gone to graywhale since I was like 13 years old because the Sandy location was the closest record store, but let me just say this place is really not all that. Okay? Their new stuff isn't bad, but the prices are INSANELY high. The common price for a newly sealed vinyl is about 30 dollars. What! Piss the bed! On another note I'm going to share a very sad story. Today I had some records I was going to bring in to sell, but I knew I was coming a kinda close to closing time so I called beforehand and asked if they'd have time to go through them tonight and they said yes. I told them I had a 20 minute drive and I'd be there soon and they said that would be okay. Sublime. So I drove there with all my stuff in my car and brought it inside and they're all like "we can't take these today, bring them in next week." Hello? I just drove 20 minutes to get here because you told me it was fine! I asked if I could leave the stuff there and they said there was "nothing they could do." Shameful. Graywhale's customer service has never been great but I expected they'd try to do something to make it right. These people do not care about their customers! Go to Randy's Records instead. They have a better selection and better prices! read more

It's outside SLC but well worth the drive to this unassuming strip mall in Taylorsville, UT. This is cavernous shop with a massive new LP trade/arrivals section and its alphabetically organized - which I've never seen before. Lots of good pickings and fair prices. There's a club card for $20 that gives you a $1 off any record you buy for life. This is a must stop for any vinyl junkie. read more

I highly recommend signing up for the membership since we signed up years ago and you get $1 off each item (I think) The prices are comparable to online prices. I received a record player for Christmas so I'll be back. They have for sure shifted from movies/DVDs over the years but they still have some. read more

I've stopped in a few times when I'm in the area mainly shopping for LPs. They have a great selection and I've always ended up buying more records than I intended headed in. In terms of pricing, it was hit or miss for me. Some records felt like a pretty good deal while others seemed to be $10-15 more than I thought they should be. Vinyl has gotten so ridiculously expensive that I end up having to draw the line somewhere. I enjoy browsing around the store and staff is friendly. My only slight knock is there wasn't much in the way of 45s/7"s if that's your thing. Membership is a solid deal. Glad I did it. read more

Graywhale is a cool little spot outside of SLC. I came here looking for records and they had enough of a selection to spend 30-60 min in various genres. I started with the used section which unfortunately didn't yield any finds. It was wasn't so much a matter of bad selection, just not anything I was looking for (usually heavy on 80s and 90s indie.) However, when I started in on their new sections I came across a couple of titles that, surprisingly, I hadn't been able to find anywhere else. Both were re-issues, one a cure record and the other wu-tang forever. Prices were reasonable and staff was friendly/helpful. Definitely worth a stop if you're a collector and find yourself in SLC (it's just a short drive outside the city). read more

If I could give a zero review I would, staff was horrible. The people there were disrespectful. They had an event today for Melanie Martinez and they could've done better with handling it. No effort to make anyone feel welcomed. Joey/Jojo was very disrespectful by shrugging off my questions and walking away. The woman had an insane attitude. 0/10 would NEVER go back. Graywhale is clean, well organized and the staff is friendly. They seem to have a good selection of CDs, records, movies and video games. Prices seem okay but may be a little expensive for used compared to online stores like Half.com and their new prices are on par with regular retail from the look of it. In these days of iTunes and Hulu it's nice in some ways to physically browse music and movies but in other ways I don't miss the dirty feeling I get handling used merchandise. If you're looking to trade-in your old music or movies Graywhale will buy them but you may be surprised by how little they're willing to offer. I traded in over 100 CDs the other day and got about $50 in trade. Many of the Top 40 CDs I had they paid only 5 cents for. If you'd rather sell your old stuff online you can do that but even then a lot of popular CDs are worth about $1, so by the time you package and ship it you're not making much. read more

A fair selection of used entertainment- mostly music, (CDs, records, even cassette) with a pretty good range of DVDs and even some VHS! Only a small selection of books though. They also sell incense though, and in a small space like theirs it's pretty overpowering. I've gone here for all kinds of old school games and equipment and I applaud them for being very kind and inventory. My 2 star rating is that I actually had a problem that did not get resolved. I bought Fable: The Lost Chapters (it's a deluxe version) online during Covid. When I got it, they sent it in the right game case but the game wasn't the deluxe version that I ordered. I'm not sure if they just sent it without checking the game or what. So I emailed them but still have not received an email back. It's been a month, so honestly I'll just be taking my business elsewhere. read more

Do not go here for anything, worst customer service I've seen. I came in with 15 discs to get resurfaced, when I got home, only three worked. I've been doing this for 4 years, usually it's 3 that don't work and the other 12 do. I ended up speaking to the manager, looking for some kind of apology, or anything and got the opposite. I was told their machine wasn't 100%("it explodes discs!') but that it still works on many discs. but when I spoke to the manager he lied and said he was there and that I was told nothing was a guarante. That never happened! And I didn't care because I already knew that. But for him to lie and keep blaming me...wow, worst service I've experienced in my 40 years. If I heard an apology I would have let it go, rather than wasting my time writing this review. But when I see something this horribly bad, I feel obligated to try to warn others. It's not even about just resurfacing discs. Should anything go wrong with any purchase, don't expect any help or service. I never even asked for anything but kept being told excuses and how it's my fault. I had 5 xbox360 discs that were worse after they got to them! but again the manager didn't care(nor the first person I spoke with), he just wanted to be right and kept his minimal money, instead of getting a repeat monthlt customer for life. Graywhale is one of my favorite places to go, especially if I am looking for something used or harder to find. They have a great collection of vinyl, CD's, movies, TV shows and video games, especially video games at this location. Everything that is used here is in great working condition and if it doesn't work, you'll get a full refund. Their prices are a little on the high end, especially compared to online, but you get the convenience of it being in your hand right now. They also do trade in, I personally haven't turned anything into them, but I have quite a few friends who have and they all state their prices are fair. This is one of my go to places if I'm looking for something hard to find or just wanting to spend some money. First Order/My Online Order Experience: I was looking for an EU import CD from a seller in America (I wanted it delivered in under 3 weeks) and Graywhale Entertainment/Graywhaleslc.com had the item in stock and for a very fair price (imports are rarely cheap). I was definitely hesitant to order from an unfamiliar and smaller out-of-state store, but I did a bit of reading online and found they had some positive mentions on multiple websites, and their physical store locations were also verifiable on more than one website. I ordered the item on August 25, I received an email on August 26 stating the order had been packaged and would be shipping soon, and the CD arrived in the expected condition on September 4. I would definitely be willing to order from them again if they had something I was looking for. I know some of the in-person reviews for this store are a bit up and down (I cannot speak to the in-store experience), but they did a great job on fulfilling my online order. My family and I recently went in for the first time in a couple of years. (We use to go there all the time.) This time was vastly different than those other times. We were pleased to see they offered more things. However, the music they had playing was certainly not for families. Now we are not so offended by the fact that the music had profane language but that we never saw a "warning" that this was now an adult store. Then after I escorted our kids to the car my husband was waiting in line and an employee stood at the counter never even acknowledging him. I could get lost in the sea of music, movies and other amazing items this Graywhale Cd Exchange has to offer. I think being the artist that I am, having friends in bands growing up and also having dated a few guys who were in bands, its only natural that music is part of who I am. My taste in music jumps all over the place! I am open minded and constantly wanting to hear new stuff. There are days where my music saves me. And that is why I love Graywhale so much. They offer everything from the mainstream (awful) Lady Gaga and Kesha to some of my all time favorites: The XX, Best Coast, Meg & Dia, Vampire Weekend, Cave In, Deftones, Arcade Fire, the list could go on and on... They have lots of stuff on vinyl which I couldn't take my eyes off of. I thought for sure I was walking out of there with a whole new collection. What I LOVE about this location? The staff is amazing! (I hope the dude in charge reads this) Every time I go in, they are courteous without being over the top and cheesy, they are SO helpful even when I have a really stupid question and they are extremely personable and likable! Zero attitude and no "I'm better than you because I work here" attitude. Whenever I go in they are always fun to talk to and I love taking their advice on new tunes or even a new movie to add to my small collection. This location is large and it is extremely organized and clean. If you can't find something, there is something wrong with you. The majority of the new stuff is factory overrun junk or niche pop culture ephemera of dubious quality. With that said, they had a big clearance sale where I got 3 movie based action figures for $2 each. Cheap construction, but not without their charm. Can you guess who I got based on the following clues (with no Googling)? 1.) Tank-top wearing driver of the "Pork Chop Express" 2.) Say hello to his "little friend" 3.) Cab driving vet who took a first date to an X-rated movie The markup on used stuff is too high given the selection. Generally, I appreciate the premise of the store and do enjoy the devil may care attitude of staff in a theoretical sense. Sometimes the employees can be really cool, other times, too cool for school (and you). Ticket sales here are a pain in the butt. Cash only and they will not refund. read more

8 times. That's how many consecutive visits before I finally found something to buy, each time coming in with the intent to purchase something. I have somewhat of a soft spot for this store...it was the first record store I found after moving to Utah and when I had a lot less money, they were my pipeline to music, back when they still sold tons of used cassettes (yes, I'm old, shut it). I've spent more here than any other CD store in the valley, more than several of them combined. DVDs, games, all kinds of stuff wandered out with me, sometimes after quite some time perusing the aisles. I go to those stores hoping to spend money and it disappoints me when I can't, which is increasingly often. Part of this is because of the change in the industry, of course. Part of it is because of their absurd pricing. Like many humans, I'm fixated on the whole "ten" thing, which is about how much I consider reasonable for a CD, unless it's a double disc. When I see single discs, especially new releases, on sale for a lot more than that, say $15.99, I just can't do it. I can and will find them elsewhere for a more appropriate price. It saddens me to do it, but I'm nothing, if not a man of principles. It baffles me that all new releases aren't priced more reasonably here, though...in fact, if the management reads the reviews of all of the Greywhale locations that I've done, they have a pretty good picture of the various changes they could make to keep this thing alive and robust...I hope they do. This store, in addition to figures and t-shirts and collectibles, also has books. Racks and racks of books, thereby laying claim to a corner of another dying market. It's a cool touch, though and definitely overpacks this store, but I like that change. They also like to have flash sales and in-store performances (maybe not those anymore, though, that whole space consideration thing and all), but don't schedule those well, hoping people will pop back in...I only really come here when I have time to kill...and am mostly not rewarded...still, staff here is always remarkably nice and this is by far my favorite...call it nostalgia or something else, but I do enjoy spending time here...even if I leave empty-handed more often than not. read more

First off, I'm biased as I'm one of the owners of Graywhale (yes we're still locally owned!) But I feel like I can be objective. The CD selection is more diverse than ever before. Lot's of genres covered, and not just the super hipster ones. You can buy the stuff you here on the radio here as well, and we no longer try to cool guy yah! (Not that we ever wanted to but for a while the employees got a little out of control with attitude, we've eliminated that and it's really great at the moment) Most people think of us as just a CD store, well we actually have a full line of DVDs and Video Games. It's full service media with an as always largest selection of used items if you can't find it new. This is our largest store and our most diverse selection. Plus we have artists performing here all the time. Couple of other cool things we do is we can repair scratched CDs, DVDs, and Games to perfect status. Really you gotta test it out as us repairing a disc for $2 is way cheaper than you buying it again (especially if it's your child's (or yours lets be honest) game) Our online site www.fatfin.com will be launching end of Jan '08 and offers real time inventory search of all our new and used items so you can always see if we have it before you drive over. My daughter and I recently attended a show and signing, by Sleeping With Sirens. I have some health issues right now, that require me to keep my limbs warm. Darby made sure that I was okay, and went out of her way, to ensure my comfort. The show was amazing, and the sound was surprisingly really good. I love Graywhale! Sometimes you can find really great oldies, or pop in to get the latest in new music. I like to ask for recommendations to try new music. They also take trade ins for movies, games, and music! They also sell a ton of vinyls and toys which is cool. I'm constantly checking in to buy new music. I just remembered why I quit going to this store a few years ago. I purchased some used Xbox One games, some PS3 games, and a bunch of DVDs. When I got home I found out that one of the Xbox One games I purchased was a duplicate. When I called three days later to inquire to an exchange or store credit for future use I was told that it could not be done. Even though I have been shopping as a Killerwhale Club member since the early 90's I think I am done with this business. I have spent thousands of dollars at Graywhale exchange over the years, I think it is time to line someone else's pockets with my hard earned cash. I can find what I need elsewhere. rotten customer service, my son bought a toy for 7$ opened it right at the counter and it was BROKEN they wouldn't let him return or even exchange because the purchase was completed and the guy at the West Jordan location said that's their policy when the receipt itself says exchange only??!!
