I took it to a recommended family Jewelry Store in St. Clair and they were saddened that it was not receiving the care or expertise needed to make my ring perfect again. Sam Clawson at the Lawrence Jeweler in Fort Gratiot, MI, worked for over a week trying to convice me that my rings were worthless and my smaller diamonds were nothing but chips, my larger diamond was not the quality I thought I had. He assured me I would be wasting money to repair something of it's quality that was so badly damaged. My ring was from Mosher's Jeweler and had been serviced by them for 30 years. I had appraisal certifications to prove the quality and value of all my rings. At the end of our "relationship", Sam was all set to sell me a new wedding set for over $12,000. When I asked for certain information in writing, the whole attitude changed. This jewelry store is not operated as a quality and trustworthy jewelry store. From the first time inside, we felt we were being hustled but wanted to see if we were correct. After their "scam" went south, we left and went to Coughlin Jewelers in St. Clair. They appraised all my jewelry in accordance with my previous appraisal certifications. Not only did they repair my wedding set, they replaced two of my diamonds with larger stones, replaced the one lost emerald, took the two smaller diamonds that had been replaced and made earring charms for me. All for $2,500. I will never darken the doors of Lawrence Jewelers and would advise EVERYONE, before making a purchase, you will be better served and get better quality by going to Coughlin Jewelers in St. Clair, MI.

I don't make that accusation casually. I was visiting Michigan and spending the day with a family I had invited to dinner and to take their children to the LEGO Store. They were humble people and dressed modestly. I am Mexican-American and, because I was traveling, I was dressed comfortably and casually. As we walked through the mall, I noticed the Rolex boutique. I own several Rolex watches and routinely stop in boutiques to see what they have. I pointed toward the store, told the family I wanted to go inside, and walked toward the entrance with them directly behind me. The two security guards at the entrance were professional and courteous. They treated me like any other customer. Then a gentleman behind the counter saw us. He looked at me. He looked at the family behind me. Then he rushed toward the entrance and physically positioned himself in the doorway to stop me. "I'm so sorry, sir, you cannot enter. We don't have enough associates to assist you. We are really busy." Really? I could see inside the store. There appeared to be TWO customers browsing. I could also see associates who appeared to have nothing to do. The family behind me immediately understood the message. They stopped approaching and backed away. I didn't. I smiled and asked, "No problem. How long should I wait?" "At least 30 minutes. You may want to visit other stores." I told him I was perfectly comfortable waiting right there. And then something remarkable happened: the supposed 30-minute wait suddenly vanished. After speaking with me for another moment, his position changed to: "Okay, you can come in." No wave of customers had left. No obvious staffing issue had suddenly been resolved. Somehow, within moments, the 30-minute barrier disappeared. Once I was inside, a young Black man entered. I watched the same employee's reaction and perceived an obvious hesitation. Given what had just happened to me, the question hanging in my mind was impossible to ignore: Why wasn't he stopped too? Shortly afterward, a white man entered. No confrontation. No warning about being understaffed. No "30-minute wait." He appeared to be given free access to the boutique. By then, the contradiction was impossible for me to overlook. I cannot tell anyone what was inside this employee's mind. But I can absolutely describe his conduct and how it affected me. Based on what I personally experienced and observed, I believe I was profiled based on my race, my appearance, the people accompanying me, and what this employee apparently perceived our economic status to be. And here's the irony: I am already a Rolex customer. I own multiple Rolex pieces. Once inside, with the entire experience already soured, I nevertheless tried to make conversation and asked about an entry-level Rolex I was considering purchasing as a gift. I was told to go to Tudor. That was enough for me. What angered me most wasn't being underestimated personally. It was watching the family I was with physically retreat from that doorway because they immediately felt that they did not belong there. I had invited them and their children out for an enjoyable evening, and in a matter of seconds, someone managed to make them feel unwelcome in a store simply because we wanted to walk inside and look at watches. Luxury is not a license to decide who looks wealthy enough to enter your store. A Rolex boutique should understand that better than almost anyone. Your customers do not owe you designer clothing, a particular skin color, or visible evidence of their bank balance before being treated with dignity. I walked toward that door as an existing Rolex owner. I walked away questioning whether I ever want to purchase another one. Rolex Boutique Tapper's Detroit should be embarrassed by this experience.

We both have family diamonds, and have discussed for years that it would be a wonderful idea to combine them and create the perfect custom engagement ring that also symbolizes our families coming together... awwwwwww... so now the time has come... :) Our appointment was with Mr. James O. Poag himself, and he was absolutely brilliant. It's his family business. He made us feel comfortable instantly, and spent about an hour with us as we did the whole design decision. We never for a moment felt rushed or pressure in any way. He was a very good listener to what we wanted, and was informative, upfront, funny and creative. It was an absolutely perfect experience! They even let our small dog come in (in a purse) so she didn't have to wait in the car alone the whole time (we drove in from Toronto). Just love that. We received a rendering of the ring designs within 2-3 weeks of our appointment. SO COOL! I am sharing those renderings so you know more about the custom design process - I had no idea! It makes it all that more exciting! The shop itself is in Strathroy, a quaint little town in southwestern Ontario. It is seriously adorable, which adds to the romance of the occasion for sure! Its interior is clean, the fantastic staff are informed, attentive and clearly interested in their careers in jewellery. I love passion. One of the reasons we loved this place when first deciding on where to go was that they do fingerprint engraving jewellery (http://www.poags.com/dimples.cfm), though we didn't end up choosing rings that suited this technique. We'll be back to create more custom work though! A second reason is that they buy gold. We brought in some old jewellery box finds to sell (didn't seem like much) and turns out we stared with an $850+ credit! Yay for the current gold market (and yay again for Poag's)! No wonder there are so many gold buyer commercials! Third: My in-laws-to-be gave us a $500 gift certificate here after researching area custom designers/gemologists/jewellers. Thank you, Macphees! Now that we have signed off on the design for all three rings (engagement, 2 x wedding bands), I have stepped out of the equation. I do know the rings were ready six weeks after our appointment (that milestone has passed), but I don't know when/where/how the proposal will happen! FUN! Will of course update this review at the next step of the journey! :) To summarize: So far, so good with our custom ring designs using family diamonds + one we purchased there! I have been extremely impressed and absolutely satisfied with every aspect of this business throughout the process. It came very highly recommended, and now I wouldn't hesitate to join the chorus. I grew up in Lake Orion and came back for a visit this weekend. It was the first time in a very…read morelong time that I had gone downtown to go shopping. I was so excited to see new shops and boutiques had opened up and was very impressed with Simply Marcella. Simply Marcella is the ultimate girly girl boutique, right down to the fact that they have a liquor license so you can drink wine while you shop. There are also a few things for the men as well, but most (as my husband did) would probably prefer to sit in the comfy chairs in the center of the store while us ladies do our thang. There was a lot to look at from wines to purses to clothes and jewelry. What immediately caught my eye was their selection of black pearls. The owner's sister was quick to help me and very knowledgeable about the pieces. She was super friendly and great to talk to. In the end, it was love at first sight with a simple black pearl necklace. My husband then became very helpful and got off the couch! I really hope to see downtown LO grow some more and will tell everyone that it's great to shop local, especially in stores as unique as Simply Marcella.
