I'm all tied up in knots. The right side of my back is like 10 miles of bad road. I either need a back-transplant or a really good massage. In a city full of world-class spas, I found this gem. Located right on the main strip of downtown, Raphael's Salon somehow managed to open shop right next to another massage place. And the competition is fierce. While being ushered into one door, a lady tried to get me into her massage shop next door. Believe it or not, they allow dogs. I brought Maddy in and tied her up to the massage table. They've got hour long body massages for $40. A bargain because the half hour is $25. You can also do a foot massage, but I can't take someone rubbing my feet for half an hour. During the massage, Maddy jumped up on the massage table. I wonder what the customers in the other stalls thought when I yelled, "GET OFF!" Haha! read more

I went to Vivian three times for haircuts. The first time, I was pleased! The second time, I told her I was trying to grow my bangs out and to please not cut them as they had gotten almost long enough to go behind my ears. She cut them. The third time, I think she might have been overbooked because she asked a man(who was very surly) to wash my hair and then later on, she asked him to dry and style my hair, and then afterwards, she came back and CUT MY BANGS agin!! I just got the impression she was too busy for me and made me feel like I was on an assembly line. I really want to come back to Raphael's, but I just don't feel good about this salon. read more

My bad experience started at check in. I gave the woman at the front desk my name to check in and a women (I am assuming she was a customer) ran over to me and loudly stated OMG your the one getting the Brazilian?!? I was shocked that this woman knew the service that I was there to receive and even more shocked that she felt the need to announce it to the entire salon. VERY unprofessional! The esthetician was very nice and she def. made me fell comfortable, but she gave me the WORST Brazilian wax I have ever had. I ask her to leave my landing strip and after getting up from the table I noticed she had taken everything off. I left the salon upset and not realizing my wax job needed further inspection. I did not notice the patches until I got home and tried to put my bathing suit on. I spent the next 1.5 hours driving to the store to buy waxing and fixing my dalmatian wax job. I am not sure why an experienced esthetitian would leave a wax job unfinished. Unless you want to look like a dalmatian I would schedule waxing services elsewhere. read more

I like to try new things and places but there's always that point where you need it done right, guaranteed, and you're willing to pay. If you're there, the guarantee is named Jessica and she works at Raphael's. (Note: It might not be actually very expensive - I'm just used to stylists in Kansas, where I don't think you can pay more than $40 for a haircut.) She's constantly traveling for training and she's committed to staying on top of her craft. She's full of ideas and she listens to what you want. I don't like to pay so much for haircuts, but she gave me one that's so good I'm stuck! It's layered in a way I've never had that gives my hair really easy body and it styles well whether I wear it curly or straight. Everyone here seems to be great with color, too, if you're looking for that. I think they use all of the Wella line and the color stays bold between appointments. read more

I went with a friend who was getting married. She told the makeup artist "natural, it's an outdoor wedding, very low key". He heard "cakey foundation that looks weird in the sun, and an entire MAC counter's worth of eye shadow/liner/mascara." I have never had such a bad experience in a hair salon such as this. Fist off, I went in for just a quick consultation because I had a budget and made that clear. I needed to get my hair colored and cut. Without discussing the price, my stylist just began doing my hair. I was not prepared to actually do my hair that day. The process took over 6 HOURS for a simple trim and ombre coloring. The stylist literally back combed my whole head and then put the color in it. Not only that but when he went to wash my hair, he began to comb through my hair, with the product still in it, with a fine tooth comb! I sat there mortified and in such pain as I saw him pulling out the clumps of hair! The result was nothing close to an ombre and I left paying an obscene amount. Not only that but I noticed a few days later how uneven my cut was. One side was a good 1 inch longer than the other! I called the owner a few days later and received my money back for the color only and an offer to come back to the owner personally next time. Sorry but this salon scared me for life to ever consider going back. read more

Tanya, my skincare therapist, was so sweet and attentive. I have tried going to this salon 3 times. The first time was a pleasant experience with a great haircut. The second time I had a long wait at the desk before someone came out from the back, then a longer wait for the stylist, but again a good haircut. The third and final time, I was basically ignored, while the staff was chit-chatting with other customers. Finally I was taken to a waiting area, and sat there for 30 minutes without anyone saying a word to me, such as they were running late, it would only be a few more minutes, sorry, etc. I finally got up and left, saying I could wait no longer. Love, Love LOVE Raphael's!!! I have thick, curly, wild hair, and Argie is the only magician to tame my mane. When I relocated to this desert in 2004, I tried every place. A Cut Above was the first and only salon to make me cry . I went the morning of my wedding anniversary for some well needed pampering. The man who owns the salon did well with the color, simple job. Then, my pet peeve, he handed me off to his wife who had no clue (I don't care how long she said she was in the business). She actually said, "You're gonna love the way this flat iron will MELT your hair straight." It looked like I stuck my fingers in an electric socket. They still made me pay full price for the Frankenstein's bride look! I was mortified! The little place by the Hyatt that starts with an M... forget it! After seeing their reaction to my curly hair, I should have gone with my instincts and bolted. I needed a three inch cut. She was so afraid to cut my hair, she was done in less than five minutes. When I looked at the hair on the floor it looked as though someone had shaved their legs. Oh, and it helps if the stylist speaks... doesn't have to be perfect English, but some English would be nice. High-lites Aveda... eh. No children allowed (that's an inconvenience at times). The treatment when you shampoo is nice but you can get it elsewhere. My master stylist...boring. Everything was dollars. If I did this, if she used this, options, options, options equaled dollars, dollars, dollars. Then, of course my pet peeve, I get handed off for the styling. A very average experience for a hefty price. Then there was Argie! From the second you step in the salon, you are greeted with smiles and offered a drink. Everyone is happy. They all seem to love their job. There are a variety of clients coming and going. So, you know they deal with all types of hair. They are always professional, upfront, and up to date with hair trends. Even when they don't have a client they are either learning or visiting others. Very positive. Argie and I always have a "talk" before she starts my hair. "Do I still like my cut? Do I have any difficulty styling my hair at home? Do I have any new ideas?" I have so much confidence in Argie's ability, I have gone in and said, "I want something different" and given her free reign. She's awesome. I always end up LOVING my hair, and it's so healthy! She takes her time doing my hair, but even more important to me, she takes the time to know her clients. She knows my likes and dislikes. She knows if I will be able to style my hair the same at home, if not, she teaches me. She has never let me down. I can't say enough about her. If you don't have a salon and stylist in which you have confidence like this, you need Raphael's. read more

Mauricio had his own plan before I even got there, so if you get scheduled with him, don't be fooled by his accented "I don't understand...". If you know what you want, lay it out or walk out. His failure to communicate what he planned to do or was in the process of doing was only overshadowed by the fact that he made me feel like an ass asking for what I wanted when I had come with pictures and samples. What good does having the "most recently trendi-est color" do for me when it clashes with every piece of clothing I own? ...without completely going off on a tangent wondering if he even knows what color an "eggplant" is... On Saturday, my boyfriend Anthony and I were in town visiting and he decided he wanted a manicure/pedicure. We walked in without an appointment, and they were very accomodating by letting us come back in an hour. We came back an hour later and Holly was able to see him right away, and they let me sit back there with him since they weren't too busy. Holly did an EXCELLENT job on his feet and hands, and he was more than pleased with the results. Holly was very nice, gentle, and talkative. Jessica was also sitting back there with her client and chatted with us as well, she was fun to talk to.
