It was in the summer of 2016 when I visited the Trinidad History Museum and received a great tour…read more I got entry and a full tour of the Baca House and the Bloom Mansion for free. (Now they have a small $5 fee.) I started with the main museum (on Chestnut Street. Outside they have a nice garden where visitors can eat veggies for free. Inside the main museum they had a bushel of good apples from their apple tree in the facility. They invited me to take a small bag of apples also free. (They also give food to charities,) The tour of the two neat old buildings are available with a museum guide only. My tour guide was a qualified historian who was full of useful information. We started with a tour of the Baca House. Don Felipe de Jesus Baca made his fortune farming and maybe some ranching. I interacted with the museum guide as she answered my questions well and we had an interesting historic conversion. We walked to the Bloom Mansion and their historian gave me a splendid tour of the three story mansion. Bloom made his fortune from his Bloom Cattle Company, The first and second floor had expensive artifacts. Since the top floor gets hotter in the summer, and colder in the winter, the servants lived on the third floor without the fancy things found on the lower floors. Both Baca and Bloom were very important to the development of the Trinidad area. I enjoyed my visit to the Trinidad History Museum. I advise that visitors to the museum sign in to their visitors log book to prove visitation, that helps keep these good museums funded and open to the public.

Most of this art museum is dedicated to his works and accoutrements. If you are fan of Cowboy/Western Art then is a must stop. I Particularly was interested in the Spanish folk art, and Native American pottery. This museum hosts a lot of local artists, with Hans Droog being of particular note, his "Swirly Horse 1" is mesmerizing. The building the art pieces are housed in is 115 years old, this building itself is a work of art, the hardwood alone floors made me swoon. You can easily spend an hour here moving on the 1st floor then 2ed floor and then back down to the gift area. Allyson, was very kind to take time out of her busy day and explain Mitchell's relationship to Harold Von Schmidt who's use of color is unique, his style and expressiveness draws you in, you feel as if you are in the scene he has created. Allyson also answered a million questions, the chat with her was as interesting as the art work. Free admission is the cherry on top.

A heads up for Mark Maggiori fans: * My husband and I drove two days from California hoping to see an original Mark Maggiori painting. * The Taos Art Museum is one of the first places that appears on Google when searching for where to view his work in Taos. * The museum's website and Google listing also suggested that his artwork was part of the collection. Unfortunately, after speaking with a docent, we learned that the museum hasn't displayed a Mark Maggiori painting in many years! They then referred us to try Parsons Gallery of the West, but they didn't have any of his work either. The gallery manager explained that Mark Maggiori is now representing himself and is no longer exhibiting locally. I completely understand that exhibitions change over time, but I would kindly encourage the museum to update its website and work with Google to correct this information. It would save other visitors from making a special trip expecting to see artwork that is no longer on display. In the end, I learned I probably should have called ahead, but I also trusted the museum's website and Google's information. Hopefully this review helps the next Mark Maggiori fan avoid the same disappointment. Despite that, the museum itself is well worth visiting. The Fechin House alone is an incredible piece of art and history!

The story of how George McJunkin who found this needs to be told more. If you really like history you should appreciate this site & story. Cell phone coverage is spotty here, so you may not be able to check in on Yelp, but I wouldn't let that deter you from booking a tour of the actual site &/or seeing original artifacts.

Millicent Rogers was a very interesting and creative (and wealthy!) woman who defied the norms for women of her time and championed Native art and artists.
