I saw Jessica for color today. I wanted to color the gray in my hair. There wasn't too much gray but I figured it would be nice for the new year. Jessica helped me choose a very natural black brown instead of the dark black that I was leaning towards. I was pleased that the black brown was so natural on me and it feels nice starting the new year with a more vibrant hair color. This salon always plays pleasant music and offers tea or cold drinks. It's a cozy salon and I love that their clientele is extremely diverse. I started coming here many years ago and I couldn't really get away for long but hopefully, I will be staying with Jessica for the coming years for more color and cuts. Jessica is a sweet person with a kind smile. That definitely makes this salon an even better place. The only thing I would change are the chairs/wash basins they use to wash hair, it would be more comfortable if they could update those because it's a bit uncomfortable. read more

I really wanted to like Cecilia, but my experience left me disappointed. From the beginning, she seemed very tired and disengaged--barely speaking to me throughout the appointment. I had come in for a simple root touch-up and trim, but nothing went as expected. She tried twice to match my roots to my natural dark brown, and both times they came out noticeably too light--something I've never had an issue with at other salons. The final result still didn't blend properly. The haircut was also mediocre. The entire process took over three hours, and I left with unsatisfying results and a heavy feeling of disappointment. Raven & Rose in Albany is where my buzzcut dream was brought into physical reality. When I was about 2 or 3 years old, I firmly decided I wanted a buzzcut hairdo. My parents gave that an ixnay, and I wore my hair short - about 2 to 5 inches long - instead. Growing up as a girl, my parents and I would get comments of the type of people asking if I was a boy. Some others would call me Thomas instead of Tanis. This did not deter me. At 26 years of age in the summer of 2019, I decided it was time and I looked up barbers near where I was living in Albany and found Raven & Rose was an approximately 5 minute walk away. The first time I went in, the one where I got all my hair cut off for the first time, I sat down on a seat in the waiting area and there was a tiny Chihuahua on the loose. It ran over to me, jumped up, and let me pet it. Its name I later found out was Cookie Monster. The woman who cut my hair each of the times I went in, I now live in Washington State, was very friendly and thoughtful in both cutting my hair and in conversation. We played around with the length, different mm lengths (millimeter lengths), and found 5 mm long to be a less jarring look for me. Interestingly, people tend to get my gender right more often with the buzzcut hairdo than they did when I was growing up. All around I enjoyed my visits to Raven & Rose and the buzzcuts I got here. I continue to wear my hair in a buzzcut hairdo as of writing this review, 2 May 2023, though I switched to cutting it myself when I moved to Washington State. read more

Oh, I'm absolutely thrilled with the salon! I loved everything -- from how beautifully the space is framed (even a raven greeted me at the door, and it turned out that at the green salon Raven & Roses they actually feed the birds!) to Noel, the salon owner, with whom I booked blindly just for a convenient time, not knowing who he was. She was super friendly, took plenty of time to really understand what I wanted . I have curly hair and not all hair stylists can cut curlz well. Over the last couple weeks I got my hair cut, and then went back to get highlights done so I could add some bright dye to it at home. Their color work looks great but due to covid cases surging and money being tighter right now I decided to do it this way since I already had dye at home. I'm very happy with my experience there! First of all, they were still requiring masks for everyone in the salon which made me feel so much safer getting my hair done here. Most other places dropped their mask requirements simply because their county did, but it means a lot to me when businesses put the health & safety of their employees and customers first. Paige checked in with me a lot to make sure she didn't go shorter than I wanted, so I have the length I asked for and now I feel like myself again. Definitely will be going back. They also say they on the site that they require proof of vaccination, but although I saw one of the other stylists ask another customer for theirs, I wasn't asked for mine. However, as we now know, vaccine's effectiveness is waning against Omicron quite a bit so it's the masking that seems more important to me these days, at least until we get a targeted booster. If you also have any underlying conditions that make you more vulnerable to covid like myself, you'll be especially happy with how Raven & Rose goes above and beyond the gvt safety measures to keep us all as healthy as possible. read more

I was hoping to not write this review but I rely on reviews to select services so I feel compelled to share my experience. I'm very disappointed with my balayage experience with Patty & unfortunately cannot recommend her to others. It was my first appointment with her so I explained my preferences about cut & balayage placement after sitting in her chair. I didn't go into too much detail about the balayage color besides saying they didn't use much toner last time - and she did not ask me ANY questions about color - because I naively thought she'd just match the color I came in with. After washing the bleach out & sitting back in the chair, I could already tell it was significantly darker than what I wanted (and came in with). She'd made me much darker & added rust/red color for some reason. When I expressed that it was darker than expected, she just kept repeating that she'd added ash (I'm still not sure why because we never discussed this). At every point that I discussed color with her (even during my makeup appointment) there was nothing but (very confusing) excuses. Fortunately I'm comfortable with being firm about my preferences because otherwise I would've been bulldozed & dismissed. I was given lightening shampoo and told to call back if it didn't lighten it enough (I wasn't expecting it to since it was about 5 shades too dark & had rust color I didn't ask for). I called back & we scheduled a makeup appointment. This time I brought photos of the color I'd originally come in with & the reference photo used for the appointment that gave me that color. (I'd told Patty over the phone that I'd bring these for the makeup appointment & she replied "You didn't show those to me last time" & I reminded her that it was the color I came in with.) At the appointment, I specifically explained that I prefer lighter & thicker sections framing my face. I also had to remind her to do the bottom section before she finished because I put my hair up a lot & there was more defensiveness (something about it "already being worked." ?? She took a picture of my hair, showed it to me, and i had to point out that it was still the old color. ??). Then she bleached it but didn't protect the my bare neck skin from the bleached hair so I had to move it when it started to burn me during processing. Ultimately, I still didn't get the color I wanted & am used to (let alone lighter/thicker face-framing sections - that was either ignored or forgotten as well) and when I expressed that there were more excuses. She said something about my hair leaning warm - something that has never been an issue in the 15 years I've been getting balayage. And I don't consider my muddy, beige-grey blonde to be "warm." Outside of the balayage issue, it was just an odd experience. She's very quiet in general and at no point did she ask me basic questions like "where do you usually part your hair" or "is the temperature too hot" for either the water or hair dryer like I'm used to (& heard the other stylists asking their clients). I've had stylists I saw for years & at every appointment they'd ask to make sure I was comfortable. It's too bad - I otherwise liked the vibe of this place. Just wish I'd chosen another stylist. read more

Raven and Rose is a no frills neighborhood joint that loves what they do. Nadia gave me a great cut and color. I wish I had a before pic to show my beautiful beach blond bayalage. Worst haircut ever. I showed a picture of what I wanted. The person took a look for not even 2 seconds. It doesn't look like the picture at all. I have very short hair and it's about at least 1" shorter in front than what I showed. So you can't hide it. You can't adjust at home either because it's already wayyy too short. Not even regular. Nothing you can do about it but cry. I had read a review here that was very enthusiastic with this woman, for short hair. I am just sooo unhappy. I wasn't even shown how the back was looking. Only 1 good thing: the other side of my haircut is ok. Just need to show the left side of my face. Easy. Answer to shop: probably a misunderstanding, but the base was a picture and it doesn't look like it at all. Didn't put a name because it's only 1 experience, didn't want to be rude.
