Five stars for the prices, the selection, and the unbeatable atmosphere. They have a section outside with hundreds of books that are 10 cents - 25 cents, and this is by far my favorite section. For under five bucks I walked away with 5 John Grisham titles, a nearly new 50 shades of grey as a gag gift for a friend, and around a half dozen historical fiction novels that my collection has been missing. The books outside are worth looking at. What blew me away and keeps me coming back to readers corner is the fact that they maintain a very high degree of professionalism while still being friendly. Never once have I gotten a weird look for coming in and asking about esoteric or Pagan books here. I can not say the same for Barnes and noble or even Edward McKay. If, by the way, you are looking for the above subject, they actually have a decent rotating stock there. I clean them out about every other month and u haven't seen the same book twice. read more

Be warned...I try to support my local businesses but...they sold me a 2 cd set with 2 copies of disc 1 and when I went back for a refund the next day (because they guarantee the quality) I was given a store credit and not my money back (this was not explained during the sale). I tired to go back later to the store to find something else but they would not accommodate my medical disability so I was not allowed in the store. (I did wear a mask, just not up to the militant general's standards working there). Very sad, they stole from me and discriminated against me. Very rude staff, they did not try to work with me at all. Tough lesson learned. read more

The Reader's Corner is definitely the best used book store in the Raleigh area. Rarely would I go more than three or four days without stopping by; for the first few months I was shopping there I had this idea that the staff probably thought something was wrong with me for buying way more books than I can possibly read, but once I started to speak to them a little bit I realized that they're more or less the same way. I can't accurately assess the store's stock in all the different sections, as I tend to read a lot of fiction and literature, but those sections rarely let me down. Sometimes I would go in looking for something and it wouldn't be there--but within a month or so they'd somehow get a copy in. Something else that impressed me: more than once did I hear one of The Reader's Corner staff telling customers to check out Nice Price Books after leaving their store (they're within walking distance of each other). One of my favorite places in Raleigh. It has been there since the 70's. Great prices, super friendly staff. They tend to carry older, more beat up books (character!) that other bookstores I find turn away. Easily Raleigh's best bookstore. When all the Waldenbooks, Booksamillion, Barnes and Noble, Borders have bitten the dust, Readers Corner will still be there, chugging along. read more

In the area, on our way to a vacation, we needed some books. Found this place on yelp. Located in the area of NC State, the first great part was the parking lot. The area has loads of businesses, and parking looks tight. Having A nice lot was great. Inside was a small, but full store. First I set the kids up in the youth aisle, then went to explore. Great prices. Helpful staff. Everyone left with 3-4 books. If I lived local, I'd be here often. read more

This place is amazing! A surprisingly large and extensive collection or used books with incredible prices (most $.25-6.00). They even have many of the popular books you wouldn't expect to find used. I found a super cheap copy of Ender's Game (which I bought) and the whole Game of Thrones book series (which I did not, not ready for that commitment! lol). A great place to browse, find a few new or old favorite, or even sell/exchange the books you no longer want. The staff was incredibly friendly and hospitable. Of the used book stores in Raleigh, this is not the biggest, but it is my favorite. Why? It's all about the books. There are bigger stores, but they are also about video games and CD's and toys and other things. This one is just about books. OK, they have managed to stick some DVD's and LP's and CD's in there. But mostly books. If you're a big fella like me, you're going to have to suck it in pretty much the whole time you're inside. The aisles are as narrow as humanly possible just to fit in one more aisle of books. Take your time, look around, and enjoy how the place is decorated with things that they've found inside of used books. UPDATE 12/13/2015: I like revisiting my old reviews to make sure that they still reflect my opinion of a business, especially if my old review might be too good for current conditions, or if the business has improved enough to deserve a better rating. I'm really happy to say that Reader's Corner continues to hold my 5 Star love. I came out with four more beautiful hardcover books for my Personal Study project (who needs a mancave?) This time I brought my shy 9 year old daughter. The staff was so nice to her. They offered to show her the children's book section, asked if there might be anything she might like to look for since it was clear that she wasn't at all into my perusal of the Classics section. Take your time and really look carefully; there are diamonds hiding all over the shop. read more

I just found this fabulous store 2 days ago! I was astonished at the amount of quality books to be found for a very reasonable price. Mixed in between the shelf walls is memorabilia that has been found in books over the years. Saw some old memories pinned in their walls! Looking forward to my next visit. read more

I appreciate this place. I love the 25 cent books and the selection overall is pretty amazing. It suffers from the same problem that so many book stores do: too many books. It seems crazy to criticize a surplus of options, but this is a pretty small building. It's actually tough to get around. I went on a Sunday afternoon, so it was fairly busy, and there were times where I wanted to browse over a section of books, but I felt like I couldn't because I blocked the entire narrow aisle. I am not a big guy. Additionally, many of the books require a ladder to get too, (again, blocking an entire aisle), or bending over in a contortionist way to reach the books at your feet These problems are a result of a good idea. This place is exactly what you want out of a used book store: smelling kind of musty, books overflowing shelves in a motionless colorful wave, etc. But the best part about this store is the employees. They're all super passionate and knowledgeable about books. No judgment either: you can ask for Thomas Pynchon or E. L. James, and the kind employee will be happy for you anyway. Unacceptable customer service from young "gentleman" and also young "lady" working there. I've shopped there since the 90's when I got my Master's at NCSU. So I made the long drive to Raleigh on a cold winter's Saturday. I hadn't been in the shop in quite a while and was looking forward to browsing for a good read. I follow CDC guidelines and respect the safety of others. When I walked into the store I was already wearing my medical grade mask. Cold air immediately steamed my glasses. The air WILL pass up and out of this grade of mask! So to be considerate and to protect others by assuring appropriate social distancing, I stayed at the door to wait for my glasses to warm up. No one was anywhere near me. I didn't drop my mask, but I did try to adjust the mask at the nose because my breath was escaping and causing my glasses to fog. WOW what a MAJOR mistake! I have NEVER been YELLED at (in a clear attempt at public shaming) like this in my life. I was speechless and mortified with shock. Immediately the young "gentleman" moves aggressively within 2 feet of me and escalates even louder with... "Do I look like I'm KIDDING to you?" I walked out without a word. SHAME on the OWNER for allowing employees to consistently (see other reviews) behave this way. Did the shoppers who observed this behavior somehow feel safer once I was gone? Did they say "Thank you for protecting us" when they checked out? Did they leave there and then go buy "take out" food (not knowing whether the workers were fastidious about their masks during food preparation)??? At least everyone can rest easy knowing no one has breathed through the gaps in their medical grade mask onto any of those used books..... Here's a thought: Require N95 masks in your business if you seriously think what I did was in any way unsafe! SHAME SHAME SHAME Please don't support a business that treats people this way. read more

I like to support recycling and what better item to recycle than a book! The prices for the books they sell are very reasonable and the condition of a lot of them are quite superb. Although the bookstore is very closely located to NCSU campus, this bookstore is definitely not just for students. They have a wide range of books of every genre, including children's books. They also purchase books, although I have not sold any to this store. They have a very small parking lot which was full around lunch time on a Saturday but there is parking just down the street towards the residential area but make sure you read the parking signs. read more

I have been shopping this place on and off for 35 years. It's the best used book store in town. You want something different then highly likely they will have it or will eventually. A major draw for Reader's Corner is apparent before even stepping into the store proper: stacks and stacks of 10 and 25c books on shelves out front. Clancy, King, a copy of Manchild in the Promised Land. Situated just a few blocks from the NC State campus, Reader's Corner knows the financial straits of its adjacent audience. Or maybe it just knows that a good book can still be found cheaply in an age of digitized copy, or likes the idea of giving its constituents thousands of pages of reading material for a mere dollar, so long as the must of mildew isn't a problem. Take it, read it, leave it on a bus or park bench in the vein of literary romantics everywhere. Past the crape myrtle that lines the sidewalks and past these colossi of literary excess is a cozy store made cozier by its fairly cramped interior. Books, CDs, audiobooks and miscellany are stacked high on all walls, and the aisle spacing would be fairly intense for someone claustrophobic. In a normal bookstore, the browsers' shuffle requires customers to time their sideways move past one another through two planes of movement so the passing ships don't knock each other aground. This is impossible at Reader's Corner. Instead, one reader or the other must make a delicate slip past while using the opposite shelf for balance, or, in the case our shier readers, do an about face, find an empty aisle to traverse, and reappear magically on the other side of the other person browsing. It's a little reminiscent of the game Frogger. Of course, when all the other aisles turn out to be crammed, our dear reader is forced to return tail-between-legs to the original aisle and whisper a plaintive "excuse me" to get by. There is nothing wrong with this up-close-and-personal approach. It gives the store a "thou shalt read" air, bombarding the landscape with myriad choices and the promise that the shelves will be lined with a slightly different selection next month. Reader's Corner also doesn't pull any 50%-off-cover shenanigans with newer hardcover used books. I picked up hardcover first editions of The Night Circus and The Tiger's Wife less than a year after they were released for a mere $5 and $6, respectively. That deal is hard to match at any other brick-and-mortars around the triangle. Have a visit; you're sure to find something (and more often, many things) that you'll love. Barring that, you can at least practice pirouetting through the aisles around nearby customers as you head back toward the door. read more

I first visited Reader's Corner way back in '93 when I first moved to Raleigh, and I've been a regular ever since; probably more so in the last few years as I've started collecting some vintage crime/SF/horror paperbacks. They seem to always have just what I'm looking for, like they're reading my mind! Weird. But great prices, knowledgeable & helpful staff, cool jazz playing on the stereo usually. Good DVD selection too. Some Saturdays you get the old cranks in there who love to pontificate loudly but I guess that's part of any used bookstore's charm. read more

While the Reader's Corner is not my favorite used bookstore in the Raleigh area, I have found that they consistently have more philosophy books and also more sociology/gender studies books on their shelves than any other used bookstore. I took my dad visiting from India to this store. He was so thrilled to find the books he was looking for. The staff was very friendly and helped my dad with locating the books. They even recognized him when he visited for the second time and gave a 40% discount. My Dad got three boxes of books. Most of the old bookstores carry fiction, non-fiction and comics. But this store is one of the very few, carrying books from different fields of study. Especially, social sciences, philosophy, politics and Marxism. If you are one looking for books in these fields this is your go to book store. You will be surprised as well as thrilled with your findings. read more

I love the Reader's Corner. I can easily wander for an hour browsing the shelves or talking to the friendly staff. Plus there are super cheap books outside- your standard torn-cornered bodice-ripping paperbacks, but a pleasantly surprising number of YA and adult fiction as well as self-help books, etc. In the far corner there's a decent selection of old textbooks sometimes; if you check it consistently, you might get lucky and find something that'll really help you if you're a student. read more

Love this fantastic book store! It is packed with used books, as well as dvd's, music, etc. They encourage you to bring your trade-ins. Prices are very reasonable. There are even donated books lined up in bookshelves on the outside of the storefront. They are yours for the taking on the honor system - 25 cents for books to the left of the door and 10 cents for books to the right with all proceeds going to support public radio. No frills, just books. And lots of hard to find books, too. read more

Reader's Corner is my favorite bookstore in the triangle. Their prices are fantastic (mostly 1/2 price on soft covers, reasonable on hardbacks). Their inventory rotates pretty quickly and they do a lot of estate sales, so you'll often see a bunch of super cheap old books still in good condition. This is such an excellent store. The manager/owner is such a nice, friendly guy - you can tell he's super passionate about what he does. Outside is the wall of $0.25 books and inside there is a table for $1 books! I always seem to find something at the $1 table - they're actually pretty good reads too!
