They suggested I walk down the block to Bank Of America which has a functional ATM. No problem. I came back ten minutes later with the cash and was told money orders are for account holders only. Huh? Perhaps the 7 people who directed me to BOA could have told me that when I asked about purchasing a money order ten minutes ago. Maybe ask if I am interested in opening an account. I ended up going to the Shaw's supermarket down the street to get the service I needed. Do we see a problem here?

It's an old fashioned bank: no ATM, one office, low employee turnover. Thus, the help gets to know you. Their financial managers are smart; they pay some of the best interest rates around consistently. It is a well-established bank; it survived the Great Depression. Do yourself a favor: Keep the money in the community and do business with them.

I have recently purchased an automobile and secured my auto loan through Hanscom. The rates and terms were extremely better than most of the banks and credit unions I checked in my area. The paper work was quick and easy from start to finish. I secured a very low rate and nice term. I was so happy with the way my auto loan was handled that I decided to visit a branch. I went to the O'Neil Building location on Causeway Street in Boston and my experience well exceeded any premonitions I may have had. As I entered the Credit Union, I was actually greeted by a woman behind the counter, engaged in a minute of small talk and she introduced me to my member services rep Jeff. He was more than professional and very well versed in explaining all my options for different types of accounts. I was interested in their checking account as it is a 100% FREE CHECKING account. He easily opened the new account in what seemed like minutes all the while chatting about mutually interesting subjects. When it seemed like we had completed the process, he excused himself and returned a couple minutes later with my new check card in his hand. Apparently this is now an instant process. I have always used large banks thinking that they would offer more for less. Well I was wrong. I left Hanscom Federal Credit Union with an even greater respect for becoming a member of a Credit Union. They have so much more to offer to Members than any bank I've ever used. I'm not sure about all Credit Unions, but Hanscom is TOP NOTCH. I refinanced my mortgage to HFCU from Bank of America. They gave me a great rate but the customer…read moreservice was fair at best. It took months to get the mortgage done because they didn't have enough people. They had to extend my rate lock several times. At any point where I had questions I would have to email multiple times to get a response and the responses would sometimes be a terse "Yes." like I was bothering them. We'll see how the account works now that is (finally) set up, but the refinance process was way more painful than at a major bank, so make sure the lower rate makes it worthwhile.
