I called ahead and the day we were arriving as we were running late, and the gal who answered the phone was very pleasant and helpful. As the campground had some flooding, she drew us out a map to help us get to our campsite, and left it in the kiosk on the side of the main building, which we were able to grab when we arrived. SO helpful! We were in a site right next to the shower houses which was super convenient. The showers are a pay-as-you-go option, so make sure you have quarters if you want a shower... one quarter gets you 5 minutes. The shower and bathroom floors were pretty cold, but as long as you have flip-flops or something, you'll be fine. We'll definitely stay here again.

We hiked along the trail that overlooked both the Wisconsin and Mississippi Rivers. It was beautiful. Lots of interesting birds, plant life and history. There are many beautiful vistas and historic/ geographical plaques and markers to help explain the area. The flood marker at the boat launch was impressive. We were only here for the day but we could see how this is a popular place for camping. We understand in summer that the mosquitoes can be fierce - lucky we were here in May. We brought our picnic lunch to the far south end of the park at the Henneger Point picnic area and had it to ourselves. A very nice state park.

The sand caves loop is an easy shaded hike perfect for hot days (with bug repellent). Driving down to the boat landing also give an interesting view from the fishing platform. The website for this campground implies a few things that aren't really true. The lake is about a…read moremile down the road. The canoes and kayaks that they have are on a trailer sitting in the back corner of the site with no one offering to bring them down. I'm guessing they were assuming that you would just throw them in the back of your pickup truck? The campground is really just a narrow strip of land. If you step off your campsite you are standing in a small road. If you step off your campsite in the other direction you are standing in a big road. I never met anyone representing the campground during the entirety of our stay. The town is within walking distance but the general store was closed the whole time as were all the other businesses. There were life jackets hanging in an open shed with a soda machine and a vending machine that probably hadn't been filled in a year. There is firewood and its quiet. Not for kids. Only if you have your own boat or have some other compelling reason to be in that town.

This is the largest contiguous forest in Iowa, which is near the bluffs of the Mississippi River. It is also fairly isolated - spotty phone service, and buy all supplies before you arrive. The campgrounds are loops with little shade overall, but the nearby bluffs, trails, and fishing are what bring people. Toilets are pit toilets that were cleaned daily when we camped in the middle of the week, but they are pit toilets. No showers, sinks, or electricity. You fill out a form and stuff that and $8 into a little slot on a board with the site #'s posted above the slot This place is gorgeous. The trails are on bluffs high above the campground and the scenery is spectacular. You would never guess this is Iowa. It is also near the Effigy Mounds National Monument, a prehistoric burial site built by Native Americans over 1000 years ago. This is a place to camp and visit if you want to see some of the less-visited State Forests and Parks in the midwest.

We discovered Iowa's campgrounds were open and stumbled upon this beautiful campground only three hours from the city right along the upper Iowa river. Luckily it was early in the season because they said they fill up fast during summer months. Heads up, there is no cell phone service here but some free wifi if needed. They booked us a tent site right on the rivers edge! The sites were all marked well and were well shaded with trees. Each site had a picnic table and fire ring and gave you enough space between sites. The office has some food for sale and other needed things like firewood. There is also a man made swimming hole/small lake for families to enjoy because the river is hard to swim in sometimes. They have kayak and canoe rentals to enjoy on the river. I highly recommend doing this! The scenery here is beautiful! Way better then we expected. They can shuttle you to either a four hour run or six hour run down the river. We did the six hour run which did get quite long. The water was a little high but it was still very safe for a beginner. I also heard that fishing is great here when the water is clear. The owners are so nice and accommodating. Prices are very reasonable and you and the family will have such a great time here!

Tee boxes were in bad shape but the greens were very nice. Back nine was hillier and more challenging with narrower fairways and more water challenges. Staff checking us in was friendly and helpful. The area is beautiful. The bike trail is near so we heard a few riders zooming past. We played fast. Our first 18 holes took about 3 hours. We bopped over to hole two after finishing 18 and played 6 more of the front nine until we caught up to a foursome. Beautiful day on the course.

It has 11 miles of trails to check out. We did bridal veil falls trail and then Point Ann trail from the McGregor parking area. Other nearby attractions like effigy mounds national monument and local small town businesses. If you are from Iowa, don't forget to cross the river and grab some spotted cow beer from the town of prairie du chien in Wisconsin! They have a campground as well and river activities. Yellow river state park isn't far and is one of our favorites. Highly recommend for a vacation spot either for a day trip or multiple days to check out the surrounding attractions.

Spacious sites, concrete roads, easier access to all sites. Very well maintained. Mid-April and water was not accessible yet. We brought our own so no problem if you plan accordingly.
