We found this little gem of a theatre this week while visiting Key West. Not our first time in KW so we explore new places. What a terrific find. We saw the opening of Scrooge McBeth & enjoyed a night of laugh therapy. Great space, terrific cast & costumes & a wonderful production of a fabulously strange story! LYAO enjoyment. We were a group of six & were all equally happy to have seen the show & meet some of the cast & audience. Very warm & friendly people. We look forward to seeing another performance the next time we get to KW. read more

Very small theater in a historic building. Saw "Quarantine for Two", a wickedly funny play about a middle-aged warring couple cooped up together during COVID. We could all relate to lines about disinfecting grocery bags, "mask-debators", toilet paper shortages and the like. Sometimes it's good to laugh at tragedy. Details: Reserve seats on the theater's website and pick up tickets at the box office up to an hour before curtain time. Very tight leg room and narrow seating with protruding cupholders made us happy it was a short play! As of mid-March the Red Barn was still asking for vaccine cards and masks despite the fact that Florida doesn't require them. read more

It was a very small venue so there was really no bad seats. We saw "Lets get Lost" The actors were wonderful however this is something that would be more appreciated by an older crowd. Excellent local theater! Bar and patio with cute twinkly lights to hang out before show. Right off of Duval so super convenient but feels very quiet and intimate. Great actors and super friendly ushers. read more

My first visit and it was ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS! I saw the play DANCE LESSON...a two person play starring the incredibly talented Dave Bootle and a female costar who was equally superb! Laughed hard, and was also emotionally challenged by the underlying content... You will not be disappointed! read more

I have attended many plays at the Red Barn theater over the past 35 years. I absolutely love the coziness of this historic gem, tucked into a quiet little pocket right off of Duval Street. They offer several plays each season. The acting is usually quite good and the backdrops and props are always very well imagined. My favorite thing about it is how Key Westy it is - small, casual and friendly. read more

I have been going to Key West in February for over 25 years and I always include a visit to the Red Barn Theater. This is a small local theatre filled with talented actors who put on many different genre's of plays. I've never been disappointed and I live in NY and visit Broadway frequently! read more

This well done 3 act play depicts a very dark side of getting older and having regrets. The acting was good, but the subject and the substance of the play was very dark and depressing. Wish I would have left at intermission. I kept hoping that the of the last act of the play would redeem the first half. Sadly, it did not. read more

History

Established in 1980.

The Red Barn Theatre was founded in 1980 by a group of actors and directors who felt that a professional theater could thrive in Key West. They found the current site not too long after, and have steadily improved the theater's facility and infrastructure ever since. The 88 seat theater is one of the most intimate spaces you'll find for Broadway-quality theatrical productions.

Meet the Manager: Mimi M.

Mimi was one of the founders of the Red Barn, and as a seasoned actress has appeared in dozens of productions there. She also serves as the Managing Director of the Red Barn Actor's Studio, the 501c.3. non-profit that operates the theater.

They had a couple of other options we would've enjoyed seeing another day. I also think that the popcorn and the drinks were tasty and everything was very cost effective. Like the ones with: stadium seating, the hottest new action movies, long lines for popcorn, overpriced tickets, electric chairs with lots of space, huge parking lot with only room in the back, lots of high schoolers hanging around WELL THIS IS NOT THAT PLACE This is more like a movie theatre you expect back in the 50's It'a a non-profit with lots of volunteers and the best staff ever. They treat everyone lovingly and talk about movies with passion. The snack counter is small but so is the whole place so there is rarely a line and even when that does happen it's really short. They do get some new releases but this is not what you should come for; ask what they recommend; special movies with lower budgets and more cinematic talent is their thing here.

I waited in line until way past my movie's start time but fortunately I only missed the first 15 minutes of trailers for other movies. (Seriously! Why are there so many trailers and ads before the movie I've paid to see comes on?) The theatre is icy cold so it's a welcome relief from Key West's heat and humidity in August. But the air carries that faint mildewy aroma that closed up buildings in the tropics can get. Seats were comfy and staggered so you don't have to look at the back of anyone's head, so that's nice. But they don't recline like some more modern theatres' seats do. Parking is hit-or-miss. The theatre shares a lot with Publix (and several other stores) and it must have been free-food day because we ended up having to park a long long way from the theatre.
