This is a cool theater, and you can tell that the owners really take a lot of pride in this gem. The lobby has a nice Art Deco feel to it, which really enhances the whole moviegoing experience. Of course, the prices of both movie tickets and snacks are very reasonable, in fact, an afternoon spent at the Tropic will be a nice break from some of Key West's more hectic and party driven pursuits. However, what really sets this theater apart is the statue of Marilyn Monroe rating out front of the theater. It is recreation of the iconic dress scene from the movie "The Seven Year Itch". Take the time to stand next to Marilynn to take on of the more memorable photos you will ever take in Key West. read more

Adore this little cinema and make a point to go whenever in town. We're spoiled with our AMC A-List where we see a ton of movies for $20/month.....but rarely do we get to see art house movies all in one place. Charming and well worth what you pay to support independent films. I appreciate that most people are wearing masks because the theatres are tiny. read more

Great Art Deco Non Profit Cinema serving the community of Key West. Always the best affordable movies, but become a member and save $6 per movie. They have the friendliest staff of volunteers along with the freshest popcorn! Oh don't forget a glass of wine (or bottle), Beer or seltzer to enjoy while watching the movie. read more

This is a really cool indie theater. Much better than going to AMC or Shmegle Theater or whatever the mainstream movie theater in The trash part of town is called. I go here. I go here now. read more

A true throw-back to yesteryear... picture those retro movie theaters you'd only see in actual "movies" but this is it... this is the real deal... Even if it really isn't old at all. What exactly makes this place so special? First of all, don't come expecting super loud and chest pounding sounds from a super modern sound system or films with unbelievable budgets over 100 million dollars. They do have current films but the popular choices here are independent and lower budget films as well as foreign hit films. Thinking about it, you'd think it would be abandoned considering they don't offer stadium seating or a huge movie screen. For one, Key West does not have a stadium seating theatre and even if it did, this place would still thrive. It's reminds every older visitor of their youth and for those younger guests it provides a feel for what the "olden days" offered. Today's typical theatre you pay thru a thick glass with a crackling speaker (so impersonal) and you sit in a room with literally hundreds of seats. The concession stand employees are always "hurry hurry who's next hurry hurry" mentality; Not here at the Tropic. Ticket counter is just that, a counter with a person that says "enjoy the show" and you know they didn't say it because it's there job, they said it because they care and it means a lot to the staff that you do enjoy; part of their job is to promote theatre. You see, this theatre works as a charity and that ticket seller is a volunteer and those guys selling the popcorn cracking jokes and enjoying themselves are also volunteers. They all just love theatre. Part of the charm obviously goes beyond neon lights and nostalgic decor; it has to do with the old school feel that the visitors has endured here for years. read more

Highly recommend this theatre experience. Each theater seats about 30 people and has a screen size the fit the size of the room. We had a great time here and will definitely return. The snacks are reasonably priced, and they serve wine and beer. The staff is friendly and willing to help with your needs. read more

This is hands down on the top of the locals list for a rainy day matinee or cozy date night dinner and a movie plan. Her tastefully restored starlit grandeur of decades gone passed are easy to spot, donning a colorful marque and life size Marilyn Monroe statue out front. If I could wrap my arms around The Tropic I would give it a big hug. The heart of this quaint little gem are the volunteers who graciously run this historic theatre with warmth and hospitality. You feel welcomed as soon as you step foot into the lobby. There is a concession stand that offers the usual array of theatre nosh along with a select group of wines (in a plastic glass) for you to enjoy during the flick. My personal favorite is the popcorn bar. Order yourself a popcorn and partake in the many different types of popcorn flavorings with shaker bags set up against a wall. Such a wonderful and well thought out touch. The viewing rooms are very small, some so much that it has the feeling of an oversized personal home theatre rather than the grandiose megga movie complex. The seats are comfy and the entire place impeccably maintained. There is a downloadable phone app to check movies on the go if you plan on staying in town for a while. This is NOT a regular movie theater like the one up on Roosevelt or the one back home. This is special! You will not find Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3 HERE! A group of passionate citizens saved this old theater, and now, as a non-profit, it is more than just a theater. I've seen documentaries not shown in other cities. I've attended "meet the Producer" movie premieres. I've had a nice glass of wine while enjoying a show. I've hung out in the very cool lobby reading "Variety" magazine. Overall, it's a gem! They stream opera. Have wine events. It's a vibrant part of the community in Key West! Tired of the drunken-ness on Duval Street? This is your saving grace. read more

The wife and I wanted to kill an afternoon in KW, and decided to go check out the new Clooney movie (tough to figure out which one of us drove THAT decision, huh). Tropic Cinema was playing it, so off we went. From the outside, this looks like any standard small town movie theater. But...the second you walk in the door, this place just starts shining. TOTALLY retro, TOTALLY awesome. Great people working it, great snack stand with non-gouge pricing (who woulda thunk!), and beer! Yes, that's right...BEER! There are four screens - three are in small theaters (around 40-50 each), and one larger one (for digital). The screening rooms are clean (again, who woulda thunk!), the seating is comfortable, and clean, and....get this...ONE....that's right....ONE preview before the flick starts! (obviously, on that one, no one woulda thunk). This place rocks....coolest theater I've been in...period! read more

This is the coolest theater ever. I'm so glad we decided to see Star Wars one night during our vacation. This place was a short walk from our hotel, and right off Duval. Since it was a Star Wars night, they had a very organized process going on for the lines (starting outside) for each showing. There were volunteers working, and putting wrist bands on for each person holding a ticket. We got in the wrong line at first, and then very nicely informed which line we needed to be in. It was just super. Once we got into the building we saw how nice the interior is, and how much care the owners took in creating a great movie-going experience. We got seated inside the theater, then I went out to get snacks. Again, the line was very easy to follow, and luckily very short. I got popcorn and a soda, and...this is the best part...they use REAL BUTTER. Yeah, unheard of these days. They also have a variety of flavored salt to add once you walk away from the cashier. The concession people were so nice. They were older adults, not bored kids. When I went a second time, to get more butter on our popcorn, I also grabbed an ice cream bar. There was a selection of beer and wine available as well. The concession prices were reasonable. This is definitely worth a trip if you want a a movie night. read more

This theatre was definitely fun to visit! The theater was very small and intimate and the theme is very old Hollywood and it's beautiful. Staff was friendly and the restrooms were clean. :-) The only thing...with the theatre being so intimate, if there are a lot of people...it can start to feel too small. I enjoyed my experience, I do wish they had a parking lot or something. There is one close by, but the attendent said it was 15.00 which is crazy. I may attend again because it was fun, but I just really don't like the parking situation. It's worth one visit though! read more

The Tropic is one of the best things Key West has going for it. Friendly staff, comfortable seats, and 3 of the 4 theaters are small, almost intimate venues, as opposed to the large, hundred+ seat theaters in most cinemas. Foreign flicks and indie films outnumber common studio productions, which is a good thing. That's not to say you can't see the latest Marvel blockbuster; you'll just have to wait until a few weeks after the movie's initial release. If you live anywhere near here, get a membership - it quickly pays for itself, especially with 3D films. Another plus - you can get a beer or a glass (or bottle) of wine at the concession counter :) read more

If I lived in Key West, I would visit this nostalgic movie theater every week! It is located in the heart of Old Town and shows independent releases. I love that they have matinee prices for the early screenings, and you can get wine with your popcorn! read more

I love the Tropic. It's a wonderful, intimate movie theater. Great staff (many are volunteers). Clean, comfortable and great film selection.

This theater is ok but I wish they played a better variety of movies. It's always the same crappy films and never what's most popular at the box office. Especially since it's been the only functioning theater on this tiny island you would think they would want to cater to all people and not just a certain viewer.... "Unplanned" would've been a good movie to see here but will likely never be showing in such a liberal theater and town!! read more

We went to a 6:15 show and then headed out for a nice dinner. This theater is terrific - very clean and well appointed. Several small screens with nicely upholstered seats and a floor so clean you could eat off it. This theater is so well maintained and cared for, I felt grateful they let me come in - Tropic Cinema made me feel like I was attending a special event! Awesome theater! Intimate atmosphere, very high end. pretty expensive, but I'm from Chicago, so no big deal. It reminds me of the Renascence Theatre in Highland Park, IL. Phenomenal! Love, LOVE this tiny cinema! We were lucky enough to check out Moonrise Kingdom at this quaint little place. It's very charming - nothing particularly special about it, but the historicalness (not a word, but it is in today's review!) of it makes it attractive. The screening rooms are teeny, tiny so you MUST get there early to grab a seat. If not, be prepared to have to split up from your party. There's a concession stand with the usual goodies, and the staff is lovely. I'll definitely visit again if I'm ever in Key West! PLUS, they serve beer - score! read more

Great place for a rainy afternoon in Key West. We ordered our tickets online however there was surprisingly plenty of seating. The snack bar had lots of variety unfortunately the popcorn was fair, not warm and lacked flavor also on an extra large soda there is no refills as it is in most movie theaters. Whoever said they play crappy films makes me laugh. Maybe you need to stay at a suburban mall multiplex. The tropic has a fantastic selection of thoughtful, brilliant indie and studio films alike. Compelling documentaries! The film festival is also worth catching. It's a fantastic gem on the island. If you like films beyond formulaic tent poles, this theater will deliver a great experience. 5 stars! read more

Incredible experience... The movie we saw was not the best but the cinema was just cool. We had a glass of wine, a great beer (La Fin Du Monde), and some hummus (with chips) during the movie which made it great. Yes, do not expect a 3D huge IMAX screen or even any large regular theater screens.. However, the theater makes up for size in quality and ambiance. Get ready to be brought back to a time when movies really made the imagination go wild... We really enjoyed the experience.... read more
