I was really impressed with this gaming store. First off it's big so that have a kid of room to play, and there is a cafe at the end of the site that has snacks foods and drinks. Pro Tip: if you order any food or drink, you can rent out any game they have on the rental shelfs for free. The have a variety of two player games, party games, strategy games, card canes, etc to rent. All the way from easy games for kids to challenging games for more demanding games. The staff at the rental counter and the cafe were the friendliest and gave excellent recommendations in games. The games they have for sale cover many popular choices but also lesser known games. They also sell gaming accessories such as D100 dice!!! Oh my! The cafe even has a 3D printed dice tower if you want to choose the fate of your food order. lol! There is limited alcohol here and the food is mostly snacks, but they do have sliders and chicken tenders, pop, liquid death, a couple of canned alcoholic drinks. For a whopping $12 I spent on food, I got to try 4 games, and.....it was karaoke night and we sang songs with random strangers in the specially reservable room they had. You could select the songs on the machine or through an app. They could use a little more variety in the song list that have but a lot of the popular suns are there. I can't wait to go back and try some more games. Parking was street parking and a little challenging but there are side streets too with street parking. The store itself had super modern and clean look, games well displayed, and nice and air conditioned on a warm day. Even the bathrooms have some hygiene products and are unisex! Oh yeah did I mention that are open late. 1am on a Friday night. I would seriously recommend this place to anyone! read more

Red Castle Games is such a lovely space. Brightly lit, inviting, & warm. Walls lined with board games, a few play areas, and a nice little coffee shop tucked away behind it all. I'm part of a group who has been playing Blood on the Clocktower once a month at this store for the last few months and Red Castle has been the perfect venue for us to host our games. My car broke down which leaves me stranded in my apartment, he was kind and courteous enough to waive the late fee that would have been associated with my rentals. I think 3 out of 5 stars is perfect for this store it could be better if a few things changed. I like this store a lot they have a lot of options of things to choice from. The prices are iffy, sometimes they are competitive others they are just way over prices. If that changed and then having more magic singles would be great. Every time I tried to find a single I needed they would never have it. I honestly can't remember the last single I bought here, and I look for several singles a week. I wouldn't recommend this shop. The lights are too bright, for one, and they are money hungry. Not only are their prices higher than most other local game stores, but they wouldn't even consider giving us store credit for a pre-release kit that was stolen from us at their last event. So here I am, 49 years old and looking to learn how to play Magic:The Gathering for the first time. The makers, Wizards of The Coast (owned by Hasbro), have a very comprehensive website with terabytes of information at my fingertips but not much in the way of HOW TO PLAY WHEN YOU'RE NEW. They helpfully direct you to their training site called Arena )which I've heard has wonderful tutorials). However, since I've had enough of pandemic isolation, I wanted an in-person experience. I used the WOTC site's store locator and Red Castle Games popped right up. I hot-footed it down from Vancouver; got princess parking (in front of the doors); donned a mask and was greeted by some of the nicest folks ever. Katie guided me through the entire process and explained everything in great detail. She answered my (ludicrously) long list of detailed questions (I am a total Capricorn...) and related her own anecdotal experiences about the game to me. She then introduced me to Moe, the store manager who contributed to our twenty five minute instant deep dive into MTG (see? I'm already using the vernacular). The two of them were so helpful and sweet that I was blown away. Go see them! If the owners are reading this - give them both big raises! By the way, the store is gorgeous. It's unlike any game store you've ever been to. I swear all that was missing was a Starbucks kiosk - don't judge, it's pumpkin spice season! Anyway, I have my starter deck and a couple of dice. Apparently, when you trade in cards, the card credit is valid only on the day of the trade. Afterwards, it turns into regular store credit (which is considerably less - about half). THIS WAS NOT COMMUNICATED TO ME. I traded approximately $140 worth of cards hoping to sit on credit for cards that hadn't come in yet. Turned out my $75+ of leftover singles credit turned into about $40 store credit overnight. Never thought I'd regret supporting a brick and mortar lgs, but here we are. I still have about $4 dollars in credit there - they can keep it, since they seem to be struggling so much for income. read more

First off this isn't about location or the store itself. Looks great and appears to carry lots of product. I get the pandemic changes things. I accept that business is different now. What I don't understand is how people are eating in restaurants, protesting and so on but I can't walk through a game shop. Happened to be in Portland and wanted to shop. Arrive and am told I can't browse because they want all the employees to get vaccinated first. With everything we know it's safe to let two or three people walk through the store. I am soooo stoked to have a game shop in my neighborhood!!! I went in there today looking for the card game Dominion--Seaside, which they had. That's a good sign, I thought. Come to find out they have a whole wall of all my favorite games. You name it, they've most likely got it. Settlers of Catan and the expansions, Pandemic, PowerGrid, Carcassonne, Puerto Rico, and the list goes on. (Read: Board Game Geek Top 100 offerings) By the way, if you have no idea what I'm talking about then you have not yet been introduced to the beautiful world of German-style board games. These are complicated, interesting, strategy-bent games with style and class. Definitely not your typical Yahtzee experience. The store, of course, also sells RPGs (role playing games) that include Magic, Zombies, etc. And they host a bunch of game nights for RPGs as well. They would like to expand and offer game nights for the board gamers as well but they need community interest first. read more

Camp Urborg is an alternative camping experience started by fans of Magic the Gathering, which now embraces collectible card games of all stripes. A world-class friendly neighborhood game shop. I live in Austin, which is filled with a plethora of great game stores, but was visiting relatives in Portland when I came across Red Castle. As a hard core game geek, I was very impressed the moment I walked through the doors. The selection of games there could satisfy all levels of players, from novice to grognard. They have very thoughtfully set up separate display areas for cooperative games, two-player games, adult-themed games, and other special interests. And the back half of the store is a dedicated game play area with a regular schedule of board games, card games, and miniature events. Finally, I was most impressed with the staff - they know their stuff, but are also extremely friendly and do not talk down to novice customers. As a lifelong gamer, if I had to leave Austin, I could gladly move to Portland knowing there are great game shops like Red Castle. read more

This shop is pretty decent in my book, room for improvement but definitely worth your time! My roommate and I have been on a Keyforge bender and came to check out the store for an event. Sadly the event, due to unforeseen technical difficulties didn't end up firing. This was disheartening as we had planned out the night to come compete in the event. We ended up staying for a while and I was fairly sour about the circumstance. HOWEVER, that being said one employee MATT really went above and beyond he made an extremely kind gesture towards me and roommate and in general was super positive and polite that really saved the whole experience for me personally. He is the kind of employee that stores should strive to keep around because of his excellent demeanor and great customer service skills! The store is a decent size, and a good selection, the snacks selection is above par for most LGS's. It's a fairly laid back atmosphere and a good staff. Also they actually have samples of Dragonshields which I wish more shops had! Overall store feel I would say is B+ to A-. read more

I used to adore Red Castle Games an incredibly large amount. Now I don't adore them as much, the glamour wore off eventually. They don't feel like they care the way they used to. Some of the employees are lack luster about customers that aren't all about Magic: the Gathering, and after they moved they never finished either of the gaming rooms in ways that would be really nice. Some of the employees, if talking to the right ones, are incredibly nice and really helpful. They have a really large gaming area that has a really well stocked game library. Their private gaming rooms are useful, albeit lacking floors or decent ventilation, because they add much needed privacy and quiet during certain types of gaming sessions. The Armory isn't the better of the rooms, but it's still useful as it is. Their actual selection of merchandise isn't bad, just a little less extensive than some other stores. Their late hours are really convenient and if they were open earlier they could handle just about all your needs. But it's incredibly well balanced between miniatures, board games, role-playing, etc. Their program for accounts and incentives, as well as some of the deals they have are all really great. Even if I don't feel as great about the store as I used to, I still adore the place either way and recommend it to people all the time. It's a great game store overall. read more

The main reason why I'm forking over 5 stars is because, more than once, Red Castle has saved the day by having a game available that other game stores have out of stock. Maybe Red Castle is slightly under the radar for board games but, so far, it has worked out in my favor! Another contributing factor for the high rating are the late hours of operations. Good for that last minute late night game purchase. I've also got to give props to the incentive program. While $20 off after $500 in purchase isn't an amazing deal...chances are, I will spend $500 there and it is great to know that they want to give something back. While the shop seems kind of Magic-centric they still have a solid selection of board games (my weakness). The organization is easy to navigate and the games are displayed clearly so they are easy to browse. Most recently when I went in, there was some Magic event going on. The line was out the door from people entering a tournament and others buying cards and packs. At this time I realized how unfortunate it was that they only had one register. While it look less then 5 minutes to pick a game to purchase it took well over 15 minutes to actually pay for the game. And they asked those signing up for the tournament to move to the front of the line. I know that they wanted to get the tournament going...but it still kind of felt like a slap in the face. They have rooms for game play and a decent variety of snacks to buy. I haven't spent any time playing games here but I may some time in the future. read more

I come here enough to have just passed my first $500, and the staff is starting to know my name. I try go there once a week to get my gaming-fix in, but I frequent other stores as well. What I love about them, is that they're open late, are the closest game store to where I live, and have great gaming tables. They also have good gaming ambiance. I like how they make the occasion for family time with spouses and children in order to bring more people into tabletop/card/roleplaying/board gaming, while at the same time leaving it as a place where you can have fun as an adult with other like-minded adults. I think the staff is friendly and affable, even if none of them seem to be into my game of preference - but that should not be a prerequisite. They're able to outsource that role to another regular customer to be the community leader for the players of my game (X-Wing Miniatures and soon Star Wars: Armada). Some room for improvement might be greater outdoor lighting or a security camera on the bicycle corrals, because bicycles do get stolen there (incl. mine - admittedly, I had a cheap lock on it). Also, their blog-style website (http://redcastlegames.com/) seems only modestly useful. While I am sure the articles are interesting, they don't seem to have the information one would generally look for on a gaming store's website. Given that their Facebook page is more useful in that regard, perhaps the general website should have a link to their Facebook page. But, I am definitely a fan of this place, and I greatly look forward to coming there as often as my schedule permits. read more
